NLXL was founded in the Netherlands in November 2010 by Rick and Esther Vintage and is known for the Scrapwood Wallpaper collection, brainchild of designer Piet Hein Eek and Rick Vintage. This collection won the Editor’s award at ICFF New York in 2011 and can be found in the permanent collection of Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt Museum and the Museum for Architecture and Design, both in New York.

NLXL Wallpapers have been featured in the New York Times, Daily News, Country Living, Shelterpop, Remodelista, Core77, Cup of Jo, DesignBoom, HypeBeast, Design*sponge and other publications around the world.

In 2012 NLXL introduced the “Brooklyn Tins” collection for Paris based concept store Merci and “Concrete Wallpaper” by Piet Boon®. Its latest collection, launched in 2013, is “Remixed. Wallpaper by Arthur Slenk”.

NLXL Wallpaper has no repeat. Which means that while the rolls within one style are of course identical, each plank is unique in the Scrapwood Wallpaper collection, each tin is unique in the Brooklyn Tins collection etc..

NLXL’s goal is to become the world’s smallest global company.

Arthur Slenk (1941) found two boxes of handwritten music sheets over twenty years ago, used by an amateur orchestra between 1872 and 1941. The documents had not seen daylight for almost half a century. Carefully, he started examining page upon page, discovering the genesis, the varying pressure of pen upon paper, a cor rected LYYVY��H�[PU`�PUR�Z[HPU�^OLYL�[OL�WLU�OHK�Z[\TISLK�V]LY�H�Ä�IYL��Ä�UNLYWYPU[Z��ZPNUZ�VM�^LHY�PU�[OL�JVYULY�^OLYL�[OL�ZOLL[�^HZ�Å�PWWLK�over – all these traces, suddenly revealing the obscure members of this amateur orchestra.

The sheet music was sorted into seperate envelopes, by subject, then �UHSS`�WHZ[LK��,HJO�KLZPNU�^HZ�JYP[PJHSS`�L_HTPUH[LK��VM[LU�MVSSV^LK�by corrections. The artist worked on it every day. After seven years and 144 designs he considered this gigantic collage completed.

NLXL has selected 8 of these designs for a new wallpaper collection. The result is simply incredible. New state of the art scan techniques have been developed to capture the depth of the paper clippings. ;OL°]PU[HNL�MLLS�VM�[OL�`LSSV^LK�WHWLY�JVTIPULK�^P[O�[OL�OPZ[VY`�behind the sheet music makes it look like a historical document on H°^HSS�

MERCI opened in march 2009 in the arty neighborhood of Haut-Marais in Paris. More than just a retail project, it is a unique place, a destination store with 3 cafés and restaurants as well a very rich programme of exhibitions and scenographies that made the reputation of 4,9*0.1LHU�3\J�*VSVUUH�K»0Z[YPH�VM�4,9*0!�¸0U���� ��4,9*0�ZLSLJ[LK�[OPZ�vintage ceiling tins as a décor concept for the Parisien store. Since the opening, there is no one day whithout seeing a visitor taking pictures VM�[OL�4,9*0�[PU�JV\U[LY�VY�HZRPUN�[V�I\`�P[��;OPZ�WOLUVTLUVU�OHZ�NP]LU�4,9*0�[OL�PKLH�[V�NL[�[VNL[OLY�^P[O�53?3�[V�KLZPNU�HUK�THYRL[�the wallpaper collection Brooklyn Tins.”

Historically, tin ceillings were introduced to North America as an HMMVYKHISL�HS[LYUH[P]L�[V�[OL�L_X\PZP[L�WSHZ[LY�^VYR�\ZLK�PU�,\YVWLHU�homes. It was between 1890 and 1930 that thin rolled tin-plates were being mass-produced. Tin ceilings were traditionally painted white to give the appearance of hand-carved or molded plaster. But, today the irregularity and the aging give all the appeal to this American architecture icon.

NLXL Founder Rick Vintage has a background in interior design. 0U°�����OL�PTWVY[LK�WYLZZLK�[PU�WSH[LZ�MVY�H�YLZ[H\YHU[�WYVQLJ[�PU�[OL�5L[OLYSHUKZ��¸,]LY�ZPUJL�^L�PUZ[HSSLK�[OLZL�[PUZ�0�RUL^�^L�OHK�[V�KV�ZVTL[OPUN�^P[O�[OPZ�ILH\[PM\S�WYVK\J[��4,9*0�PZ�V\Y�RL`�HJJV\U[�in Paris, so we work very close together in marketing our wallpaper collections in Paris. At one of the famous parties during the Paris +LZPNU�>LLR�PU�QHU\HY`������[OL�KLZPNU�[LHT�VM�4,9*0�HZRLK�\Z�PM�we were interested to make a wallpaper collection based on vintage tins. Brooklyn Tins was born. I think the collection shows the pleasure we have had in working together on this project.”

Piet Hein Eek developed a vision on recycling long before it came into fashion. “The scrapwood cupboard from 1990 was my reaction HNHPUZ[�[OL�WYL]HSLU[�JYH]PUN�MVY�Å�H^SLZZULZZ��0�^HZ�^HSRPUN�HYV\UK�in a lumberyard and suddenly realized that old wood looked better than new. We are used to wanting mass products that are perfectly produced and look exactly the same. But I thought that there was space for imperfection. If you make honest furniture with natural materials and it gets old or scratched, it still looks beautiful — its aesthetic value never diminishes. I wanted to show that products that aren’t perfect still can appeal to our sense of aestetic and functionality. I also wanted to design a product that could be made with limited means, material that was abundant. The combination of uncommon material and also uncommon, but simple methods of working became the thread through our work.”

Promo item no.1 is the packaging: all rolls are packed in shrink-wrapped foil in a branded full colour cardboard sleeve. Included are installation instructions in 6 languages, a card with a little note from the designer and a self-adhesive woven brand label.

For in-store display: if you apply the wallpaper to a wall in your store, people will not notice it as “paper”, they will recognize it as real planks on the wall, or real concrete or real tins. For this reason we have developed a promo-kit in order to stimulate sales of the wallpaper. The sample sheets (80 x 48,7 cm) and the sample sticks emphasize that the “wall” is not real. The images on these pages show you how the product is displayed in a clear, easy and fun way.

Our catalogues are 50 x 50 cm, and consist of images of the installed paper, 50 x 50 samples of the actual wallpaper and 2 fold out samples of 50 x 100 cm.

A4 samples are also available, in bulk of 25 samples per style or in an envelope with all sample of each style in a collection. Promotional items are not valid for discount although bulk pricing is available.
