GOOD NEWS

r Kings e9:9a, 11-13a / Romans 9:r{ I Matthew 14:22-33

We've been fortunate to make several trips to Hawaii. On one trip, we saw

lava flowing from a vent on a volcano. l'll never forget it or the offerings ofpineapples, leis, and other things native Hawaiians make to Pele, the

volcano goddess. The volcano erupts when Pele is angry; when it is quiet,

Pele has gone underground.

Great displays of power and destruction are often con-nected with divine

activity, so it seems strange that the Lord doesn't appear to Elijah in

manifestations of wind, earthquake, or fire. Rather, God speaks out ofsilence, and his first words to Elijah are, "Why are you here?"

That's a wondedul question for us today. Why are we here celebrating the

Eucharist? ls it obligation only, or is there something more?

l'd like to think we come to Mass to hear the silence of God calling to our

hearts, Here we can meet God face to face in the Word, in the priest, in one

another and, most intimately, in the bread and wine that is his Body andglood. We take him into ourselves so we won't be like Peter, who wa.lked

into the middle of a storm and began thinking the storm would destroy him

like an angry god.

Rather, we gather at Mass so we can fix our minds and hearts on Christ,

whose power is so great that it needn't manifest itself in destruction but

who, with a word, can calm every storm and take us safely into his care.

dear PADRE

When I pray a rffiry, $o'rld I be thinking abcut Mary and

horv the Lad is with her, tr thinking abcut \ &idr dmde I'mm, ff\,vhat?

The rosary is a chant. It's similm to humming or singing toyourself as akind ofbackground music for your thoughts and

feelings. Praying the rosary is a kind of background music as

you link your life eryerience with the life of Jesus.

This is the point of what are called the mysteries of therosary, scenes from the life of Jesus. The twenty mysteries ofChrist are the five joyful mysterieg the five sorrowfulmysteries, the five glorious mysteries, and the five luminousmysteries.

I,et Jesus'mother and her Hail Marys guide your meditation. As with chant or background musico you may seem to bepaymg no attention to them even as they keep you going.

Dont be discouraged if your thoughts wander all over theplace. Thd's part of the secret of the rosary: It opens yourdeeper selfto you and to God. The important thing is to wantto pray, to walk with Mary, to honor and love Jesus.

Like all prayer, the rosary is a power. It's shaping you andguiding you evon when what you feel is nothing and whatyou think is anything and everything.

The great Feast of the Assumpticn

Celebrated every year on August r5 theFeast of the Assumption of the Blessed

Virgin Mary commemorates the death ofMary and her bodily assumption intoHeaven, before her body could begin todecay--a foretaste of our own bodilyresurrection at the end of time. Because

it signifies the Blesse.d Virgin's passing

into eternal life, it is the most importantof all Marian feasts and a Holy Day ofObligation (Diocese of Honolulu is

exempt)
