Retiring members of the Committee Maureen Coles and Rachael Markham were thanked fortheir contribution to the hall over many years - Maureen 11 and Rachael 7. The Parish Council representative, Councillor Peter Lawrence has resigned from the Committee and is replaced by Councillor Stephen Sandercock. He will be joined by two new Trustees Gaye Duncombe and Caelia Pinkney who has taken on the role of Treasurer.The accounts for the Financial Year 2010 were presented and approved with the outgoing Treasurer highlighting a 43% improvement in income from hiring over 2009. The hard work by the committee in improving the hall facilities over the last 4/5 years appear to have been very worthwhile. PARISH PLAN “Work on the current Village Plan started shortly after the Millennium celebrations and was completed in 2004 so it now needs a wash and brush up! A number of residents have expressed an interest in joining the update group. If you are keen to get involved please contact a Parish Councillor asap. HDC are in the process of a Planning Inspectors Review of their updated spatial strategy released last October and we were represented at a meeting called to outline the process. Comment was made that local Village Plans were not referred to in the original document and this point is being picked up by the Inspector. A verbal discussion with the lead officer confirms the intention of HDC to rectify this, particularly against the backdrop of Localism Agenda and it is likely to be on the agenda once the Strategy document is finally passed around Spring 2012. It is thus important that we update our document over the Winter in readiness so that it can form part of the District spatial strategy. Car park access limited for water main works Water main replacement work being carried out in Market Harborough will mean limited access to one of the town’s car parks.Severn Trent Water, which is carrying out a water main replacement programme in the town centre, has advised Harborough District Council that there will be limited vehicle access
along Bowden Lane during the work, scheduled for 4th July 2011. It will last for last for approximately two weeks and will mean the long stay parking spaces in the Doddridge Road car park, accessed off Bowden Lane, will be inaccessible during the Bowden Lane works. The short stay section of the car park, accessed from Doddridge Road, will remain open for use. Alternative long stay parking facilities in Market Harborough can be found in the car parks in Angel Street off Fairfield Road, Springfield Street and St Mary’s Road East.Severn Trent Water has advised the council that the water mains replacement works planned in other areas of the town centre should not result in the closure of any other council-operated car park.Enjoy a safe summer this year The Harborough District Community Safety Partnership will be visiting key events in the social calendar as part of its ‘Safer Summer Campaign’, which ran successfully last year during the World Cup tournament.Representatives from the partnership, made up of police, councils, fire service and others, will be at Lutterworth Carnival on Saturday, August 20 and have been in Market Harborough and Lutterworth town centres, and speaking to young people about their concerns at the Rock on the Rec music festival in Market Harborough on August 5.The aim will be to raise awareness about anti-social behaviour, substance misuse, violence prevention and fire safety, as well as offer advice about alcohol and related health issues. will also be inviting people to take part in a quiz with a prize. The police have also launched their annual drink-drive campaign, which saw three arrests in the first day, and are warning people that they will be breath-testing people in the Harborough district.
The Harborough District Core Strategy – a key part of the Local Development Framework (LDF) – was submitted to the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government in April 2011. It is now set to be examined by an independent inspector appointed by the Secretary of State. The Core Strategy has been three years in development and been through a series of public consultation exercises. The last consultation was at the end of 2010, and resulted in more than 600 representations from residents and businesses interested in the future of the district. These were examined by the Planning Inspectorate in April 2011. When adopted, the Core Strategy will map out the amount and location of housing up to 2026. It will also highlight preferred allocations for employment, retail, leisure and other uses. Next month, the Core Strategy will be opened up to independent scrutiny by a representative of the Planning Inspectorate, Kevin Ward, at a hearing beginning on Tuesday, 19 July, 2011 at 10am in the Harborough District Council chamber, Adam & Eve Street, Market Harborough. It will last for approximately two weeks. The public are welcome to observe the hearing, but will not be able to make representations. A question was raised re. the cost of and content of The North Kilworth Newsletter. It was pointed out that the Newsletter provided a much needed source information for the Village at what the Parish Council felt was a reasonable cost. It was pointed out that the expenditure did not include income from paid advertisements. An offer was made by Councillor Hardwick for the questioner to visit her to to discuss the content of the Newsletter. It was agreed that a set of draft minutes would be placed on the Parish Council’s notice boards as soon as possible after any meeting.OPEN MEETING Councillor Hardwick reported that the CIC had been successful in their being one of six villages shortlisted for the Jubilee Millions Lottery. The CIC would be notifying the village and encouraging their participation in voting in the final on 27th June 2011. The Parish Council was requested to make a donation of £100 towards the cost of promotion. On being put to the vote the motion was carried with the abstention of Councillor Hardwick.A parishioner raised the question of the need for the Parish Plan to be updated. Councillor Green indicated that the Parish Council were aware of the need to up to date and had appointed a Sub Committee to take the task on. There will be an Open Meeting when parishioners will be able to involve themselves in the updating of the Plan.The status of the Heritage Initiative was raised. The remaining funds were being used for heritage base expenditure such as street name plates.The question of planting bulbs along the bridle way was raised, and would be discussed at the next Parish Council meeting.Councillor Lawrence informed the meeting that he had discussed the matter of the provision of a defibrillator for village use. It was agreed to discuss the matter at the next Parish Council meeting.Councillor Lawrence agreed to contact VOSA with regard to the recently granted planning permission for a site in Pincet Lane.Councillor Knight confirmed that a planning application regarding the future of trees at Dag Lane had not been submitted.

The woman apologized and explained, "We didn't have the green thing back in my day." The clerk responded, "That's our problem today. The last generation did not care enough to save our environment." right, that generation didn't have the green thing in its day. Back then, they returned their milk, soda and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But they didn't have the green thing back in that customer's day.

On April 13th 2011 Police raided a property in North Kilworth owned by Charles Smith. The Police served a warrant for stolen or cloned vehicles & stolen or forged paperwork relating to the cloning of vehicles.NO STOLEN OR CLONED VEHICLES WERE FOUND. Charles Smith & his daughter were arrested & taken to Euston St Police station in Leicester whilst 9 Police Officers conducted an intensive & thorough search of the property & out-buildings. Six hours later the Police left the property having found nothing related to the warrant.However items were taken that were not on the warrant including ornaments, phones & laptops (with receipts), and paperwork related to business. After 12 hours in custody Charles Smith and his daughter were released on bail.After 5 weeks of intense investigation into Mr Smith’s bank & tax accounts the Police issued a Bail Cancellation Notice as there was ‘insufficient evidence’ against him & he was asked to collect his belongings from the Police station. A formal complaint has been made by Mr Smith and a police investigation is now taking place as some items were not returned having gone missing from a locked room. The meeting is being held at South Kilworth Village Hall on TUESDAY 5TH JULY, at 7pm. We currently have offers on the table from suppliers who are interested in signing up customers on a group basis. The offers we have range from 40.5p per litre to 45.5p per litre, which appears to be much less than the average price currently being paid in South Kilworth. CAR ON LEVEL CROSSING: June Edition – The News
Clearly this was a Humber Super Snipe owned by one of the local gentry at a time when nobody used roads to go long distances. Far more interesting is the railway scene .First off the gates are intact so this suggests the Press were out at a time when North Kilworth gates were regularly demolished by runaway lorries running hot brakes from Bosworth Hill. Second the carriages…..a Gresley teak bodied compo suggests a parcels return to Peterborough.The British Railways 3rd class open is designed at Derby by Graham Fish’s Dad who had a hand in the bogies. Duncan was an unassuming designer in the great tradition of railway carriage and wagon designers.On the whole a great representation of a more civilised and paced existence “Puffer”
I have been online and seen the June newsletter and we think that the car at the level crossing is a Humber from the latter part of the 1950's and if you look very carefully there is a car parked by the building which looks like an Austin A30 which belonged to Miss Peek who worked as a Goods Clerk, and if my memory serves well it was grey.Linda Berry

The TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief, not the size of Yorkshire. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand. When they packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, they used a wadded up old newspaper to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, they didn't fire up an engine
and burn petrol just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills. But she's right; they didn't have the green thing back then. They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled their writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But they didn't have the green thing back then.
Back then, people took the tram or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school instead of turning their mums into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint.But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful the old folks were just because they didn't have the green thing back then ??
Mine’s a Carling!You may remember the advertising campaign for the Carling Black Label drink where there was a scene from Hamlet in which an actor plays ‘keepy uppy’ with Yorick’s skull, or of Lancaster Bombers on a Dambusters’ mission defeated by an athletic German soldier. Each advert finished with the famous line, “I bet he drinks Carling Black Label!”Well it’s clear that plenty of the amber stuff was consumed by one of the 2011 Kilworth Challenge teams representing the village. In fact the four members were literally running on it and achieved a unique double success at the event. Indeed as mentioned in Nick Otter’s report on page 7 North Kilworth was extremely well represented and had great success in the event. We can be proud of all of them, but one team went that extra mile literally running their way to achieve an outstanding result both in fund-raising and the event itself.What a performance by local lads “Running on Carling” comprising of Captain Simon “Blunty” Jones, Jay “Le Roth” Wright, Ben “Le Dobster” Hurst and Stuart “Muppet” Conopo. They not only achieved a tremendous 5th place in the competition, but more importantly raised an incredible £6282.24 to be, by a distance, the winning fund raising team.
Indeed an amazing £85,000 was raised this year and as the Challenge committee will testify, their main aim is always to raise funds to enable disadvantaged and disabled kids to enjoy the out doors more whilst also supporting local good causes.Well Team Carling did more than their bit to achieve this aim and Simon told The News how it all came to be. “We started 2 years ago following a slightly drunken conversation” he said, “I wanted to enter the Challenge and managed to find some locals who were also up for it and so the idea was born.”In 2010, their first year, the boys raised over £4k (2nd best fundraiser) and finished a respectable 20th, but were determined to have another go this year and improve further with, as it turned out, spectacular results.Simon stressed that the main focus was to be the fundraising but emphasised that they could not have achieved such success without their support team. “My first thanks go to Rachel, Emma, Heather and Sam who not only helped at the various fundraising events, but also ensured that we had plenty of food and beer during the Challenge itself.”Rachel said “A lot of Carling (naturally) was consumed whilst we planned the various
fundraising events. and the results and achievement has been really worth it.”“It’s just fantastic” enthused Heather, “I can’t believe how much we managed to raise, the team have been brilliant.”Emma was amazed at the result saying “I’m so proud of you all.” This left a delighted Sam to comment “Being top fundraiser and to finish so strongly is great, well done!”The team worked very hard in their fund-raising efforts including a car boot sale, Quizzes at Christmas and in May and the main raffle, the details of which are on page 2, Simon thanked all the team’s sponsors and suppliers of prizes of which Andy had a big hand in obtaining, plus Stuart for writing the quizzes and compere Cliff, plus the Challenge Committee and marshals.The last word of thanks was reserved for his team-mates Jay, Ben and Stuart. Simon paid tribute to them with “Your tremendous efforts along the way, energy and enthusiasm at every challenge and above all team work saw us finish an amazing 5th overall, something we didn’t expect but are so proud to have achieved, well done!” They’ll no doubt all be back running next year, Carling at the ready! The 2011 Kilworth Challenge – Another Triumph
Yet another fantastic event . and one that was highly appropriate for the 21st year of the Challenge. It raised one of the highest amount of sponsorship ever at £85019.24 and took the running total to nearly £950000 over the full life of the Challenge. A truly amazing total. Also a triumph for Kilworth and other local teams over those from farther afield. This year the event was won by `The Horny Bar Studs VI`, led by John Fish with Matt Soulsby, James York and Will Swaithest. John spent most of his school years in North Kilworth and his team the `Horny Bar Studs` has been winners in the past. Second was a team from North Kilworth, the `Eager Belvoirs II` with Aiden Ellis, Norman Byrd, Tim Grossey and Phil Cooper, and third `The Go Go Squad` involved more North Kilworthonians with Nick Coles, Tom Gregson, Ed Chilton and Andy Kellet. The winning female team was `4 Non Blondes` from Market Harborough comprising Lorna, Caroline and Jennifer Paris with Charlotte Armstrong. Mixed team winners was `3 Locals and a Foreigner` with Laura and Mike Bent and Polly and Huw Ross. Polly was also the fastest female yomper. Tim Cullinan won the fastest male yomper title. The over 40s category was won by a long standing team in the competition `The Kilworth
Lions` with Neil Foster, John Linnell, Adam Herring and Stefan Green. The team that raised the greatest amount of sponsorship was `Running on Carling` with Simon Jones, Stuart Conopo, Ben Hurst and Jason Wright, all very local to North Kilworth. Their efforts spread almost over the whole year raised a splendid £6282.24. All 45 teams competed over the weekend doing nigh on 30 challenges in the surrounding countryside walking and running about 25 miles. As usual the challenges covered physical ones, puzzles and those that were just plain fun but all with a serious competitive edge. They featured the `Tarzan` course (twice) and swinging through the trees, raft building, canoeing, word and number puzzles, building a da Vinci bridge, egg throwing, and using a ducking stool to collect water plus sprinting over a cross country course. The biggest challenge as per usual was to see how much funding they could raise. This bulk of this year`s sponsorship will go to Dukes Barn in Derbyshire and to the Leics Clubs for Young People, but also to many other local charities and good causes in the Mkt Harborough area. We feel that Dukes Barn epitomizes what the Challenge is all about … it provides facilities that allow handicapped and disadvantaged kids to experience the
thrill of doing all sorts of outdoor pursuits that are normally not open to them. A recent visit allowed us to see what has been provided by the Challenge over the years and included support to build an obstacle course that can cope with people in wheelchairs, specially fitted canoes, and an all weather sports arena for tennis, basketball and other ball games. As ever we continue to be really impressed by the dedication of the staff there and the welcome and appreciation that they have for the efforts of the Challenge. This year financing will be made available for a replacement of their mini-bus which is coming to the end of its life and is essential to ferrying the kids around. We, the organizers (Colin Clarke, Paul Whitehead, Mike Lawrence, Bruce Phillips, Nick Otter, Duncan Moss, Mick Faulkner, Chris Mitchell and Manfred Morris), would like to express our appreciation to everyone that took part, the Sports Club, the marshals, landowners, and the sponsors that helped in ensuring such a successful event. We look forward (hopefully) to hitting the million mark in 2012. That will be a truly memorable achievement and will merit some serious celebration. Please help us to get there Nick Otter.

Change? No fear!Sunday 3rd July is St Thomas Day. Famous for doubting, he is cruelly misrepresented if we only hear that one story. He inspires us to courage, to questioning, and to faith. Thomas was all for going with Jesus to the house of Lazarus after Lazarus’ death – the others were afraid that they and Jesus would be stoned by the Jews. (John 11 v7-11) He asked ‘Where?’ after Jesus said he was leaving them, and that they knew the way to the place he was going. (John 14 1-6) He inspires us to admit our lack of proper understanding, and encourages us to ask questions that will help us resolve it– even at the risk of appearing silly or foolish. And famously, he doubted. Having heard from the other disciples of Jesus’ resurrection, Thomas, hoping against hope for this to be so, held back until he saw for himself. Then, he was first to recognise Jesus as Messiah –‘My Lord and my God.’ (John 20 24-29)He grew in faith and understanding as he walked with Jesus, and he was a certainly changed man after his meeting with the risen Christ. As many people are. Change is something we sometimes seek. We know therapeutic value of a holiday! But we’re naturally wary of changes to deeply familiar things. Rightly so – we need to ponder and reflect carefully about them. But it is easy to become so familiar with something that we don’t see other possibilities, chances to expand or improve. It’s easier to leave things as they are...I’d like to quote a Prison Governor, who left this thought behind when she moved on: ‘... it’s important to me that you don’t stop believing in what you do, remember how good you are and don’t be afraid of change, as often it’s change that takes you where you need to be.’The Diocese is currently discussing changes in church structure – it’s called 2020 Vision. We already have teams of ministers across groups of Churches, but we need to share more resources in order to maintain an active church ministry in every community. Any change shouldn’t mean that we lose our individual identity as Churches or Parishes – just that we open up a bit, and meet others on the same journey, as Thomas did when he went with Jesus in spite of the known risk. We can’t be certain what the outcome will be, but we shouldn’t be afraid to look at change. Thomas was wary – questioned and was cautious as he went along with the idea. We should go prayerfully, not fearing change, but seeing where it takes us. It doesn’t mean we’ll be changed out of all recognition. We must keep what is good and valuable, and share it. Maybe we will change others! Like Thomas, we must keep questioning, keep taking calculated risks – and remember how good we are together! Let’s keep on believing in what we do – in what God does. The 2011 Kilworth Family Challenge will be held on Saturday 3rd September 2011. It will start at 0930 and finish at around 1530 and be followed by a BBQ. It will be based at the North Kilworth Sports Club where it will start/finish and involve doing various challenges in the local immediate area. There will be medals, prizes and trophies up for grabs.We are looking for 12 teams to enter. Cost of entry is 25 pounds/team. ‘Crossing the Threshold’ at Launde Abbey and St Martins House
Events were recently held to celebrate the refurbishment of our diocesan retreat house, Launde Abbey, and the opening of St Martins House, the diocesan offices and community space next to the Cathedral in Leicester. The ‘Crossing the Threshold’ events gave all who came a chance to find out about these two places which are there for all of us in the diocese and beyond. The weather challenged those at Launde (we have been praying for rain!) but smiled on the barbeque at St Martins. For thoughts of a few members of our parishes in Avon Swift who attended the events. Kendal-Allen, James Baker, Scott McVea, Thomas Kelly, Oliver Morgan, Chloe Bradley-Upton, Edward Sandercock, Grace Lindop and Sam Hall all gave it all they had got at Saffron Lane a small stadium where many schools participate in throwing, running & long jump to win the event. Megan O’Neill was in seventh heaven when she came first in the 75m sprint and second in the final! Chloe Bradley- Upton was glowing when she came second in her 75m sprint and 4th in the final! Rachel Mellar felt like an angel as she flew over the sand when she came 6th in the long jump! Sam Hall was over the moon to come 4th in the boys’ long jump! Ollie Morgan was definitely jolly as he sped over the finish line when he came second in the 800m! Grace Lindop, Megan & Jessica O’Neill, Chloe Bradley-Upton & Daisy Swan really shone as they came 4th in the relay final! Scott Mcvea, Oliver Morgan, James Baker, Ethan Swan and Jack Mellar didn’t leave their energy for later when they came 5th

Tag Rugby Tournament On Tuesday the 24th of May four year 5 boys and four year 5 girls went to Lutterworth Rugby Club in Bitterswell to play a tag rugby tournament organised by the Leicester Tigers. Everybody got stuck in and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. North Kilworth came 4th in the tournament and the team had a photo taken with Peter Bucknall as well as receiving a signed programme and key ring May Ball Sam Ha . St Andrews Primary School held a May Ball on Saturday 21st May at Kilworth Springs Golf Club. Every guest had a three course dinner and music was performed by ‘The Flange’. There was a raffle with some excellent prizes which included vouchers for restaurants, a trip in a glider, hampers and lots more. Everyone had a great time and £600 was raised towards school funds. All children in Key stage 2 are taking part as well as some of the younger children who are part of the choir.The Wizard of Oz was written by l. Franck Baum and illustrated by W.W, Denstow. It was originally published by George m. Hill Company in Chicago on may 17, 1900 and made into a film in 1939. Say Hello toThis month we would like to share with you what we seek to do with ‘Say Hello to’ and ‘Memory Corner’, as well as inviting you to help us gather material that is likely to be of interest to the readers of NK News (that’s you!)What are we trying to do with Say Hello to? We are trying to promote
conversations. We aim to increase the interaction
that takes place as people move around the village.
We are trying to prompt some fun as people go about their business and pleasure. In this respect we have clearly succeeded. Every version of Say Hello has resulted in people chatting about things that they would not otherwise have discussed. For instance, we prompted a crazy flurry of ‘Hellos’ on Facebook as a result of our slot on Sue and Andy Winstanley. (Whilst on our track record, we deny we were responsible for Nogger Ball’s heart scare!)
It is not just a look at the past with one of the village elders. We aim to cover that through Memory Corner.
There are some ground rules that apply to the writing of Say Hello to:-
1. If those featured don’t want to share a particular aspect of their life, then it doesn’t go in.
2. If you want something stressed – about your personal interests or business for instance, then it goes in.
3. Those featured get to proof read the final article, so that they are happy with it.
4. We fully understand if, when approached, people do not want to feature. It’s okay to say ‘no’ because we have a very long list of potential people to focus on.

A bunch of intrepid cyclists from the Mountain Bikers of North Kilworth (MONKs) left the security of Kilworth in the early morning of Sun 1st June to travel to the First World War Western Front in Belgium and France. Quite an achievement as it was the Millennium Green BBQ the night before. They were preceded by the essential chuck wagon-cum-ambulance which contained all the bikes and the sustenance needed for a hard week on the road. This `band of brothers` were `Captain` David Holmes, `Sergeant` Graham Fish, `Privates` David Saunders, Nick Otter, Mike Allman, Chris Mitchell plus two reinforcements from South Kilworth in `Privates` Laurence Howie and Geoff Rogers with `Driver and Batman` David Brown. The purpose of the trip was to get a better understanding of WWI & its history and to visit the graves of several soldiers from N. Kilworth who had died in the war . not to mention the pleasure of riding through the Belgian and French countryside, eating well, drinking beer and supping wine of only the best quality. The trip took them from Lille to Ypres on the first day visiting the Menan Gate and the cemetery at Tyne Cot which list over 100,000 names of the individuals who have no grave. One of these was Merricke Entwistle Lloyd, his name (Lloyd ME) being on Plaque 22 of the Menan Gate where a small wooden cross was laid. The second day took the MONK band from Ypres to Arras. Another small wooden cross was laid at the Arras Memorial for Sydney Wickes. This ride entailed riding up the Vimy Ridge (much wind and rain so it was understood how wet it could get) to where the Canadians made their impressive push. The Canadian National Vimy Memorial is staffed by students from Canada acting as guides and the MONKs were treated to a tour of the trenches and tunnel systems by Lizzette, a young undergraduate from Toronto. The third day went from Arras to Peronne on the Somme River. Before leaving Arras there was a tour around the Wellington Caverns, a quarry extended by Kiwi soldiers to create a network of tunnels and rooms where some 2000 soldiers `hid` at a depth of 40m for a week prior to the battle at Vichy. Onwards and upwards the route went to the Thipeval Monument (a memorial to some 73,367 men who died in the battle of the Somme and have no grave), the Ulster Tower & Lochnager Crater (a huge hole in the ground caused by explosives signaling the start of the battle of the Somme). Morning coffee was taken at Café Chez Fred `in memory` of Manfred Morris & Colin Clarke who were not able to be on this trip. Then it was to Grove Town Cemetery, a small remote site containing `only` 2000 graves one of which was James Belgrave. He was a pilot and won the MC and bar for his exploits. Again a small cross was laid in memory. The 4th day was from Peronne to Laon, a medieval walled hill city with a cathedral that rivals the one at Reims, and Notre-Dame. The first task was to mend a couple of bikes (a friendly Franco-cyclo-shop was located) and then proceed through many a corn, potato and petit pois field to the St Gobain Forest via the cemetery of Grand Seraucourt where the grave of Victor Ball was located in row F5. Another small wooden cross was laid in memory. The last day took the MONKs from Laon to Reims, visiting on the way another quarry structure that was heavily fought over by both sides during the Battle for the Chemin des Dames. This was called the Caverne-du-Dragon, apparently after the smoke and fire that came out of the German army kitchen about 20m underground. The quarry was filled with many items that soldiers from both sides had carved from bullets, shells and other bits of armament lying around. At one stage the cavern was occupied by both sides with only a single interior wall separating them …… no doubt with the odd Mills bomb being lobbed through the holes in the wall. Then it was down to the river and canal where the route followed along the tow path for many miles right into the centre of Reims. The end of the ride was deemed to be the front door of the incredible cathedral in the city with its fantastic stained glass windows, stonework, carvings and gargoyles. A very fitting finishing point.The distance ridden was 240.8 miles and the sweepstake won by `Capt.` Holmes who was duly invited to buy the drinks for the evening meal, served by a delightful young lady from the Seychelles. Reims, being a university town, stayed open late with packed bars, live music and dancing in the street - including someone that rivaled Peter Jones at his best, if only he had been there … As for all good military campaigns- including this one - there has to be a lot of planning and the reccie trip taken by David/ Carolyn Saunders & David/Sarah Holmes proved that preparation is everything. NORTH KILWORTH IS OVER-RUN BY PIRATES!!
Spotted locally- Pirates, Policemen, and a Major General
Ninety villagers reserved tickets for Pirates of Penzance at Kilworth House Theatre many months ago- when the temperature was several degrees below zero. Luckily Saturday 25th June turned out to be warm and dry, so extra layers of clothing and rugs weren’t needed, although the clouds had deterred many of us from picnic-ing beforehand.Whether you were a Gilbert & Sullivan fan or not before seeing the show, it’s hard to believe anyone wouldn’t enjoy the venue and the spectacle. Well-known songs include – “I am the very model of a modern Major General”,” I am a Pirate King”, and” When a felon’s not engaged in his employment” by the cowardly policemen. Comedy awards should go to the pirate who resembled Mr Bean, and his teddy bear, and to the largest of the sisters who devoured a whole sponge cake in seconds. The arrival behind the trees of an extremely large sailing ship was a real spectacle, and then its hull opened (similar to the door on a cross channel ferry), to reveal the returning pirates. All ended as expected for a G&S production- all the men married all the girls, and they all took part in a big sing -song finale. We are lucky to have this theatre on our doorstep- all we need now is a footpath back across the fields to the village! Sarah Holmes
The Sergeant of Police, Dickon Gough writes:I first came to work at Kilworth House Theatre as a pirate/policeman for its inaugural production of Pirates of Penzance in 2007 and had since longed for the opportunity to return. When approached to undertake the role of the Sergeant for the 5th anniversary of the theatre, there was never any doubt as to my decision. Regardless of the joys of such a role, it was the joy I had when I originally came here that made the decision such an easy one. Kilworth House Theatre is an absolute joy to work in; the setting, the people, the production. All, as my father described it, makes it life affirming. To have the chance to get out of London and to this beautiful shire and entertain so many people on a daily basis is the reason I became an actor. What truly puts it apart though is the welcome we as actors receive from the community when we are here. To be treated with such hospitality and warmth is a wonderful feeling. We spend much of our lives living out of suitcases, so to feel at home is a rare and hugely welcome feeling. And I believe I speak for all the cast and crew when I say that your community is an extraordinarily welcoming one. Whether it be my exemplary landlady Carol Potter, Brian Cook, who so kindly and speedily fixed my housemates car, or Kevin and Jen at the White Lion, you have all ensured our stay has been an amazing one. Indeed, I (and I imagine a large number of the company) would rather our run here lasted for at least another month! We are hugely grateful to all of you for enabling us to have had such an experience. If there is any doubt as to the impact Kilworth House Theatre and the community itself has had on us actors, I will leave you with a final thought. A gent and a lady met last year doing Guys and Dolls. The gent was then offered the chance to come back this year to do Pirates. He accepted. He accepted as it was on his mind to propose to the girl he met here, on the stage where they fell in love, in a setting that was as important to them as no other. Thankfully, she said yes! If that is not enough proof of how deeply affected we are by you all, then I am at loss! With all my heart, thank you and we all hope to see you soon.
