Often, achieving great results means getting the right exposure and colortemperature readings. When white balance is precise, coloration appears moreaccurate, while correct exposure enhances the richness of the image’s colors.Nikon’s 3D Digital Matrix Image Control can give you both — automatically. Itfeatures an advanced image-processing algorithm that ensures extremely faithfulcolor reproduction with exceptionally smooth gradations.

Exposure Metering Modes ◆ The D100 offers three exposure metering

modes: Nikon’s highly regarded 10-seg-ment 3D Matrix Metering mode for intelli-gent image analysis, Center WeightedMetering and Spot Metering.

TTL White Balance ◆ The D100 offers several options for white

balance control:

—In Auto mode, the camera analyzes thelight through the lens, automaticallyachieving white balance that producesnatural-looking images.

—Manual mode provides six settings(incandescent, florescent, direct sunlight, flash cloudy and shade) with fine tuning(-3 to +3 settings with the lower numberbeing warmer, the higher being cooler) tomatch the light source.

—In Preset mode, you use a grey or whitecard as a reference to get the most accu-rate white balance setting—ideal whenshooting under mixed-light conditions.

—White balance bracketing shoots withthree different white balance settings(reddish, selected value, and bluish).

Exposure Control ◆ The camera offers four exposure modes:

Auto-Multi Program, Shutter andAperture Priority, and Manual with shut-ter speeds from 1/4000 to 30 seconds.

◆ In Program mode, you can select differentcombinations of aperture and shutterspeed settings from those automaticallyselected. This gives you more controlwhile still letting the camera do most ofthe work for you. When in manual mode,an electronic exposure display in theviewfinder shows the amount an imagewill be under- or overexposed.

◆ In all exposure modes, the D100’s NoiseReduction function can be automaticallyactivated at slower shutter speeds toovercome background noise buildup.

◆ Exposure compensation of ±5 EV is avail-able in 1/3 or 1/2 EV increments and AutoExposure Bracketing (three consecutiveshots with varying exposures) let you seethe effects of varying brightness.

◆ ISO Auto Control mode automaticallyadjusts sensitivity (from ISO equivalent200 to 6400) when optimal exposure can-not be achieved in any exposure mode.

Three Color Modes◆ To suit a range of applications, the D100

employs three color modes:

—Mode I is sRGB-optimized and sets hueand chroma values that are especiallyeffective for rendering the natural-look-ing skin tones required in portraits.

—Mode II is Adobe RGB-optimized anddelivers a wider color reproductionrange than the other modes. The high-quality final output it provides is idealfor the wider color gamut required forstudio commercial photography.

—Like Mode I, Mode III is sRGB-optimized,but sets hue and chroma values forlandscape and nature photography.

NEF (Nikon Electronic File)RAW Data Format

◆ Change the attributes of a NEF file’s RAWimage data, including exposure (±2EV),Tone Compensation, Sharpening, HueAdjustment and Saturation

– Image Sharpen: adjust in-camera sharp-ening (Auto, Normal, Low, High, or of)

– Tone Compensation: adjusts the overalltone and contrast of the image. Choicesare Auto, Normal, Low Contrast, HighContrast, and Custom (lets you down-load a tone curve from a computer).

– Hue Adjustment: Controls the overallhue of the image. Adjustment valuesrange from +9 to -9 degrees, in +/-3-stepincrements.

High Performance◆ The D100 is more than just compact, it’s

also quick. Shutter release time lag,start-up time, autofocus and image pro-cessing are all very fast.

◆ In Continuous Shooting mode, the D100can capture up to nine consecutive (sixin TIFF or 4 in RAW formats) at 2.5 fps.

◆ Self-timer provides a short delaybetween shutter release and exposurewith intervals from 2 to 20 seconds.

◆ Anti-vibration mode, crucial in special-ized applications such as photomicrog-raphy, effects a delay between theinstant of shutter release and imagecapture, preventing mirror shock.

3D Digital Matrix Image ControlIncorporates a 1,005-pixel RGB exposure/color metering sensor to automaticallyproduce outstanding digital images. The “3D Digital Matrix Image Control” system givesit the ability to evaluate the image and intelligently and automatically optimize theresults. This advanced performance gives you the power to preform tasks that untilnow had to be done on a computer during post-processing. The key to this highlyeffective image-enhancing function is the cooperative efforts of three high-performancefunctions—3D Color Matrix Metering, TTL White Balance and Tone Compensation.

• 3D Color Matrix Metering calculates the optimum exposure value by comparingbrightness and color data, along with subject-to-camera distance to a database ofmore than 35,000 actual shots. Use of a database distinguishes this meter from typicalmulti-segment meters.

• TTL White Balance then evaluates the color temperature and makes fine adjustmentsto the predetermined value, automatically achieving proper white balance.

• Tone Compensation selects the optimal tone curve to enable the reproduction ofnatural tones according to the scene brightness and contrast. These three innovativefeatures offered by the D1x give you increased control over total picture quality forincomparable results in digital imaging—automatically.

TTL Flash Control

Uses the five-segment TTL Multi Sensor, with five sensors configured forfor precise flash output. As the shutter release is pressed but before theactual exposure, the Nikon SB-50DX or SB-800AF Speedlights fireimperceptible Monitor pre-flashes to determine the amount of flash out-put by monitoring the light reflecting off of the shutter curtains. In addi-tion,known reflectance values are compared to the actual values inorder to determine the subject’s reflectance and compensate for poten-tial under or over exposure from whiter or blacker subjects.

High-speed AF SystemFeatures the same performance provenMulti-CAM1300 autofocus sensor module(incorporating five AF sensors) as Nikon’slegendary F5 and F100.

Focus Mode: Choose from high-speed,accurate Single Servo (S) AF andContinuous Servo (C) modes, as well asfully mechanical manual focus (M) mode.

AF Area Modes: Single Area AF gives youfive strategic focusing positions to workwith in the frame. The selected focus areais indicated on the top LCD panel andsuperimposed (red) in the viewfinder. Great when shooting carefully composedlandscapes or portraits.

Second area mode is Dynamic AF. In (C)AF mode, if the subject moves out of theselected focus area, Dynamic AF instantlyshifts the focus to another of the fiveareas. In (S) AF mode, the Closest SubjectPriority function automatically selects thefocus area with the closest subject so youcan concentrate on shutter timing.

Focus Tracking with Lock-On: FocusTracking is automatically activated whenthe subject starts to move, regardless ofthe AF mode or AF area mode selected. The computer-assisted system analyzesthe speed and anticipates the direction ofmovement of the subject while driving theautofocus. Focus Tracking is supplement-ed by Overlap Servo which ensures con-stant lens focusing—even during driving—and Lock On, which continuous tracks asubject, even when temporarily blocked.

Quick Response Time &Incredible Shutter Speeds

A quick startup, a short shutter releasetime lag (approx. 0.058 seconds) and fastdata processing (compress and store thedata for 1 frame in 2 seconds) combine toensure speedy and smooth operation.

Charge-coupled electronic shutter enablesyou to set shutter speeds from 30 sec. toan amazing 1/16,000 sec., fast enough tofreeze virtually any action. photography. Capturing the moment demands instant response, high speed,

accuracy, and logical design for ease of handling and operation. Image quality

must be exceptional. And, these images must be deliverable into the

workflow and out to the viewer quickly. Working alongside pros in the

field, Nikon set out to satisfy these needs and demands through ground-up

development of the next-generation professional digital SLR camera.

Designed exclusively for photojournalists and sports/action photographers, the

D2H features the fastest full system performance in a digital SLR camera,

setting a new standard in speed and accuracy while achieving exceptional image

quality. Virtually every aspect of the camera's performance has been designed from the ground up to facilitate high-speed

photography under demanding conditions. The D2H is capable of continuously shooting 8 frames per second and buffers up

to a staggering 40 JPEG images. It incorporates an all new 11-sensor autofocus system with 9 cross type sensors and versa-

tile performance, a revolutionary new DX format 4.1-megapixel JFET imaging sensor called 'LBCAST', and Wi-Fi capabili-

ties for 802.11b wireless transmission of images. It also includes new i-TTL speedlight technology and is bundled with

NikonView 6.1 software.

LBCAST 4.1-megapixel JFET Imaging Sensor The D2H features a new 4.1-megapixel (2484 x 1636) DX format JFET (Junction Field EffectTransistor) Imaging Sensor called LBCAST (Lateral Buried Charge Accumulator andSensing Transistor Array). The new sensor's technology and performance, as developedby Nikon meets the challenging needs of photojournalists and sports/action photogra-phers, and provides the foundation for the D2H system's advanced performance. The sen-sor is not only capable of producing high image quality, but also delivers high-speed per-formance. The sensor reads 2 channels of data from each pixel -- while also handlingbrightness data in the same process to achieve maximum image reproduction speed.Additionally, its JFET technology, combined with a host of new innovations, enables thissensor to render extremely low noise performance with extraordinary color accuracy, detail, sharpness and overall quality that is unparalleled by any other similarly sized sensor.

◆ A new ASIC design significantly reduces color artifacts and ‘jaggies’ on oblique lines, while helping improve overall image sharpness.

◆ Next-generation signal processing algorithms improve automatic functions such as autowhite balance, auto tone control and auto color correction to ensure optimal accuracyfor each scene.

◆ A new color-processing engine minimizes false colors, while maintaining superior colorrendition, accuracy and consistency.

◆ A high signal-to-noise ratio combined with high-level image processing offers enhancedperformance at high ISO settings.

◆ With the new sensor design, powerful algorithms and total image quality control tech-nologies, the D2H produces images far superior compared to other 4-megapixel cameras.

FEATURES

Total Image Quality Using a newly developed Nikon imagingsensor, the D2H is able to producedata-rich files that are compact enoughfor immediate transmission and rapidworkflow, yet yield dramatically highimage quality. While many routinelyassociate image quality and imagesharpness with megapixel count alone, engineers understand that there aremany additional factors that affectsharpness and total image quality.

The D2H’s imaging sensor wasdeveloped together with associatedsupport technology, to overcomenearly every aspect of image qualitydegradation, including false colors, noise, ‘artifacting’ and ‘jaggies’ to namea few. With the D2H system, Nikon isleading action oriented digitalphotography into a new realm whereTotal Image Quality takes precedenceover any individual image specification.

Multi-Cam 2000 Autofocus System

◆ A next generation autofocus system,Multi-Cam 2000 is not only fast enoughto keep up with the D2H’s rapidcontinuous frame rate, but it isremarkably accurate in detecting focuseven in challenging situations, includingdim lighting conditions as low as EV -1.

◆ The system consists of 11 AF sensors, 9of which are cross-type sensors laid outconsistently with the rule of thirds forcomposition, and an additional two sen-sors placed at the horizontal ends of theframe. This ensures that the D2H hasover 75% horizontal autofocus coverage-- the widest cross-type sensor coveragein its class. Photographers have theoption of setting preferences for AF sen-sor selection, including choosing eachsensor individually or combining theminto groups to ensure ideal coverage indiverse picture taking compositions.

◆ The D2H also features enhancedDynamic AF and a new Group DynamicAF detection option, as well as FocusTracking with Lock-On technology toensure razor sharp pictures.

◆ Taking the D2H’s remarkable autofocussystem one step further is its capabilityfor ‘extreme focus detection.’ A typicalcamera can detect focus in a scene upto a certain ‘defocus’ limit, beyondwhich the camera enters a scanningmode. During this mode, the camera'sautofocus system scans through theentire focusing range of the lens beforedetecting a focus point. This processcan waste precious time, especiallywhen photographing high-speed action. The D2H's autofocus system can detectfocus in scenes with about twice thedefocus limit of other cameras, ensuringmore accurate and consistent operation.

Sensitivity (ISO Equivalent))Thorough testing to find the perfect combination of productivity and image qualityrevealed sensitivity of ISO-equivalent 200 to be the optimal starting point for theD2H. Sensitivity can be manually set from ISO-equivalent 200 up to 1,600. CustomSettings can also be used to boost the highest setting one or two steps beyond 1,600ISO-equivalent. The advanced noise-suppression technology of the LBCAST imagesensor and image processing engine greatly reduce picture noise, and are particularlyeffective in the challenging high-sensitivity range.

Exposure System

Center-Weighted Metering Concentrates 75% of its sensitivitywithin an 8mm circle and the remain-ing 25% in the surrounding area. Youcan change the diameter of the circlevia the Custom Settings.

Spot MeteringCan be used with Single Area AFoperation to provide precise meter-ing by reading a 3mm-diameter areathat corresponds to the selected AFarea. Or, use it with Dynamic AF andchoose the sensor to be used formetering.

Exposure Modes

Three Color ModesThe color reproduction system newly developed for the D2H improves on Nikon's alreadyunrivaled color while optimizing the three available color modes to best match the specif-ic assignment and workflow environment

Mode I: sets hue and chroma values that are effective in rendering natural-looking skintones in portraits. (Color profile: sRGB)

Mode II: realizes a wider color reproduction range for high-quality output with a widercolor gamut. (Color profile: Adobe RGB)

Mode III: sets hue and chroma values for landscape and flora colors. (Color profile: sRGB)

3D Color Matrix Metering Automatically calculates the optimumexposure value by evaluating brightness, color, contrast, selected focus area andsubject-to-camera distance information, and then referencing the large onboarddatabase. The combination of Nikon'sexclusive 1,005-pixel RGB exposure/color metering sensor, advancedalgorithms that reference a databasedeveloped from over 30,000 scenes fromactual photography, and high-speedprocessing, results in automaticexposure upon which you can depend.

• Manual control over exposure com-pensation is available from ±5 EV in1/3, 1/2 or 1 EV steps.

• Automatic bracketing of two to nineconsecutive frames with EV valueschanging in increments of 1/3, 1/2,2/3 or 1 EV. Changes for exposurecorrespond with the mode’s auto-matically selected variable. Forexample, bracketing in Shutter Modechanges the aperture, and ApertureMode changes shutter speed.

• Programmed Auto with Flexible Programautomatically sets the shutter speedand aperture. Flexible Program can beused to quickly choose a correct alter-nate exposure-combination setting.

• Shutter-Priority offers a choice of shut-ter speeds from 1/8,000 to 30 seconds.

• Aperture-Priority lets you choose fromthe complete range of aperture settings.

• Manual mode gives you full controlover all settings, including Bulb.

◆ Fisheye-to-rectilinear Image Transformationtransforms fisheye shots from the AF DXFisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED lens intotwo modes (V-mode and H-mode) of ultra-wideangle images. This allows the lens todouble as a useful ultra-wideangle lens.

◆ A wide variety of image adjustments andcorrections can be automatically appliedto any number of files in a folder for greatsavings in time when working with manyphotos shot under like conditions. Batchprocessing in Capture 4 adds moreoptions, including the ability to create newfolders and new destination subfolders.

NEF files are like having a fresh negative on hand. In addition tothe RAW image data captured by the LBCAST sensor and thumb-nail images of the raw data, a basic component within the NEFfile is an Instruction Set that retains the camera settings from themoment the shot was taken. Variations of Instruction Sets can becreated to create several versions of the same image. InstructionSets can be saved and applied to other shots, even large numberof photos from the same shoot (during batch control).

Another advantage of the NEF file is that the 12-bit image datacaptured by the D2H is processed by an advanced algorithm anddisplayed in Nikon Capture 4 as full 16-bit images. Working with16-bit images allows you to make tonal and other colorcorrections with smoother fidelity. You can save the data as a16-bit image TIFF file, save any changes as a new Instruction Setfor the NEF file, or opt for JPEG compression when handling andtransfer speed are the priority.

NIKONAF NIKKOR LENSES

When it comes to choosing photographic equipment, perhaps the most

important decision a photographer faces is which lens system to use. For

the majority of professional photographers, that choice is simple: Nikkor.

The reasons for this are many, not the least of which is Nikon’s total

commitment to controlling every aspect of lens manufacturing. This

no-compromise attitude toward manufacturing extends performance.

For each Nikkor lens is designed to function seamlessly with Nikon SLRs.

This is exemplified most clearly in the legendary Nikon F mount. For

even the most advanced Nikkor lenses incorporate this standard for its consistency and reliability. This design also ensures

that when Nikon introduces new cameras with revolutionary features such as 3D Color Matrix Metering and Multi-Sensor

Balanced Fill-Flash, you’ll always have an array of lenses available to handle these advances.

F D-type Nikkor LensesAF Nikkor D-type lenses are special because they relay subject-to-camera distance information to AF Nikon camera bodies that usethe information. This makes possible new technologies like Nikon’s3D Color Matrix Metering and 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash.

Aspherical Lens ElementsNikon introduced the first photographic lens with aspherical lenselements in 1968. Aspherical lenses minimize the problem of comaand other types of lens distortion—even when used at the widestaperture. They are particularly useful in correcting the distortionin wide-angle lenses. In addition, use of aspherical lenses con-tributes to a lighter and smaller and lens design.

Internal FocusingImagine being able to focus a lens without it changing in size.Nikon’s IF technology enables just that. All internal opticalmovement is limited to the interior of the non-extending lensbarrel. This allows for a more compact, lightweight constructionas well a closer focusing distance.

Rear Focusing (RF) With Nikon’s Rear Focusing (RF) system, all the lens elements aredivided into specific groups, with only the rear lens group movingto conduct focusing. As with IF, this technique makes autofocusingoperation smoother and faster.

Close-Range Correction SystemProviding superior picture quality at close focusing distances andincreasing the close focus range, the Close-Range Correction (CRC)system is one of Nikon’s most important focusing innovations. With CRC, the lens elements are configured in “floating element”design wherein each lens group moves independently to achievefocusing. This ensures superior lens performance even whenshooting at close distances.

ED GlassNikon developed ED (Extra-low Dispersion glass to make telephotolenses that offer superior sharpness and color correction byminimizing chromatic aberration. (Chromatic aberration is a type ofimage and color distortion that occurs when light rays of varyingwavelengths pass through optical glass). ED lenses deliver stunningsharpness and contrast even at their largest maximum apertures.

Nikon Integrated Coating (NIC)To enhance the performance of lens elements, Nikon employssophisticated multi-layer coating to help reduce ghost and flare tonegligible levels. Called Nikon Integrated Coating (NIC), thecoating minimizes reflections over a wide wavelength range, andenhances color balancing. It is carefully integrated into the designof each Nikkor lens type, with the coatings calculated to match thelens type and glass.

AF DC-Nikkor LensesA set of unique lenses for unique portraits, exclusive AF DC(Defocus-image Control) technology allows photographers to con-trol the degree of spherical aberration in the foreground or back-ground by rotating the lens’ DC ring. This will create a roundedout-of-focus blur that is ideal for portrait photography.

AF-S TechnologyAF-S lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM) whichconverts “traveling waves” into rotational energy to focus theoptics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that’s extremelyaccurate and super quiet.

M/A ModeAF-S lenses also feature Nikon’s exclusive M/A mode, that allowsswitching from autofocus to manual operation with virtually notime lag – even during AF servo operation.

Nikkor lenses featuring the Nikon F-mount can be used with the D100, D1X, D1H or D2H,but the picture angle is equivalent to 1.5x focal length in 35mm format.PleaseNote:

AF VR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 D ED (NI8040045AF)

Now photographers who shoot hand-held, especially in low light conditions cancount on dramatically sharper pictures. Equipped with Nikon’s Vibration Reduction(VR) Technology and superior optical design, the AF VR 80-400mm delivers sharpimages in otherwise impossible situations. Extending hand-held picture-taking intothe realm of photography that usually requires a cumbersome tripod, sports andnature photographers can concentrate on capturing the hoop shot of the centuryor the flight of a rare bird knowing that even if their hand is not steady, the imageswill be sharper and truer. (77ø)

• Nikon’s proprietary vibration reduction (VR) systemdetects and compensates for image blur caused by camerashake. When VR is activated, the system allows photogra-phers to shoot with ambient light at shutter speeds thatare slower by up to about 3 stops, when compared to therestrictions of shooting without vibration reduction.

• The VR system uses angular speed sensors that detectminute shifts in camera movement. Data from the sensorsis used to calculate the change in position and drive voicecoil motors to shift the position of the VR lens element.

• Automatically detects shake that takes place during pan-ning in any direction. And there is no need to stop andreset the lens for panning action; it happens automatically.

• Three ED glass elements reduce secondary chromaticaberrations and help the lens provide significantly sharperpictures throughout the 80-400mm zoom range.

• Also features Nikon's Super Integrated Coating, a nine-blade diaphragm for rounder more natural highlights, andA/M switch for fast switching from auto to manual focus.

All AF Nikkor lenses include 1-Year Nikon USA Warranty, plus 4-years extendedservice coverage. Many lenses also include rebates up to $400.

Soft Focus No. 1, No. 2These filters soften images. No. 1 lends aromantic aura to portraits. The strongerNo. 2 produces a fog-like effect in land-scapes and also highlights small subjectsagainst a field of dark space. Both can beused together for stronger effects.Available in 52mm, 62mm and 72mm.

Neutral Density ND2s, ND4s, ND8sThese filters allow you to use larger aper-tures without changing shutter speed oruse slower shutter speeds in bright con-ditions for creative motion effects.Neutral; density filters do not changecolor balance.

Amber Filters A2, A12Amber filters control the bluishcoloration that affect daylight shooting. The mild A2 warms scenes shot oncloudy days. The deeper-colored A12 isused for outdoor shooting in fair weather.

Blue B2, B8, B12Blue filters remove reds and have acooling effect. The mild B2 banishes redsfrom sunrise or sunset shots. The B12neutralizes the red cast produced byphotofloods. Use a B8 or B12 andunderexpose to create eerie night scenes.

Circular Polarizing FiltersThese filters darken the sky withoutaffecting color balance, cut out the glarefrom water and metallic surfaces, andallow shooting through glass windows.Their mounts can be rotated for differentangles which you can monitor throughthe viewfinder. (Note: use of circularpolarizing filters requires a filter hood.

Conversion Filters A12, B2, B8, B12These filters can be used to match filmcolor balances. For example, ColorConversion Filter A12 can be used toshift the color balance of tungsten filmto daylight. Blue Color Conversion FiltersB2, B8 and B12 counteract existing lightthat is too warm. B12 matches artificiallight to that of normal daylight film.

Yellow Y44, Y48, Y52Yellow filters absorb both blue and ultra-violet light so skies appear darker. Theywork well in landscape or telephoto pho-tography, clearing up haze around dis-tant objects. Y44 is the mildest filter andY52 produces the strongest effect.

Orange O56Stronger than yellow filters, the O56tones down blue, ultraviolet and green. Itheightens contrast between sky andobjects and darkens foliage.

Red R60Ultra high contrast. All colors except redare filtered out so blue skies appear almostblack and green leaves appear darker.

Green X0, X1Green filters absorb red and blue, lettinggreen and yellow through. The X0 is idealfor general-purpose use. The X1 givesskin a more natural tone.
