By Yvonne MillerFor over a year the South Barber
Board of Education debated the issue of changing from an eight-point to a 10-point grading scale. Board President Steve Allen had set the May meeting as the deadline to decide whether to change from the 93-100 grading scale to a 90-100.
South Barber currently has an eight-point scale, which is: A=93-100; B=85-92; C=77-84; D=69-76; F=0-68.
The 10-point grading scale is: A=90-100; B=80-89; C=70-79; D=60-69; F=Below 60.
Through the months of debate, some board members favor a 10-point grading scale, which they said more schools have and would put South Barber on a more equal playing field when it comes to scholarship considerations, admittance applications, extra-curricular eligibility, etc.
Opponents say the 10-point scale would lower expectations of students and hurt their standard of education.
At the May meeting Monday night, Allen originally gave each board member five minutes to tell why they felt one way on the debated issue. Board members agreed they would rather have a 15- to 20-minute open discussion among themselves. Allen conducted the meeting with all members present including: Dooli Rugg, Deb Helfrich, Jeff Black, Mike Anderson, Mark Pollock and Dana
Roark. Superintendent Brad Morris and board clerk Julie Johnson also sat at the table.
Prior to board discussion, two teachers representing all teachers of USD 255 addressed the board. They were Melva Armbruster and Tim Rector.
Both Armbruster and Rector voiced their opposition to the 10-point grading scale and explained in detail why to the board.
Armbruster said, “Don’t settle for a level playing field. Let’s raise the bar and continue our higher expectations by keeping our (current) grading scale.”
Rector said changing the grading scale directly affects how teachers do their job. He said not all students learn in the same manner. “When you expect less, you get less,” Rector said. “We don’t want to lower our expectations and get less.”
Before board members started to discuss the issue, Rugg moved to adopt the 10-point grading scale, seconded by Roark. Then discussion ensued with divided opinions still evident.
The board certainly agreed on one thing. They are concerned that very few students take upper level math and science classes or score in the upper echelon of ACT scores. They discussed the possibility of weighting classes to encourage students to take those tougher classes and not be penalized if they don’t make an A+.
Anderson, who voiced opposition
to changing the grading scale, said he had a former South Barber High School graduate tell him they were not prepared as they needed to be for competing against the world. He said that’s another reason “to keep our standards high.”
Pollock said he has done lots of research on this issue and said, “This is not going to hurt our school in any way.” He realizes some students are doing anything to get the A grade.
“Aren’t we there to have our kids learn? Not to just get an A. ” Pollock asked.
It’s not just students who have their grade point averages hurt with an A- for getting a 93 that would be an A on a 10-point scale, Roark said. She said parents of students who struggle at the bottom end of the grading scale have told her they can also see benefits for their children. When asked, teacher/coach/Athletic Director Steve Roberts said regarding extra-curricular eligibility, students are to have one week to bring their grades up for eligibility.
Roark also wants to weight classes. She added, “Most colleges are on a 90-100 scale.” Black said he thinks it would be sufficient to just weight classes without changing the grading scale.
When the board voted they were divided. The three voting to change the grading scale were Rugg, Roark and Pollock. Voting no were Helfrich, Black and Anderson. This forced President Allen to break the tie. He voted yes, to change the grading scale. He used a sports analogy to describe the current grading scale: that for every touchdown Attica got 10 points and South Barber got only eight points.
Allen said his research shows, “The 10-point scale is the way the trend is going.”
The board designated a committee of Allen, Roark and Anderson to help implement the new grading scale with Technology Director Luke MacKinney and a group of teachers who will be determined. After the vote, the numerous teachers present were visibly unhappy and left the meeting. Those teachers were

By Lynn L. MartinThe 25th Annual Alva High School
Academic Banquet featured Dr. Marc Campbell as the main speaker. Campbell is a 1992 graduate of Alva High School with later an undergraduate degree from Northwestern Oklahoma State Universi-ty.
Next he attended the OSU School of Veterinary Medicine, earning his DVM. Campbell now owns two veterinary hos-

pitals and also spends time on the road representing veterinary supply firms. He and his wife, Lacey, along with their three children live on an acreage near Pawnee.
Campbell opened his speech by say-ing that while his resumé might make him look accomplished, he told how he brought his two-year-old daughters on this trip and he was lucky to survive a stop at the convenience store without his daughters’ shop-lifting something, going into the men’s restroom, or being abducted or run-over. Right now he is looking for a foreign diplomat to negoti-ate with his two-year-old daughters. He noted that his two daughters got their looks from their momma, but they also got her hardheadedness.
Think Outside the BoxTurning to his speech, Campbell
said, “I’m not going to make a speech of things you’ve already heard, like ‘Don’t do drugs’ or ‘Work harder.’ Instead, I want us to think outside the box a little on how to be successful in life.”
Campbell said there are three com-mon definitions of success: most people think of wealth, another is being popular, and another one is accomplish a goal.
“It’s pretty easy to be successful when you are tall, good looking, rich, smart and athletic. Since I am none of those things, I guess I was invited to speak so the students could find out how in the heck I became successful,” he joked.
“I think another important charac-teristic of being successful is learning to overcome failure. Go back to times in your life when you had the choice of either quitting, folding up the tent or go-ing home.
“My defining failure moment was my freshman year in vet school. I apparent-ly forgot everything the great teachers at Alva High and Northwestern taught me. I get up to OSU and take a physiology test and got a B. Took an immunology test and got another B. I thought I was doing great.
“On the next tests, everybody else was up studying all night. I thought, ‘Heck, I’ve got this down. I’m going to go to bed.’
“So I get up in the morning and go take the tests and leave with a pretty un-

May 30 is the last day to apply for voter registration in order to be eligible to vote in the June 24 Alfalfa County election, Board Secretary Kelly Stein said today.
Stein said that people who are United States citizens, residents of Oklahoma, and at least 18 years old may apply to become registered voters.
People who have never been registered to vote before or who are not currently registered in the county of their residence and those who are registered but need to change their registration
information may apply by filling out and mailing an Oklahoma voter registration application form in time for it to be postmarked no later than midnight Friday, May 30.
Stein explained that applications postmarked after that time still will be accepted and processed; however, the applications will not be approved until after June 24.
The county election board responds in writing to every person who submits an application for voter registration. The response is either a voter identification
card listing the new voter’s precinct number and polling place location or a letter that explains the reason or reasons the application for voter registration was not approved. Stein said that any person who has submitted a voter registration application and who has not received a response within 30 days should contact the county election board office.
Oklahoma voter registration application forms are available at the county election board office located at 300 S. Grand Ave., Cherokee, and at most post offices, tag agencies and public libraries in the county. Applications also are available at www.elections.ok.gov.
Voter registration deadline is May 30

“If any of you in this room have been to some type of professional school, both of those grades are flunking. You’ve got to at least make a C.
“So the next day I was invited in to talk to the anatomy teacher who asked, ‘Why did you flunk my test?’ I explained I didn’t study. Then I had to talk to the Dean who also asked why I flunked this test. And once again I had to explain I blew-off studying.
“I was very embarrassed, uneasy and felt really bad. The brief failure had its effect. I never made less than 95 on any other test I took and made it through vet school.
“So please understand, there are times in your life you will fail and you simply need to overcome it. You shouldn’t be afraid to fail. Instead, don’t be afraid to keep going on,” he said.

may be better at something and you may be better at something else, but we’re all the same.”
In illustrating the importance of treating people with respect he suggest-ed a situation where you are on your way to your first job interview, and you’re running a little late and you pull into the parking lot and cut somebody off, or you’re walking in the parking lot and a lady drops her brief case and her papers scatter everywhere, but you don’t help. Then you get to the door and fail to help a little old lady who is struggling to open the door against the wind. Then you get to the elevator and push “go” before a little old man can make it. “Hopefully, none of those four people show up at your job interview. If you had helped them out, you might have hit a home run. Otherwise, if you showed no respect, you are probably out of there.”
Pay AttentionCampbell suggested that his wife
would say he is not the best at paying attention. “However, if you notice great leaders, they are super at paying atten-tion,” he said.
Using a Star Trek illustration he said, “Don’t be the fourth man. He’s going to be left behind. Pay attention. Pay atten-tion to your boss. Pay attention to the people working for you.”
EntitlementCampbell said one of the notes on
his prepared speech was “Don’t expect people to owe you anything.” He said,
“Mr. Parkhurst saw that note and came up with the word ‘entitlement.’
“Don’t think you are entitled to any-thing. You’ve got to earn it,” he said
Be ConsistentCampbell said the most successful
thing he has done in creating two vet-erinary hospitals is to be consistent in surrounding himself with good people.
He said, “How can I have two vet clinics and yet run around the nation for a drug company? It’s because I hire good people.”
Be Flexible“Five years ago, I wouldn’t have be-
lieved it had you told me I’d own a small animal practice in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Twenty-five years ago had you told me I was going to be veterinarian I would have also said you are crazy,” he said.
“One of the last things I have to say, ‘Is never quit learning.’”
Goldbugs are RareHe also mentioned that in his drug
representative job he’s had the opportu-nity to travel to a lot of places. He said, “Let me tell you – you are so lucky to be from Alva, Oklahoma. This also ap-plies to Oklahomans in general. Others around the country accept you. They like you. We Oklahomans are intriguing to them for some reason and they want to talk to us. You should be proud. Be proud to be from Alva, Oklahoma.”
Using school sports mascot names, he said, “There are a lot of Warriors, a lot of Tigers, lots of Lions ... but there aren’t very many Goldbugs!”

By Rebecca KinneyAlfalfa County now has another
choice in caring for juveniles removed from their homes. The commissioners signed a contract with the Texas Coun-ty Juvenile Detention Center.
When a district court calls for the detention of a juvenile, it will be the responsibility of Alfalfa County to transport the subject to Texas County. The county will pay $29.36 per child per day. The courts and the Office of Juvenile Affairs retain all responsibil-ity for the determination and duration of the detention of juveniles.
Road crossing permits were ap-proved as follows: District 1 - $11,000,
District 2, $3,250 and District 3 - $10,000 for a total of $24,750. The specific permit information that the Newsgram usually publishes were not printed Monday.
The county clerk was asked to go out for bids for stiping a four-mile stretch of blacktop east of Burlington.
A contract with Welch Bank on the purchase of the previously approved dredge machine was approved. The commissioners also approved payment No. 6 to Reeder General Contractors on the new fair building. So far $1.7 million has been paid of the $2.3 mil-lion total. This payment was $351,174.
Troy Shepard and Doug Murrow were approved as requisitioning offi-cers and Amy Flanagan was named re-ceiving officer for the fairboard.
A contract with Circuit Engineer-ing No. 8 was approved for emergency transfer road funds.
Alfalfa County commissioners approve detention contract

These retakes are for all Alva schools. They will be taken at Mickey White’s house at 8th and Flynn, located across from the Alva Middle School starting at 9 a.m. The photos will likely be wrapped-upby 9:30 a.m. So don’t be late. You will be responsible for getting your student to the location. This retake opportunity is a make-up session for students who were absent or ill. It is also an opportunity if you didn’t turn an order in and now wish you had. Occasionally parents from other school districts bring their students because most other schools do not offer outdoor spring photos.
Please fill out this form or bring a school picture envelope with payment and turn it in at the time the photos are taken.

upset for many reasons, one of which was why implementation was not already determined before the vote.
MacKinney said regarding IT issues the change will not be difficult to implement, but must be “clean and clear.”
Allen said the change must be complete by no later than July so changes can be made in handbooks and teachers can prepare.
The remainder of the three hour meeting will run in the Newsgram next week. The other big item on the agenda was approval of capital improvements. The board approved a bid of $225,600 to do redo the pot-hole filled and cracked parking lot at the high school with a new super slurry substance and then double chip seal it.
Another of the capital improvements approved was a bid from Heartland Seating for a redo of the football bleacher home side seating at $83,188. The visitors-side bleachers will be improved at a cost of $15,718 and a new press box at an estimated $50,000. Superintendent Morris said the existing press box has wood rot. More details about improvements will follow in next week’s article.

By Yvonne MillerA Burlington High School gradu-
ate, Dr. Sue (Jenkinson) Diel returns to her hometown Friday night to give the commencement address to four grad-uates.
Diel, who is fondly referred to as Sue by the folks at Burlington, has a distinguished educational career. She has always praised Burlington Public Schools for their excellence. She’s of-ten said that the educational founda-tion she received in Burlington pro-vided her with many opportunities and opened a number of doors that led to her success.
After high school she earned a
bachelor of arts degree in english ed-ucation from Southwestern Oklahoma State University and a master’s degree in guidance and counseling.
She taught and was a guidance counselor in several Oklahoma schools before returning to Burlington where her daughters Megan and Laura attended school. That’s as Diel began her career at Northwestern Oklahoma State University (NWOSU) in Alva – first as an instructor. She earned her doctorate in administration at Oklaho-ma State University.
At NWOSU she chaired the educa-tion division, was director of teacher education, student teacher director and a full professor. She was later a profes-sor at Friends University in Wichita, Kan.
After her retirement in 2011, Diel and her husband, Curtis, moved to Enid. Her new “career” is caring for her two grandchildren, age two and six.
