Summer is keeping my family busy with trips to the beach, ice cream sampling and projects around the house. When our granddaughter stays with us, and we’ve all had enough activity for the day, we’re happy to know there are great programs on NHPTV that suit the tastes of adults as well as kids.
A few items of note: If you’ve been reading the Connections newsletter on your iPad each month, we want you to know we’ve switched to another application that will allow it to be read on all devices, mobile and otherwise. That launches this month and does not require a special app. Look for the link on our schedule page nhptv.org/schedule.
And, I have two save-the-dates for you: our special preview of The Roosevelts next month (see box below), and our first NHPTV Family Fun Day here at NHPTV on September 27, complete with
PBS characters and lots of fun!

The seven-part, 14-hour film, which premieres on NHPTV September 14, follows Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt for more than a century. On Dick Cavett’s Watergate, the 40th anniversary of the Watergate scandal documents it in the words of the people who lived it: from the botched burglary at the Democratic National Headquarters; to the must-see TV of the daily Congressional Watergate hearings; to the ongoing behind-the-scenes battle between the White House and “The Dick Cavett Show,” culminating with the resignation of President Nixon on August 9, 1974.Friday, August 8 • 9 PM on NHPTV PRIME

Masterpiece Mystery!Poirot is David Suchet’s
signature role, playing Agatha Christie’s suave Belgian super-sleuth Hercule Poirot. In this episode of Poirot’s last season of sleuthing, “Dead Man’s Folly,” a wealthy financier and his wife stage a grand party at their new summer home. Poirot is a reluctant guest, urged to attend
by his old friend Ariadne Oliver (Zoë Wanamaker), who suspects the “murder hunt” game may turn out to be real.
Whether he’s on holiday abroad, taking a countryside break or simply going about his business, Poirot exercises his “little grey cells” by helping police investigate crimes and murders - whether they ask for his help or not.Poirot: Dead Man’s Folly • 8/3 at 9 PM on NHPTV PRIME
A medical series with astounding suspense, supreme satire, and smart sixties style, Breathless is a compelling drama about a vanished era. Set in London in 1961, it follows the exploits of doctors, nurses, and spouses connected with a busy obstetrics ward at a National Health Service hospital.
It’s a time when gynecologists are all men and nurses aspire to a trip down the aisle with a good-looking doctor. Abortion is illegal, the Beatles are still nobodies, and society is on the cusp of profound change. And no one seems to have more going for him than Dr. Otto Powell. Breathless • 3 parts • Sundays at 9 PM • 8/24, 8/31 on NHPTV PRIME • continues in September
Time Team America SpecialsPlunge into the grime and glory of real-life archaeology:
epiphany and exhaustion, discovery and disappointment. Through the dirt, the sweat, the dust and the rain, archeologists explore the mysteries of the past through what they find buried below the ground. Part adventure, part hard science, part reality show, Time Team America applies the latest technology and the team’s collective expertise to solving the riddles of the past — against a ticking clock. The team has just three days to find out what it can at each site. Viewers will feel they are right in the trenches with working archeologists as they uncover the artifacts of our past. Coming up:
• Tucked between upscale homes in suburban Maryland are the remains of an 1830’s plantation — once home to Josiah Henson, the slave who inspired Harriet Beecher Stowe’s famous novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin. What remains here of his life and legacy?
• In western Oklahoma, the bones of massive 10,000-year-old bison mingle with the remnants of early man-made weapons. What can these bison bones teach us?
• Camp Lawton, near Milan, Georgia, housed 10,000 Union prisoners at the end of the Civil War. The remains of the camp have long been lost to history.
• The site of what is believed to have been a 1,200-year-old village is located near Mesa Verde, Colorado. What did this settlement look like and how did life here shape human history? Tuesday, 8/19 & 8/26 at 8 PM • on NHPTV PRIME
