Winter Safety TipsCanadian winters are infamous for being cold. So here are some safety tips to keep you safe and warm for the winter holidays.1. PICK THE RIGHT SHOVELChoose the tool that suits your size. Using a smaller shovel will keep you from lifting more weight than you can handle safely.2. BE PREPAREDCheck the weather regularly and give yourself an ex-tra few minutes in the morning to clear your entrance or walkway as well as around your mailbox. Ensure stairs and walkways are in safe condition, and remem-ber to keep a shovel on hand.3. SHOVELING SAFELYWhen shoveling, it’s best to stand with your feet about hip-width apart for balance. 4. DON’T DO THE TWISTAvoid twisting your body to move snow. Instead, re-position your feet in the direction you’re taking it.5. LEARN TO LIFTAlways bend at the knees to avoid back injuries, and tighten your stomach muscles as you lift.6. SAND AND SALTGenerously cover icy patches with salt or sand to keep your delivery personnel and other visitors from slip-ping and falling.7. FOOTWEARIt is important to choose a good pair of winter boots, ice grippers on footwear can help you walk on hard packed snow and ice – but be careful! Grippers become dangerously slippery and must be removed before walking on smooth surfaces such as stone, tile and ceramic. The outer material of winter footwear should be water repellent and/or waterproof to keep the feet dry.8. CLOTHINGDress properly and use layering to keep you warm when outside in the winter months. Ensure winter footwear is insulated to provide comfort for the tem-peratures during the winter months.

9. WALKINGSlow down and think about your next move. Keep your body as loose as possible; spread your feet to more than a foot apart to provide a base of support. Make the step small, placing your whole foot down at once. 10. STAIRS/STEPSIf available, use a handrail. Maintain your balance by looking with your eyes and minimizing the shifting of your head. Don’t take chances when steps are covered with snow or ice.11. IN YOUR VEHICLETry and keep the inside of the vehicle free of snow and moisture as much as possible, wet floor can cause slipping hazards.

OTHER LITTLE KNOWN FACTS:o A fresh snowfall can cover up hazards such as icy patches or uneven surfaces.o Ice is most slippery at around plus 1 or 2 degrees Celsius due to the film of water that forms on the sur-face.o Areas in shadows still can have a layer of ice despite temperatures being above 0 degrees Celsius.o Use caution when walking around vehicles as tire marks can pack the snow and make the surface slip-pery.

Community Initiative would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas

and a Safe & Happy New Year,Hai Hai

The Maskwacis Charity Check Stop was anoth-er huge success, and the generosity of those who donated to the project was truly heart-warming. In the spirit of giving, the Ermine-skin Food Bank would like to donate $100 to the Mimiw-Sakahikan School in Pigeon Lake to assist with their student Breakfast/Lunch Program. We are sending out a challenge to our friends and neighbors at the Samson Food Bank to meet or beat our donation to

this cause.

We wish for you a safe and happy Holiday Season.

JokeSo, there were three Maple Leaf fans coming home from their famous playoff Game 7, Third period choke blowing a 3 goal lead. Angry, they failed to notice a train until it was too late, and got smucked real good. Once in heaven, they asked God “why”, “Why would he allow their team to blow a three goal period lead game seven”, not happy with the answer they got, they swore and vented their frustration. So God sent them to hell. He also told the Devil to torture them be-cause of the language they used. The Devil turned up the heat, soon everyone was sweating and roasting, except the three Maple Leaf Fans, who were sitting relaxed on lawn chairs, and this irritated the Devil. So, he opened Hell’s window and all these flies came fly-ing in, a great cloud of flies, covering the sky, getting into everything, bugging everybody except the three Maple Leaf Fans. This angered the Devil and he shut off the heat. The next morning everything was frozen and covered in ice. Looking around he saw the three Maple Leaf Fans jumping up and down cheering, cel-ebrating. Puzzled, he went up to the three and said “When you three Damn Maple Leaf Fans got here, God told me to torture you, so I turned up the heat, and it didn’t bother you, why?” “Cause it reminded us of Toronto in July” they responded. “What about all the flies?” he asked. “It kind of reminded us of Toronto in August, muggy and black flies everywhere” they answered. “What about all the ice and everything be-ing frozen this morning?” the Devil asked them, “Oh, we heard if hell frozen over, Toronto was going to win the Stanley Cup”...

My First Christmas in Heaven...I see the countless Christmas Trees around the world below,With tiny lights. Like Heaven’s star’s, reflecting on the snow. The sight is so spectacular, please wipe away that tear,For I am spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.I hear the many Christmas songs, that people hold so dear,But the sounds of music can’t compare with the Christmas choir up here.I have no words to tell you, the joy their voices bring,For it is beyond description to hear the angels sing.I know how much you miss me. I see the pain inside your heart,But I am not so far away. We really aren’t apart. So be happy for me dear ones, you know I hold you dear. And be glad I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.I send you each a special gift from my heavenly home above.I send you each a memory of my undying love,After all “Love” is the gift more precious than pure gold.It was always most important in the stories Jesus told. Please love and keep each other, as my Farther said to do,For I can’t count the blessings or love he has for you.So have a Merry Christmas and wipe away that tear.Remember, I’m spending Christmas with Jesus Christ this year.
