What is the most effective way

    to group students?

    Ability grouping (Homogeneous)

    Heterogeneous grouping

Flexible grouping Cooperative technique (Shallaway 1997)

NIST Counsellors believe that a social pod

of students will be the most successful.

If they are socially comfortable, then

    more learning can happen.

Countless children, of virtually every nationality and from a great variety

of backgrounds, wonder will I have friends? and will I succeed?

NIST is a place where they feel connected to each other and are eager to learn.

As the cultural mixing of todays world increases,

the puzzle just becomes more challenging.

Gone are the days of just counting boys and girls to see if the class isequal. Gone are the days where a student is the label by their passport.

Teachers understand the commonalities these groups

share as well as understand their differences,

so we can use what we have learned for the benefit of all.

    Start of the school year:

We look at the make up of the children

already in the program, and the incoming

students, to work on making cooperative

    learning environments.

No changes will be made without the Class

Placement Teams input. This is in the bestinterest of all students and all classes.

The end goal is what is best for the child.
