The NIA aims to:

• Help create the conditions and cultural change necessary for proven innovations to be adopted faster and more systematically in the NHS

• Deliver innovation into practice for demonstrable patient and population benefit

• Learn from Fellows’ experiences so that others benefit from knowledge generated

1. Overview

Who is the NIA?

• The NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA) is an NHS England Initiative delivered in partnership with the Country’s 15 Academic Health Science Networks (AHSNs)

• The NIA is hosted by UCLPartners

• All 15 AHSNs contribute financially to the NIA. This provides bursaries to Fellows and supports programme delivery.

What should you expect after 12 months?

1. Overview

At the end of the initial 12 months, each Fellow should have the following in place:

• Robust diffusion plan: A critically appraised, robust diffusion plan for the NHS, which they have made progress on implementing (e.g. new contracts signed, resources secured, etc.).

• Expanded networks: Built a network of decision makers, ‘critical friends’ and other key stakeholders.

• Navigation of innovation opportunities: The ability to navigate innovation initiatives, support infrastructure and national levers.

• Expanded knowledge: Addressed critical knowledge gaps as agreed with their mentors/lead AHSN/NIA core team at the programme outset.

In 2017, up to 12 Fellows will be recruited to join the NIA

• This year the NIA is only open to innovations that address one or more of the following challenges:

Mental Health Urgent and Emergency CarePrimary Care

• The details for these challenges can be viewed on the website• Please read them before applying • To apply, you will need to select which challenge your innovation addresses

1. Overview

Criteria: what we are looking for?

1. Applicant: A set of strong values and a passion for learning and sharing insights for the benefits of entrepreneurs and the wider care system, and who can commit two days per week

2. Innovation: Addresses at least one of the NIA 2017 challenges, has an evidence-base showing delivery of better patient outcomes and reduced cost, and is sufficiently mature to be ready to scale across the NHS (including satisfying all necessary regulatory, intellectual property and ethical frameworks)

3. Scaling plan: A convincing, ambitious plan for how you will scale your innovation for patient benefit

Fellows can be from any background:

Your employing or host organisation needs to be established and beyond start up, but also requiring support through the NIA to expand within the NHS.

Once registered, you will need to choose the right ‘Group’

You will need to provide the name of your innovation.

This is what we will use to identify your application form.

Here you will see the 4 sections of the application process:

(where relevant)4. Authorising signature

You can click into each section to begin.

You will have the option of saving and reviewing each section before submitting.

With the exception of the supporting information section, you will not be able to submit an application until all relevant sections have been completed.

You can either save or continue to the next section at the bottom of the page.

The application system will not let you continue to the next section until the current section is complete.

Each question has a word limit.

The word limit will be displayed below the text box.

You will not be able to exceed the maximum word count.

If cutting and pasting answers, please do check you are within the word limit so that nothing is lost.

The Guide for Applicants also contains the word count for each question.

Once you have completed a section, you will return to the main page to complete the next section.

Once the three required sections have been completed you will be able to submit your application.

Once submitted, you will be unable to review and edit it.

Applicants are asked to submit a one minute elevator pitch as to why them and why their innovation should join the NIA

Guidance as to how to do this can be found on the Guide for Applicants.

For security reasons, it is advised this is uploaded through YouTube although the system will also accept Vimeo.
