Physiotherapy, psychology, and psychiatry. Nurses in the pain clinic are trained to deal with various issues regarding the care of the chronic pain patient. Occupational therapy is available as well. We deal with a wide variety of cases encompassing both central and peripheral pain disorders. The clinic operates 2 days a week and presently has a wait time of 5 years. Trigger point injections, Botox injections (for pain management), various peripheral nerve blocks (greater occipital, lateral femoral cutaneous, etc.)/brachial plexus blocks, facet joint injections, epidural (cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and caudal), IV blocks, stellate ganglion blocks, celiac plexus (cancer) block/lumbar sympathetic block/superior hypogastric plexus block/ganglion Impar Block.

The pain clinic is multidisciplinary. All consultation requests are screened. Priority is given based on urgency stated on consultation request and accompanying information.

The centre has 5 physiatrists (1.5 pediatric, 3.5 adult) who work in an interdisciplinary model, with both inpatient and outpatient programs.

Provincial Tertiary Neurologic Rehabilitation Center.

The Centre is the provincial tertiary neurologic rehabilitation centre for New Brunswick, but also sees pediatric patients from other Atlantic provinces. Patients with diagnoses of neurologic injury or disorder can be referred, and initial assessment by the physiatrist determines the disciplines that will be involved in the patients’ care plan. Patients with pain symptoms as a result of the neurologic diagnoses can be referred to the physiatrists. Physicians who have an urgent patient or who wish to first discuss a potential referral are encouraged to call the centre and ask to speak to one of the physiatrists, who will return their call as soon as possible.

Diagnoses which fall under the centre’s mandate include: spinal cord injury, traumatic and acquired brain injury, complex strokes, neuromuscular and congenital neurologic diseases, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, complex peripheral neuropathies. The centre does not accept referrals for musculoskeletal diagnoses such as neck or back pain, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis.

All manner of peripheral nerve blocks with ultrasound guidance if needed.

Facet joint and sacroiliac joint blocks by interventional radiologist.

Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy through hospital departments.

No easy access to psychology or psychiatry.

Comment: Bookings made through the Pre-admission Clinic. All hospital anesthesiologists accept referrals for chronic pain, but cases are reviewed upon arrival to determine who will see a particular case.

All hospital anesthesiologists are proficient in performing blocks, and these are carried out four days per week.
