2014 HigHligHts of our life

Dear People of Christ Church and Our Friends,What’s your thing? We all have something, perhaps even two things that are ours; that thing that we stand for, that thing that drives us or focuses our heart and our mind. Innovation, efficiency, beauty, art and creativity, completion, or success (however you define it); and the list goes on and on. And while we might like any number of these things, at the end of the day only one or two will really, truly, draw us in and drive us onward. This question ought to be asked of any community as well. What is our thing? Why are we here? What draws us in and gathers us together? It is easy, of course, when we ask such questions to get distracted by all the activity of life, all the things that we do, as if the activity itself is the purpose and the end. We know, of course, that this is not so; activity does not equal purpose, but the danger of their confusion is there all the same. This is especially true when we undertake such things as an annual report. It’s easy in the pages that follow to capture what we have done, and to tell of all the activities that have demanded our time and attention, but that ought not suffice. Through it all we must keep our eye on the purpose of it all, what it is that has drawn us in and gathered us together. And so, with a bit of trepidation, it gives me great pleasure to present the 2014 Christ Church Annual Report. The pages that follow will attempt to capture not only the myriad of activities and ministries that we conduct as a Christian community, but the myriad ways that we strive together to provide to visitors and old friends alike, a transforming encounter with God, for that is our one thing– to bring God and people together. And so as we begin a new year in ministry here in Grosse Pointe, I will continue my prayer for you– that your life may continue to be shaped and transformed by your encounter with God here, within these walls and within the embrace of this community of faith, at Christ Church Grosse Pointe.

With affection and every blessing,

The Rev’d Andrew Van Culin, Rector

2014 senior WArden

Dear Friends,The year 2014 has been a whirlwind of change and refocus as we moved forward in our first full year guided by the leadership of our tenth Rector, Drew. We’ve experienced challenges; events and opportunities were not always what they had been in years past. There were disappointments for some when certain expectations, whether voiced or assumed, were not met with the speed desired or outcome anticipated. However, we also completed some major tasks and continue with others that better position us for our future growth. These accomplishments need to be celebrated and we need to maintain our drive to move forward. In fall of 2013 the Vestry approved the 2014 Resource Plan with a fundamental goal to support the growth of staff to develop

and lead ministry and management. To produce the exceptional programming and adminis-tration expected and deserved by this parish, we needed to attract, identify and hire talented individuals. A careful and deliberate process resulted in the addition of committed individuals including James Gray (Worship Coordinator), Christian Hansen (Child, Youth and Family Formation), Tripp Kennedy (Assistant Organist), Diane Ward (Finance and Administration), and Lynne Wayne (Communications). To support our expanded worship life and pastoral care, we also welcomed the Rev. Robert Hart as Assisting and Interim Associate Priest. Efforts continued in the fall with the work to attract a vibrant Curate and Associate Priest. And even throughout the busy Advent and Christmas season, the search is ongoing to identify a new Facilities Director after the retirement of our beloved Michael Fournier. In parallel with the expansion of our staff, the Buildings and Grounds group, Vestry, and parish addressed our clergy housing position. Recognizing the extent of repairs and improvements needed to our parsonage on Grand Marais and the current market conditions, we moved forward with the preparations of Grand Marais for sale. At the same time we located a new parsonage opportunity on Neff Road in Grosse Pointe City. The resounding approval by the parish at our Special Parish Meeting in June confirmed the excitement and vision of the parish to be ready to use clergy housing to further our ministry. By July 31, we successfully closed both transactions and eagerly looked forward to using the Radnor Circle and Neff Road properties in new and creative ways.Guided by the unflagging energy of our Treasurer Lynne Cameron, the business office successfully negotiated the change to a new chart of accounts and the completion of an official audit for 2012 and a review for 2013. We are now using a new coordinated account-ing system, balance sheet, and budgetary process that reflect all fiscal business of the church. The work by Lynne, the Finance group lead by Butch Wardwell, Drew, and now Diane was exemplary and their dedication to this grueling task will serve us well in the years to come. Our Formation life continues to grow. Building on the firm foundation of the countless volunteers lead by Tracey Torosian and Nancy Osborn through August, Christian Hansen has re-energized our Child,

Mary trost

We must never forget that our passions come

from our collective desire to do good, to live

into the challenges of being human and

yet strive to be better.

Youth and Family Ministries. We all continue to smile as we watch the growing numbers of children excitedly trail after Christian for Gospel readings, Children’s Chapel, Sunday School, youth events, mission trip planning, family events, and more. The hunger for youth and adult Confirmation is being fed with a full year of classes to foster faith development under the guidance of Christian, Fr. Bob and Fr. Drew. Our Rector’s Forums have now developed into a fuller schedule of Sunday events including those specific to the study of liturgy, an appre-ciation for our Detroit community, and the joys of fellowship.

We came together in increasing numbers for the hallmarks of our Christian year- Holy Week, Easter, Pentecost, Advent and Christmas. Our Christmas Lessons and Carols service was overflowing with congregants and visitors joined together in anticipation of Christmas joy. We came together on Wednesday evenings in fellowship, an intergenerational mix filled with laughter, full bellies, and a sense of fun before we moved off to our individual activities. We came together to share our love of music, be it in worship or as our gift to our greater community. We came together to host our 30th Annual Antiques Show and our festive Gifts and Greens, not only showcasing our beautiful parish but also working together to support ministry beyond our walls.Throughout October and November, we engaged in healthy discussion and debate about the resources needed to sustain our new programming, to complete our staffing needs, and to direct our resources to build our future. The response and attendance at Stewardship receptions, an opportu-nity to commune and re-commit to our shared vision was heartening. And so at its November meeting, the Vestry adopted a bold $2.5 million 2015 Resource Plan which challenges all to increase personal pledging and invests available funds to meet our goals. We are responding…. The 2014 fiscal year ended with pledged support greater than what was reflected in the 2014 Resource Plan. And the early response to our 2015 goals is one of increased individual commitment with an average increase of almost $300 per pledge. Our work has not been without challenges, moments of doubt, and difference of opinion and it will continue to be so. But those opportunities have been and will be driven by our shared sense of love for Christ Church. We must never forget that our passions come from our collective desire to do good, to live into the challenges of being human and yet strive to be better. Now more than ever I remain grateful for the devotion and courage of so many to join together to move ahead, be they our Rector Drew, every member of the Vestry, our countless volunteers, or the individuals in commu-nal prayer in worship. And I eagerly look forward to our shared experiences as we grow in our relationship with God and one with another.Yours in love and faith, Mary Trost

2014 Junior WArden

John snyderThe Junior Warden at Christ Church has typically overseen and worked with the Parish Resources Committees, that is, Buildings and Grounds, Finance, Investment, and Stewardship. He/she works closely with the Senior Warden and of course the Rector. The burden of this office has been considerably lightened with the very capable leadership of our Senior Warden for the past year, Mary Trost, and naturally our energetic and visionary Rector. We three meet weekly to discuss the details of daily parish life, to plan the monthly Vestry meetings, and to encourage involvement of each Vestry member and many in the congregation into the life of this great parish. The secular aspects of the life of Christ Church are in good hands with the able staff support Fr. Drew has hired in the Director of Parish Resources, Diane Ward. She has made my job, and that of many on the Vestry, one of oversight and advice rather than hands

on management. The Finance Committee’s work on the Resource Plan (read Budget) has been one of review without nit-picking each and every line of the Plan. While it has taken longer than we anticipated to have all of the personnel in place, now that they are here, we are now blessed with very capable leadership and support to the Rector, and Fr. Drew knows this, allowing him to do the work he was called to do…carry out the Vision for Christ Church in a very careful, planned way. We have begun a “policy review” guiding the Parish in its budgeting and investment activities for the Endowment and the Reserve Funds. We have a much clearer picture of the financial state of the Parish, and the state we are in. We are in a good state, buttressed by very positive investment performance in our Endowment and Resource assets. Our Treasurer will report separately on the “numbers”, but they are very positive and reflect growing support from the Congregation at large. The real estate issues the Church dealt with this past year have us in a very good position for the future. We anticipate being better stewards of our real and tangible assets, so that the clergy occupying the properties can be proud of their own situations. The Junior Warden attended, with others, the annual Diocesan Convention held in late October. While the Convention was conventional to my mind, there was one significant resolution voted upon, that being Resolution 7– “Solutions to Gun Violence”, submitted by the CCGP Task Force on Gun Violence. An article about the Resolution appeared in the Detroit Free Press on Monday, November 3, which this Warden felt was a little dramatic and not really accurate reporting. (See the online article at: http://www.freep.com/story/news/local/2014/11/03/episcopal-church-michigan-gun-resolution/18382335/) It was great to have our Task Force represented there. The Junior Warden has been able to bring concerns conveyed to him by members of the congregations to the Rector and staff. And he has helped verbalize and put into practice the vision for Christ Church. Having been at many of the myriad services offered at Christ Church, both traditional (Saturday/Sunday) and new (weekday) as well as the memorial services (funerals and baptisms), I find that they speak to the spiritual needs of the participants, the congregation and the formation desires of us all. I have been fed emotionally and physically with each prayer, each eucharist, each reflection our clergy staff offer. When I accepted the Vestry’s call and nomination to serve as Junior Warden, it had been with some trepidation. I needn’t have feared, but rather rejoice and continue to do so in this work and in the opportunity and privilege to serve you, the whole of Christ Church. u

Annual Meeting 2015 8

ReportThe reverend Andrew Van Culin, rectorPurpose: At the heart of our common life together stands our common worship. As a community, we gather throughout the week to worship and pray, offering ourselves in common voice to God. In additional to our principal worship services on Sunday morning, a daily commitment to worship is maintained in Saint Margaret’s Chapel with weekday services of Morning and Evening Prayer, and the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on Wednesday evenings. Ministries: AcolytesAltar GuildEucharistic MinistersFlower Guild

GreetersLectorsUshersVergers

People Served: In addition to our weekday services, over 23,000 people worshipped at one of the 325 Sunday and special services held at Christ Church. Additionally, our Evensong and Special Evening Services provided nearly 2,500 people the opportunity for quiet reflection in the Anglican choral tradition.Acknowledgments and Thank You: Worship at Christ Church would be nearly impossible without the countless volunteers that offer their time to support our worship services. From the Altar Guild to the Vergers, Acolytes and Ushers, Lectors and Intercessors, Greeters and Flower Guild, the number of volunteers on a Sunday and throughout the year is staggering. Currently, nearly 100 people volunteer in the critical worship ministries– at least 25 of whom are volunteering on any given Sunday. Two volunteers, however, need special recognition – Candy Sweeny and Lynnette Iannace. As Flower Guild Director, Candy has marvelously overseen the preparation of flowers for all of our worship services, often quietly arranging flowers on her own.

nnuala Report

Similarly, Lynnette, as Director of the Altar Guild, has expertly coordinated the Altar Guild preparations for all of our worship services for several years. In additional to coordinating calendars and preparing new members, Lynnette often comes in unscheduled to lend a hand to her excellent team. 2014 Highlights: •THE FLOWER GUILD: Under the exceptional leadership

of Candy Sweeny, the flower guild continues to provide countless floral arrangements of exceptional beauty to enhance our worship experience. Arrangements are regularly provided for the High Altar, Saint Margaret’s Chapel, and the Narthex.

•THE DAILY OFFICE: The Daily Office has found a small, committed, core community that gathers regularly throughout the week, especially for Morning Prayer. These simple said services continue to provide our community a quiet opportunity for reflection, reformation, and re-connection with one another and with God in our lives.

•EUCHARISTIC MINISTER TRAINING: Fr. Bob Hart led a Eucharistic Ministry Training for 20 this fall, providing new and seasoned Eucharistic Ministers a good refresher in this important ministry.

•WORSHIP COORDINATOR: The addition of James Gray as Worship Coordinator has improved our preparation for worship by supporting our worship ministers (professional and volunteer) with needed information, coordination, and guidance.

2015 Priorities: In 2015 we will continue our pursuit of excellence in worship with increased attention to our preparation and volunteer training. To Volunteer: If you are interested in volunteering with any of our worship ministries, please contact James Gray ([email protected]) or any of the Christ Church clergy.

of Bruce Birgbauer, we have organized a four-part series looking at the Detroit renaissance through four key lenses: Education, Public Finance and Bankruptcy, Public Safety, and Economic Redevelopment. In the fall of 2014 we were grateful to host Ms. Tanya Allen (CEO of the Skillman Foundation), and Judge Rosen at the Rector’s Forum. This spring we look forward to hearing from Chief James Craig (Police Chief, Detroit Police Department), and Matt Cullen as they continue the conversation.

•THE CATECHUMENATE: Fr. Drew has introduced a 30-week formation program for Adult Baptism, Reception, or Confirmation. This foundational course explores the fundamentals of our faith as we explore the Bible, our Anglican heritage, and the practices of faithful living.

•THE SPIRITUALITY CENTER: The Spirituality Center continues under the leadership of Fr. Ron Spann.

2015 Priorities: In 2015, we will look to expanding our adult formation on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings. To Volunteer: If you are interested in participating in a class, or perhaps teaching a class, please contact MaryAnn DeAngelo ([email protected]) or any of the Christ Church clergy.

With our series of concerts and special services, Soaring Sounds in a Sacred Space, the Christ Church choirs have offered 19 evensongs, a Requiem mass, Advent and Epiphany Processions, and Christmas and Easter Lessons and Carols. The series has also presented nine concerts this past year involving the Christ Church Chorale, the Christ Church Schola, and guest musicians from the surrounding area and beyond. In addition, this past season we continued our festive liturgies on the Feast of the Presentation, the Feast of the Annunciation, the Feast of the Ascension, and Antiques Show weekend. The Choir of Men and Boys traveled for 15 days to England and Wales this past year and performed nine services in Exeter Cathedral, Wells Cathedral, Bristol Cathedral, Bangor Cathedral, St. David’s Cathedral, and Brecon Cathedral. In the spring, we formed the Music Advisory Committee which is made up of representative choir parents, a profes-sional singer, the Antiques Show Chairs, the Music Events Coordinator, and the Worship Coordinator. The principal function of the MAC is to facilitate communication to and from constituents within the music program and to allow for visioning and the floating of ideas as we continue to improve and expand our music program. The 30th annual Antiques Show occurred May 30-June 1, 2014. The show offered beautiful antiques from more than 30 dealers from around the country and featured Antiques Evaluation Days, a continental breakfast and behind-the-scenes show tours as well as lectures by Dr. Kenneth Myers and Curt DiCamillo. Revenue was generated through advertising, a silent auction, parties, special events and ticket sales. The net profit for the Show was over $65,000 which was allocated to the Music and Outreach Ministries per Vestry direction.

scott Hanoin, director of Music and organistIn June, we welcomed 19 new choristers into the program (nine boys and ten girls) and began the fall season with 22 boys and 23 girls. At the conclusion of the program year, the choirs recorded a new CD entitled “On Christmas Night” that was later released in Advent. In July, Fr. Drew announced the hiring of Dexter Kennedy as our new Assistant Organist. Fr. Drew also announced the appointment of Joseph Daniel to the newly created honorary position of Artist in Residence. 2015 Priorities: Our principal thrust for the years to come will be the recruitment of girls and boys to the choirs. In addition to adding choristers to fill the available slots in the choirs, we look for girls and boys with a hearty appetite for singing and a level of talent and commitment appropriate to the musical rigors of the Christ Church music program. In addition, we will continue to offer programs during the coming year which look to energize our current membership roster as well as encourage visitors to Christ Church. Through our rigorous advertising with our local classical radio station, WRCJ, and through social networking sites and local media, we have reached an ever-growing market of interested patrons in southeastern Michigan. We have seen the positive results in our attendance at special services and concerts as we welcome more and more visitors to Christ Church. In 2015, the Antiques Show will undergo a re-branding process during which we will introduce, “The Antiques, Garden, and Design Show at Christ Church celebrating its 31st year.” We also will look to increase staff support and leadership for financial accounting, communications, and facilities.Acknowledgment and Thank You: Thank you to all of those who sing in the choirs, the families and friends who drive our choristers to rehearsals and services, those who serve on the Music Advisory Committee, the ushers and greeters that serve during concerts and special services, our pledging families and concert patrons who donate to and attend the events on the Soaring Sounds in a Sacred Space series.Contact: Scott Hanoian, Director of Music and Organist313.885-4841x102•Fax:[email protected]
