    During Ja:rru.ary, 3d Battalion, 26th Malrines continued to e.ondhcit.     - • • 1. The one major a.dministrativ·e probleu: enco1mt::;:c-:;d during the t:n'Jnth of January involved the handling and reporting o:i' casualties sustained •. All injured personnel were evacuated to Phu Bai for treatment and with the administrative rear echelon located in Dong Ha~ many hours were consumed trying to confirm the types of injuries and obtain accurate condition and prognosis prior to submitting reports to higher echelon. All reporting of casualties was accomplished by telephone due to the distance between the Medical Clearing facility end the administrative echelon of the Battalion. Transportation from the rear echelon to the "Chinook11 area of operations was also a problem when trying to meet the deadline imposed for submission of condolence letters on personnel killed in action. On many cases, air transportation was not available and a delay of 1 to 2 days was encountered. Had the rear echelon been located in Phu Bai, or had the casua.lt.ies been evacuated to the medical facility at Dong Ha, it is believed that the

The land is being cleared by the refugees, and local civilians will provide the labor force necessary to complete construction. The beginning of TET is the target date for the completion of the first major phase of cons-truction. A bulldozer has been made avatl.able by 3/26 to the District Chief for use in clearing the land where necessary.

    2.. ~ety Regulations and FAM Firing: All personnel joined during January were instructed in proper pTocedures regarding weapons; and ammunition, namely, regulations pertaining to chambering rounds in weapons, proper hamdling of grenades, and ammunitien handling.

    Before joining companies all personnel FAM fired their weapons and established battle sights on the range at the edge of the B&tta~ion perimeter.

    3· PreventiV:e; Maintenance for PU-42z' Generator: The Battalion S-2 scouts received approximately 30 hours of instruction on preventive ID2.intenance of the PU-422 generator from communications personnel on January 7, 8, 9, and 17. This generator is used with the AN/T~S-2.1; the operaticn of which he~ been a primary function of the scouts in Oper.a.tion CHINOOK. ·
