NMPPS NEWSFLASH CO-OPERATION April 2014 NMPPS SCHOOL NEWSLETTER Our NewsFlash is produced by the students of Nelson Mandela Park PS for the students and parents/caregivers of our school community working together to do something. Digital copies of all past issues can be found at: http://schools.tdsb/nelsonmandelpark April 29th 2014 was one of those days that made you proud to be part of Nelson Mandela Park PS. On this day we gathered as a school commu- nity to celebrate the Spirit of Nelson Mandela and commemorate the 20th anniversary of Mandela`s first election victory. That first election lasted 3 days and saw huge line ups as all South African citizens regard- less of the colour of their skin were allowed to vote for the first time. The voting period began on April 27th, 1994 and ended on April 29th, 1994. The final election result gave Nelson Mandela 63% of the vote. This was a huge victory for Mandela, and made him South Africa’s first black president in a country where for decades black people were not allowed to hold political power. After spending 27 years in jail and leading the struggle for freedom in South Africa, Nelson Man- dela finally became the president of South Africa. The strength of Mandela`s conviction, and ability to forgive in the face of such injustice are incred- ible lessons for all of us to observe. In 2014, what can we in Toronto, in the heart of Regent Park learn from these lessons? How can we let Mandela be the inspiration for us to show that we care, and move forward with our school mission to build a “Culture of Caring?” One way we have shown that we care this month is through our yearly Talent Show that was organized by our Music Teacher Ms. Werbitsky and supported by Mr. Bloo. It was a beautiful sight to see stu- dents shine in new and sometimes different ways! A huge congratulations to all of the performers as it is not easy to get in front on an audience and perform. Helen & Mr. Fowler showed that they care through the work they have been doing with their Grade 1 stu- dents to promote careers in Science and Technology. They ran a mock pediatric clinic for refugees that gave the kids in their classes an opportunity to take on the roles of various medical professionals. Jean, Ms. Hough, and all of the other teachers who have been supporting our school garden have dem- onstrated they care about teaching our students ecological literacy, and providing a green space for the kids and families of Regent Park through all of their work in maintaining and expanding our school garden. I wish to thank everybody involved for all of their efforts in helping to make our school a more beautiful space by keeping our garden healthy and well! All of our coaches have shown they care about the athletic development of our students through the hours of coaching they have done with our students this spring in soc- cer, and track and field. I know our students and families are very appreciative of the extra time that Ms. LaFontaine has given in coaching girls soccer. Every student gets ONE shirt free !

Mr. Alok and Mr. Nano have done the same with our boys soccer teams. Mr. Adams, Mr. Bailey and Ms. Cesta have put much effort into helping develop the track skills of our students. Also, Ms. Cooper and Mr. Alok have been coaching track with our Primary/ Junior students. I have cited a few out of the many examples of our staff and students coming together to show that they care! Ms. Julie and the Newsflash Club care about sharing the wonderful things that occur at our school and we are very lucky that they take the time every month to put our Newsflash together. We still have 2 full months of school and all sorts of future opportunities to show that we care and make our school the best possible place that it can be! Sincerely,Mr. Kandankery Mr. MorganPrincipal Vice-Principal

Pan Fest! By Makayla Chambers On Monday May 14,2014 Room 316 went to Panfest at the Bickford Centre. Some of us played the steelpan and the rest of the class was in the audience. The place and the people from the other schools were very nice. The songs that the people from other schools played was nice, the songs were long and soft. The place we went to had a computer to show people videos. The videos had songs, and the songs were like the ones you hear on the ra-dio. Before we started to play our selection, we did O’Canada, then we started the Festival. The first school to go was Nelson Mandela Park PS!!!!! The song we played was “In The Jungle” from The Lion King. We had fun then we had even more fun when “ESP”came on stage. The guy was so cool - he put some songs on and we all sang to them . Then he played his songs and Miss S. and Layla went crazy and danced. The people who performed were great. Hope you liked it!

TUSCBy: Ali A. and Brandon On Tuesday, April 8, 2014, Room 325 went to the To-ronto Urban Study Centre located at Danforth Tech (a high school). At TUSC, we had to go on searches for waypoints placed by the TUSC at random loca-tions. We were given some equipment such as a Garmin GPS, a camera, a chart containing the fig-ures that we needed to find at the waypoints and a paper to record the figures we found. After we found all the figures and recorded them (that took a while), we headed back to our base at TUSC and when we were racing back to TUSC we thought we were the first ones and on the way we saw another team by the door, we did not make it but we were happy that we were second.

It was lunchtime and after we ate our lunch we got on to mak-ing our maps and it got pretty weird like the time the program closed on us but we got lucky because we had saved it but some work was not saved and we had to redo it. Then it was time to say thank you . . .Thank You TUSC for giving us a great time!

April showers bring .......May flowers By: Manahil and Safiya, Gr. 4Today we are going to talk all about spring. Safiya interviewed Mr. Adams and Manahil interviewed some students in Grade 4. Interviewing Grade 4Q.Why do you want spring to come? A. I want spring because we can play sports outside. Q.Why does spring have flowers? A. I think that flowers come because there might be seeds in the dirt.

Interviewing Mr. AdamsQ: Why do you want spring?A: Our winter season lasted too long. We are looking forward to spring.Q: Will you take your class outside?A: Yes, however we also take the students outside for skating to appreciate Canadian winter.Q: Are you a fan of spring? Why or why not?A: Yes, spring gives everyone a chance to smell the flowers, do some spring cleaning of our homes and look forward to the nice weather.Q: Do you know where the word spring comes from?A: The season after winter, when plants begin to grow.

What’s happening in the garden? There are 15 classes planting seeds for our school garden this year! We hope to have pumpkins, zuc-chini, beans, beets, potatoes and lots of herbs as well as many flowers growing. The garden club begins May 22 and these students will help prepare the garden, plant the seedlings and tend the plants as they grow. Some students will be meeting at lunch instead of after school with Ms Hough and Mr. Bailey to make some signs for our garden.Greenwood College is helping us make some more raised gardens this year and we will start that work soon. This will allow for more space for plants from the parenting center, the day care and the commu-nity.You are all welcome to be in the garden space as long as you are respectful to the plants and don’t harm them in anyway. If you see anyone being disrespectful be sure to let an adult know so we can keep our garden healthy and thriving.

Jump Rope for HeartWe know that active kids are better learners. Supporting kids’ health for more than thir-ty years, the Heart and Stroke Foundation encourages kids to get active while they col-lect pledges for heart disease and stroke research. This year, our school is embarking on this journey filled with simple challenges in order to raise money for this worthy cause and to teach our students the benefits of being active and healthy. On Friday May 23rd at 9:30 we will be holding a school-wide skip-a-thon in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The students from grades K-8 will skip and have fun for 20 minutes on the school field and playground. All students will receive a free skipping rope after the event. Parents, caregivers and family members are welcome and encouraged to join us! For more infor-mation you can go online to JumpRopeForHeart.ca or HoopsForHeart.ca Thank you for supporting us to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. It will be a jumpcredible journey.

EarthBy Melyk, Gr. 6The Earth’s surface is divid-ed into several tectonic plates that migrate across the surface over periods of many millions of years. Over 70% of Earth’s surface is covered with water, with the remainder consisting of continents and islands. The Earth’s poles are mostly covered with ice that is the solid ice of the Antarctic ice sheet and the sea ice that is the polar ice packs. The planet’s interior remains active, with a solid iron inner core, a liquid outer core that generates the magnetic field, and a thick layer of relatively solid mantle. The age of the Earth is 4.54 billion years.

Our trip to the ROM… By: Mariam & Masrid, Gr 1Today we went to the museum. Outside we wait-ed for the street-car. It took us to a subway station. We took a train to the museum. We looked at the dinosaur bones and we went in a cave. We got to hold dinosaur bones and dinosaur poop. We got to hold a dinosaur plastic egg and at the end we got to dig for dinosaur bones. Then it was time to come back to school. It was a great fieldtrip!

NMPPS MEDICAL CLINICBy: Nahid and Hamza and Ms. Yasmin, Gr. 1Nelson Mandela Park P.S. had its first Refugee Health Clinic. The grade 1’s in Mr. Fowler’s and Helen’s classes became doctors and treated the grade 6 and

8 students. The grade 1 students trained in a mini med-school for several months to be able to handle diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and sports inju-ries. We even learned about mental health and had treatment options such as yoga therapy, spontane-ous art, and proper nutrition. With a generous dona-tion from Mr. Kandankery, we hope to treat many others in the future. “We had to practice a lot before

the pa-tients came,” says Dr. Na-hid. Dr. Hamza says, “We had a lot of fun!”

SoccerSoccer at NMPPS is becoming by far the most popular sport. Pres-ently there are three teams: Junior boys, Senior girls, and Senior boys. Try booking time on the field. With games and practices, we are making good use of it. We could use more teachers and parents to help out.Soon, our teams will have uniforms with numbers, socks, shorts - the whole thing! It will be the first time for Mandela’s soccer teams to have this! The girls in the soccer team played a wonderful game in their first friendly game against Winchester P.S. They showed coop-eration, worked as a team, and had lots of fun. It was amazing to see how great they were. However, un-fortunately they lost 4 to 0. Still, they never gave up or lost their hope which will help them when they play in their tournament on May 9th. Good luck to the girls soccer team! Go Panthers Go!The boys soccer team is having a great season and have so far tied two games and lost one. They play Norway Public School on May 6th on our field after school. If we win this one, we go on to the playoffs! Come out and cheer for the home team!!

The world cup starts on June 12, 2014 and ends on July 13, 2014. Soccer players have fans because the fans like their style of playing or it’s your favourite coun-try, so you cheer for them. These are the most liked teams in our opinion: Argentina, Portugal, Brazil, Spain, England.

Talent ShowMohamed, Sakeeb, and Isam were in the Talent Show. They are all in room 128. They drummed and played the pia-no. The boys said that they felt scared and excited. They de-cided to be in the Talent Show because they got told that they were really good at playing the piano and drums. Riham also got interviewed. She is in room 214. She played the piano and sang. Riham wanted to be in the Talent Show because she wanted people to see her talent. By Veda Gr. 4The way it felt to be in front of all those people at the Talent Show was the greatest feeling in the world to me because I got to show the whole school the amazing talent I have. I sang the song Waving Flag by K’naan. A few days before the talent show, I sent K’naan a letter asking him to come and see some of the amazing talent we have here at Nelson Mandela Park Public School. I sang Waving Flag because, in the song, it is saying that when K’naan was younger he had to go through all this discrimination and he sang about going to war and people making promises to him and not keep-ing them. Sometimes I feel that way. That is why that song is so important to me. By Kayla Gr. 5
