Which parameters are important for eye banks in 2020 to obtain 20/20?

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the entire team of the Netherlands Institute for Innovative Ocular Surgery (NIIOS) and Amnitrans EyeBank Rotterdam, it is our pleasure to send you a first announcement of the XXIV Annual Meeting of the European Eye Bank Association, to be held at the World Trade Centre in Rotterdam, on Friday January 20 and Saturday January 21, 2012.

The main focus of the 2012 EEBA Meeting will lay on all aspects of lamellar keratoplasty, ranging from techniques for surgical pre-dissection of corneal donor tissue to clinical outcomes. The paper and poster sessions, as well as hands-on-skill wet labs, are organized for all eye bank directors, eye bank technicians as well as clinicians, who want to get familiar with advanced lamellar keratoplasty techniques:

• Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK)

• Descemet stripping (automated) endothelial keratoplasty

(DSEK/DSAEK)

• Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK)

With the 2012 EEBA meeting, we would also like to make an attempt to close the gap between eye bank professionals and corneal surgeons. For example by opening the discussion on dogmas portraited in the eye bank world by their relevance to the clinical practice. Do we need HLA-matching if we can perform anterior lamellar keratoplasty in high risk cases? Do we need endothelial cell counts if there is limited proof of its correlation with corneal graft survival? How do we weigh cell counts relative to a ‘surgical match’, that may more closely relate to clinical outcome in advanced lamellar keratoplasty techniques? What holds the future for penetrating grafts and how are the lamellar techniques going to affect eye banking?

Just the other way around, clinicians may want to better educate themselves on eye banking, to improve their clinical results, in particular with endothelial keratoplasty. A better understanding of tissue behaviour and handling, as well as preservation methods, may translate in fewer complications and better visual outcomes.

We therefore would like to challenge you to use the 2012 EEBA meeting to share your thoughts on “what parameters are important for eye banks in 2020 to obtain 20/20”.

We hope to see you in Rotterdam next year!

Jacqueline van der Wees Gerrit Melles

Schiphol International Airport Amsterdam connects with a direct train (platform 5/6) to Rotterdam Central Station. Returning: Platform varies at Rotterdam Central Station to Schiphol.

From Rotterdam The Hague Airport, take bus 33 or a taxi to the World Trade Centre or your hotel.

The World Trade Centre in Rotterdam is at walking distance from Rotterdam Central Station and the hotels displayed, or take a tram or the metro to “Beurs”.

The full address of the World Trade Centre for navigation purposes:

Parking “WTC-V&D”, Leeuwenstraat 2, 3011 AL Rotterdam. The entrance of the parking garage is open Monday

thru Friday from 06.30 am till 2.00 am, and on Saturdays from 7.30 am till 2.00 am. Departure 24 hrs per day. Maximum fee € 26 per day.

The need for further improvement of ophthalmic surgical techniques, may be illustrated by the observation that not only patients, but even animals demonstrate visual impairment. The dog below is roaming the streets of European cities begging for money. Given the flow of donations, his business model appears quite effective, and certainly less laborious than running an eye bank.
