Welcome

Happy New Year and welcome to your fourth Lancashire Recovery College

prospectus.

This term we have found homes for the College across Central Lancashire, Blackpool and West Lancashire. We’ve listened to your feedback and know you prefer to come to the same location to access the Recovery Learning offers we deliver. We will be offering further pilots in East Lancashire and Fylde & Wyre, please get involved to let us know what you would like to see in your local community.

We continue to work in partnership with local community groups, charities and organisations to bring you the varied and community focussed opportunities you’ve identified.

We have formed Advisory Groups in each locality which everyone is welcome to attend. Getting involved in your local Advisory Group means you will help us to co-design the service to ensure we are connected to the community and responsive to its needs.

We continue to put co-production at the heart of everything we do and our Curriculum Development Groups provide a supportive environment to share ideas, co-create new opportunities and engage with our partners.

We’ve got some great new opportunities available this term including photography and movement & dance, as well as our popular courses around living with conditions and mental health awareness.

It goes without saying, none of this would be possible without the support of our Volunteers and members. Please continue to spread the word about Lancashire Recovery College so we can continue to improve and develop.

About the Recovery CollegeWe aim to provide something fun and different for the people of Lancashire, improving health and wellbeing through learning and opportunity.

We hope to offer people the skills and tools to empower them to take control of their health and wellbeing. We aim to build resilient Lancashire communities with well supported, informed and proactive citizens.

With us you can share skills, make friends and connect with your community to become part of something bigger where you live, and it’s all FREE to access!

Who is the Recovery College for?The Recovery College is for anyone over the age of 18 living or working in Lancashire & South Cumbria.

You don’t need to be accessing Lancashire Care services or have an existing health condition to enrol. We’re here for everyone who wants to improve their health and wellbeing through meaningful opportunities.

We aim to bring everyone together regardless of background, profession or life experience to learn and share skills while improving wellbeing.

How to enrol and book your placeWe ask you to enrol with the College so we can keep you up to date with our developments and opportunities. You may be asked to complete an enrolment form for Lancashire Recovery College when attending your first course and we’ll also ask for your contact details when you book your place so we can contact you with any changes/ updates.

Some of the partners we work with may also need you to complete their enrolment forms too. This is so we can keep our courses FREE and help you plan your next steps.

About co-productionWe aim to create a service that is co-developed and co-delivered alongside experts by experience (people who have personal experience of a particular health challenge) and experts by profession (people who have professional knowledge in a particular subject area).

We want to bring a different dynamic to the college by empowering people to use their experiences and skills to help others on their recovery journey.

Advisory GroupIf you would like to get involved or have any ideas about how we can collectively improve Lancashire Recovery College you could consider joining your local Advisory Group, which meets monthly.

Advisory Group is open to everyone who has an interest in co-developing the Lancashire Recovery College and you can get involved as much or as little as you like.

We meet monthly in each locality, you can find further details in this prospectus, on our website or by giving the team a call/ email. [email protected]

Volunteering with usVolunteering within the Recovery College can be very rewarding, and will be tailored to your individual interests and skills.

We believe our Volunteers help us to get the college right. We are looking to work alongsidepeoplewhowillbringenthusiasm,skillsandexperiences,flexibility,fresh ideas and new ways of working.

We are particularly interested in receiving applications from people with lived experience and their carers

You don’t need to have volunteered before but our volunteers need to demonstrate empathy, hope and control so we can keep enhancing the opportunities available to our communities.

Volunteering is a chance to meet new like-minded people and gain experience, especially if you are interested in a career in Health, Wellbeing or even Teaching. A regular time commitment is required, because consistency is important to our learners.

All volunteers are DBS checked and will be supported by the recovery team; you will receive continuous supervision and support throughout your time with us.

Lancashire Adult Learning is one of theUK’slargestAdultCommunityLearning providers, reaching over 14,500 learners across Lancashire. We work at the very heart of communities, working to improve their health and wellbeing and to help communities thrive. Our partnership with Recovery College has gone from strength to strength, allowing us to reach people for whom we can offer new learning experiences and give them opportunities to live life well.

Our PartnershipsPartnerships help us to grow our offer and deliver a varied curriculum whilst signposting to support service in your community. We are working alongside a number of Lancashire based teams, organisations and charities to help people navigate and get involved in the many opportunities and experiences in Lancashire.

If you have an opportunity you would like our members to know about, please get in touch. We are always looking to develop links within our communities which could be great spaces to bring people together, workshops & courses, volunteering & employment opportunities and social support including housing, getting active, accessing benefits and improving wellbeing.

Live in the Moment CIC would like to partner with Lancashire Recovery College as the aims of the college closelyreflectthoseofourCIC.Ourmission is to empower people to live fulfilling lives by providing them with skills and tools that lead to improved self-awareness, resilience and positive mental health. We believe that we can provide a valuable resource to the work of the college.

Blackburn with Darwen Adult Learning is committed to providing high quality teaching to local people by helping them to improve their skills and increase their economic prospects. Our service aims to create resilient, cohesive environments where learners can improve their health and wellbeing. We offer a range of courses and workshops suited to our local communities.

Our Courses Explained

The Our Health courses introduce information about mental health conditions. We welcome individuals safely sharing their experiences, but this isn’t a requirement. You may want to learn more about specific conditions or how you can support someone you care for. By attending these courses our members hope to gain a set of skills, tools and knowledge they can use and share between peers and family members to promote a more fulfilled life.

The Wellbeing courses focus on the link between mind, activity and body. These courses will cover areas such as exercise, good nutrition and making healthy lifestyle choices. Our members book on to these courses to improve energy levels, sleep patterns or general quality of life, whilst enjoying the social environment.

Nourish the Soul has courses developed to explore different spiritual techniques which connect individuals to themselves. These introductory coursespromoterelaxationandreflection;learnersoftengoontoaccesssocial groups in the wider community to broaden their practice.

Our Creativity & Culture courses are designed to unearth, explore or rekindle our creative sides. You may like to express your journey through song, dance, art or crafts and you are most welcome to do this with us. Working creatively may help members to express themselves and create pieces that speak to others, supporting one and other on recovery journeys.

Next Steps is designed to connect members to wider opportunities in their communities. We recognise recovery is a journey and not a destination so we detail some of the meaningful opportunities available following your attendance at the Recovery College. Working alongside our many partners we aim to signpost people to community activities to guide them to lead a connected and fulfilled life.

What’s on:

Central LancashireWe are ideally situated at The Harris Museum, Art Gallery & Library in Preston. The Harris has created a beautiful gallery called Space to Relax – The Wellbeing Gallery, which is open to the public every day.

Every Monday Lancashire Recovery College has exclusive use of the Wellbeing Gallery to deliver a workshop each morning and afternoon. We do close the doors to the gallery during course delivery, to provide a safe and confidential space, but we open the doors outside of course times so everyone can enjoy the art and activities on offer.

With fantastic transport links and a number of partners working alongside us, we are able to offer a learning, support and advice hub every Monday. Please feel free to come and visit the team to see if there’s something you would like to engage with.

wellbeing: Self-Compassion

How do you speak to yourself? Do you find yourself being quite negative? Self-compassion is regarding yourself with the same value as you do with the friends and family you admire. This course will look at why we slip in to these negative patterns and how we can be a little kinder to ourselves.

Our Health: Mental Health Awareness

In this course we explore the myths about mental health and look at some of the facts. If you want to improve your understanding of what mental health really is this course will give you a great understanding of how we can all help each other to recognise, support and recover from episodes of poor mental health.

wellbeing: 5 Ways to improve your Mental Wellbeing

Sometimes small changes to our lifestyle and daily routine can have a surprisingly big impact on how we feel. The Five Ways to Wellbeing are proven to help us find ways to cope better with issues such as anxiety, stress and low mood. Our experienced tutors will help you to explore each of the five ways through simple activities which are easy to make part of our daily lives.

Icreativity & culture: Introduction to Photography

Would you like to learn how to make better use of the cameras we all own on our smartphones? Join our friendly partners, Positive Focus, for a two week course that will teach you how to use your camera, take better pictures and share them with others.

creativity & culture: Poetry for Loss

In this workshop, we will be exploring ways to read, write and talk about loss. Come and join a friendly, supportive group of people – you don’t need to have had any experience of creative writing to attend.

We’ll talk about grief and bereavement, but also related losses such as losing independence or a job.

Our Health: Living with Anxiety

Anxiety is a very common form of mental health which can prevent you from reaching your full potential. In this course we will look to understand what anxiety is, why we may experience anxiety and look at some of the strategies we can develop to help reduce episodes.

Our Health: Understanding Autism

This course is for those individuals who wish to increase their understanding and knowledge of Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD). You will learn what is meant by ASD and identify some of the key characteristics as well as some of the challenges those living with autism face.

You will have the opportunity to share ideas and learn strategies for managing some of the specific challenges facing those on the Autistic Spectrum.

Our Health: What is Addiction?

Addiction can present in many forms but the most common we’ll hear about are drugs and alcohol. In this course we will explore what addiction is, why some people suffer with addiction more than others and how we can support those with addictions to recover.

Many people enjoy the creative process of photography. Our partners, Positive Focus, will guide you through location photography out on the streets of Preston. nourishing the soul: Tree of Life

The Tree of Life is a creative course that’s allows you to look at your life experiences, things that are important to you and how you look at yourself.

We’ll discuss what a Tree of Life visual could be used for and start to create our own personal designs. You’ll be encouraged to take your Tree of Life home with you and to keep adding to the design throughout your personal wellbeing journey.

wellbeing: Relax & De-Stress

Exploring relaxation can help you look after yourself when you’re feeling stressed or worried, we could all learn more about how to bring ease and calm into our hectic lives.

This course is designed to show you things you can try which will help you to unwind and reinvigorate at the end of a long day.

nourishing the soul: Nature to nurture

An increase in digital technology and communication is making it harder to find time to focus, and could be adding totheincreasingnumberofpeopleintheUKstrugglingwiththeirwellbeing.

Lancashire Wildlife Trust have created ‘Nature to Nurture’ delivered by the Ecotherapy Team – Myplace which will introduce you to a local nature reserve and offer you an opportunity to try your hand at bush craft, building fires and wildlife spotting.

nourishing the soul: Mindcalm

In a busy and hectic world, we could all benefit from slowing down and creating some space, peace and calm.

This short course will be a fantastic start in your search for calm. You will be introduced to a variety of simple techniques to help you relax your mind and discover first-hand the peaceful presence of your own being, experience the power of the present moment and be amazed at how still your mind can be.

creativity & culture: Movement for Wellbeing

During this 4 week course you will experience the benefits of becoming more aware of your body; the capacity it has to help us feel, think and move in a way that is positive, encouraging, expressive and calming.

No prior experience is necessary; the workshops will be inclusive and can be responsive to any specific needs within the group. Our hope is together we will become more aware, creative and mobile.

creativity & culture: Doodling for Wellbeing

Zentangling is a method of drawing where patterns fill defined spaces to form beautiful designs. They are deceptively simple to create, anyone can do it.

With hundreds of patterns to try and endless possibilities to create a wonderful piece of artwork. We’re sure this workshop will help you to relax and bring out the artist in you. Beginners most welcome!

Our Health: Living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Our facilitator is living with CFS after being diagnosed in 1995 and subsequently medically retired.

In this workshop we will cover views of CFS through lived experience, discuss what CFS is and hopefully introduce some coping strategies to live well with chronic fatigue syndrome.

creativity & culture: Mindful Mandala Art

Engaging in mandala art can be a highly enriching personal experience in which you are able to bring yourself fully in to the present moment whilst creating beautiful, personal pieces of art. Mandala art has been known to promote relaxation, calm the nervous system, invoke positive

energies, and balance body energies. This short course will combine Mindfulness with Mandala Art to allow you to experience the benefits it can bring for yourself.

What’s on:

Blackpool & FyldeWe’ve been piloting our offer in Blackpool since September 2019 and we’re pleased to continue our partnership with the Claremont Park Community Centre this term.

We’ve listened to communities outside of Blackpool and will be piloting deliveries in Lytham and Poutlon-le-Fylde while we try to find a partner to work with to give the College a home.

We hope to continue to engage with communities and partners across Blackpool, Fylde & Wyre whilst developing new courses and scoping more venues, so everyone can find something local and accessible to them. We need your help with this so please get in touch if you think you may be able to help.

wellbeing: Survivor’s Circle

Survivor’s Circle is a Peer led support group for survivors of sexual abuse and rape. Our group provides a safe and confidential space for people to chat informally and get access to specialist support and services. The group will meet fortnightly.

We respectfully ask that you contact Claire Stephenson (Group lead) via email at [email protected] before accessing the group, so we can make sure everyone is welcomed properly.

An increase in digital technology and communication is making it harder to find time to focus, and could be adding totheincreasingnumberofpeopleintheUKstrugglingwiththeir wellbeing.

Lancashire Wildlife Trust have created ‘Nature to Nurture’ delivered by the Ecotherapy Team - Myplace which will introduce you to a local nature reserve and offer you an opportunity to try your hand at bush craft, building fires and wildlife spotting.

Our Health: Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP)

This course is delivered in a relaxed atmosphere and often people learn from each other and share their experiences of trying different things, giving you insight into what options are available and how they work.

In partnership with Blackpool Adult and Family Learning we recognise the housing issues across Blackpool. Together we will look at your rights and responsibilities as a tenant, while considering budgeting and affordability options.

The training is designed to help you with your housing options and to consider sustainability of accommodation. This is a two week course and you must complete both weeks to gain your Tenancy Certificate.

Research over the last 30 years has found that writing helps calm the mind and emotions, and increases feelings of happiness and wellbeing. Therapeutic Writing uses guided writing activities to increase and strengthen personal development, providing you with a valuable tool which you can take away with you to use throughout your life.

In this workshop, you will have the opportunity to take part in activities designed to help release the words within you in a positive and creative way. These enjoyable activities will help you learn to increases self-awareness, develop clarity, insight and inspiration, and elevate your mood.

No previous writing experience is needed. Anyone can do it. All levels of learners are able to participate.

The workshop provides guidance and support to promote writing for wellbeing, connection and enjoyment. You will have the opportunity to share your experiences, but you will not be asked to share or read aloud unless you wish the choice is always yours.

Opportunities for allcommunity workshops: Let’s Grow Preston

Let’s Grow Preston is a community based environmental charity that runs two community gardens and also supports a network of all of the other community green space and growing projects within the PR postcode. Our aim is to create a network of welcoming and inclusive green spaces where anyone and everyone can get involved in some outdoor horticultural activity and enjoy the health and wellbeing benefits that this can bring.

Whether you want to spend some more time outside, get more active, meet new people, help to care for the environment or all of the above, contact us and we can connect you with the right opportunity for you.

Stubbylee Community Greenhouses provides a safe space to recoup, recover and thrive. Every year we deliver around 12,000 wellbeing interventions through our main site and recovery college and around 38,000 through our entire project. Our range of activity is vast from horticulture and allied trades to blacksmithing and artwork. HARRIWe understand how difficult it can be to navigate the NHS and the services it offers, as well as those from our many partners across Lancashire. HARRI is a vehicle that tours across Lancashire to highlight the services and support available in your community.

HARRI has our recovery team on board but also hosts a variety of our partners who are able to offer on the day advice and support, as well as signposting so you get the information you need, simply by jumping on board!

You can also sign up to become a Recovery College member and book on to your preferred course right then and there.
