I THOUGHT I would share this week with those few of you who read this column from time to time, a section I found in a thoroughbred pedigree book.
The book was written by one of the world’s greatest thoroughbred pedigree experts and is full of fasci-nating information… I’ve read it four times.
Sometimes much more informa-tion can be obtained by reading “between the lines”.
Often breeding “theories” are just that… theories.
What works for one will not work for others. And there is no guarantee it will work all the time.
This is the glorious uncertainty of breeding the greyhound, the race-horse, racing pigeons… whatever.
The most obvious factor is why, when sisters are mated to the same stud dog, one can produce very good greyhounds and the other will not.
Genetic variation of course. Even litter sisters are not the same.
It has always been my aim with this column to stimulate thought amongst greyhound breeders, though it sometimes might sound more like preaching. I believe if we question enough, then we might find the answers, the right answers.
Knowledge is everything, which is why I thought these few para-graphs from a genius thoroughbred pedigree advisor might be interesting to greyhound breeders as well. They are: “To develop a successful racing stable, you have to be smarter than your competitor when it comes to planning matings. Your competitor will plan matings based on selecting a suitable sire for each mare (the foal’s parents) just like a commer-cial breeder.”
“Be smarter, go back one more generation of the proposed mating and look at the future foal’s grand-parents.”
“Great (thoroughbred) breeders like Tesio, Lord Derby and Prince Aly Khan always focused on the four parts of any proposed mating – each grandparent.”
“The four grandparents of any desirable mating are a breeder’s best guide to guess what is likely to be transmitted from the consorting of stallion with mare.”
“The grandparents are the cus-todians of the four major genetic influences in the foal’s genotype and are ‘carriers’ of four sets of
genetic codes which can be shuffled around, mixing dominant and re-cessive traits in a pool – the gene pool.”
“What a foal inherits from its grandparents is the determining element of whether you get a stakes runner or an allowance runner.”
“From 40 years experience, I now know that one must concen-trate on lining up performance in the grandparents of a foal to maxi-mize performance.”
“If all four grandparents of a proposed pedigree are well above average, then the future foal has a better chance to become a stakes runner.”
“If only two grandparents in a proposed pedigree have above aver-age performance (the other two with poor performance) then the future foal is likely to be below av-erage.”
“Performance of grandparents is a key factor to consider when planning matings for the race-track.”
“Probability factors always af-fect a mating, no matter how clever it may be in the way it is con-structed with duplicated superior ancestors, but to be ultra successful one must purposely design pedigree matches incorporating outstanding grandparents if you want a chance to breed stakes performers.”
“From my observation, the ma-jority of foals born each year take their phenotype (visual appearance) from one of their grandparents rather than from a parent.”
“Champion racehorses which disappointed as sires of stakes win-ners often have their influence ex-pressed in their grandsons or granddaughters. It is a paradox that Triple Crown winners were better broodmare sires than they were as sires of winners.”
Of this statement, I took great interest in the factor that said the majority of foals born each year take their looks from one of their grand-parents, rather than a parent.
Look around your own lounge room at your own kids… sons and daughters, produced by the same parents, but so, so different.
My daughter is a virtual replica of my own mother, right down to both of them being worriers.
My son resembles my wife’s father… to a tee.
Let’s look at champion Brett Lee.
He is very much like his damsire New Tears.
Brett Lee’s sire Gun Law Osti (a black) is more like Dusty Rapid (a black) than his own sire the red brin-dle Brother Fox.
Chariot Supreme, sire of Brett Lee’s second dam, Wee Sal, is more
like his damsire Benjamin John than his own sireline of Waverly Su-preme.
It is a real key when planning matings.
The damsire of any stud dog can, and generally does, have an enor-mous impact upon the resultant off-spring.
That is why some stud dogs do not succeed.
Their damsire, the sire of their mother, is not high enough quality to impact great enough on whatever broodbitches that stud dog has mated to him.
It can always be a guide for broodbitch owners when planning a mating to an unproven young stud dog just coming off the racetrack.
Take a very close look at the sire of his mother.
If that sire is dominant at stud, then chances are the young unproven dog could possibly make it.
It doesn’t always work because there are other great factors to be taken into account.
Now back to the original state-ment. “Looks” are not everything. Just because a greyhound resembles his damsire doesn’t mean he will have the same ability.
There is a chance he could, but not necessarily.
A couple of years ago I was at a stud farm in Queensland inspecting a
litter of pups by Just The Best from the former Albion Park greyhound of the year, the outstanding sprinter Tad Smarter.
I’d done some homework on the mating and saw that on both sides of this litter’s pedigree, in very power-ful positons, was the great Malawi’s Prince and the equally as great Promises Free. Both were blue greyhounds.
Before I went to inspect the lit-ter, I reckoned that if there was a blue bitch, or a blue dog in the litter, it might well be worth buying.
I reasoned that it could possibly have received important influences from either Malawi’s Prince or Promises Free, or both.
As it happened, there was a blue dog, the only blue in the litter. Un-fortunately he was not for sale. Joe Menary, who raced and owned Tad Smarter, had already picked him out for himself.
Racing as Dance A Jig two years later, that blue dog pup won the Group 2 Vince Curry Maiden series and pocketed for Joe and his by then partner Steve Lennon a cool $35,000.
Was it a fluke on my part? Maybe… but maybe not. As I said, there are many theo-
ries to breeding the greyhound, some can be right, some not. - courtesy
