This guide will show you how to remove the directional buttons and the right and left bumpers. Onceremoved, the buttons can be cleaned or replaced.

Step 1 — Disassembling Nintendo DS Lite Bottom Case

Remove the following 7 screwssecuring the lower case to the DSLite:

3 silver tri-wing screws (5mmlong)

1 black tri-wing screw (4mm)

2 gold Phillips screws (4mm)

1 silver Phillips screw (3mm)

Do not remove the silver PH screw(3mm) in the battery compartmentyet. It holds the main PCB in place.

Step 2

Remove the plastic insert (orcartridge) from the lower slot (Slot2).

Step 3

Flip the unit over.

Use a spudger to pry open the gap between the bottom case and the front panel. Work all the wayaround the case until the panel is free.

Avoid touching the L and R shoulder buttons, because they pop off easily and are difficult toreassemble. Keeping the bottom case against your workbench will help hold them in place.

Step 4

Carefully separate the two pieces by hand.

The two shoulder buttons are made up of three pieces -- the plastic button, a pin, and a spring. Ifthey accidentally pop out while you are working, study the picture and make sure you put thespring in the correct position.

When reassembling the cover, make sure that the power switch cover on the bottom case is in theoff (down) position. Otherwise, the power switch cover can break the very fragile power switchupon reassembly.

Step 5 — Buttons

Remove the following 7 screwslocated on the lower case of the DSLite:

1 black tri-wing screw (4mm)

1 silver Phillips screw (3mm)

2 gold Phillips screws (4mm)

3 silver tri-wing screws (5mm)

Do not remove the silver PH screwlocated in the battery compartmentin this step, as it holds the mainPCB in place.

Step 6

Remove the plastic insert/cartridgefrom the lower slot.

Flip the system over.

Using a spudger tool, pry around the gap between the bottom of the case and the front panel untilthe entire panel is free.

Please use caution when approaching the previous step, as the L and R shoulder buttons pop offeasily. It is recommended to place the bottom of the case against a flat surface to keep the buttonsin place.

Carefully separate the two pieces.

Note that the two shoulder buttons are composed of three pieces: the plastic button, a spring, anda pin. Please refer to the image provided to ensure the spring is in the correct position.

It is important that the power switch cover located on the bottom case is in the down/off position,as it can easily break the power switch when reassembling the cover.

Step 9

After taking off the back panel,remove the two Phillips #00 screwsthat secure the PCB to the case.

Step 10

Using the plastic opening tool, gently begin to separate the motherboard from the rest of thedevice.

The ribbon cable and two other wires are still connected to the motherboard. The right and leftbumpers tend to fall out.

Step 11

Using metal tweezers, remove therubber padding from the buttons thatyou are going to replace.
