Dear Readers

Welcome to our Spring edition...

Snow in March...well that’s not something we see every year. Here at NG Mags we are sick to death of the cold weather. Lets hope we have a great summer to compensate.

Easter is very early this year so we have already started stuffing our faces full of chocolate. Our recipe page features a very gooey chocolate muffin if, like us, you are a chocoholic. And best still they are so easy to make! Enjoy.

As always please keep in touch with any community news. We love to hear from you.Happy Reading Ali, Cat, Sarah & Helen

Henry and Friends Local author Sandy Williamson has recently retired after working in insurance for over thirty years. Sandy only took up writing two years ago, which she enjoys immensely.

Henry and Friends is a children’s book about a cockerel living on a working farm with lots of other animals who he calls his friends. A lovely couple live and run the farm, they have three small children. The couple have recently left busy jobs in the city to ‘enjoy’ the

countryside.

Sandy says; “I feel it is important for children to read books, not enough time is spent on physical activities like football, swimming and simply playing.”

“The story of Henry and Friends gives children an insight into what life is like on a working farm. Henry is designed to be educational, informative and at the same time amusing.”

Sandy’s book is available from Amazon for £3.99.

Breathe Easy Nottingham West have been successful in getting a grant from The Broxtowe Lifestyle fund. It will be now possible to produce a comprehensive information pack for patients with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is an umbrella term for lots of different lung problems e.g. emphysema, chronic bronchitis).

The pack includes lots of British Lung foundation information and their DVD on every aspect of COPD, self-management and exercise. It is part of a project entitled ‘The benefits of information and exercise'. We hope to show that giving people the right information at the right time in the right format can help patients understand how to manage their COPD and how exercise can play a part in helping them maintain a good quality of life.

The pack will be given out by nurses at

practices across the area to patients who are newly diagnosed or at follow up checks. Included is an offer of a free exercise lesson and exercise manual.

The funding will also help pay for a new respiratory exercise class which has started at Eastwood’s Plumptre Hall every Tuesday at 11-12. The class is being taken by Lynn Davey who already runs our successful respiratory exercise class for the Nottingham West Breathe Easy group every Thursday at Plumptre at the same time. Lynn says ’the class has grown to such numbers, and as a result of the grant we can now add a second class. It is open to all respiratory and cardiac patients, there are seated or standing options, even those requiring oxygen can exercise and all the exercises will be tailored to the individual with 3 different levels depending on severity of their problem’.

COMMUNITY

Community Champion Keith LongdonSpeeches and grand gestures are all very well: but as Notts. County Councillor,

Keith Longdon knows, you have to

follow up with good, solid action. And that means putting the

community fi rst. Pounding the streets, day in

and day out, taking note of the myriad of problems and concerns raised by anxious, upset and harassed parishioners. The elderly and disabled are always a big priority for him. Since being elected to Eastwood Town Council in 2007 and later to Broxtowe Borough Council, he has earned the respect and gratitude of local residents in the process.

A former Mayor of Eastwood, Keith has raised thousands of pounds for charities: The Lung-Function-Department of the City

Hospital and Eastwood Age Concern to name just two; where his wife of over 40 years: Annette, was manageress, until her recent retirement. He’s been a Governor of Eastwood Comprehensive for the past fi ve years and is Chairman of Eastwood Neighbourhood Watch. Youngsters feature highly on Councillor Longdon’s busy agenda, he values his home life, children and grandchildren, and is on the steering committee of the new youth centre, visiting those premises nightly, to mentor teenagers and to try and keep them on the straight and narrow. Born and raised in Nottinghamshire, he’d been a keen cricketer until a broken leg ended his participation. He now restricts himself to being a season-ticket-holder for Nottingham Forest.41 years of Keith’s working life was spent at Aristoc Hosiery, working his way up through management and winning awards along the way, before retiring to take up active civic life.

A new campaign was launched in January to recruit an army of local carers to support adults who need help to live independently.

Shared Lives, which is being run by the County Council, aims to recruit carers from across the county to help support people with physical or learning disabilities, older people or mental health needs. All carers will receive training and ongoing support and will be paid depending on the needs of the person or people they care for.

Shared Lives is looking for carers who can provide a range of support:

• Long term accommodation and support: people who have room in their home and are willing to have someone to live as part of their family for some time. This may be months or years.

• Short breaks: people who can offer a short break for someone while the people who normally support them are having a holiday or have to be away.

• Regular short-term support: people who can offer support in the day to promote independence and help people become part of their community.

Councillor Kevin Rostance, Chair of the Adult Social Care and Health Committee, said: “We are looking for caring people who have some time and space in their lives to help an adult. You may be a retired person who has room in your home; a parent who has spare time in the day or someone who works in the week, but has evenings or weekends free.

“Shared Lives is a vital scheme which will help older or disabled people to experience ordinary life with real relationships. Please get in touch if you think you can help.”

Anyone who is interested in becoming a Shared Lives carer can visit www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/sharedlives, email: [email protected] or phone 0300 500 80 80.

Towards the end of last year, there seemed little hope that a dog rescued by Nottinghamshire animal charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit (AARU), would find a new home for 2013. This volunteer-led local charity is not one to give up easily though … and success has followed with the dog being given a new forever home!

‘Rocky’ - a Golden Retriever-cross dog had a ‘rocky’ time indeed during 2012, having been neglected and left as a stray. After being rescued and cared for by fosterers at AARU, this fine eight year old is now enjoying life in his new permanent home.

To see Rocky in action for yourself watch his video on the YouTube website under ‘AARU Rocky’. The charity, however, currently has in its care plenty more affectionate cats and dogs who would equally love a permanent home. Please do pay them a virtual visit at www.aaru.org.uk or email [email protected] for details. All homes are checked prior to adoption.

Animal Accident Rescue Unit is entirely run by volunteers spanning drivers, telephonists, fundraisers and fosterers – and more are always needed and welcome! Why not do something to help vulnerable animals like Rocky this year? Everyone has something to offer: whether it is office skills, fundraising, driving or offering a temporary or permanent animal home – all help needy local animals to safety and security. To discover how you can help – including by donating crucial funds to continue this essential work, email [email protected] or by call 0115-931 4274. All other calls to the charity must be made using its Lifeline telephone number 0115-932 1555.

I have just lost a friend. Ken Marsland died at the end of February. He was born in Jubilee Street, Kimberley, and lived for many years in Giltbrook. Ken was well known as a campaigner, fund-raiser and local historian. He was a member of the Royal British Legion, had served a stint as Chair of Greasley Parish Council and was created a Freeman of the Borough of Broxtowe for his services to the community.

I met Ken shortly after I moved to Kimberley 26 years ago. We became firm friends and have had some memorable times together. For about ten years we organised a series of coach trips to places of interest. These started as part of the Historical Society but eventually took on a life of their own as ‘M & M Tours’.

We visited working museums where we watched people making leather goods, porcelain, chocolate, nails, bathtubs. We went down a coal mine, into army barracks, listened to a mighty Wurlitzer and walked on stilts. You may be one of the people who travelled with us. We always had a full bus and our little not-for-profit venture donated more than £1,500 to charity.

Ken and I enjoyed some particularly good days out together to celebrate Ken’s birthday. For his 80th we went to Scotland for the day. We had breakfast at East Midlands airport and boarded the 9am flight to Glasgow, with all the businessmen. We took a conducted tour of Glasgow City Hall and afterwards caught the train to Edinburgh for lunch – haggis and neeps, of course – followed by an open-top bus tour. The 5pm flight from Edinburgh airport got us back to Giltbrook in time for tea.

When Ken turned 85 we went to the National Memorial Arboretum for the day. Ken had his photo taken by the REME and Fire Service memorials as he had proudly served in both.

Because there was a lot of walking involved, Ken was offered the hire of a mobility scooter for the day. He agreed, as it would be a new experience to try. He was given a quick lesson

and in no time was zooming round the car park. I spent the day racing after him on foot as he sped about the site, having the time of his life on his new toy. As soon as he got home he was on the internet finding out where he could get hold of one for himself. I do believe, if there had been a 007 model that sprouted wings

and had flames coming out the back, he would have had one of those.

Two years ago Ken published his life story “Those Were The Days, My Friend”. The book successfully catches Ken’s energy, his enthusiasm and zest for life. He was interested in everything, and knowledgeable on many subjects. He loved his volunteer job as a signalman on the preserved steam railway at Butterley. Getting his book into print was a huge achievement and I was very proud to be able to help him realise this ambition.

Ken was a good friend to me. He was always ready to listen to my ideas, come round with his

tool box, drive me anywhere, look after my dog, bake me a cake. It has been a pleasure and a privilege to have him as a friend and I shall miss him very much.

A Fond Farewell by Gloria Morgan

Instruction: How to Record, Playback and MAKE it all Work!

Over 30 Years Experience, Covering East MidlandsExpert, Professional Service Guaranteed!

Smart TV Connection

4G and your TVSo what is 4G? Well 4G is a new mobile phone system coming soon to the East Midlands, offering a stronger signal with better services than the current 3G. It may however present a problem for your current digital TV service. With the far stronger signal, there is a possibility that if you are close enough to one of the transmitter masts, the signal will interfere with, or possible overwhelm your existing TV signal! The solution will be to fit special filters on the aerial and on each TV and recording device. The Government has promised some financial help with this, but just how far it will go is not certain. This does not affect satellite services i.e. Sky or Freesat, nor Virgin cable which consumers may have to turn to for their TV service, if the filters prove unsuccessful. If you would like to have more information on this, please feel free to call me Alan, TVconfused on 07973 375853

From Sergeant Andy Browning...We are building on a successful start to the year by continuing to reduce antisocial behaviour in the NG16 area. Officers are working proactively with different agencies to tackle the issue.

Warnings have been given to tenants, where it is deemed necessary, and along with Broxtowe Borough Council we are using antisocial behaviour closure legislation. This legislation gives us the power to shut down a house for three months if it can be shown that the property is at the centre of antisocial behaviour in the area.

This means the house cannot be accessed throughout that time and it is likely that both private and council tenants would lose the tenancy. We are currently looking to provide evidence about a number of houses.

If we have enough proof that tenants are upsetting their neighbours with antisocial behaviour we will take action.

As well as targeting tenancies we can also implement Antisocial Behaviour Orders (ASBOs) on prolific offenders - we are committed to making Eastwood a better place to live.

Another area of criminal activity we have been focusing on in recent months is burglary.

We organised a programme of proactive policing in Kimberley, Watnall and Nuthall, which involved both uniformed and plain clothed officers. They patrolled on foot throughout the night and two people were arrested for going equipped to steal.

All of this action has led to a reduction in the crime rate in the area and we will keep working hard to ensure this continues to be the case.

Finally, officers have lots of information coming in relating to drug use and dealing and we will be acting on it over the next few weeks. If you are involved, you can expect a knock on your door.

Most recently we arrested two suspected drug dealers in the Eastwood area, both of whom have been remanded into custody.

The work will not stop there, we are continuing to look at drug dealing and drug use and we will be making further arrests and executing warrants in the future.

If you have any information about those committing crime, please tell us. Call 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A not-for-profit catering venture offering employment and training to adults with learning difficulties has opened in Eastwood’s D.H. Lawrence Heritage Centre. Kimberley Paralympian, Simon Wilson and the Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Iris White opened the new-look D.H. Lawrence Bistro in February (pictured right).

The D.H. Lawrence Bistro will provide supported employment and training to adults with learning difficulties from across Nottinghamshire who are aged 25 or over. The trainees will be involved in all aspects of the business, from hospitality and food preparation to cooking.

“The big difference between the D.H. Lawrence Bistro and other local cafes is that we offer training through work experience to people with learning difficulties,” said Bistro

manager Patricia Ironside. Patricia also runs Strawberry Fayre on a part-time basis, a similar not-for-profit venture at King’s Mill Reservoir in Sutton in Ashfield.

Broxtowe Borough Council will allow the D.H. Lawrence Bistro to enjoy its first year at the Heritage Centre rent free, as well as offering a start-up grant to help ensure the long-term success of this exciting and innovative venture.

The Bistro will be open to visitors to the attraction every week, Tuesday to

Sunday from 10am daily. Larger groups and coaches are also welcome by prior arrangement.

For more information about the D.H. Lawrence Bistro and to discuss catering for weddings, birthdays and other functions, please contact Patricia Ironside on 01773 717 353 or email: [email protected]

NEW-LOOK BISTRO FOR LAWRENCE CENTRE

To celebrate Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake, Rainbows Hospice for Children and Young People has joined with Gable Events to launch the fifth Nottingham Riverside Festival Dragon Boat Challenge. The 2013 Challenge takes place on Sunday 4th August as part of the annual Riverside Festival and is one of the largest and most eagerly anticipated team events in the region. Up to 50 crews representing companies, organisations, clubs and groups of friends from all over the East Midlands are expected to battle it out over the 200m race course on the River Trent at Victoria Embankment. They will all be seeking to knock South Nottingham College off their pedestal as reigning champions whilst raising much-needed funds for the Hospice.

The dragon boats, qualified helms and all racing equipment are provided and each crew is guaranteed a minimum of three races. Teams and spectators also benefit from

being part of one of the region’s largest family festivals with a bustling fair and vibrant mix of music, dance, crafts and food from around the world, staged by Nottingham City Council.

Carol Lester, Director of Challenge organisers, Gable Events, adds; “The Challenge is a great chance to try something completely different, enjoy a fabulous day out and raise money for Rainbows. It is also a fantastic team building opportunity - what better way to get

to know what makes your colleagues and competitors tick? August may seem a long way off but we are expecting the Dragon Boat Challenge to be extremely popular this year so we strongly urge teams to sign up early in order to secure a place”.

For further information and an entry form please visit: www.dragonboatfestivals.co.uk/nottingham or call Gable Events on 01780 470 718.

chorus roundup

Lace City Chorus present Charity Cheque Lace City Chorus, Nottingham’s premier barbershop chorus for women, were proud to present Macmillan Cancer Support with a cheque for £2500 on Wednesday 27th February 2013.

The money was raised by the chorus at its Christmas Harmonies concert in December 2012. The concert was

dedicated to one of their members, Gwen Cresswell, who had died in November after a long battle with

cancer. “ We are sure Gwen was there in spirit when we performed, and are certain she was

there when the cheque was presented, as she had previously been our Treasurer,” said a

chorus spokesperson.

It is with the deepest regret that we announce the death of the dear and much loved President of Bestwood Male Voice Choir, Howard Leese OBE.

Howard passed away peacefully on Sunday 17 February, in Kings Mill Hospital, surrounded by his wife Marjorie and other family members.

Music was a significant part of Howard’s life, having been encouraged

by his mother, a soprano soloist, to enter competitive music festivals with his treble voice, before joining church and chapel choirs. Howard joined Bestwood MVC in 1971. He conducted the choir on many

occasions, including tours abroad, making many friends over the years.

Howard was a true gentleman, in every sense of the word and will be very sadly missed by his family, choir members and all those who were fortunate enough to know him.

Grand Central Chorus - A Musical MixtureIn July the Chorus will be competing at the International Barbershop Convention in Canada.
