Electricity conditions in Pakistan

• Electricity production in Pakistan• Power shortage of 5300 MW deficit estimated by

Wind Speed

• Studies conducted by the Government of Pakistan (GOP) through Pakistan Metrological Department (MET Office) and Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB)

• The annual mean wind speed is estimated to be 6.86m/s at 50 meter above ground level. The annual power density of area is 408.6 W/m2, which bring the site into good category of power potential, which means this area is suitable for large economically viable wind farm.

Major wind resource areas

– Southeastern Pakistan especially• Hyderabad to Gharo region in southern Indus Valley• Coastal areas south of Karachi• Hills and ridges between Karachi and Hyderabad– Northern Indus Valley especially• Hills and ridges in northern Punjab• Ridges and wind corridors near Mardan and Islamabad– Southwestern Pakistan especially• Near Nokkundi and hills and ridges in the Chagai area• Makran area hills and ridges– Central Pakistan especially• Wind corridors and ridges near Quetta• Hills near Gendari– Elevated mountain summits and ridge crests especially in northern Pakistan

Site Description

• The Gharo Hyderabad wind corridor is identified by the AEDB as a resource of high wind regimes with a potential of wind power generation of more than 40,000 MW.

Location

• South-eastern part of Pakistan between Hyderabad and Karachi

• In western and northern directions, a sparsely populated semi-desert area with rare vegetation can be found

• While in eastern and southern directions the Indus delta region provides agricultural land with consequently higher population density.

Land study

• Partly rocky• Less vegetation• Two hills about 60 m high• 1283 acres about 5.2 km sq• Installation of 50 MW wind farm• Settlements Nooriabad and Jhimpir

Economic impact

Cost analysis• Generating cost• 1. Capital investment 75%• 2. Maintenance cost 25%• It’s a capital intensive project requiring heavy

investment in the initial stages• Turbine price is the largest single investment

approximately 60%-80%

Economic impact•Cost components•Initial cost•1. Turbine•2. Transformers •3. Protection and metering equipment•4. Foundation•5. Electrical installation•6. Grid connection•7. Road construction•8. Land lease•9. Approvals•10. Planning cost•11. Financial cost (legal and consultation fee)•12. Infrastructure•13. Contingencies•Maintenance cost•1. Unscheduled maintenance•2. Scheduled maintenance•3. Long term replacement•Operational cost•1. Land lease•2. Taxes•3. Insurance•4. Administration cost•5. Utilities

The total investment for the proposed project is Rs: 850 million and pay back period 7-8 years. The capital cost of a

typical wind power project ranges Rs 4 to5 crore per MW.

• Pakistan Meteorological Department• WIND ENERGY PROJECT• A Project funded by Ministry of Science & Technology
