Nightingale House Hospice provides specialist palliative care services, completely free of charge, to people across Wrexham, Flintshire, East Denbighshire, the A494 corridor to Barmouth, and the borders, including Oswestry, Ellesmere, Wem and Whitchurch.

In January 2013, Connie Edwards was diagnosed with cancer. As a patient in Nightingale House's Daycare Unit, she has just completed her first carving — a beautiful, highly decorated wooden spoon, to be presented to her son at his wedding in April.

Connie's experience of Nightingale House has been one of pleasure and surprise.

Following eight weeks in hospital, Connie has been able to attend the Daycare Unit at Nightingale House Hospice.

After initially thinking that Nightingale House was a place for dying, Connie has been surprised by the friendliness of all the staff, the level of care and all the activities that have been made available to her.

In Connie's words, she said "I was initially deeply shocked by my diagnosis. It took time to come to terms with it, but you adjust to life and begin to feel stronger. I've been able to attend classes

Carving Out Memorieson how to breathe, relaxation and mindfulness and it all comes in handy and has been good to do.

"I've been coming in one day per week. It's good. I've been going in the hydrotherapy pool and it's good to meet other patients and we all enjoy sitting down to lunch together.

"It was a great opportunity to be able to take some wood work classes — I've never done anything like it before. I had a lot of help and support from Eileen, who runs the classes."

Eileen helped Connie create a design, that included specific symbols relevant to Connie, her family and her son's marriage. Then, using a variety of chisels of different shapes and sizes, Connie worked on chipping out the intricate design.

Connie said, "I'm so grateful to Eileen for her help — she's such a lovely lady."

It took Connie five weeks to complete her spoon and she will present it to her son on his wedding day.

Welcome to the Spring edition of our newsletter, which we have tried to fill with a balance of patient care news, as well as our fundraising events. We hope you enjoy being updated with what is happening at Nightingale House and, as always, your feedback is welcomed.

As the difficult economic climate continues, we appreciate the impact it is having on you, our supporters, and we really are so appreciative of all the support you’re able to give. We can’t stress enough that every penny counts and we do urge you to continue supporting the Hospice in any way you can.

Like most of you, we are looking forward to some warmer months now. Look out for many of our regular fundraising events and activities that are coming up, such as our Food and Drink Festival, Ladies’ Midnight Walk and Summer Fair. There is something for everyone so please do have a look through our calendar of events.

You may remember, last year we were delighted with the installation of our new Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system — and you may well have

seen the panels when visiting or passing Nightingale House.

The panels were installed in an effort to control our ever increasing energy costs and I’m delighted to report that in the first 12 months they have generated 44,000 kwh of electricity, which saved £5,000 in electricity costs, and generated Feed in Tariff income of £15,000. These savings mean funds can be directed back into clinical services and equate to running either the Hospice for three days, the ambulance for over two years or the Daycare Unit for one month.

We regularly receive many lovely cards, letters and emails reminding us of how valued our services are within the community. This is a great boost for our staff and volunteers, who are all extremely dedicated and hard working. However, there

Spring is in the AirJohn SavageChief Executive Officer

would be no Nightingale House without your continued support to raise the necessary funds so I would like to say a very sincere thank you to you, our supporters, and look forward to seeing you at a fundraising event over the next few months.

A Gift in Your WillMany charities, including Nightingale House Hospice, rely on people to leave gifts in their Wills to enable it to continue its good work. The reality is, without these gifts left by people like you, many of the charities we know and support would not exist today.

At Nightingale House, we take the whole family under our wing from the first meeting and very often the support continues long after a loved one has passed away. Every year, we share the light and dark, joy and sorrow of hundreds of patients and their loved ones. Friends, families and neighbours who are running out of time and making every day count need the care and support of our close-knit, close-by Hospice.

Your gift, whether £500, £5,000 £50,000 or greater, helps us to continue our work and enables future patients to experience the high standard and range of care we currently offer. Your gift will help ensure Nightingale House Hospice is still here for future generations supporting your community.

We understand your priority is for those people closest to you, but ask you to consider leaving a nominal gift for Nightingale House in your Will. Whatever the amount, it will make a difference and will be treasured by hundreds of families in the future.

If you would like further information about making a gift to Nightingale House in your Will please contact Caroline Siddall.

For 2013, it will cost £2.6 million for us to continue to provide our services to our patients and their families. Of this we need to raise £2.2 million through our fundraising activities.

Fundraising Goals

If you are thinking of raising funds or planning an event to support Nightingale House, you could consider setting yourself the challenge of funding a specific project, such as,

U £12.50 pays for a patient's meals for a day. U £36 enables a child or family member to receive bereavement support sessions over a year. U £120 allows 15 patients to spend the day in the Nightingale House Day Care Unit. U £115 covers the cost of one of our nursing staff for a day.

Most important, please remember as you fundraise for Nightingale House, every penny counts and every donation made makes a difference to patients and their families in your local community.

Targedau Codi Arian

Os ydych yn meddwl am godi arian neu yn trefnu digwyddiad i gefnogi Ty'r Eos gallwch ystyried gosod sialens o gefnogi prosiectau neilltuol fel y rhain,

U £12.50 yn talu am brydiau bwyd claf am ddiwrnod. U £36 yn cefnogi plentyn neu aelod o'r teulu i dderbyn sesiynau cefnogaeth yn dilyn profedigaeth yn ystod blwyddyn. U £120 yn caniatau i 15 o'n cleifion i aros am ddiwrnod yn Uned Gofal Dydd Ty'r Eos. U £115 yn cyflogi un o'n staff nyrsio am ddiwrnod.

Yn bwysicaf oll, cofiwch tra byddwch yn codi arian ar gyfer Ty'r Eos bod pob ceiniog yn cyfrif a phob cyfraniad yn gwneud gwahaniaeth i gleifion a'u teuluoedd yn eich cymuned leol.

Patients and families at the centre of our services have always been core principles across all departments and as such there is always a need to review our services and facilities to make sure they meet the needs of the patients attending the Hospice.

One example of this has been the drive to modernise our hairdressing salon to better meet the needs of patients with more complex needs and who perhaps have difficulty using the more traditional style of hairdressers sinks.

Meeting the Needs of our PatientsTracy LivingstoneDirector of Nursing and Patient Services

With the support of a fabulous donation of £1,600 from the Mold Sugar Craft Group this became an achievable goal for the Hospice, when one of our existing traditional ‘back-wash’ hairdressing sinks was removed from the salon to make way for a more ‘ergonomically designed’ rise and fall sink. This makes hairdressing services accessible to our patients with back and neck problems which may mean a traditional sink is unsuitable for their needs.

The simple thing of being able to get your hair washed and set or cut by one of our volunteer hairdressers can make a real difference to our

patients in terms of a feeling of general well-being and also self esteem. This is a project we would not have been able to prioritise without the support of the ladies of the Mold Sugar Craft Group and I thank them for their support.

We are fortunate that our salon is staffed by volunteer hairdressers who give their time freely. We rely so much on your continued support of Nightingale House to fund vital services, such as this, for patients and families.

Thank you for your ongoing interest in our news and your support.

VolunteersWe are ever thankful for our army of willing volunteers who work in every area of Nightingale House, including our wards, daycare, reception, kitchen, administrative support, working in our charity shops, tending our beautiful gardens and helping with our vast number of fundraising events and activities. The support our volunteers offer is absolutely vital to the level of care Nightingale House is able to provide and we are very grateful for the continued support. With summer approaching, the gardens at Nightingale House are again beginning to look colourful and vibrant and this is down to the fantastic efforts of our dedicated Volunteer Gardening Team — Allan, Joan and Margaret. Allan, Joan and Margaret have come together through volunteering at Nightingale House and have combined their expertise to really enhance the patient and visitor experience. There are opportunities for other keen gardeners to join them. Can you spare a few hours each week to help tend our gardens and mow our lawns? Our Young Person’s Volunteer Programme is very popular. We are able to offer young people, over the age of 16, the opportunity to volunteer within Nightingale House, giving them an opportunity to work within a healthcare

environment, adding strength to their CV’s and university applications, as well as developing other core skills. We always need new volunteers to work within the Hospice, our shops and at fundraising events. Roles are varied and experience is not necessary as we train all new volunteers. Please get in touch if you are able to give the gift of time.

Your Hospice Needs You!

Are you naturally outgoing, a people person with some time to spare?

Then you may be able to help the Hospice in a new venture — we are trying to recruit a new band of volunteers who have had personal experience of the services we deliver for patients and their families at Nightingale House, to be trained as ‘Hospice Ambassadors’.

What is a ‘Hospice Ambassador’?

The hospice ambassador is an individual who is able to give some time, often in the evenings, to meet with supporters and fundraising groups and is able to stand up and say thank you on behalf of the Hospice for donations or support we receive.

The role requires insight gained through personal experience of the service, but also comes with full training in presentation skills and a pre-developed presentation package so that you are fully prepared in your new role.

In addition, the role will develop at a pace based on your confidence, with opportunities to shadow an existing speaker before joining in to co-present and finally flying solo, initially supported by your mentor to trouble shoot or answer questions as required.

U Do you feel passionate about your experience of hospice care? U Do you believe that others should be better informed about our work and the impact we have on the lives of patients and their families?

U Do you want to know more about this opportunity? If you answer yes to these three questions and have some time to share for the benefit of others then please contact Tracy Livingstone at the Hospice.

Mae eich hosbis angen CHI!

Ydych chi'n berson sy'n naturiol rhadlon, person pobl sydd ag amser ar eich dwylo?

Yna, hwyrach y medrwch helpu'r hosbis mewn menter newydd — rydym yn ceisio apwyntio math newydd o wirfoddolwyr sydd a phrofiad bersonol o'r gwasanaethau rydym yn cyflwyno i'r cleifion a'u teuluoedd yn yr hosbis a'u hyfforddi yn 'Llysgenhadon yr Hosbis'.

Beth ydi 'Llysgennad Hosbis'?

Mae'n unigolyn sy'n medru rhoi amser yn aml yn yr hwyr i gyfarfod cefnogwyr a grwpiau codi arian ac yn abl i ddeud diolch yn gyhoeddus ar ran yr hosbis am unrhyw roddion neu gefnogaeth rydym wedi ei dderbyn.

Mae'r swydd angen dirnadaeth drwy brofiad bersonol o'r gwasanaeth, ond hefyd daw gydag hyfforddiant llawn mewn sgiliau cyflwyno ynghyd a phecyn cyflwyniad wedi ei flaengynllunio i'ch paratoi ar gyfer y swydd newydd.

Yn ychwanegol bydd y swydd yn datblygu yn unol a'ch hyder yn y swydd gyda chyfleoedd i gysgodi siaradwr profiadol cyn ymuno mewn cyd-gyflwyniad ac yna'n cyflwyno ar ben eich hunan, ar y dechrau gyda chymorth mentor i ddatrys problemau neu ateb cwestiynau fel bo'r angen.

U Ydych chi'n teimlo'n angerddol dros eich profiad o ofal mewn hosbis? U Ydych chi'n meddwl dylai eraill fod yn fwy ymwybodol o'n gwaith a'i effaith ar gleifion a'u teuluoedd?

U Ydych chi eisio gwybod mwy am y cyfle hwn?Os atebwch 'Ydw' teirgwaith gydag amser i'w rannu er budd eraill yna cysylltwch efo Tracy Livingstone yn yr hosbis.

Congratulations to everybody who took part in the Zumbathon on Friday 22 February 2013, raising in excess of £4,800 for Nightingale House. The event was well supported by many Zumba groups in the area with particular thanks to Beckie Lawson and her company ‘Zumba with Beckie’.

Despite a bleak and miserable day, the Nightingale House Trevor Rocks Abseil was also a big success raising in excess of £3,000. Congratulations to the 24 brave participants who took part.

The Great Wrexham Road Runner took place on Sunday 7 April 2013 and saw 400 runners taking part on the day. The closed road 10km course started and finished at Queensway Athletics track where the atmosphere was fantastic, and supporters lined the majority of the route to cheer runners as they came in to finish the race.

We are thrilled to announce that the event has pledged to raise more than £10,000 for the Hospice and have high hopes of building upon this event for the future.

Congratulations to everybody who took part, particularly to our race winners Daniel Weston, Andrew Edwards & Gary Norgrove who came 1st, 2nd & 3rd in the male category and Sarah Kearney, Isabel Redfern & Emma Collins in the female category.

The event was made possible by all of the volunteers who helped on the day. We would also like to give thanks to The Highways and Emergency planning departments of WCBC, and in particular Geraint Jones, Amberon Traffic Management, JT & M Signs, North Wales Police, the staff at Queensway Stadium, Wrexham Athletics Club and in particular David Williams (Chair) who gave commentary throughout the day.
