At nearly the same time (actually one week before) but in another city, my teacher, our former Senior Rabbi, Harvey J. Fields, will retire from the active rabbinate. After 40 years of service to the Jewish people Harvey will leave his daily duties and responsibilities to the Wilshire Boulevard Temple of Los Angeles, and devote his attention to writing and to family. Nearly thirty years ago I came here to Anshe Emeth because I wanted to learn from Harvey Fields. And learn I did. He was a gifted and devoted mentor and every day I learned so .much from him. I cherish the years that we worked together here in New Brunswick and I will always be grateful to him for all that he gave to me and the way in which he helped to shape my own rabbinate. Between Us ... Todah Rabbah!

In just a few weeks two individuals who have been important in the life of our congregation will retire from active service. Of course, there will be a retirement event and the moment will be celebrated with all kinds of words of appreciation for all that they have done. And so it should be.

I want to make special note of their retirement here in our Temple Bulletin. After 30 years of service to our congregation, Shoshana Parse lIs, our master Hebrew teacher, has decided to bring her service to a close. How many of our students (children and adults) have been touched by Shoshana's special spirit and enthusiasm for life, for Hebrew, for the Jewish people? How many b 'nai mitzvah students has she prepared for us over the course of the years.

I still remember the day I fITst met Shoshana. It was July 1974. She came into my office (which was then in the Religious School) and she sat down to meet me. She told me who she was, what she does, how she teaches, who are the students she likes to work with ... and then she left. I don't think I got one word in. At that moment I knew that we had a power house of a teacher on our staff. But I didn't know how much of a powerhouse until after I watched her teach.

Shoshana fills the room. She keeps the class in motion and gets the students involved, loving every minute of the hour with her. Shoshana's enthusiasm has always been infectious. She makes her students laugh, sing, shout, rejoice .. . and love the Hebrew language. She has been for us a very special and rare gift. On Sunday, June 8 at the Temple, we will celebrate all that Shoshana has given to us when she receives our coveted Crown of Torah award, and when she also receives our deep appreciation and thanks.

Between 45 ... cont. And the years that Harvey was here were also

exciting and important ones. Together with devoted lay leaders he helped transfonn our congregation and set it in new directions. He led us in liturgical change and encouraged us to expand the notion of our congregational vision. Nearly every day I feel Harvey's influence upon me and upon what our congregation has become today. In fact, Harvey's presence is felt in almost every congregation in the Refonn Movement and in almost every Torah Study class in Refonn synagogues throughout America.

To Rabbi Fields and to Shoshana Parsells we say Todah Rabbah! Thank you for all that you have given us. Thank you for all of your years of devoted teaching and caring and kindness . Thank you for what you have given to the Jewish people. In the years ahead may you go from strength to strength, enjoying every day and knowing that so many are truly grateful for your guiding hands and generous spirits. Thank you for the splendid encouragement to all of us who have been and continue to be your devoted

students. 11-.411J/£

L 'Tikkun O/am Make a Difference in the Life of a Child

This new monthly column will be reporting on Anshe Emeth's on-going Social Action programs and partnerships. One of our initiatives, the recipient ofthe 1999 Irving Fain Social Action Award, is our mentoring project with our across the street neighbors at the Redshaw School. For the past five years, temple congregants have gone to the school, some to work one-on-one with students, some to support classroom teachers - all to make a difference.

Our neighborhood schools face many challenges; the students have many needs. Over the years Anshe Emeth has shown its support by providing library books, much-needed school supplies and most importantly, our volunteer time and effort. Redshaw Elementary always has students in need of academic supportall ages, all subject matter. If you've got the inclination, we'll set you up with a student. Meetings with students take place primarily during daytime hours and placements are coordinated between our volunteer coordinator and Redshaw professional staff. Can you make a difference in the life of a child? Call Marilyn Goldsmith at (732)238-7748 for more information or to jump on board as we start to plan for the next academic year.

WE WANT YOU .•.

... To bring your friends and family to Shabbat Services in June. Rabbi Miller will be available to answer questions after Services on June 20th
