In addition to contributions to ITU, we have also been promoting standardization of the VVC *1 next-generation coding system at MPEG, *2 an organization responsible for standardization of multimedia coding systems. In addition to proposing and evaluating coding tech- nology for ultrahigh-definition video, we are also providing images for evaluation and contributing to standardization decisions. Next-generation audio systems At ITU, we have been contributing to the establishment of standard specifications for audio metadata and audio file formats for implementing next-generation audio services of object-based audio *3 with the 22.2 multichannel sound system. At the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), we have also been involved in standardizing a method to transmit audio metadata via the existing digital audio interface. Integrated Broadcast-Broadband system and data services We are promoting international standardization of Hybridcast technology for an Integrated Broadcast-Broadband system and a system for providing data services by SHV broadcasting. We have been contributing to ITU standardization of the latest functions for integrating television and smartphones, functions for video playback for TV browsers, etc. We are also working on Hybridcast system for cable television. Efforts by NHK to Promote International Standardization

1

All program production and broadcasting are based on audio, video, and trans-mission standards so that programming can be viewed with any TV receiver. The use of internationally recognized standards also facilitates program exchange and production collaboration by broadcast stations in different countries and reduces the cost of equipment. NHK is applying the results of research and development in stan-dardization activities and is working toward the standardization of broadcast tech-nology that can be used worldwide through participation in the International Tele-communication Union (ITU) and other organizations.

■ Video codingTo implement the terrestrial broadcasting of SHV, we have been working on inter-

national standardization of a high-compression video coding system. In addition to contributions to ITU, we have also been promoting standardization of the VVC*1 next-generation coding system at MPEG,*2 an organization responsible for standardization of multimedia coding systems. In addition to proposing and evaluating coding tech-nology for ultrahigh-definition video, we are also providing images for evaluation and contributing to standardization decisions.

■ Next-generation terrestrial broadcastingThe satellite broadcasting of 4K/8K Super Hi-Vision (SHV) was launched on December 1st, 2018. The research interest is

moving on to SHV services delivered by terrestrial broadcasting. Given the legacy features of the current terrestrial digital broad-casting system, NHK is investigating a new broadcasting system that can provide SHV broadcasting for fixed reception and Hi-Vision broadcasting for mobile reception on a single channel.
