FOR THOSE who remember the box-ing deeds of the legendary Muham-mad Ali, you will recall his best inter-view of all-time when asked by a journo why he would beat Joe Frazier in their upcoming fight. The answer was simple” “I am the greatest”.

Well, at Wentworth Park last Sat-urday in the Hotham Body Repairs Association Cup the champion West-ern Australian stayer, Miata had every right to echo those sentiments. The ‘fawn flash’ grabbed her greatest prize to date by eclipsing the time-honoured staying event to make

it 14 wins in succession. However, it was the method of

the victory that had the patrons stand-ing and cheering in disbelief of what had unfolded before their eyes. When the lids rose for the 720 metres journey, Miata was only mod-

erately away from box eight, while Gail Allen (7) and Shimaguni (4) were best to begin.

As they hit the first corner Shima-guni raced to the front, and after a record first section of 15.95 led Miata, who had worked through and slotted into second spot at the lap mark. Shimaguni was travelling well to the back, and as Miata could not take any ground on the leader, a boilover was on the cards.

Supporters of Miata were further worried when their idol checked off Shimaguni at the top bend, as she

didn’t now whether to go inside or out. The crowd started to ‘lift’ when that classy ladies reached the home turn, with Shimaguni still leading but being tackled by Miata, who rallied strongly.

With He’s My Future running on powerfully behind them, Miata surged to the front, and with applause making a deafening sound, went on to score by two and three quarter lengths from He’s My Future, while the gal-lant Shimaguni wound up third, a half length away.

The time was exceptional at 41.94, just outside her track effort of seven days earlier. Miata is by Bombastic Shiraz out of Winsome Bluebird, trained by Paul Stuart, has contested 25 races for 22 wins and two placings.

Carolyn Reinke prepares He’s My Future (Hallucinate x Just Dazzle Em), whose 35 career starts have yielded 14 wins and seven placings, whilst Shimaguni (Primo Uno x Messines) has recorded 20 wins and eight placings from 33 career starts for trainer, Andrea Dailly.

RITZA RYDER was first reserve in the Golden Easter Egg final, and the son of Where’s Pedro would not have been out of place in the main event, judging by his powerful victory in a race named “The Ambrosoli”, which comprises the third and fourth place-getters from the Egg semi-finals.

Tasmanian chaser, Rewind used box one to advantage and gained the lead into the first corner after a quick getaway, and when race favourite, Noble Pedro was checked back to last on the first corner, it was catch me if you can, with Rewind clocking good sections up front. Off the back Rewind led with both Ritza Ryder and Lektra Johnson giving chase, however, by the home turn they had not made any real im-pression on the leader.

As the field turned for home Re-wind did drift off the fence, and in a slick move, Ritza Ryder pounced on the opportunity to charge through along the rail.

Possessing an explosive finish, Ritza Ryder raced clear, going on to beat Rewind by two and a quarter lengths, while Lektra Johnson made a stack of ground to be a nose away third. The 520 metre journey was clocked in 29.71, which was the win-ner’s best time from 13 appearances at the Glebe layout. Ritza Ryder, by Where’s Pedro from Midnight Flare, trained by Mark

Gatt, after 27 career starts has gath-ered 11 wins and 10 placings.

Rewind (Collide x Ricky’s An-gel) has a CV showing 31 wins for and 14 placings from 52 career starts for trainer, Morrie Strickland, whilst Lektra Johnson (Premier Fantasy x Elektra) made it another placegetter for the Dailly team, taking his career stats to 57 starts for 11 wins and 22 placings.

WA champion, Miata etched her name alongside some of the immortals of the staying caper with her brilliant victory in the Group 1 $75,000 to the winner Association Cup at Wentworth Park on the weekend. The honour roll reads like a virtual who’s who of the best half-milers that this country has ever produced.

JASON THOMPSON and owner, Reg Kay knew they had a special dog in the shape of Don’t Knocka Him, but there were sceptics out there about this son of Knocka Norris.

However, it was man and dog standing tall at Wentworth Park last Saturday when Don’t Knocka Him produced his career best effort to win the Macro Meats Golden Easter Egg in front of a packed city stadium. The punters’ favourite had to work hard to come from behind and

claim the world’s richest greyhound prize of $250,000. It was always the belief of his highly successful owner that the blue

brindle chaser would perform at Group One level, but with the Reg Kay’s belief that the Victorian tracks were the most suitable for his dog, the decision was made to send him down to Jason Thompson. That now is the best call made in a long time by the Queenslander, as Thompson had the dog prepared to the minute.

And when the red marble was allotted for the final, the confidence grew immensely.

The large crowd cheered as the lure was set in motion for the 520 metres history-making journey. When the lids opened, Don’t Knocka Him was left a little flat-footed, while Desalle Bale from box four jumped well along with Dyna Bert in the pink and Wez Da Risk (7) was behind them. At the all-important first turn Desalle Bale was able to cross to the fence, however, Don’t Knocka Him pushed up behind them while Dyna Bert was a fraction deep. Down the back Don’t Knocka Him kept prying for a run but Desalle Bale wouldn’t surrender the lead.

Off the top bend a run finally materialised and Don’t Knocka Him drove to the front, and to the cheers of his many supporters, turned for home with a pot of gold in sight.

When the judge called a halt it was Don’t Knocka Him by one and a quarter lengths over Dyna Bert, who finished hard, with one and half lengths to third placed Desalle Bale. The time was a race record for the 23 year history of the great race in 29.60. Don’t Knocka Him is from a No-vember 2009 litter out of Surf Queen, with 30 career starts to date showing 14 wins and 12 placings. The Wheeler Camp claimed the two minor prizes with Dyna Bert (Collision x Gold Rush Bale), trained by ‘Team Dailly’ having graced the track 51 times for 16 wins and 23 placings, whilst Desalle Bale (Go Wild Teddy x Princess Bale), pre-pared Brendan Wheeler, from 21 ca-reer starts has notched 10 wins and five placings.

BREAKDOWN OF $6 MILLION PRIZE MONEY INCREASE

GREYHOUND Racing Victoria (GRV) has announced a record breaking $6 million increase to prize money for the 2012/2013 financial year, with total stakes to reach $36 million in the state. GRV Chairman, Peter Caillard, commented that the prize money increase will directly benefit greyhound racing industry participants and is a result of the new 12 year Joint Venture Agreement that was signed in December 2011. “This increase to prize money is the biggest there has ever been in Australian greyhound racing and GRV are proud to give such great returns. “The extra funds have been made available through the new 12 year Joint Venture Agreement with Tabcorp coupled with the sport’s increasing popularity, which is assisted by the product being fun, exciting and easy to wager on. “Greyhound rac ing in Victoria accounts for 20 per cent of wagering turnover with one in four bets placed on Victorian racing being on the greyhounds,” Caillard said. The $6 million increase will be spread across all Victorian greyhound racing clubs in which

there are two metropolitan tracks and 11 regional tracks. Metropolitan clubs Sandown Park and The Meadows – will receive an extra $900,000 to go towards Victoria’s metropolitan feature races in order to maintain Victoria’s position as the state with the richest and most exciting feature racing calendar. In addition to these increases, The Meadows and Sandown Park will hold a 12 race card at their Saturday and Thursday meetings respectively.

The 11 regional clubs will receive an additional $100,000 directed to country feature race allocations. Minister for Racing, Dr Denis Napthine, commented that the positive relationship between GRV and the State Government had contributed to the increase in prize money. “The Victorian Coalition Government is a strong supporter of greyhound racing. This positive government partnership with GRV has helped to deliver this record increase in prize money,” Napthine said. The 12 year Joint Venture Agreement was signed in December last year and will come into effect in August. Tabcorp Chief Executive, David Attenborough, highlighted the relationship the organisation enjoys with greyhound racing when applauding the record increases to prize money. “I congratulate Greyhound R ac i n g Vi c t o r i a o n i t s announcement to increase prize money levels in 2012. The Victorian greyhound racing industry is a world leader and Tabcorp looks forward to being part of its ongoing success,” Attenborough said.

Greyhound racing’s number one fan, Racing Minister Dr. Denis Napthine.

HIGHY TALENTED sprinter, Peggy May brilliantly led through-out to take out the Group 2 Skill Training Victoria Bendigo Cup over 425 metres last Sunday night.

Going into the race as the fast-est qualifier, the recent Australian Cup finalist was primed to atone for her totally luckless effort in that event and from box three was the second elect with punters at $5.20.

Reigning Victorian and Aus-tralian GOTY, Dyna Tron in box eight had been heavily supported late in betting to go to the traps in the red at $1.90.

Warragul Cup winner, Stagger from the inside trap was third in commission at $7.30, whilst the dog he defeated in that race, Classy Maldini ($9.00) from the four alley was the only other run-ner under double figure odds.

First reserve, Hannie Bale, a kennelmate of Dyna Tron, had gained a run in box two and was at $11.80, with Harold Bale at $41.80, while Peggy May’s ken-nelmate, King Benny was a $23.50 hope and the rank outsider at $58.50 was Make The Call.

With plenty of speedsters en-gaged, the start was going to be important to the chances of at least half the field, as they realistically probably needed to lead to win.

And when the lids flew open it was Peggy May that exploded and after just a few metres was already a length in front.

Harold Bale was also out smartly, settling second, with King Benny also away well, and only Classy Maldini was a bit tardy into stride.

Up to the first mark Peggy May was flying in front, taking the first split in 6.41.

She led by nearly three lengths over Harold Bale, while Classy Maldini was starting a move and coming through on the rail and Dyna Tron was trapped wide out-side of King Benny.

Peggy May was giving them something to chase at the half-way point before passing through the second checkpoint in 11.16.

Classy Maldini had started to close on the leader and was just two lengths down, whilst he’d put three lengths on Harold Bale, and Dyna Tron was still trapped wide, but a place hope in fourth spot.

Coming to the final turn Classy Maldini had caught Peggy May and was looking for an inside run but had to check off her heels then hooked to the outside, which in the wash-up probably cost him dearly.

Coming around the home turn hard against the rail it was Peggy May in charge and she straight-ened for the run-in with what was now a winning break.

Out wide, Classy Maldini was second, with Dyna Tron on his immediate inside trying to finish-on and alongside that chaser was Harold Bale, whilst over on the

fence was King Benny. But Peggy May had it in the

bag and raced to the line a two and a half lengths winner, clocking equal Best Of Night 23.68.

Dyna Tron finished hard to pick up second money, a length and a half in advance of Classy Maldini.

King Benny ran a nice race for fourth in front of Harold Bale, Make The Call, Hannie Bale, with Stagger whipping them in after finding early trouble.

All accolades go to the winner, who just burnt them off with sheer speed to make it two from two at the trip, and 26 from 43 overall, and along with eight placings has put $95,650 in the bank.

The white and black chaser, a daughter of Royal Riddle and Trin-ity County, is owned by Casie O’Neil.

Peggy May’s win capped a fantastic Easter weekend for trainer, Jason Thompson, as he picked up $300,000 in prizemoney courtesy of Peggy May’s win here, Ima Geisha Girl’s win in the Gold Rush Maiden and Don’t Knocka Him’s victory in the Golden Easter Egg. - Darryl Embling

Heathcote trainer and studmaster, Ray Henness with handler, English visitor, John Dixon and David Bale, who outrailed his rivals and snared the $3,000 to the winner Dee Winter @ Stud Easter Cup (GOBIS) at Lords Raceway on Sunday. Traralgon Cup winner, Dee Winter has entertained 23 bitches to date, according to Henness, with his youngest pups nearing six months of age.

DAPTO’S MEETING the night be-fore Good Friday is always a huge with betting turnover and popular support, as it’s often considered the curtain-raiser for the Egg weekend. Last Thursday night the nomina-tions were solid with plenty of city performers gracing the Dogdome, as a draw was difficult to get at Wen-tworth Park on the big night. One classy chaser that made a short trip up the highway from his Nowra home was the Owen Makin trained Street Boss, who was the favoured elect in the Betfair Blue Paws Stake over 520 metres. Boxrise saw Street Boss jump on terms with the others from the rails alley but sufficient pace to hold out both the white vested No Rules League and Tremlett from four. Street Boss led into the back and was travelling like a winner as they left the top corner.

Both No Rules League and

Tremlett were trying hard but he leader had it all parcelled-up as heads turned for home. Down the home running Street Boss was far too strong, defeating Tremlett by four lengths in 29.91, with No Rules League a neck away third. A three year-old chaser, Street Boss, by Bombastic Shiraz out of Fancy Smile, has now contested 43 races for 13 wins and 13 placings.

Tremlett (Velocette x Paris St. Germain), trained by Shaun Evans, has had 39 career starts for eight wins and 11 placings, whilst the

George MIcallef trained No Rules League (Bit Chili x Carlz) after 25 career starts has notched nine wins and nine placings.

MARK ARNCLIFFE is most hopeful his young chaser, Reeah may have a career over the half-mile trip somewhere down the track.

The just two year-old daughter of Velocette has had three starts over the middle distance at this course, and her victory in the 600 metres Sportingbet Stake made it a trifecta of wins. With plenty of age on her side, the astute trainer will bring her along steadily and put some more metres in her legs before having a crack at a longer trip. Exiting box two, Reeah jumped well, as too did the pink, Colonel Zeb.

Reeah had the sufficient pace to hold the fence and run to the front in the straight the first time, with Ca-

dence slotting into second spot, while Super Surf was next in line. Heading to the back Reeah was travelling nicely in the front, while Super Surf had worked into second spot to look some threat as they made their way down the side. Reeah turned for home in front, and with Super Surf unable to make up the ground, the leader held a two lengths advantage at the post in 34.73, while Bomb Disposal got up to take third prize, a further three and a half lengths away. Reeah (x Direct Lass) has now had 17 career starts for four wins and seven placings.

Super Surf (Surf Lorian x Sum-mer Bliss) has produced seven wins and seven placings from 18 career starts for trainer, Tracey Bryant, whilst the Neil Staines trained Bomb Disposal (Big Daddy Cool x Bullet-proof Girl) to date has had 36 career starts for nine wins and 14 placings.

Auction time ONE OF THE BIGGEST Auctions in this state is the annual Dapto Puppy Auction, and you should mark down the date of Sunday, May 6 as one not to be missed if you want to get yourself or some friends into greyhound racing. The Dapto GRC through the ef-forts of CEO, Paul Mack and his team, put on a fabulous day, with a fast-flowing program that keeps the crowd well entertained. As normal with Auctions, there are ‘buy backs’ available, but this one has a very large percentage of new owners who come along and make their first ever purchase. Many of our leading dams have pups on offer, and of course the Dapto Classic each year stems from pups that have only gone through this auction the previous year. Remember the date – Sunday, May 6.

BACKING-UP from his 600 metres win at The Meadows the previous weekend, Don Chendo was a fraction easy in betting.

The most likely reason that punt-ers to shied away from a dog that had won 10 of 26 starts was because he’d drawn the widest alley at the 525 metres top of the straight start.

A bit “hit and miss” at boxrise, Don Chendo was on his best behav-iour this time, settling second beside the pacesetting Shereen Bale, who was trying to break back to the win-ner’s list in town following three re-cent unplaced efforts.

After taking them past the post a lap out in 5.09, Shereen Bale eked out a two lengths break on Cosmic Planet and Don Chendo down the back, reaching the next checkpoint in 17.83.

But even that far from home you knew that the gallant Shereen Bale would have to ‘lift’ if she was to hold out the powerful finish of Don Chendo.

After a lap the son of Where’s Pedro and Kilby Supreme drew level then took over in the 525 metres Rover Mowers Free For All.

He drew clear to beat Shereen Bale by two and three quarter lengths, while Cosmic Planet held down third place, a neck away.

Whilst Don Chendo’s time of 30.05 was way slower than his 29.70 PB around the sprint trip on the Broadmeadows track, his nine Best

Of Night efforts have all been at the northern suburbs greyhound track.

Don Chino, owned by Joy Davis, the wife of Terry Davis, Vice Presi-dent of the MGRA, has raced on 64 occasions notching 23 wins and 13 placings, earning $164,505 along the way, as well as another $2,400 GO-BIS Bonus.

He is trained at nearby Yuroke by Len Ketelaar, also an MGRA Direc-tor.

AND WHILST Darren Brown trained the third placegetter in the Free For All, he fared a lot better earlier in the night when Cosmic Cooper had luck go his way in the Maurice Blackburn Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 525 metres.

Possessing little or no early speed, Cosmic Cooper was slowly away from the three gate and out the back early, whilst up front it was Plankton that clocked 5.13 to lead Boggy Spitfire and Kimba Bale around the first bend.

Although Plankton recorded 17.96 to lead them off the back, Boggy Spitfire was only a couple of

lengths down, while Cosmic Cooper was now third and on the charge.

Zipping through along the rail, the son of Bombastic Shiraz and Cos-mic Goddess stormed past the judge two and a half lengths ahead of Plankton, with a length to Boggy Spitfire third.

From 63 starts, the Louise Park-inson owned racer has won 16 times with 33 placings after 69 attempts, whilst at The Meadows his stats are four wins from 22 outings.

Stand out THOSE ON-COURSE to see the heats of the Top Cat Video Maiden, conducted 10 days earlier, would have walked away impressed by the outstanding run handed in by Starfire Magic.

In fact, despite running just 30.38, it was almost the run of the day.

With the others running similar times on the day, trainer Michelle Mallia-Magri and owner, James Bath were hoping that the others hadn’t improved out of sight.

A noted slow beginner, the ad-vantage of drawing the red in the 525 metres GOBIS final didn’t stop punt-ers from taking a set against the red brindle dog, sending him out at the ridiculous quote of $12.90 on Su-perTAB, while from box six, Jodie Valentino was rated on top at $2.50, with Silver Dave the second elect at $3.20, having drawn the two trap.

When the starter sent them on their 525 metres quest it was Cacia Bale that hit the ground running, with the yellow vested runner veering out at the initial corner after a 5.10 split.

That left a gaping hole for strong railers such as Starfire Magic and

Clam Digger Dan to utilise. But defying them along the back,

Cacia Bale still showed the way over Hot Command and Starfire Magic in 18.01.

And when Hot Command copped a hefty bump nearing the final turn, there was no way they were going to hold out the fast finish of Starfire Magic.

Clinging to the rail, the son of Collision and Starfire Lee took over in the straight then edged clear to grab his second victory by a length and a quarter, with the 30.38 gallop mirroring his heat time.

If he hadn’t speared off at the first bend, the runner-up, Cacia Bale may have led all the way, whilst powering home behind the winner was third placegetter, Clam Digger Dan, albeit nearly nine lengths fur-ther adrift.

Glenda and her mates ‘TEAM DAILLY’ chimed-in with a treble last Saturday night, with the first winner, Glenda Bale taking out the Macro Meats Grade 4 over 525 metres. At $12.90 from the widest draw, there was no real support for the Paul Wheeler owned chaser, with Take It Home starting favourite at $3.20, having been allocated the inside al-ley, and there was also specking for the black vested Tiger Glow at $5.70 . But when the lids rose it was a different story, as Glenda Bale began smartly, and although Darlin Bale kept her wide into the first turn be-fore being checked, the daughter of Collision and Lexy Bale extended her advantage over Ryker Bale along the back straight.

In the run to the judge, Glenda Bale ($9.00) safely defended her lead, passing the post one and ac half lengths clear of the fast finishing Take It Home in 30.22, while Flip Bale ($7.10) wound up third. It was the third win from seven tries over the sprint trip at the North-corp Boulevard venue, whilst overall Glenda Bale has won four of her 21 starts. OTHERS from Daillys’ Anakie kennel that scored on the night were Dyna Morris, who’d won the previ-ous week and was brought back for a tilt at the Hudson Pacific Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 600 metres. Whereas the son of Collision and Gold Rush Bale had powered over the top to beat them seven days ear-lier, this time from the seven trap he was in front a lap out. Invincible from thereon, Dyna Morris won his 16th race when he beat Pacquiao and Breathe Fear by three and a quarter lengths in 34.49. THE THIRD WINNER for the Dailly clan came to fruition via the efforts of Streetbike Tommy. Contesting the Geotechnical Laboratories Grade 5 from the awk-ward five alley, the blue dog beat them out, cut to rail and led Hardy Bale with a circuit to travel. After running splits of 5.14 and 17.88 down the back, the son of Ve-locette and Paris St. Germain was never in any danger of being caught. Raced by Chris Nutt and Shaun Evans, Streetbike Tommy racked-up his fifth career success when defeat-ing Sonorous by over five lengths in a smart 30.08, with Ima Rogue Trader snaring the skinny end of the prize.

THE MEADOWS

Saturday

with Allan Hawkswell

Len Ketelaar and Terry Davis were delighted with Don Chendo, after the honest racer had beaten Shereen Bale, running 30.05 in the Free For All.

Having won over the sprint trip the previous week, Dyna Morris was stepped up to the 600 metres trip and ran out a big winner at The Meadows last Saturday for the Dailly/Wheeler combo, charging past the post in 34.49.

ONE of the Club’s biggest race nights in recent memory brought the curtain down on the most successful carnival in the eight year history of The Gold Rush concept.

Eight meetings in 11 days attract-ing larger than expected crowds, re-cord betting figures, outstanding quality of racing and local racegoer, Terry Page, who took home a trip to Disneyland for his family, made for a memorable two weeks for the Bendigo Greyhound Racing Associa-tion.

The flagship of the carnival, the Skill Training Victoria Bendigo Cup, a Group 2 event worth $40,000 to the winner, was taken out in emphatic

fashion by the Jason Thompson trained speedster, Peggy May.

Showing all the brilliant speed that has seen her salute in 26 of her 43 race starts, the daughter of former top stayer, Royal Riddle led from boxrise for a 23.68 win to cap-off a memorable weekend for the Pearce-dale mentor.

The eighth running of the $10,000 to the winner Polaris Gold Rush Maiden also went to a Thomp-son prepared runner, the highly tal-ented youngster, Ima Geisha Girl.

Despite having turned just 18 months of age the day before the fi-nal, the impeccably bred daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Elite Oriental

carved out blistering sections in a dominant victory, registering the same time as Cup winner, Peggy May, and a win that is sure to be a platform for future big race successes.

For the first time in three years, the Club received enough entries to conduct the Topcat Video Produc-tions Stayers Cup, and up and coming staying star, Irma Bale registered a breathtaking 37.79 victory when landing the $4,000 winner prize.

Despite being new to the track, the sister of former boom sprinters and now freshmen sires, Bekim Bale and Heston Bale, led throughout and clocked a time that is not often seen run over 650 metres, let alone the extra 10 metres of the 660 metres trip at Bendigo.

Irma Bale has now won five of her seven starts since moving up to middle distance racing, and no doubt Graeme Bate will test her over the “700s” in the near future, and she could well be a star stayer for the master trainer.

The inaugural running of the Warehouse Sales Gold Watch pro-duced an exciting finish, with the Jamie Ennis trained Conviction scor-ing the narrowest of victories over Gomes, and in doing so reversed the placings from their heat quinella the previous Sunday.

Drouin trainer, David Curtain’s long trip home was made easier after his smart bitch, Flamena scored a solid victory in the McIvor Road Vet Centre Ladies Bracelet final.

Like the Conviction and Gomes battle in the Gold Watch, Flamena and Surf My Wake finished runner-up in both heat and final of the Ladies Bracelet.

Graeme Bate and Paul Wheeler landed a second Bendigo feature for

2012 when David Bale scored a come from behind victory in the Dee Win-ter At Stud Easter Cup over 500 me-tres.

The Bate/Wheeler combo fin-ished 1-2 in the Easter Cup, with Stefan Bale finishing runner-up to the strong finishing David Bale in 28.24.

Local trainer, Don Jarvis’ Kid Condor gave his stamp of approval for the new Bendigo track with a nar-row 28.42 victory in the Bendigo Ford Super GOBIS final.

The victory was Kind Condor’s third from as many starts on the new track, and the new distance appears to be to Kid Condor’s liking.

The lure of a $12,000 Disneyland family holiday ensured a large crowd was on hand for finals day, and just on 1000 people rolled through the

gates to witness the great racing ac-tion, enjoy the brand new facilities and hopefully head home with a trip to plan.

Local racegoer, Terry Page now has the job of obtaining passports for he and his family after his name was drawn out form the full barrel, and will enjoy return airfaires, accommo-dation and Disneyland passes to the value of $12,000. The BGRA is extremely grateful for the support of its valuable spon-sors and GRV, as without their sup-port The Gold Rush Carnival could not be staged.

Also the support of the owners, trainers, patrons and local commu-nity, who have embraced the new venue in its first few weeks should be congratulated. - Troy Harley

A sartorial resplendent Mick Chilcott congratulates Jason and Holly Thompson after the brilliant youngster, Ima Geisha Girl landed the $10,000 to the winner Polaris Gold Rush Maiden Final (GOBIS) on the weekend. Raced, bred and reared by Reggie Kay, the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Elite Oriental is the hottest youngster in training in Victoria.

Bring on Miata: There are many good judges who reckon Irma Bale could give the WA champion and Association Cup winner a run for her money. The bold front running bitch, pictured with GRV CEO, John Stephens and handler, John Dixon, smashed the 660 metres track record at Bendigo when scoring a near five lengths win in the Topcat Video Productions Stayers Cup in 37.79. A winner of 15 races, including the Horsham 570 metres track record, the litter sister to the ill-fated Bekim and Heston Bale looks destined to pursue a staying career.

NEW RECRUIT continued his domination of feature race wins when he powered home to take out the Betfair Easter Cup over 461 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart last Thursday night.

The Mick Stringer trained dog won a heat and the final of the Reg and Aileen Ivory Memorial Classic last month prior to tackling the Easter Cup series.

He had to settle for a minor placing behind November Digger in an Easter Cup heat but Stringer had him at his top for the final, and he delivered the goods.

New Recruit (Paddy’s Flame - Miss Bardie) is owned by Karlene Cuthbertson and Sally-Anne Wilson, who have proba-bly won more feature races in the past 18 months than any other owners in the state.

New Recruit has been in top form,

with this his third win in the space of four outings.

It was his fifth win on the Hobart U-bend rack from 10 tries, but his overall record is more impressive with 14 wins and five minor placings from 26 Tasma-nian starts.

Hi time for the Easter Cup was a handy 26.19, following splits of 5.07 and 11.17.

Stringer will most likely aim the dog at the Illingworth Classic in Launceston next month.

Whilst New Recruit was a deserving winner, there was a lot to like about the run of Decembrist, who was last at he top turn but rattled home at the rate of knots to go down by only a neck, and he was three lengths clear in the catching pen.

Lika Whisper ran another honest race but is likely to have a short break. Nitro charged TALENTED young dog, Black Nitro has given former Victorian trainer, Paul Hili a brilliant start to his training career in Tas-mania with a scintillating performance to win the Easter Plate final at Tattersall's Park in Hobart last week.

Black Nitro showed his worth a week earlier when he blitzed his rivals in an Easter Plate heat, clocking a slick 25.86 for the 461 metres trip.

Just to prove that was no fluke, the dog mirrored the effort in the final, stop-ping the clock at 25.88 with splits of 5.06 and 11.06.

Black Nitro went on to score by five lengths from Tree Bandit, with Emerald Lee over a length away third.

Hili and his family, wife, Jodie and daughter, Olivia, have been in Tasmania about two months.

They purchased a property in the north of the state and brought about 20 dogs with them, of which only four are racing age.

“Ï couldn’t be happier with how every-thing’s panned out since we arrived in Tassie,” Hili said.

“This dog has been going fantastic ever since we arrived, so I hope it keeps going,” he said.

Black Nitro showed brilliant early speed to lead comfortably, as evidenced by his first split of 5.06.

“His speed and good box manners are real assets,” Hili said.

Canadian Purse IMPROVED box manners paved the way for Canadian Bay’s impressive win in the Easter Purse final over 461 metres at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart last Thursday night.

Canadian Bay began well from box four, but instead of trying to find the rail, where there was plenty of congestion, he stayed wide to avoid the trouble that loomed approaching the home turn.

When he hit the home straight he slipped into overdrive and powered home to score by over a length from race leader, Bet On Black, with Trackside Girl over two lengths away third.

Canadian Bay is trained by Margaret Rossendell, but it was her daughter, Amanda Grice who handled the dog and accepted the trophy.

“This dog keeps on improving and I’m sure he has a bright future,” Grice said.

“He did the smart thing in the run tonight, and that’s a good sign that he’s learning.”

“He had a bit of a problem early on by not beginning too well but he’s getting

better and tonight’s win was his best ef-fort,” she said.

Canadian Bay (Hades Rocket - Jemma’s Image) is owned in Victoria by Emma Gibilisco, and this was his 12th start in Tasmania for two wins and five minor placings. Lucky Day BAGDAD trainer, Alison Walker should be spending a bit of time in the winner’s circle with her promising pup, Lucky Day.

Lucky Day delivered a star quality performance to win a strong Grade 5 event over 461 metres at Tattersall’s Park on Thursday night.

The dog began brilliantly from box four and had a two lengths break over Premier Port heading into the top turn.

When he hit the home straight he extended his margin, going on to hit the line over five lengths clear of Mo’s Dreamin and Ignatius Cain.

It was Lucky Day’s second win from five tries, but his time of 26.29 suggests he is improving with each outing and would only need to hold that form to be a Juvenile winner at Devonport and Launceston before the end of the month.

Jodie, Olivia and trainer, Paul Hili recently moved to Tassie, and Black Nitro is the star of the team, winning last Thursday’s Easter Plate.

FOR THE PAST seven weeks, Ted Medhurst, along with part-owners, Craig Cassidy and Kevin Tolputt, and caretaker trainer, Michael Demedio have carefully planned their assault on the Ipswich Auction series.

And last Thursday night their efforts came to fruition when Rob Pines (Bombastic Shiraz - Velocity Thunder) came from last to win the Group 3 final, worth $35,000 to his connections.

Rob Pines scored by a neck in 30.92, beating Country, with a neck to Atomic Aussie in the most thrilling of finishes.

Cassidy and Tolputt bought Rob Pines as a puppy for $5,500 from Velocity Lodge boss, Steve Williams, and had him reared at Shayne Parker’s property at Coominya until the floods devastated south-east Queensland early in 2011.

“We had to send all our dogs to Tasmania after that,” said Craig. “This dog was one of those.”

`Medhurst educated the dog and sent him back to Queensland seven weeks ago.

Demedio was helping Shayne Parker at his Coominya property, where he met Cassidy and Tolputt.

They asked him to train a bitch called Bouzy Rouge, the first dog he prepared.

She won six races over 395 me-tres at Albion Park.

When it came time for Rob Pines to be sent north, Demedio was the first stop for the partners.

Cassidy and Tolputt are former Tasmanians who have been on the Gold Coast for a decade.

They are professional punters. “We’ve been professional punt-

ing now for 20 years,” said Craig. “I only ever bet on Albion Park on Mondays and Thursdays.”

Rob Pines is likely to have a slight let-up and then could go into an up-coming Young Guns series at Al-bion Park before eventually heading back to Tasmania.

“He could also eventually end up in Melbourne for low grade racing there,” said Craig.

Demedio has already been re-warded for his caretaker role with Rob Pines.

Cassidy and Tolputt have sent him a number of other dogs to train,

including a very promising young-ster.

Rob Pines was not actually put through the Auction.

Cassidy and Tolputt entered 25 pups for the series at a cost of $8,000 without having to put them through the sale.

The final was a thrilling race. Country held the early lead, only

to be headed by Atomic Aussie in the back straight.

Rob Pines missed the start but railed up quickly.

“We are form students,” said Tolputt. “We worked out that his best chance was to miss the start, because we felt he would find trouble at the first turn if he began as well as he usually does.”

Rob Pines was slow away, but stormed home to win on the line.

Poor Ray WILEY Virginia dog man, Ray Knudsen is lamenting his pet hatred of noisy greyhounds.

It’s just cost him victory in the Ipswich Auction Consolation last Thursday night when Stay The Night (Just The Best - Sweet Surrender)

flashed home to win in 30.85 for the Rob Essex kennel.

Stay The Night scored by two and three-quarter lengths over Har-lem, with three and three quarters lengths to third placed Our Don.

It was his fourth win in eight starts. Knudsen and his mate, Chris Es-sex bred the litter from Sweet Surren-der, a litter sister to former star gal-lopers Shadow Boxer and Millen-nium.

They got three of the pups that were broken in by Rob Essex, Chris’ dad and the Ipswich Club President.

“They all broke-in well,” said Rob. “They went home to Ray’s ken-nels but a few weeks later I got the call to train this dog.”

Knudsen takes up the story. “I had a bitch on a farm that came

on season and had to come home to my kennels,” said Ray.

“I had to make room for that bitch, and this dog was a bit noisy, so he was the first choice to go.”

Stay The Night has shown great promise and has already run 30.63 in the lead-up to the Auction series.

He drew poorly through the heats and semis but showed his ability and potential as a stayer by rattling home in both races.

When Stay The Night drew the rails in the Consolation he was al-ways going to be hard to beat.

Ray Knudsen was the first one to tell you that.

Spring to life SOUTH MACLEAN trainer, Greg Brennan has a problem most trainers would be happy to have.

Greg’s highly promising Warru-gal Springs swamped his rivals to win a 520 metres Novice at Ipswich last Thursday night in a fast 30.78.

He scored by a half length over Raine Rose Hi, with five and three quarter lengths to Rylee’s Reign third.

Warrugal Springs is raced in part-nership by Greg’s partner, Vicki Smith and his long-time Roma mate, Alan Cosgrove.

“We’ve got another stayer, said Greg.

“Slow early dogs that get back in their races and flash home can be a problem to place.”

“We will have to look at stepping him up to 600 metres soon.”

Warrugal Springs has already been tried over that distance when second to Your Snookered at Albion Park on March 11 but was beaten almost 13 lengths as the raging hot favourite.

“It was too early for him then,” said Greg. “I’ll give him a few more runs and then it is likely he will go to 600 metres.”

Warrugal Springs was the subject of a $35,000 offer after he brilliantly won a qualifying of the recent Vince Curry Maiden series at Ipswich.

“Alan, Vicki and I just enjoy rac-ing a good dog,” said Greg.

Warrugal Springs is a half-brother to Brennan’s former star stayer, Shadow Boxer and his Futu-rity winner, Millennium.

“This dog is very much like Shadow Boxer,” said Greg, “but this dog will stay on the fence and rail underneath dogs.”

“Shadow Boxer always wanted to get outside.”

ONE THING I have learned over a long period of time watching grey-hound racing is that you can’t change history.

It’s best to accept it and go with the flow.

Take last Thursday night’s Ips-wich Magical Auction final for ex-ample.

Since the race distance was ex-tended from 512 metres to 520 me-tres in 2003, there had not been a winner of the Auction final from box one.

Jill Hay’s County, wearing the red vest, looked the winner at the top of the straight, only to be gunned down by the Ted Medhurst trained Rob Pines, which jumped from the five.

A female trainer had not won the race since 2006, and that trend con-tinued.

Male dogs have dominated the race since its inception in 1989, win-ning 17 of the 23 runnings going into

last Thursday. The field comprised four dogs

and four bitches, and Rob Pines is a dog.

Country is a bitch. Of those 23 runnings, female

trainers have won just three times. Females had three of the eight

runners last Thursday, but it was Ted Medhurst who claimed victory.

And I’d like a dollar for every time the consolation of any race is run in faster time than the actual fea-ture.

It happened again at Ipswich. Stay All Night for Bob Essex

won the Consolation, admittedly with the aid of box one, and ran

30.85. Rob Pines clocked 30.92.

Consolation capers IT WAS GREAT to see trainer, John Reimer at Albion Park for the recent Gabba 40th Anniversary of night rac-ing reunion.

He said he really enjoyed the occasion. Reimer, aged 75, has been to hell and back with operations for cancer in recent years.

Those are the words of his sur-geon, not Reimer’s, but he is doing well now.

He had not attended a race meet-ing for nearly three years.

His long time stalwart, son-in-law Bill Hutchison, makes the trek to Albion Park with the Reimer team on raceday.

Reimer’s list of achieve-ments is quite remarkable, and it’s no surprise that he’s in the Racing Queensland Hall of Fame, inducted in 2010.

Miss Perlita, Rinkeno, Lach-lan Georgia, Black Stout, Half Stout, Great Raider, Sheza Good Sort, you could fill this page with a list of his top performers over more than 40 years.

Right up there with his best is year 2000 Queensland Greyhound Of The Year, Winged Runner.

Any time I reminisce with Reimer about his top performers over the years, he always raises the point that Winged Runner won the Consolation of the Golden Easter Egg in 2000, and in faster time than that year’s winner of the final, Stately Bird.

I’m back! CAPALABA will resume racing on Saturday week, April 21.

The straight track was severely flood-damaged in January this year and an extensive repair program was needed.

Trials have been conducted over the past few weeks, and Racing

Queensland feels confident it’s the time is right to resume racing over the 366 metres straight course.

Hopefully our old friend, ‘’Murphy’s Law’’ won’t reappear at Capalaba.

Prior to the floods, the lure had been operating perfectly during trial sessions but playing up like a sec-ond-hand lawn mower on some race-days.

Ipswich has raced non-TAB on Saturday afternoons through March and into this month of April, and will race this Saturday, then Capalaba kicks in the following week.

Ten race cards have been the norm at the Ipswich Saturday fix-tures.

The club has found the meetings to be profitable and, without wishing any ill wind on Capalaba, would be happy to have some more.

Consider this Wagner’s music is better than it sounds.

CARVE ’ÉM backed-up his recent impres-sive 43.46 distance debut at Angle Park when he gave his rivals a galloping les-son in the Follow Gap On Facebook Free For All final last Thursday night. Drawn box one and starting a pro-nounced $1.50 favourite against the same field that he beat a week earlier, the Peter Hurley trained racer won the start and worked hard to hold the early lead over Samantha McLaren through the first turn. Already leading by seven lengths over Galapagos with a lap to run, Carve ’Ém was setting a hot pace up front, clearing out to a 10 lengths break passing the catching pen. In a race of his own along the back straight, with Leica Drill getting through to second, Carve ’Ém left his rivals in his wake to reach the top turn with a conser-vative 15 lengths advantage. Tiring a little through the final bend but straightening for the run-in 10 lengths clear of Leica Drill, Carve ’Ém coasted to the line. The son of Texas Gold and Geoff’s Mate scored by seven and three quarter lengths to Leica Drill in a new personal best 43.26, with Elena McLaren occupy-ing third place.

Carve ’Em has only had the two starts over the distance for two wins, both in good time, whilst his career record stands at 10 wins and eight placings from 32 starts.

POINT TWO OVER racked-up an-other strong win over 600 metres at Angle Park last Thursday night when he took out the Fundraising @ Chasers Mixed 3rd/4th/5th Grade. Poorly drawn seven yet starting the $2.00 popular pick, Point Two Over made his own luck early by jumping fast and showing good pace, sharing the lead with Bad Boy Pedro a lap out. Slotting into second place behind Bad Boy Pedro passing the catching pen, Point Two Over maintained the pressure in the back straight and railed up to share the lead at the top turn. Working to a clear lead through the

final bend, Point Two Over proved too strong for Bad Boy Pedro.

Careering away along the home straight, the son of Collision and Camden Shiraz coasted past the post five lengths ahead of Busted Bird in 35.08, with Bad Boy Pedro a fading third. Johnny’s cash JOHNNY WILL returned to his winning best at Angle Park last Thursday night when the Petar Jovanovic trained chaser was victorious in the McQueens Tavern & Gaming Free For All. Drawn box four when a $3.60 chance behind race favourite, Elmira Bale ($2.90), Johnny Will began safely and mustered speed to settle down second through the first turn, where Elmira Bale showed the way. After railing past Elmira Bale, Johnny Will took over in the back straight and worked clear to reach the top turn with a two lengths break. Rounding the final bend still two lengths ahead of the determined Elmira Bale, Johnny Will finished the race off powerfully.

Extend his break over the closing stages, the son of Spiral Nikita and Lepre-chaun Pace crossed the line just over three lengths in advance of Elmira Bale, clocking Best Of Night 29.64, while Woodside Woody held down third place. Luckless at his previous two outings, Johnny Will took his record to 11 wins and two placings from just 21 career starts.

KOOMBOOYANA GIRL maintained her unbeaten run in SA when she handed in a Best Of Night run at Angle Park last Monday for trainer, Bosco Stamenkovic. Donning the blue vest and starting at tomato sauce odds of $1.30 in a Grade 5 event, Koombooyana Girl came out run-ning and led all the way, crossing the line eight and a half lengths clear of Allen Goyo in 29.77.

JOKEN KIHAEL put in a strong effort at the same meeting when he won a Grade 4 race for trainer, Petar Jovanovic. Nicely drawn in box one and starting the $2.00 favourite, Joken Kihael took the lead early and made every post a winner when scoring by seven and a half lengths to Naveed Bale in 29.85.

GAWLER TTRACKSTAR last year, Token Class brought up another strong win at Princess Park last Tuesday when he ran fastst time of the day over 400 metres for trainer, Karen Wittholz. A $4.60 chance from box eight, To-ken Class won the start and led through-out, defeating Long Gull Ova by a length and a half in 22.76, with Where’s Pancho third. Dancing to victory DANCING JAY LO notched a hat-trick at Angle Park last Thursday night when the Ossie Chegia trained speedster won the Greyhound Hunnies on Facebook Grade 4. Starting well in the market at $4.60 from box seven, Dancing Jay Lo was away nicely then showed good pace to share the lead with Full Embargo through the first turn. Dropping back to second and caught on the outside of Full Embargo down the back straight, Dancing Jay Lo kicked back to take a share of the lead rounding the top turn. Working to a clear lead through the final bend, Dancing Jay Lo finished full of running.

Racing away, the daughter of Meticu-lous and Tilka Lee crossed the line four

and a quarter lengths ahead of Full Em-bargo in 30.06, while kennelmate, Head Tuner wound up third.

Last week Dancing Jay Lo was also recognised as the official holder of the Angle Park 388 metres track record, as that distance has been in use for more than three months. Dancing Jay Lo ran 22.20 in a Grade 5 event last month, defeating Man Of Honour by nearly three lengths. Top Dog MURRAY BRIDGE trainer, Shaun Matcott is already well on his way to taking out his sixth consecutive SA Leading TAB Trainer with 87 winners to the end of March. Petar Jovanovic currently holds sec-ond place on 34, followed closely by Troy Murray (32) and Lisa Rasmussen (30). Last year’s Leading Non-TAB Trainer, Don Turner is showing the way again this year with 4 winners so far, two clear of both David Hall and Alisha Suth-erland. Emerley Carlos has hit the front in the Leading SA Stud Dog with 14 win-ners, two clear of last year’s winner, Scull Murphy, with Lucky Pristine holding third place on 7. Miss Eva Mai has edged clear in the Leading SA Brood Bitch with 14 winners, three clear of both Emerley Chant and Token Cabernet. Top SA Breeder in 2011, Judi Hurley is showing the way once again with 36 points, followed closely by Ben Murphy (34) and Don Turner (29).

CEE WALLER scored an easy all the win in the opening race on the card, the Bring Your Club To Sandown Grade 5 over 515 metres.

Drawn in box eight as favourite at $3.50, the Wayne Vassallo trained chaser left the gates running and had no trouble leading by three lengths at the first mark in 5.03, with Cocky Boy and Smokey Assassin battling it out for second.

Cee Waller was low-flying at the head off affairs and went through the second checkpoint in 18.69 with a five lengthsd lead over Cocky Boy, while there was a further two lengths to Smokey Assassin.

Cee Waller was in no danger over the concluding stages, scoring by six lengths over Smokey Assassin ($9.10), with Cocky Boy ($4.10) coming in third, two lengths behind.

Cee Waller returned the time of 29.26 to tick-up his first win at his second try at the trip.

The blue chaser, a son of Colli-sion and Brooklyn Belle, owned by the Dazed And Confused Syndicate, has won six of his 10 starts to date.

Destini on top FOLLOWING a hat-trick of seconds, General Destini bounced back to the winner’s list by taking out heat one of the Grenda Management Transit Grade 5 over 595 metres.

Sent to box three as favourite at $2.80, the son of Where’s Pedro and Greys Destiny was third to hit the ground but quickly drove through to find the front and led to the post the first time in 9.26, with five lengths on Beautiful Noise and Karanji.

General Destini was making every post as winner and passed the second marker in 23.31 with nearly an eight lengths lead over Karanji, with Beautiful Noise still battling away third.

Although his lead was reduced considerably, General Destini toughed it out to the Judge, saluting by a length and three quarters over Karanji ($5.30), with Beautiful Noise ($12.90) the next to arrive, five lengths in arrears.

General Destini recorded 34.37 at his first go at the trip and took his tally to six firsts in 15 outings to be the first leg of a winning double for owner trainer, Norm Rinaldi.

CLOAK OF GOLD gave Norm his double by running 34.48 to take out heat two of the facebook.com/sandowndogs Grade 5 over 595 me-tres.

Wearing the green vest at $16.50,

the daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Greys Lemon Ice got home by a length and a half over Lady Grey ($4.70), with a neck to third placed Bubba’s Dream ($2.20 fav).

Nothing could be fyna FYNA BALE took the time honours over the 595 metres by posting the new PB time of 34.09 to take out the fifth heat of the www.rapidivite.com Grade 5.

Coming from box six at $4.40, the Andrea Dailly trained chaser was away well and possied-up nicely in third place at the first mark, two lengths behind the leading duo, Shiny Sudoku and Dons Miss, with the for-mer getting the split in 9.19.

Fyna Bale made her move along the back and claimed Shiny Sudoku at the back corner to poke her head in front and take the sectional in 23.40, while Dons Miss was two lengths away third.

Once in front, Fyna Bale came away from her rivals and scored by five and a quarter lengths over Shiny Sudoku ($5.40), with Ronald Weasley ($29.80) two and three quar-ter lengths further astern.

Fyna Bale, a daughter of Bartrim Bale and Amelia Bale, has scored in two of her five goes at the trip.

The Paul Wheeler owned gal-loper has now been around 31 times in total with this being her seventh win.

Andrea Dailly scored earlier in the night with the Susan Lenehan owned Lektra Ottens, who landed the Kids Night Out Tonight April 5 Mixed 4th/5th Grade over 515 metres.

The son of Bo Frazier and Miss Gabby came from box three at $4.90 to salute by a half head over Johnny Ringo ($2.90 fav) in the new PB time of 29.50, with Fantasia ($14.30) two and three quarter lengths back in third spot.

Best for now ODIE FOR NOW recorded the new PB and Best Of Night 29.20 to take out the twitter.com/sandowndogs Grade 5 over 515 metres.

After lining up in box one as fa-vourite at $1.70, the son of Big Daddy Cool and Shanlyn Lass came out fast and led to the first mark in 5.07, with Gus Bale a neck away sec-ond, with a half length to Miss Abi-lene.

Ode For Now had the speed on around to the back, passing the sec-ond marker in 18.77 with a three lengths lead over Zambora Lover and a further two lengths to Gus Bale.

Odie For Now had it in the bag over the final 200 metres, making his way to the line four and a quarter lengths ahead of Zambora Lover ($16.30), with Gus Bale ($6.20) three quarters of a length further adrift.

Odie For Now has won four from seven tries at the trip, as part of his four wins in eight tries overall.

The black and white chaser is trained by Kel Greenough for the You Can Do It Syndicate.

Barry Blowout finally drew a decent box and rattled home to score his second win over the 595 metres trip in 34.35. Raced by the Blowout Syndicate and trained at Mount Mercer by Sam Bonaccurso, the honest sprinter has now won 13 of his 57 outings. Alana Porter from Hughesdale Primary School was the lucky student who accompanied the trainer during his track presentation.

Sandown Park’s big Easter Egg night was such a success that it will become a permanent fixture on the south-eastern club’s social calendar.

Kids everywhere: Sandown Park’s infield was swamped by children partaking in a massive Easter Egg hunt. The local plovers weren’t happy about being disturbed but might have been rewarded with a few unwanted eggs.

Great training feat performed by Yuroke resident. Lenny Ketelaar. He produced Granduer, better known for his staying attributes, over the 515 metres sprint trip, The son of Mogambo and Off Springer scored on debut at the shorter trip, coming from near last on the first bend to gather-in his rivals and hit the line in 29.65. Raced by Charles Bates of Top Cat Video fame, Granduer has now won over all three distances at Sandown Park, and collectively 16 of his 44 career starts. Pictured with the big brindle chaser is Kingswood Primary student, Jade Crofts.

AT CANNINGTON last Saturday night there were four heats of the $18,000 Sandi’s Me Mum Memorial for WA bred chasers that highlighted the Easter card at headquarters.

The evening marked the trium-phant return to racing of the 2011 Greyhound Of The Year, Vocal En-forcer after 10 weeks on the sidelines, and the champion sprinter, was hav-ing his red vest debut at his 45th ca-reer start, was the punters elect at $1.60.

Trained by Andrew McLaren, he was away slickly but found was put under plenty of early pressure via Black Wolf, who shaded the leader into the opening turn after a 5.68 sec-tion.

Vocal Enforcer rode the rail well and emerged onto the back with a two lengths break.

Passing the 642 metres traps in 18.98, the champ was under severe pressure from the very strong Surf A Coin, who was a length off the leader.

John Crossley’s chaser got within a half length of Vocal Enforcer as they swung for home, with an upset looming, but the popular pick held on well to win by a length in a very quick 30.41.

It was the 22nd career victory for the son of Black Enforcer and She’s Vocal, with earnings now exceeding $153,000 for Rod and Peta Noden. THE MARSH FAMILY has cause for celebration via the performance of Mini Emily, who took out a heat Best Of Night 30.40.

A lightly raced Solve the Puzzle and Austin Lee bitch, she jumped fairly in an even getaway before powering across from box seven to lead in a 5.73 split.

Prepared by Jamie Marsh, the smart sprinter was three lengths to the good of the roughie, Adjustable, with a further four lengths to the odds-on pop, Uno Reltub as they sped along the far side.

Mini Emily ($3.00) was highbal-ling along and clocked a sizzling 18.83 off the back to be five lengths clear of Adjustable.

This classy 26kg bundle of en-ergy extended her break to seven lengths at the judge, with Adjustable holding second over Uno Reltub.

It was Mini Emily’s 12th win from 30 starts and took her earnings

to $40,000. BILL SKIPPER is the trainer of

Al’s Special ($1.70), who saluted by two lengths to Valdahree in the open-ing heat, clocking a smart 30.69.

The favourite was headed by Val-dahree, who sizzled early in 5.66, but by virtue of his inside draw pushed through to lead through the pen.

After clocking 18.90 to the back he tired a little in the run home, but still proved too good for Valdahree.

QUALITY BITCH, Kalden Athena ($4.00) rattled home to claim a spot in the $18,000 final, defeating odds-on fancy, Bomber Command by a length in 30.73.

Dan Biddle’s charge was three-wide in fourth place through the first turn, while Bomber Command was making the play.

Into the final turn Bomber Com-mand was five lengths clear of Kal-den Athena in third, but the daughter of the AGRA Brood Bitch of the Year, Abbadale Gold is a powerful finisher over the sprint journey.

THERE IS PLENTY of early pace in the final and the likely fa-vourite, Vocal Enforcer has drawn trickily in blue, alongside Bomber Command.

Surf A Coin seems ideally drawn and should get a good opportunity to find the rails early from box three. Autumn vines FOUR HEATS of the Autumn Maiden highlighted the pre-Easter Wednesday night card at headquar-ters.

The fastest qualifier was the Peter Hepple trained Whispering Vine, who broke her duck to clock a vastly improved 30.89.

Punters were well onboard, with the daughter of Avalon Chief and Roxy Nell a $5.30 hope at jump time.

A fair start and solid mustering ability saw Whispering Vine burst to a two lengths break into the opening turn.

With a bit of hustle and bustle behind her, Hepple’s charge cleared away to a seven lengths advantage over Super Vigorous through the pen. The margin was unchanged leav-ing the back in 19.42, with the pack well out of contention.

It was a cruise to the line for the Yes I’m Poor Syndicate owned chaser, who chopped 10 lengths off her previous exposed form.

Super Vigorous battled on well to book a place in the final for owner trainer, Craig Shore.

GRAHAM BERRY puts the pol-ish on Typhoon Sally, who took out the second heat after fending-off a late charge by My Little Tubby.

The daughter of Slater and Miss Thunderbolt was sent out the $3.40 favourite at her first start for Berry and began brilliantly to lead in 5.76.

She extended her break along the back and led My Little Tubby by five lengths off the back in 19.23.

My Little Tubby tracked wide through the turn but had reduced the lead to four lengths turning for home.

However, the Joe Dailly trained chaser fell short by a half length, with Typhoon Sally a 31.09 winner.

OUR DIAZ put in a bold front running performance to take out heat three in 31.36.

A $6.00 hope, he utilised the rails well and survived the early squeeze caused by the favourite, perhaps as he attempted to bullock his way to the fence from the outside.

The Kathie Glenny trained chaser entered the first turn a narrow leader in three-way charge in 5.82.

Mid-way along the back, Perhaps and Shear Gundi were closing-in on the lamplighter, who was looking to break through at her 19th attempt.

Our Diaz (Elite State - Fireside Diaz) booted clear by two lengths turning for home in a bunching field and looked to have no immediate threats.

That was before the Keith Hard-ing trained debutant, Freeway Ace emerged from the clouds.

The son of former track record holder, Velocette had the field in ahead of him leaving the back before picking his way through and rocket-ing home, failing by only a neck to catch Our Diaz.

COUNT TWEDO trained by John Carmody caused an upset by annexing the final heat in 31.11 from box seven.

The son of Collision and Precious Love made good on his recent quali trial to clock a 5.77 sectional when setting up his win.

The 37kg tyro was never in dan-ger, saluting by two lengths over Mr. Rooster.

Even though he has drawn the extreme outside in this week’s final, he does look the winner.

Whispering Vine (4) and My Lit-

tle Tubby look the biggest dangers, with Freeway Ace the one to watch in the weeks ahead. Northam sparkles LAST MONDAY the Northam sea-son got off to a flying start under the recently installed lights.

Our country track returns to a daylight timeslot from April 16, with the expectation that the lights come back into action in late spring and an anticipated longer season.

The first winner under lights was the Dan Biddle trained Wicked Party

who, after a slow start, was second but very wide into the opening turn.

He moved back to the rail along the back straight before opening a three lengths break for home

The son of Collision and Sweet Torque closed out the race fairly, beating Tikka Masala by two lengths on 30.09. Kody Charles took a good team to the Avon Valley and came away with a treble, whilst the Kathie Glenny trained Kerrie’s Gift recorded the fastest 509 metres time of 29. 97.

THE FINAL of the time-honoured $20,000 Illingworth Classic is shap-ing as one of the best and most even in the race’s history following the results of the two heats at Launceston last Monday night. Breeders Classic winner, Emer-ald Lee and Jethro produced a battle royal in one heat, with the Debbie Cannan trained and part-owned Em-erald Lee emerging triumphant by a narrow margin. The talented Zavance Man and Just Sioux Me filled the minor plac-ings to qualify for berths in the final, to be run in Launceston next Mon-day night. The remaining heat was taken out by the Mick Stringer trained New Recruit, who had to produce a near career-best performance to run down tearaway leader, Bluffy Lad, prepared at Bagdad by Alison Walker. New Recruit hit the line a neck

clear of Bluffy Lad, with Beaudine and Bell Haven making up the top four. The first four home in each of the two heats qualified for a place in the rich final that carries a purse to the winner of $14,000 Emerald Lee has been a model of consistency, with her early speed being one of the major contributing factors in her winning at eight of her 11 outings, including the past five in succession. She will start from box three in the final and will have to be at the top of her game, with New Recruit

and the zippy Bluffy Lad drawn on her inside. Jethro has drawn awkwardly in box six but if he begins as well as he did from box four in a heat, then he will test this field. Hobart Maiden Thousand win-ner, Zavance Man ran on well in a

heat, and whilst he has drawn box eight in the final, it may prove to be a blessing in disguise. Zavance Man is a powerful fin-isher, and should be within striking distance of the leaders, he will make his presence felt at the business end of proceedings.

Illingworth Classic (515m) box draw for April 16 at Launceston: 1. New Recruit; 2. Bluffy Lad; 3. Emerald Lee; 4. Bell Haven; 5. Beaudine; 6. Jethro; 7. Just Sioux Me; 8. Zavance Man 1st Reserve, Night Train; 2nd Reserve, Buckle Up Gaye.

Emerald Lee holds on to defeat Jethro in their Illingworth Classic heat.

Kelsos Guardian, shown after winning the first series of the new American Derby at Mardi Gras. Also pictured are trainer Dennis Smith, Racing Director Aldo Leone, Chelsea Grozier, David Jaswald, Eric Davis, and the Mardi Gras showgirls.

KELSOS GUARDIAN made it a clean sweep in the American Derby Friday night at Mardi Gras, winning all four of his elimination races then Heat 1 of the finals, going box to wire from the one box. Owned by John Kelly and raced by the J.E. O'Donnell Jr. Kennel, Kelsos Guardian outpaced a fast-closing Goodlucksterling in the home stretch. Caspians Place was third. Both Goodlucksterling and Caspians Place run for the D.Q. Williams Kennel.

Kelsos Guardian (Kelsos Fusileer-Kelsos Hifalutin), who raced impressively at the NGA Fall Meet, ran his record to 10-2-2-1 in 18 starts at Mardi Gras in the 3/8-mile race. The second Heat of the Derby goes this week, with all eight finalists in a re-match, only with a new post position draw. If Guardian wins again, the stake is over. If another entry wins, that winner and Guardian will meet in a winner-decides-all match race. - USA Greyhound Review

D.Q. Williams Kennel’s Wannadobadthings easily won the second series of the American Derby at Mardi Gras on April 6), setting up a two-dog match race this upcoming Friday between Wannadobadthings and the winner of the first leg, John Kelly’s Kelsos Guardian, for all the American Derby marbles.

Owned by Tina Williams, Wanndobadthings is an August 2009 son of Dragon Fire and Leafs Flying, who won by five and a half lengths in a time of 37.20.

Running second in the second series was Williams’ Goodluckstanding, who also ran second the previous week to Kelsos Guardian in the first series of the American Derby.

THE change of government in the sunny north might not be the ray of sunshine the racing codes expected.

The LNP, which crushed Anna Bligh’s Labor team, have agreed to let each code run and administer their own industry.

Further, there is a very strong rumour circulating over the future of the proposed new greyhound venue at Logan.

Don’t be surprised if there is a back flip by the new government and those plans are shelved, and the Gold Coast track will appear again at Park-lands, but inside the trotting track.

Not the ideal situation, as Logan was touted as a stand alone grey-hound venture, which would see greyhound racing determine their own future but the massive costs as-sociated to constructing Logan at $25M compared to a similar model at Parklands for $9M is really a no-brainer.

Spending $25M on a new grey-hound precinct is hard to fathom, considering the costs associated with setting up of The Meadows, the dual Beckley Park Geelong complex and the recently refurbished Lords Race-way at Bendigo.

Young sprinter DES and June Anthony are modestly boasting that it’s all in the genes.

No, the successful breeders have-n’t bred another Australian Cup win-ner, but are over the moon with the success of their young grandson, Ethan, who recently showed his run-ning talent by taking out a couple of Victorian titles at the State champion-ships.

Eleven year old Ethan had no trouble claiming the 400, 800 and 1500 metres titles and looks one of Australia’s most promising athletes.

Dad, Brett was a handy metro-politan footballer in his heyday, win-ning B & F awards in the strong Gipplsnad league after stints with Mentone and Somerville.

Bet the clan can’t wait for the Nationals next year when the fleet-footed youngster takes on Australia’s best runners.

Quick dogs, fast tracks OR, fast dogs and quick tracks.

No matter which way you look at it, last week’s smorgasbord of Group racing certainly produced scintillating times.

Up in Steak N’ Kidney, the Gee Bots hosted their famous Easter weekend of racing where Don’t Knocka Him claimed the Golden Easter Egg in a race record time of 29.60.

Miata triumphed in the $75,000 to the winner Group 1 Association Cup, also in race record time.

The champion WA bitch clocked 41.94, .20 faster than Mantra Lad’s 2010 42.14 victory.

The Easter Egg Consolation, or “The Ambrosoli” in recognition to broadcaster “Velvet Voice” Paul Am-brosoli, was won by the Mark Gatt trained Ritza Ryder in 29.71, .11 faster than True Kihael’s former race record of 29.82 set back in 2009.

The trend continued throughout the night with the unbeaten and highly promising Tifia hitting the line in 29.86 to grab the Centrebet spon-sored $25,000 to the winner Magic Maiden series.

The daughter of Collision and Tifi sliced .07 off Modern Supreme’s 2006 benchmark time of 29.93.

Four race records on the one eve-ning, the Gee Bots were blessed, es-pecially when they were all heavily fancied.

Then the following evening Jason Thompson’s incredible weekend con-tinued with Peggy May winning the $40,000 to the winner Skill Training

sponsored Bendigo Cup. It was the first Cup run on the

new 425 metres Lords Raceway cir-cuit so it was acclaimed as a race re-cord too.

Her sectionals allowed her to equal the first split record of 6.41 but hit the second mark in 11.16, which was the quickest registered since the new track opened.

Thompson also produced the pro-digious Ima Geisa Girl who demol-ished her rivals with ease, scoring a runaway all the way win in the $10,000 to the winner Polaris Gold Rush Maiden series.

She recorded 23.68, exactly the

same time Peggy may took to win the Cup.

At only 18 months of age, Ima Geisha Girl, bred, reared and raced by Reggie Kay, is the hottest young fe-male currently in training in Victoria.

A daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Elite Oriental, she has enormous potential and if she can step up to the testing hustle and bustle of city rac-ing, then the Kay and Thompson combination have a ready made star.

My wife was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror. She wasn’t happy with what she saw and said

to me. “I feel horrible, I look old, fat and ugly, I really need

you to pay me a compliment”. I replied, “Your eye’s sight’s dam near perfect”.

Could these friendly faces belong to the litters of 2012. Three of the successful youngsters who won at Sandown Park on December 11, Lethbridge kennelled Ice Trucker, General Destini and Destini Fireball are raced by former Queenslander, Norm Rinaldi. The two big litters are from two American imported brood bitches, Greys Lemon Ice and Greys Destiny, from matings to Bombastic Shiraz and Where’s Pedro. Both litters were whelped in March 2010 and to date six have won on Victorian metropolitan tracks, whilst Black Attitude, raced by Richard and Vicki Wisener in Queensland, has saluted at Lismore in New South Wales. General Destini looks the stand-out at the moment, as he has strung together three on the trot, including back to back wins at Sandown Park in 29.56 and 29.59 respectively.

“IT just got harder and harder to be competitive”, were the words Paul Hili relayed to OTL.

Sure the rewards are there, “but I dropped 12 kilograms and found the pressure was overwhelming me”.

So I decided, we, wife Jody and six year old daughter, Olivia, were going to have a change of scenery”.

Paul Hili, son of legendary trainer, Joe Hili, is now a resident of Exter, near Launceston, and reckons he should have made the move sooner.

“I was looking after 75 grey-hounds, whelping, rearing, and trying to train a team of my own.

“I couldn’t see any future over here unless you have a big team and the support staff needed to run it”.

“Mum and dad’s Keysborough property was being sub-divided and I thought about moving to Warragul, but the cost of land compared to what you can get down here in Tassie is incomparable”.

The shift has seen Paul and his family acquire a modern four bed-room house on 28 acres in the north-east, at Loira, near Exter.

“I’ve invested heavily in a new $100,000 20 dog kennel block and our property is just 50 metres from a big national forest”.

A further 200 metres walk and I can throw a line in the West Tamar River”.

“We left in February and just love it here, so peaceful and tranquil”.

“I’ve got a dozen in full work, and Black Nitro appreciates the easier competition”.

Black Nitro has taken Tasmania by storm.

The highly talented chaser, who had won five races at his former home track at Sandown Park, has been explosive in his only two runs on the Apple Isle.

A very strong debut winner on March 16 at Launceston, where he thrashed his rivals in a sizzling 29.57 BOD was followed up at Hobart when he once again recorded a BON performance in 25.86, winning by nearly seven lengths.

“Over in Melbourne on the city tracks he would be in a charge of five to six greyhounds to the first turn, where over here, it’s a lot easier, he has to contend with just one or two rivals”.

“He’s grown up, more mature and got more confidence”.

“Sure there’s a massive difference with the prizemoney structures but

there’s less pressure, less stress”. “I’m just 25 minutes from

Launceston, just under an hour to Devonport and two and a half hours to Hobart, which is just like a trip to Sale on the weekend”.

“Many people back in Victoria I’ve spoken to said they had thought about doing the same thing, but I did-n’t wait around, as we had been down here on holidays and decided to make a go of it”.

“So far we’re loving it here and hopefully can win our share of races”.

Hili hasn’t taken a backward step as a greyhound trainer, he just saw that the opportunities were dwindling in Melbourne where it’s a hard and tough environment to survive.

He should be admired for his foresight, and OTL wishes him and his family all the best for the future.

No doubt Joe and Sophia will be regular visitors, and if there’s a TAB handy and the chance to cast a line into the river, you never know the well liked couple just might follow their young clan.

Paul Hili with Jodi and Olivia plus Black Nitro, undefeated in four starts in Tasmania. Paul has reallocated to a 28 acre property at Loira, near Exter. Plenty of galloping room plus a new kennel block has the former Keysborough trainer optimistic about his future.

Drawn in box seven as favourite at $2.40, the son of Bo Frazier and Miss Gabby led all the way to score by six and a quarter lengths over Blonde Potter ($21.50), with Claretown Force ($28.20) picking up third money, three lengths back.

Mark Delbridge combined with the Arvo’s Syndicate to score a double and Arvo’s Vixen was their first leg when she posted 26.00 to take out heat one of the Damsels Dash over 460 metres.

The daughter of Mister Twink and Arvo’s Helena wore the blue vest at $5.50 to a half length win over Icebox ($13.50), with Conne-mara Suzy ($6.10) a length and a quarter further afield.

Arvo’s Hannah completed the double for connections by recording 26.24 to score in heat three of the Damsels Dash over 460 metres.

Rated at $9.50 out of box four, the daugh-ter of Path To Power and Arvo’s Carisma got there by a nose over Eldis Bale ($2.00 fav), with a neck to third placed Tandar Lass ($5.40).

Cookie gets the biscuits Casino March 30 EASTER arrived early for Tweed based owner/trainer Lee Wylie when his greyhound Naughty As (Big Daddy Cool x Go Wild Lady) took out the Westlawn Finance Non graded 411m event at the Casino Greyhound meeting on Friday, March 30. Naughty As had been drawn as the train-ers jackpot dog and in scoring collected the jackpot of $9210 in addition to the winners prizmoney. Naughty As had to produce her best (23.09 secs) and made full use of the inside box to lead most of the way and hold off deter-mined challenges from Black Dolce and Four Winds and having a length to spare on the line. A The win was the greyhounds 13th in a 42 start career and her third from 7 seven starts over the 411m at Casino. Consistent kennelmates Wal’s Bonanza and Miss Joyful continued on their way for connections Bob Cooke and Fayzy. Wal’s Bonanza (Hot Syrup x Teddy’s Jackpot) pro-duced a career best (22.84 secs) to take out the 1-3 wins series final over 411m. Beginning well from box 1 (his first start from this box) Wals Bonanza carved out a smart first section of 8.51secs and went right on with the job finishing off in 14.33 secs and appears to racing better than ever following a lengthy absence from the track. Kennelmate Miss Joyful (Collision x Joy-

ful Lee) scored her third win on end in taking out a 5th grade 484m. Missing the start mar-ginally she mustered speed quickly when she hit the ground and recorded a very quick mid-dle section (12.28 secs) before moving away and recording 27.17 secs overall. First starter Erin Norris (Knocka Norris x Proper Jessica) gave punters some anxious moments before taking out a maiden 411m. Beginning poorly from box 1 Erin Norris worked her way through the field and eventu-ally scored by 1¼ lengths from Prolook and Kooringa Doll in 23.18 secs. Given her poor start and interrupted run the time was exceptional and the Charlie Northfield youngster appears to have a bright future particularly if she improves her box manners. Another youngster to catch the eye was the Claude Dacey trained Dayseas Lockie (Cosmic Rumble x Classy Kate) who followed his maiden win last week with a slashing win in a 5th grade 411m. Overcoming box 6 Dayseas Lockie quickly stamped his authority and went on to win in 23.07 secs a marked improvement on his maiden winning time of 23.86 secs. The Deidre and John Free owned and trained Just the Phantom (Just the Best x Crystal Fire) accounted for a handy field of 5th graders in taking out a 411m event. At start 54 and having his first outing on the Casino track Just the Phantom was quickly away from box 5 with a good first section of 8. 57 secs before scoring in 22.99 secs and recording his 11th career victory.

There will be no racing on Good Friday and racing will resume on April 13. - Casino Crusher

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, April 12th, 2012 - Page 69 NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

Rajah’s romp Grafton April 5 FOUR HEATS of the time honoured Gillespie Plumbing Easter Maiden over 407 metrtes were held at Grafton’s Thursday afternoon meeting, with the Gary Clarke trained Rajah’s Hope taking time honours, while Iluka based trainer, Mick Patterson will have weight of numbers on is side with two successful debu-tants.

Rajah’s Hope looked to be one of the better bets of the day on the back of his excel-lent 17.38 Performance Trial recently, and the $1.70 favourite was never in danger of defeat after a quick beginning.

The talented son of Collision and I’m Exceptional set up an unassailable lead in the early stages, and despite the fast finish by Trick Killer out wide, Rajah’s Hope always had the edge, going on to score by a length in 23.23, with Tranquil Shandy an honest third in the time of 23.23.

Mick Patterson rugged-up littermates Iluka Lass and Dodge Da Roger, and although each possesses differing racing styles, both were too good for their opposition.

Firstly it was Iluka Lass, who displayed very good box manners and early speed through the first section, and although tiring a little in the run to the line, she had clearly done enough to score.

Iluka Lass recorded 23.40 after fending-off Letter Rip Ryan and Primitive Lots.

Despite also leading to the first turn, Dodge Da Roger was slower through the first section.

However, he showed he may be better over a longer journey in the future, as raced to the line strongly, defeating Jackup and Taco Taco.

The final Easter Maiden winner was the Dave Irwin trained Found Two, who needed to find a lot more than that down the home straight to reel-in tearaway leader, Incandes-cent.

Those who supported the $2.20 favourite were not feeling too confident when they en-tered the home straight, with Found Two spot-ting that greyhound five lengths.

But he arrived in the nick of time, eventu-ally getting home by a head over Incandescent in 23.47, with Viper Room third.

Backing-up the Maiden heats were six heats of the Betfair Blue Paws series, with the Vicki Wisener prepared Braxon’s Best impress-ing as the fastest heat winner in a smart 23.00.

Starting a healthy $7.30 on the NSW TAB, Braxon’s Best raced more like an odds-on pop.

After spearing to the lead from the outset, she extended the gap with every stride, even-tually winning by a eight lengths to Lis Vale, while His Dream was a further seven lengths away third.

On the strength of this effort, Braxon’s Best looks the early favourite for the final.

Gary Keep is a relative newcomer to Grafton greyhound racing, making the long trip from his home base in Queensland.

However, his efforts were rewarded when Nan And Pop and Spot Away both scored good wins in their respective heats.

Nan And Pop took out the opening heat by the barest of margins, holding out the strong finish of Mr. Inquisitive.

Nan And Pop recorded a brilliant opening section of 8.35 and just may well strip that little bit fitter in the final, courtesy of that run, and could well improve on her 23.41 sprint.

Gary then had to wait until the final event of the day for the second leg of his winning double.

Spot Away made full use of the wide draw to hold out Larry Trick by a length in 23.37.

Other heat winners were Hustler Ambi-tion, who made a winning debut in this region when recording 23.43, while Tranquil Lily had to work hard in the time of 23.30 for Sandy Robertson, and the Jamie McHugh trained Only A Sparrow obviously took a liking to this track by running a smart 23.15.

In the remaining races, Scissor Queen was simply brilliant again, making it win num-ber seven on the trot with a highly impressive 27.15 win over the gallant Nancy Trick in the Clarence Valley Sheds Mixed 4th/5th Grade, while the John Corrigan trained Blue Style Ode relished a return to box one with a dominant 22.95 Best Of Day win in the Carters Canine Capers Stake. - Grafton Guru

He then suffered an injury and has just returned for a back to back wins in Brisbane, with it all ahead of him now.

Sarah and Andrew Monaghan bred and reared the young dog at Cockatoo Lodge in Dyrabba.

Sarah has been in greyhounds all of her life, with her family also being in the business.

Originally living in Orange, where she met Andrew, whose family also shared a love for greyhounds, although in a much smaller way.

They had good dog called Miss Spicy, who ran back 2005/2006, winning the Austra-lian Cup and the Adelaide Cup.

That gave Andrew and Sarah the start they needed to get their business up and

running. A few years ago they relocated to

Dyrabba, where they rear and train for a select few clients.

Sarah also runs a home beauty busi-ness.

This Thursday night (April 12), Lismore GRC will hold a fundraiser for the North Coast Cancer Institute.

MELRINA MISS, who ran in the Country Challenge final at Forbes, overcame trouble to run near-record time in her heat win. Trained at Young by Vicki Prest, Melrina Miss covered the 498 metres in 28.72, just .16 outside Only Bill’s track record. “They knocked her down a couple of times but she kept coming,” Prest said. “I bred Melrina Miss by mating my bitch, Amazing with Over Flo, and Lester Sheather bought two, including Melrina Miss, leaving her with me to train.” Early in her career Melrina Miss was little more than a handy sprinter, but when she led throughout to break 30-seconds for 520 me-tres at Wentworth Park on March 23 she took her city tally to two wins and three placings from nine races.

********** CATCHA GRENADE, whose runaway win in a heat of the Wentworth Park Magic Maiden was declared void when a fallen dog ran back into the field and disrupted the minor plac-ings, trialled sensationally at Gosford on Tuesday. The Doreen Drynan trained maiden puppy sped over 515 metres in 29.87, which is .05 faster than Main Drag, a winner of six Wentworth Park races, took to win the night’s top grade sprint.

********** THE NEED for two knee replacements will force Hunter Valley trainer, Tom Pullman to cut back on his workload for the first time in 47 years. Pullman, who operates a trial track at

Keinbah, between Cessnock and Maitland, trained a winning double over 400 metres via the efforts of Libby Tokaam and Lucy Tokaam at The Gardens last weekend. “We conduct around 120 trials weekly and leading trainer, Jason Mackay regularly uses our straight grass track, which is identi-cal to Appin racecourse,” Pullman said this week. “I am 65 and have not been without a greyhound since I was 18, so with these operations looming I need a spell.” “Libby Tokaam and Lucy Tokaam are very quick but have not been tested beyond 400 metres.” “Libby Tokaam has won twice from box two after landing two lengths in front at boxrise, but she failed from box one after missing the jump and pulling back to reach the outside of the field.’ “They both prefer an outside box, with Lucy Tokaam the faster.” ‘Tokaam’ greyhounds have been a fix-ture on the TAB circuit over the past decade. The name combines the first two letters of Tom and Helen Pullman’s three children, Tony, Kayla and Amanda.

********** THERE have been few faster Maiden wins over 530 metres at Canberra than the 30.59 posted by Uno Oz last Sunday. Trained at Yass by Lisa McFarlane, Uno Oz was having his first race in four months when Berridale Lady maintained her un-beaten record over the 530 metres trip. McFarlane is the daughter of Ken Staines, amongst the most successful train-ers in the Canberra region for three decades.

Page 70 - National Greyhound Form, Thursday, April 12th, 2012 NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

NEW CENTURION SMOKE HOME joined our Centurions Club by winning at Sandown on March 29 at his 100th start.

The son of Bombastic Shiraz and Daintree Lady commenced his career at Sale on January 24, 2010 and scored in 25.57 over 440 metres. Since then he’s won 27 races, with his latest being in Free For All company over 515 metres when he posted Best Of Night 29.44… a time that’s also his PB there, where he’s won nine races in total.

He also won the 2011 Bill Collins Memorial there in 29.85, beating a top field that included Cosmic Planet, Birth-day Boy, Mystic Apple and Radley Bale. He’s won four times over the 440 metres at Sale, where his best is 24.98, and three times there over the 520 me-tres with 29.41 being his quickest effort. He’s been successful four times over 513 metres at Traralgon, where 29.53 is his fastest time, as well as winning four races over the 525 metres at The Mead-ows with a PB of 29.97. On top of that, he’s won at Cran-bourne over 520 metres in 30.57 and at Geelong over 460 metres in 25.94. Finally, he scored at Shepparton over 450 metres in 25.54 and over 450 metres at Ballarat in 25.58. Trained by Lauren Gorman for Gary Joske, with the form the black May 2008 whelp is in at the moment, I’m sure he’ll pick up plenty more wins before he finally hangs up the collar and lead. Well done Smoke Home! Another top litter SMOKE HOME is a member of a top litter that to date has won 88 races.

Apart from Smoke Home’s 28 wins in 100 starts, the other members are Dain-tree Angel 5 from 41; Daintree Jewel 6 from 26; Daintree Lover 10 from 70; Dain-tree Palace 23 from 68 and Daintree Rocket 16 from 74.

Their sire, Bombastic Shiraz obvi-ously needs no introduction, whilst their dam is Daintree Lady.

She’s a daughter of Light Of Fire and

Honchytonk Girl, who in turn is by Head Honcho from Tenthill Melody.

Tenthill Melody is a daughter of Far-loe Melody and Tenthill Flyer, with that damline going further back to National Queen and Bay Road Queen.

Of course, Tenthill Flyer is also the dam of champion bitches Flying Amy and Tenthill Doll.

Anyhow, you now get an idea where this line gets all of its ability from.

It certainly is one of Australia’s most successful female lines. Four from four CONTINUING the saga of box one at Wentworth Park over the 520 metres trip, I wonder how the four reds went in the semi-finals of the Golden Easter Egg.

In the first semi, El Caballo, a $28.50 outsider, had the red vest on, and quali-fied for the final with his second to Dyna Bert, beaten three and three quarter lengths in 29.71.

So far, so good! In the second semi, $12.10 elect,

Time And Money finished second, going under by a head to Desalle Bale in 29.78.

Perfect score to date,… two into the final, and not favoured runners either.

On to the third semi and Fancy Dean, who was well in commission at $4.10, was rolled by Hot Irish, who won by a half head in 30.18.

That’s three from three through to the quarter of a million dollars to the winner final.

In the fourth semi, Don’t Knocka Him sported the red vest, and as the $3.20 second elect, he scored by six lengths in the fastest time of the four, 29.57.

Well, if box one is no good up there, just think what the result might have been if it was. Record safe FOR the time being, High Earner’s Aus-tralian stakemoney record is safe.

Dyna Tron failed to qualify for the final when he was checked out of the fourth GEE semi-final.

Radley Bale was already out of the series, while Oaks Road will have to try again elsewhere in his bid to reach half a million dollars in prizemoney.

And with no real big money events on for a while, he’ll have to do it the hard way… in dribs and drabs.

As for the final of the GEE, the most any potential winner will have if success-ful is Fancy Dean, and whose winnings would tally $378,995. Another track record MIATA added another track record to her collection by easily landing a heat of the Group 1 Association Cup. She zoomed over the 720 metres trip in 41.81, thus erasing Chinatown Lad from the record books.

The daughter of Bombastic Shiraz and Winsome Bluebird carved two lengths (.12) off the Taswegian’s time standard.

It also seems that barring bad luck she’ll add another Group 1 to her already impressive record of 21 wins from 24 starts, whilst she now has 12 wins on the trot and is closing-in on the consecutive TAB wins record. Love the mentality I FAIR-DINKUM love the mentality that prevails within some circles of greyhound racing. There is, and has always been a section of our participants who seem to think that everyone who’s successful must be cheating. The ‘Tall Poppy Syndrome’ works with the long-time successful owners, trainers and breeders, who always seem to end up fodder for those who need to find some excuse why they continually fail. So calling the successful people ‘cheats’ fixes and solves all those prob-lems.

Granted, we have had people, and probably do still have, who have cheated, but from my 42 plus years in the caper, I’ve seen a lot who have tried that… and have come and gone.

And some without a choice in the matter, as they were caught and rubbed out.

But let me show you how this mental-ity has worked in just two cases.

A relative newcomer to the training ranks had some reasonable success from day one; the truth being that he bought wisely.

He had purchased some dogs from very successful lines, and that’s a pretty good place to start.

He went on to breed from those dogs and ended up with better dogs.

After winning a top race, he was fronted by a couple of locals, who wanted to know what he was giving his dog.

Another trainer, who had been around for many years without ever hav-ing what you would call a real good dog, finally found some decent success.

He told me that in all those earlier years he’d only ever been half-hearted about training, but recently decided to get fair dinkum about it and give it a real good go.

And he said; “It’s funny, but the harder I work, the more success I have.”

Does that sound familiar? Now I see people talking about some

new ‘wonder drug’ that turns “Labradors” into speed machines.

Really, where can I get some? I have some Chihuahuas here that if I

can get to run as fast as a greyhound, I’ll be rich.

Okay, I’ll be serious here for a mo-ment, assuming such a product exists in the form it’s supposed to be in, and let’s say we make it available to everyone.

I mean, if there’s a product that can improve our dogs or help them be the best they can be, then it should be up there with vitamins and tonics and that sort of stuff that we already have.

Whatever happened to EPO and ‘Elephant Juice’?

But do you know what will happen? Let’s say it can make your dog eight

lengths faster. All these slow dogs that now get

beaten 12 lengths won’t turn into champi-ons, in fact, they won’t go from being beaten 12 lengths to being beaten by four lengths either!

They’ll still get beaten by 12 lengths because the good dogs will also be run-ning eight lengths faster.

Slow dogs are slow dogs, and in most cases will produce more slow dogs if bred from.

So getting a bitch, no matter how well bred she is, who couldn’t run to save her life and then going to a mediocre stud dog, in nearly all cases will not produce champions… or even dogs with city-class ability.

So that’s where you people who label every successful person ‘a cheat’ need to start.

Stop breeding from slow dogs, then after that, rear them properly, feed them properly or go and buy some decent dogs ready to go on with.

And then bend your back with some hard work and see where you end up.

And hopefully when you win a good race, someone will not walk up to you and ask: “What are you giving it”, or worse still, say you must be ‘a cheat’ because you’re successful. But what is BUT what is a performance-enhancing drug?

At the moment we seem to have a generic drug rule, or that’s how it appears to me.

Can say Vitamin A, B, C or D make your dog run faster?

Is there any evidence to suggest that giving your dogs those vitamins (any or all) that it’ll actually perform better than it currently does?

Because if they make it perform bet-ter, then shouldn’t they be “illegal”?

And calcium powder, does that make an animal perform better?

Have there been tests to find out if it improves dogs?

I mean, even if that improvement is insignificant, even say .01 on the clock should see it as a prohibited substance, shouldn’t it?

Because if you think about it, two dogs hit the line locked together in the GEE final and it’s a dead heat, they share the prize.

But if one was having Cornneys for breakfast and the other Ricceys (apologies if there are products out there with those names) and it was detected that the better nutritional value from the Ricceys was equivalent to .01 of a sec-ond, well that’s the difference between a dead heat and an outright victory.

I mention this in case someone thinks I’m splitting hairs, because in a nutshell, that’s all it takes sometimes, isn’t it?

Yes, it can all come down to what you feed your dog as to whether it has an “unfair” advantage over its rivals.

Should better quality food be called performance-enhancing?

For mine, this is all in a ‘very grey area’ because there are clearly products we must not use, and said products have-n’t got a hope in hell of making a dog any faster.

However, things that may not have been tested, and that could give you an advantage, are “legal”.

Can it get any more ambiguous than that? Off to stud I CAUGHT up with Graeme Bate last week and I asked him what was in store for his champion chaser, Radley Bale. Graeme informed me that his star

boarder has now gone to stud, and went to Queensland last week to his new home with ‘The A Team’.

The son of Big Daddy Cool and Minkara Bale retires with $570,883 in prizemoney, which was collected via 37 wins and 27 placings in 102 career starts.

The highlights of his career were undoubtedly winning the 2011 Golden Easter Egg and his “run of the year” effort to land The Temlee in 2012, both Group 1 races.

The red fawn chaser was also run-ner-up in the Adelaide Cup and the TOP-GUN, as well as running third in the Bris-bane Cup… all at Group 1 level too. He was also placed third in both the Warragul and Traralgon Cups, as well as being runner-up in the Shootout. And who could forget that he was the only dog to beat El Grand Senor in 2011, rolling him at Sandown in a brilliant 29.40. Just looking through Radley Bale’s stats, he won eight of 13 from the red; seven of 17 from the black; seven of 19 from box three; five of 12 from the two; four of 12 out of box four; three of seven from the pink and scored twice in 10 jumps from the five.

And even though his box six stats show one from 10, at least that means he won from every trap, highlighting how great his efforts have been.

I wouldn’t mind betting that he’ll be pretty popular with breeders. Your Say “Well Said” stated, “Good onya Lenny Jones for setting the mindless people of this caper straight.” Exactly! “Been There” with, “We had a good run with our dogs for years then all of a sud-den the legs fell off.”

“I made a choice to buy rather than breed, and our fortunes turned around.”

“I read where Paul Wheeler thinks it’s too hard to try and do everything, and I have to agree, as I clearly remember scratching from a race that I thought I could win because a bitch I had went into labour.”

“So now I just concentrate on training my dogs.” Yes, it is a fact that we are not Super-man, and can’t do everything. I’ve been there with the breeding, rearing, educating and training my own dogs, and I’d never attempt that again. What’s that saying, ‘horses for courses’, very true. Do one thing… give it you’re all and you’ll do it well. “Money Bags” asked, “With that Court decision thing, does that mean we’ll get more money?” Is that all you think about, money? Well, as I see it, we most probably won’t be worse off, that’s for sure. “Ground Beef” stated, “I changed to ’roo meat and my dogs are hopping the boxes like never before.” There’s one in every crowd, don’t give up your day job...hehehe. Oh, and aren’t we lucky we don’t run hurdle races anymore, as you’d never stop winning them. “Pork Chop” bemoaned, “Dividends are so poor I couldn’t afford a pork chop with my winnings.” At least you’re winning aren’t you, as opposed to choking your dough....hehe. This week’s Teaser THIS WEEK all you need to do is answer the questions and rearrange the first let-ters to spell out a champion. 1. The Egg is run at this time. 2. Second highest money earner 3. Distance between dogs 4. First half a million winner 5. Fastest ever at a trip 6. Triple Crown Champion 7. First and second in order 8. What a Qualy is called Last week’s answers 1. Allen Harper 2. Rewind 3. Oaks Road 4. Undisputed Dos 5. Noble Pedro 6. Fancy Dean 7. Dyna Tron 8. Young Snozz

L-CARNITINE SUPPLEMENT L-carnitine is a small water-soluble molecule.

In the dog, L-carnitine is synthesized primarily in the liver from the amino acids, lysine and methionine.

L-carnitine is concentrated in heart and skeletal or normal muscle by an active membrane transport mechanism.

Blood carnitine concentrations correlate closely with myocardial carnitine concentration. The normal hear t obta ins approximately 60% of its total energy production from fatty acid oxidation. L-carnitine plays an essential role in this process, and likely also plays an important role in the regulation of glucose metabolism within the heart.

It may well be involved with other cardiac functions, which are as yet undiscovered.

As in all cells, the engine room, or energy producer, is called the mitochondria. Fatty acids have difficulty crossing the membrane into the mitochondria, and this is where carnitine is essential.

Carnitine combines with the fatty acid, and the combination easily crosses into the mitochondria.

L-carnitine is not thought to be an essential nutrient in the diet of the dog.

In normal dogs, synthesis in the liver

is believed adequate. However, a study some time ago

found that L-carnitine concentration in a variety of commercial diets ranged from 0.7 to 5% of that found in beef.

It would appear that there is a high rate of destruction of L-carnitine in processed foods, especially those imported from overseas.

I mentioned a few weeks ago the strict quarantine requirements for those companies importing animal feeds into Australia.

A variety of clinical signs have been reported in carnitine deficient humans, including encephalopathy, muscle weakness, recurrent infections, “failure to thrive” and congestive heart failure.

Carnitine deficiency has been associated with heart muscle ill-Health in several species, including dogs.

The science suggests that it is beneficial for a greyhound, and more specifically its heart, to receive an L-carnitine supplement.

It will help the fuel utilisation of the heart muscle.

It seems to help some dogs that are lacking in stamina, and because it is a natural constituent of the diet, it is acceptable within the rules of racing.

It comes in injectable form, and the dose for a greyhound is generally 1.5 to 2ml given twice weekly.

It is authorised for intravenous use but will work equally as well given into the muscle. It is important to adhere to the label instructions with any medication.

I have recently come across trainers administering Hepargine directly into the vein.

Although this is mainly the amino acid arginine, it is an irritant injection and it is not recommended by any route other than intramuscularly or orally.

It can irritate the lining of the blood vessels, leading to damage, and potential sites for life-threatening infections, such as encephalitis, to develop.

Serious damage to the blood vessel lining will lead to an aneurysm, and with high blood pressure activities, like running, sudden death could be a consequence.

National Greyhound Form, Thursday, April 12th, 2012 - Page 71 NATIONAL GREYHOUND FORM NOW ON SALE WEDNESDAY IN NSW - Distributed by John Fairfax.

A “big time” New Zealand Derby heat victory at Cambridge as the NZ Derby finalists was established last Thursday. And Thrilling Brat failed to fire-up during Sydney’s massive night of Easter chasing action; however, his sister, Thrilling Quest certainly did when nailing her last-stride 520 me-tres victory. Bigtime Kinvara will start the April 19 $20,000 New Zealand Derby final at Group 1 level at the Cam-bridge Raceway as a warm favourite following his emphatic heat victory in last Thursday’s heats. The Lisa Ahern owned, trained and bred chaser returned the slickest of the five qualifying heats contested after cutting out his 457 metres as-signment in a slick 25.34. “That will have tightened him up nicely for the final,” said Ahern’s partner, Brendon Cole. “He’s had a niggling toe problem, resulting in him

missing some work leading into the heats.” Bigtime Kinvara will be joined by the other heat winners Snicko 25.41 for Ben Craik, Inishrush 25.47 (Dave and Jean Fahey), Russell Hart 25.67 (John McInerney) and Grizz 25.68 (Steve Clark). Joining them will be Another Dollar (McInerney), Peking Tom (Clark) and Koko Whizz (Dave Schofield). The reserves are Corby (Ahern) and Thrilling Havoc (Karen Walsh). April 19 promises to be enthrall-ing night of greyhound racing, with

superstar stayer, Swift Fantasy having accepted for the Group 2 $12,000 Theresa McDonald Memorial Cup to be decided over the 747 metres stay-ing journey. Her clash with the Fahey trained Dangle The Carat should be an abso-lute beauty.

Cole was undecided if champion greyhound, Little Mother will return for the $5000 Jack Hannon Memorial Cup after yet another sizzling Cam-bridge 457 metres victory (25.27) when posting her 80th career win on Thursday.

“There’s a clash between that race and the Manawatu Cup (she won that last year).” “Lisa will make a call later in the (this) week, as to which race she will contest,” added Cole.

Participants are advised of an amend-ment to GRV’s Racing Calendar. The meetings inadvertently listed to take place on Tuesday 31 April are incorrect.

Please be advised that the meet-ings that are listed on Tuesday 1 May will run as printed. These meetings are: Horsham: Twilight and Warragul: Night

GREYHOUND RACING VICTO-RIA (GRV) has appointed Mr. Dennis Timewell to the position of Compli-ance and Risk Manager on March 6 2012. The position is designed to man-age the financial compliance and risk management responsibility of the Vic-torian greyhound racing industry,

with a focus on ensuring that the in-dustry has a culture of compliance. This includes meeting all govern-mental financial requirements and assisting clubs where possible. Dennis brings to the role more than 10 years experience with two of Australia’s largest organisations; Coles-Myer and Visy.

With three wins from four starts at Cambridge, and a 25.34 NZ Derby heat victory, Bigtime Kinvara will be one of the popular fancies in Thursday’s Group 1 final.

Inishrush found the line before his rivals in a NZ Derby heat, registering his first win after three attempts at the Cambridge circuit, clocking in a good 25.47.

Russel l Hart opened his Cambridge account by annexing a NZ Derby heat in 25.67.

NEXT SATURDAY’S College Causeway/ Killahan Phanter Easter Cup final will have three runners from Dolores Ruth’s kennel and two of Conor Fahy’s ‘Tyrurs’ in the line-up, which will be completed by Owen McKenna with his veteran, Pablo Supreme.

The major talking point of the night was the brilliant performance from the now legendary Tyrur Big Mike, as he raced to another famous victory in second semi-final.

The four year-old son of Brett Lee and Tyrur Temptress made a more accomplished return king than Lazarus.

Only recently returned from his third or fourth retirement, and after serving a number of bitches up to the eve of the first round, Big Mike has improved with each run in the competition and looked as good as he did back in the 2010 Irish Derby, where he finished second behind litter brother, Tyrur McGuigan, as he totally dominated his second semi-final opponents.

It was all so easily described as he bombed away from trap three and led by a few lengths into the back from Piercestown Sand and Royal Patrol, despite doing his usual wide route around the opening bend.

However, he then accelerated impressively down the back to move clear as Piercestown Sand was swamped by the pack.

Moving very wide off the final corner, Tyrur Big Mike was abso-lutely awesome as he thundered up the straight and won by four lengths from Irish Derby winner, Razldazl George, with the latter’s litter brother, Kingo a short head third, and just the minimum ahead of fourth finisher, Royal Patrol.

The time of 29.72 was a brilliant one on the night, and some 28 spots quicker than the other semi.

That first semi saw Dolores Ruth’s Razldazl Will produce the form that had been anticipated for some time.

It was a closely contested race

all the way, with Coolard Chief just the early leader from Tyrur Willyjoe and Coolykereen Imp.

This is how they hit the bend, with Coolykereen Imp momentarily taking the lead but again headed early in the back by Tyrur Willyjoe and Coolard Chief.

A couple of lengths covered the field early in the bac,k with Razldazl Will back last.

Tyrur Willyjoe looked an as-sured winner when he struck for home at half-way, but Razldazl Will really flew up the outside to go sec-ond on the third bend.

It was Willyjoe out front turning for home, but Razldazl Will flew home to take the verdict by a length from Tyrur Willyjoe in 30.00, and it was then two lengths to Pablo Su-preme third.

The draw didn’t work out all that well for Tyrur Big Mike, however, as he drew the inside trap from where in the past he has lost consid-erable ground on the bend by drift-ing wide. The draw: 1. Tyrur Big Mike; 2. Razldazl George; 3. Kingo; 4. Pablo Supreme (m); 5. Tyrur Willyjoe (w); 6. Razldazl Will (w)

Barefoot in the park BRYAN AND KATHLEEN Mur-phy could have a big Saturday next weekend as they will be represented by Barefoot Allstar in the Scottish Derby final and Priceless Spark, which looks the sure favourite to land the McCarthy Insurance Group Oaks at Curraheen Park.

The Paul Hennessy trained Priceless Spark was soon in front in the first semi on Saturday but was joined and perhaps momentarily headed by Smoke Pixie off the final bend.

But Priceless battled back to win

by a neck from Smoke Pixie in 28.38, with Tailteann Queen a length and a half third. Draw for Saturday’s final: 1. Tivoli Maeve; 2. Tailteann Queen; 3. Price-less Spark; 4. Ballinclare Meg; 5. Smoke Pixie; 6. Lass Cause (w)

Ronny Wuyt’s Irish Derby final favourite, Rockchase Bullet was too good for his rivals as he claimed the Betfair 600 ticket at Limerick.

Improving by 25 spots on his semi-final performance, Richard Forrest’s dog hit the front on the first bend and opened a three lengths advantage over Socks Rocks by the third bend.

The latter closed again on the run-in but Rockchase was two lengths too good as he stopped the clock in 32.42.

Milldean’s sensational trial IT CAME as no real surprise when Milldean Panther clocked the fastest time ever recorded in Ireland for 525 yards when having his first look at Curraheen Park on Saturday night in a pre-racing trial.

What it did prove, however, is that the dog has recovered from his injury and is now ready to resume his sensational career.

Milldean didn’t fly out, as he posted a 3.42 first split, but he then absolutely flew and drew gasps from the very large turn-out to watch his trial.

He tracked magnificently as he stopped the clock in 27.87, a time which is 16 spots inside the track record that is held by Ardkill Jamie and Droopys Robinho.

It is also one spot quicker than the national record, which was set at Drumbo Park back in 2010 by Lee-view Jet. While Milldean is not yet a con-firmed entry for the Formula One Grand Prix, which starts at Curra-heen next Saturday, it is a possibility that he will turn out there for the two-run competition.

Canadian Bay pictured with handler, Amanda Grice, after the Marg Rossendell trained chaser had registered 26.69 when landing the Easter Purse final at Tattersall’s Park in Hobart on April 5.

Stretched to the limit: in his endeavour to snare a Mixed 4th/5th Grade at The Meadows, Cosmic Cooper stormed home along the rail to score going away, recording 30.18 for the 525 metres trip on April 7. Raced by Louise Parkinson, the Darren Brown trained ultras consistent dog has been in the money 50 times from 70 attempts.
