“RADICAL” IS NOT AN ADJECTIVE MEN WANT TO HEAR associated with surgery of their prostate gland. Yet research shows that one in six U.S. men will develop cancer of the prostate and be faced with the possibility of a “radical prostatectomy” to remove it. Besides the “ouch” factor, surgery also puts into play those nerves and muscles associated with bladder control and sexual function.

As 1 of 100 hospitals involved in a national Prostate Cancer Awareness Campaign, Munson Medical Center and area urologists plan an educational event at Munson Community Health Center on Thursday, Oct. 1 at 6 pm in Munson Medical Center’s Conference Room 1. September, during Participants will learn more about prostate health, the signs and symptoms of prostate cancer, and review treatment options for nerve-sparing radical prostatectomies.

“The most important thing for a patient to do is ask his surgeon about his or her outcomes,” said Urologist Michael Harris, M.D., who uses a technique called nerve-sparing radical perineal prostatectomy. “I measure my outcomes scientifically and study them.”

The awareness event will include information on Munson Medical Center’s recently obtained da Vinci® robotic surgical system. Of the 39 da Vinci systems in Michigan, none have been located north of Midland – until now. Munson purchased the da Vinci Si, the most advanced robotic surgical system available.

“Our patients have been asking for this highly publicized technology and have often scheduled procedures downstate because we have not had it available,” said Munson Urologist Jay Starr, M.D., section chief of the urology department. “We responded to our community and now have the absolute latest in robotic technology, superior to older versions of da Vinci found downstate.”

As the surgeon manipulates controls, robotic and computer technologies translate hand, wrist, and finger movements into precise micro-movements of miniaturized instruments on interactive robotic arms. Every surgical maneuver is performed with direct input from the surgeon.

Starr said patients diagnosed with prostate cancer should ask their physician about all their treatment options. Surgery using da Vinci may not be appropriate for certain cases.

“What da Vinci does is give northern Michigan patients the latest technology to have a minimally invasive procedure done when appropriate,” Starr said. “The great thing for my patients is that it is close to home.”

Prostate Cancer Symptoms, DetectionIf prostate cancer is caught in its earliest stages, most men will not

experience symptoms. It may present as a hard nodule or lump in the prostate gland, which can be detected during a self-checking or a physician’s prostate examination. A blood test can also reveal the cancer in its earliest stages. PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, is a protein produced by the prostate gland and shows up at higher levels when a prostate tumor is present.

Some men, however, will experience symptoms that might indicate the presence of prostate cancer, including:

•A need to urinate frequently, especially at night •Difficulty starting urination or holding back urine •Weak or interrupted flow of urine •Painful or burning urination•Difficulty in having an erection•Painful ejaculation•Blood in urine or semen•Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs
