Member of the MonthName: Dave SpoonerAge: 43Height: 5ft 10.5inWeight: 12.5 stone

When you joined club?2008

When and why did you take up running?I entered Sandringham 10km in 2007 to lose weight and get fit after 20 years of enjoying a very unhealthy lifestyle. Finished it in about 72 minutes and caught the bug.

Most satisfying performance?Abingdon Marathon in 2014 – not my best time but did my one negative split in a marathon

Page 3: NNBR Newsletter December 2015 Last Issuennbr.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2015/12/12.15_News.pdf · NNBR NEWSLETTER 4 Holt 10K Report Monday, 09 November 2015 The sun shone brightly on

NNBR NEWSLETTER 3

Favourite tips / quotes? If you want to improve, get a coach.

Favourite training route / race?Probably Bacton Woods – I love running round there.

Worst training route / race?So many to mention – South Downs Way 50 was a really miserable day….

Clothing / Equipment used whilst running?Er, shorts and a t-shirt? You don’t need much, that’s one of the best things about running. I have a belt for carrying water bottles that I take on any run over an hour.

Biggest achievements?The Anglian Triathlon 2014

Future targets?Next target is Manchester Marathon 2015

Holt 10K ReportMonday, 09 November 2015

The sun shone brightly on a record entry at the Bakers and Larners of Holt 10k. An unprecedented 403 runners from all over the country entered the increasingly popular race this year.

Race Director Ross Haddow was delighted with both the high entry and the innovation of chip timing from Reepham company Total Race Timing, which meant that race times and results were available soon after the race finished.

Mike Baker from Bakers and Larners of Holt, who have kindly sponsored the event for several years, was also thrilled with the day and was on hand to present prizes afterwards in Gresham School’s main sports hall.

The race was marshalled by around 50 members of North Norfolk Beach Runners but such is the strength of the Cromer club that 22 members of the club were also on the start line and filled three of the top five places as well.

The race was won by Ipswich’s Robert Chenery, closely followed by Beach Runner Chris Merrylees whose time of 34:49 secured him 1st place in the 35-49 category.

NNBR NEWSLETTER 5

Darren Neale finished strongly to take fourth place and 2nd prize in the 35-49 age group and Tony Witmond ran an amazing personal best time of 36:25 to finish 5th and win the 45-49 1st prize.

George Gay was the only other Beach Runner to break 40 minutes but with his father, John Gay, only a minute behind he may not have regarded his time of 39:37 for 33rd place as his finest run of the season.

John Cousins went well to record 40:23 and Eddie Carman looked to be in fine form as he clocked 43:19 for 81st place, just ahead of the first Lady Beach Runner, Emily Haughan.

Thirteen other members of the club completed the scenic 10k circuit which takes in Gresham’s School grounds, part of the Kelling Estate and much of Salhouse Heath. They included Neil Bunnage, Sam Weller, Derek Sadler, Tom Wray, Ivan Allen and Craig Robinson for the men and Maria Greaves, Susan Ilsley, Linda Melton, Ellen Tatum and Donna Billman for the ladies.

Special mention should go to two of the club’s senior runners, Brenda Kinch who at the age of 70 left 100 runners trailing in her wake and 74 year old Mike Marshall who finished ahead of 60 much younger competitors.

Brenda Kinch – Athletics Norfolk Female Road Runner of the Year 2015For the second year running Brenda Kinch of the North Norfolk Beach Runners was awarded the prestigious Athletics Norfolk Female Road Runner of the Year 2015 at the Leathes Prior Grand Prix Award ceremony on Saturday evening in Norwich. The cup is engraved with the winner’s name along with a replica cup to keep: there is also a similar male award. The award is calculated on the results of the 4 County Championships – 5K, 10K, 10 Mile & Half Marathon plus the Postal Marathon. The runner MUST have run a minimum 3 of the 5 races and the results are then calculated on the World Masters Athletics, Age Graded calculator. The best 3 results are taken and averaged, and the winner is the individual with the highest age graded percentage.

NNBR NEWSLETTER 7

Leathes Prior Grand Prix Award CeremonyThis year for the Leathes Prior Grand Prix Award ceremony the committee decided to have a presentation evening at The Assembly Rooms in Norwich rather than give out the prizes at the New Years Day 10K. Food was served as pots and shots; this consisted of 5 different main courses served in small pots and 3 desserts served in glass shots. The food was excellent with the choice ranging from Indian curry to fish and chips and cheesecake to zabaglione. Three Beach Runners picked up their awards, engraved silver plates and medals. The Leathes Prior Grand Prix is a series of 10 races over different distances throughout the year and points are awarded depending on finishing position within age group. Linda Melton picked up a bronze in the 55 to 59 category and Brenda Kinch a bronze in the 65+ category. As there is no Norfolk Athletics Marathon, runners can submit results from any marathon they have run for the Norfolk Postal Marathon awards. Paul Muffet was awarded the gold in the 55-59 category in a time of 3:25:13 and Brenda Kinch a bronze in the 65+ category for her time of 4:21:32, both ran the Virgin London Marathon. Jamie Seamark, Hugh Brown, Ross Haddow, Jim Hayes and Charlotte Neale also won postal marathon medals. After the award ceremony there was a disco and everybody enjoyed the excellent evening. Next year’s presentation will be on Friday 18 November so mark the date in your diary.
