Dear Friends,

I’m sure that you will agree that we live in

very uncertain times. As we look around at

the events taking place in our world, it is

not very surprising that we find it almost

impossible to make any sense of what we

see happening. However, as we celebrate

Easter we do so in the knowledge that Jesus

came into the world to bring love, hope and

peace; and it was for that that he died, and

rose again from the dead.

“Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will

come again.” The congregation uses these

words from the Great Thanksgiving during

Holy Communion in our churches. At

Easter, these words ring especially true. It is

mystery. It defies all logic and rational

thought. It demands faith rather than

reason. The empty tomb occasions both

shouts of victory and mute terror and awe –

if we are honest about it.

What does this really mean that Jesus was

raised from death and the women

encountered an empty tomb? How does

one deal with the reality that God

conquered death once and for all, went

walking around and offering proof to his

disciples, and then left for places unknown?

The response of the women is not that far-

fetched when you stop to think about it.

Whenever we cannot explain what we

experience, emotions take the lead in

guiding our actions and reactions. Terror

would be a natural response to the

unexpected, especially where a dead loved

one is concerned. Amazement would

certainly be realistic when the terror of the

moment gives way to a hint of hope. Could

it really be true? Could the prophecies

have been fulfilled? What is the only thing

worse than seeing a ghost? Perhaps it

would be seeing nothing but an empty

grave with a serene messenger and no

logical explanation. What would your

response have been?

Life simply is not neat and tidy. Every age

and each generation faces challenges that

are simultaneously similar and unique to

that generation. We may say, for example,

that the events surrounding recent events

in Syria and Iraq were the epitome of evil,

but other generations would cite the

Crusades or one of the two World Wars or

the Inquisition. Thin lines of heart, soul,

and mind separate horror and hope,

unbelief and faith, joy and pain.

For these reasons, I find the Gospel of

Mark’s account of the resurrection, with its

“cliff-hanger” ending, to be a story that is

most appropriate for our present age. Of

course, the account of Jesus’ death on the

cross and his subsequent resurrection is

not simply some tale told once a year; it is

the very heart of our faith, the cornerstone

of our discipleship journey. We are

resurrection people, God-bearers who

spread hope and love, infused with divine

Paul

God’s love for all creation and the divine

imperative to redeem it is not over yet,

and we are part of that great narrative.

Yes, this is a real story for uncertain times

– indeed for all time.

May holy sadness and amazement give

way to hope and joy as you share the story

once more.

May the joy of Easter fill your hearts now

and always,

grace. Story is the method by which we

communicate this truth, and the true

beauty of Mark’s account is that the

women pass the story to us like a baton in

a relay race. It is our lap, our time to be

seized by the Spirit.

We may find ourselves filled with

amazement, terror, doubt, or disbelief and

quite unable to share this good news.

Thankfully, we know from other accounts

and additions to the story that they did

recover and went on to witness to a world

in need. Moreover, so can we! The story of

A full packed and varied programme of all

things Scottish greeted the revellers

paying homage to Scotland's finest poet.

With most participants vaunting some

form of tartan, the evening commenced

with Nigel and two kilted hairy

legged Scotsmen, Grant and Steve

parading the Haggis round the room to

enthusiastic applause. Nigel in thick faux

Scottish accent, incoherent at times with

Scottish fervour, gave the Address to the

Haggis, "warm -reekin, rich!" Following a

toast to the Immortal Memory, our poet in

residence, Suzanne as only an English rose

can, sweetly recited "To a Louse." More

speechifying ensued from Paul and

Rosey, a quiz on all things Scottish

concentrating the minds. The Simon

Benn Big Sound performed "500 Miles" to

a standing ovation, as bad they were this

night as they were the previous year with

"Donald where's ya troosas!" A hearty

Auld Lang Syne rounded off the evening

and after much downing of many a wee

dram, we repaired to bed in the wee small

hours! A big thank you to Jane, Rachel,

two Sue's and all those who contributed

to the puddings, for

providing a magnificent Bill o'Fayre.

VALENTINES DINNER DANCE 13TH FEB

"Lurve" was definitely in the air that night

as a full house celebrated once again , All

You Need Is Love, Love, It Conquers

Everything, Love Is All Around Us. So

palpable was the romance in the room

that you could feel it in your fingers, feel it

in your toes ,as lyrically portrayed by

some pop group, all those years ago. A

splendid 3 course meal, again deliciously

prepared by our Ladies, mentioned above,

was serenaded to by the very popular

Now and Then band, back again this year

by popular request. After the dinner, a

quiz based on 100 catch phrases caused

some mirth, with no particular

winners. Then back to the band as we

rocked and bopped the night away. To the

rousing singing of "Delilah "we finished

with "Show me the way to Amarillo," then

shown the door, returning home happily

reminded that the age of romance, love

and laughter is still very much alive in

Hunsingore.

FUTURE EVENT

Saturday April 25th Hunsingore Village

Hall "Shakespeare Supper Night" This is a

new event to celebrate the life of our

Bard, William Shakespeare, akin to a

Burns Night Supper but paying homage to

Bill. Usual format, a 3 course dinner, some

speechifying, a little poetry and quiz, well

worth coming to a very entertaining

evening.£20 per ticket to include dinner,

bring your own drinks, contact Nigel

01423 358516 or Paul 01423 358640.

Maureen Long R.I.P.

(The following “eulogy” was written by Steve Long – Mau-

reen’s son – and appeared on the back page of the Order

of Service at Maureen’s funeral. Maureen had left instruc-

tions for her funeral service, including the explicit directive

that there was to be ‘no eulogy’ at the her service)

Maureen was born in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the only child

of Peter Lacey and Irene Gibson, and grew up in Ashington, close to the Northumberland

coast. At school she was both academic and sporty and she also played violin in the orches-

tra. After leaving grammar school she went to train as a teacher in Oxford and then worked

at a secondary school in Reading.

In 1966 she joined V.S.O. (Voluntary Service Overseas) and went to teach English in Zambia.

Here she met and married Peter Long, who remembers Maureen would spend her holidays

helping at a local orphanage. Their first child, Steve, was born in 1968 in a local mission hos-

pital. After returning to England Maureen gave up teaching to be a full time mum and in

1971 they had a daughter, Karin.

Peter’s job as a specialist in tropical agriculture then took the whole family all over the

world and Maureen lived in many countries, including Thailand, Iraq, India, Malaysia, Paki-

stan, Sudan, Sierra Leone and Barbados. When Peter retired in 1994 they both volunteered

with V.S.O. and went back to Africa, this time to Namibia, to teach in a college for almost

three years. Maureen loved to travel and worked out recently that she had visited 43 coun-

tries.

Back in England, living in Hunsingore and with her children now adults, Maureen went back

to work and taught at Thorpe Arch Prison for several years. She also worked as a tour guide

for almost 20 years at Ripley castle, a job for which her incredible memory and her ability to

talk, were perfectly suited.

In 2002 Karin, Maureen’s daughter, died after a short battle with cancer but throughout

this difficult time she was a huge source of strength for the whole family.

In 2003, 2006 and 2012 Maureen’s three Grandchildren, Thomas, Molly and Eliza, were

born and she clearly loved and excelled in her new role as Grannie.

Maureen’s faith was very important to her throughout her life and, in all the countries she

lived, would immediately throw herself into whatever the local church, or other organisa-

tions, were doing. This continued in Hunsingore where she is well known as, among other

things, the local Christian Aid representative and correspondent for the parish magazine.

She was very straightforward, opinionated, determined and practical in her approach to

everything, but was utterly unselfish in offering help to anyone who needed it. If something

needed doing, or someone needed help, Maureen would just do it efficiently and without

fuss.

Prayer is at the heart of the Christian faith, there is no right or wrong way to pray but

Jesus did give us a “pattern” of prayer which we know as the ” Lord’s prayer”.

Come and join us on this Sunday as we discover how the words of this ancient prayer

are still relevant for us today, and pray together for one another, for the needs of our

family and friends, for the village and for the world.

Primary School

As you will have seen from the last

Niddside News, Kirk Hammerton School

is a very busy place! It also has the

distinction of being a Church of England

primary school, where staff, parents and

carers, and governors work hard to

develop existing links with St. John the

Baptist Church, and the wider village

community.

One recent development in the school's

life has been the Reconstitution of the

Governing Body. This was made

necessary, firstly, in order to register the

change of name of the Diocese, and ,

secondly, to fulfil the requirements of

certain 2012 Government Regulations.

We now have eight Governors, plus a

temporary Additional Governor, (in a

supportive role), and three vacancies,

one of which is for a local authority

governor. A local authority governor is

one nominated by North Yorkshire

County Council, but appointed by the

school's governing body. Although this

post is open to any suitable volunteer, it

has always proved difficult to find

someone willing to be proposed by

NYCC, and ready to take a full part in the

governance of the school. So, if you feel

you would like a challenge, please think

about putting yourself forward for

consideration for this vacancy!

Another development at Kirk

Hammerton School has been the

creation of a new Visions and Values

Statement. The whole school family has

worked hard to create a Statement that

reflects the Christian ethos of the school

and which sets out the ambitions of us all

for the children at the school. This is the

full Statement:-

'We are a welcoming Church of England

School. We encourage all to achieve

their full potential and provide skills for

the future...

through academic, physical and

spiritual development

through creative and enthusiastic

learning

in a secure place where individuality

is celebrated and confidence

gained

in a positive, healthy, safe and

respectful environment

by encouraging children to embed

life-long skills to become

responsible adults and

members of society.'

Finally, we have a new strap line

'Growing and learning through faith,

inspiration, and fun.' We hope you will

agree that this is a suitable phrase for

our remarkable school!

Head Teacher

Sue Fernyhough

With the days eventually getting

lighter, the children are having more

opportunities to take their learning

outdoors and what a fantastic

environment to learn new skills and

knowledge and experience in the

school’s quest for Education for Life.

Nun Monkton School is a place where

children learn how to think with and

through each other, how to jointly

puzzle over a problem, how to make

sense of conflicting views and how to

arrive at consensus. It is a place where

their world can not only open through

history, geography and literature, but

also through the people they meet and

through their own growing sense of

where they fit in the scheme of things.

This term the whole school has been

having swimming lessons at

Knaresborough pool again. Many

animals are born with the ability to

swim, but humans must learn and

practice before being able to swim

with ease. Therefore we strongly

believe learning to swim is an

important skill to gain at an early age

which is why all our children, from

reception to Year 6 all have lessons,

even if they are already competent

swimmers.

As part of our science learning, we

were visited by some strange and very

large creatures. The children learnt all

about the different habitats, how the

creatures adapt for different seasons

and their place in the food chain.

As part of our celebration of Chinese

New Year, the children took part in an

afternoon workshop and learnt how to

use chop-sticks, make shadow puppets

and We have taken part in a cluster

cultural dance festival. The children

The Real Easter Egg has come third in a national poll to find the UK's favourite

Fairtrade product. Launched in 2010 with the support of hundreds of churches and

schools, it beat leading brands such as Maltesers, Cadbury Dairy Milk and Nestle Kit

Kat to win the coveted title of third most popular UK Fairtrade product. The Real

Easter Egg shared the podium with Divine Sea Salt and Caramel Chocolate bar (1st

place) and Zatoun Olive Oil (2nd

The Meaningful Chocolate Company (MCC) was launched in 2010 and produced the

first Real Easter Egg that year. Out of the 80 million Easter eggs sold in this part of the

world, it is the only Fairtrade charity egg explaining the story of Easter. MCC will sell

their millionth egg in 2015. By the end of the year the company expects to have given

away more than £160,000 to charitable causes.

Dr John Sentamu, the Archbishop of York, said: 'I am delighted that

the significance of The Real Easter Egg has been recognised in this

dead, and the good news of forgiveness and new life in Him. The

Even as Jesus ate that last Passover meal with his disciples, he warned them he was about to

be betrayed. He took the bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to them; he took the cup, gave

thanks, and gave it to them to drink. The Old Covenant, based on Law, was ticking away its

final hours; the New Covenant, based on Christ’s body and his blood, was about to be ushered

in. Jesus prayed in Gethesame that this fearful cup might be removed from him, but even

more, that God’s will might be done. And it was. From Easter onwards we can only approach

God through his Son, Jesus Christ, not on our own merit.

For the next edition we would love

to include a Easter themed picture

or photograph from one of our

young readers. Entries to be sent to

the editor and to be received by

15th May:
