For years, L&T Switchgear was allabout products that protected andcontrolled power in industriesand at arms. Our products did their jobso well that they became market leaders.Recently, the leader has turned its gazetowards a new rontier. Its a rontierthat is close to home - in act it is homeitsel , and encompasses commercialbuildings in its sweep.

L&Ts venture into a domain thatis re erred to as Building Electricalsis in pace with the quiet revolutionthat is trans orming the application o electricity in domestic and commercialapplications. Until a ew years agoelectricity was about having tube-lights and ans in the house. Not anylonger. Today we demand more romelectricity. We want com ort, sa ety, energy management & conservation,

communication, quality and innovation.Buildings are no more structures

o concrete that hold o ces andresidences. They are intelligent entitiesthat can be commanded to per orma variety o unctions using a host o modern electronics applications.

While we shop in malls, dine in ancyrestaurants, experience the com ort o our houses and o ces, what doesnt

cross our minds is that all this is madepossible through some state-o -the-arttechnologies and automation systems. And L&T has a role in the trans ormationthat these new-age technologies arebringing about.

altogether. And the pace at which L&Thas created a space or itsel in thissegment, in the short span o time it hasbeen in it, is exemplary.

It has just been a little more thana year and-a-hal since L&T decidedto step into the glitzy, hi-tech worldo Building and Home Automationproducts. The rst project, using L&TsBuilding Automation products, was

undertaken in 2008 and today, L&Tprovides automation solutions to malls, commercial o ce complexes, hotels, hospitals, and celebrity residences.

    Building AutomationBuilding automation systems are

or institutional and commercialestablishments. L&T has created its ownbrand o building automation products.

The USP o L&Ts products is that theyollow open architecture and can be

easily integrated into other systems.Other distinctive pluses are beingsuited or Indian conditions and beingthe best-in-class in technology anduser riendliness.

Building automation systems can beurther broken down into categories that

add to convenience, com ort, energy

    Automation Implies

Energy Efciency: Automation is anintegral part o green buildings. Zonecontrolled air-conditioning, lightcontrols that use presence detectorsor motion sensors, energy auditing tomonitor energy usage and re-distributeenergy loads, are just some o themany applications that can make abuilding, commercial or residential, more energy e cient.

Com ort: With an intelligent houseone may orget to switch o the lightsor the air conditioning with no harm

done. Motion sensors controllinglights, a push o a button that sprinklesthe garden with water and turns onthe outdoor lights, a home theatrethat seamlessly integrates lighting, projection screen deployment, surround sound control, curtains, etcthere is not much that cannotbe automated with the right systemsin place. Discrete touch screens make

    switch-cluttered walls a thing o past.

Sa ety: Its reassuring to know that allelectrical appliances, and water andgas supply can be switched o with just the push o a button as one leaveshome or, say, a vacation. Whats evenmore assuring are the sa ety checksthat come as part o the package. Thesystem runs a presence simulationroutine creating an occupiedappearance during the residentsabsence. Should an uninvited visitorstill manage to break in, the rightsystems can activate all necessaryprotective actions in cooperation

with the integrated burglar alarm.Even rom a distant location one canhave a look at the recorded cameraimages and alert emergency services i needed. Houses can also be organisedin groups to be monitored over theinternet rom remote sites.

Centralised Control: The di erentunctions controlled automation

systems are intelligently linked toeach other. For instance, opening thewindow will automatically shut downthe heating or the air-conditioning.When leaving premises, a simplepush o a button will put out lights, lower the central heating, controlthe shutters, stop the CD player andactivate the security system.

Usability: Each o the controls likepush buttons and touch screens arelogically built-up with every unctioneasily accessed and clearly displayed. So, there could easily be a scenariowhere one draws the curtains on the

windows using the TV remote controlwhile watching news.

Design: For a balanced interior, push buttons, touch panels andtouch screens are considered to beaesthetically more appealing. Thesecan also be customised, dependingupon the users taste and the dcor o the place.

e ciency and sa ety. These includeHVAC Controls Building ManagementSystems (BMS), Energy ManagementSystems (EMS), CCTV, Fire Detection &Alarm Systems (FDAS), Access ControlSystems, and Lighting Controls.

BMS or HVAC controls ensuregreater convenience, com ort, energye ciency and coordination with therest o the building utilities or various

unctions e.g. temperature control; EMSis about ensuring improved qualityo power and energy e ciency. Thisis achieved through Energy Auditors,a web-based tool that helps monitorand re-distribute energy loads; CCTV,as we all know, provides security and

sa ety o public places, buildings andenterprises, through surveillance. Theseare becoming increasingly relevant inthe current times; sa ety rom re is acritical and mandatory aspect or allhigh-rise buildings. Fast action, easyintegration, simultaneous alarms toagencies and de-activation/activationo desired areas in a building orm verycrucial aspects o FDAS; ACS allowauthorised personnel and disallowunauthorised ones rom accessing thepremises. L&Ts o ering comes witha two-tier architecture that gives aneco- riendly option to access controlby directly connecting the addressablereaders to the central controller, thus

eliminating the need or secondarycontrollers; Lighting Controls is the nalBA vertical. Other than dimming andcolour mixing, lighting controls alsoinclude presence detectors that orm avery simple energy e ciency solution.

All building automation productsrom L&T use state-o -the-art

technologies and compete globally withworld leaders in the space. The keyelement o L&Ts products is that they

t into the highly scalable and uture-proo architecture known as L&TArchitecture or Building Automation(LTAB), allowing clients to add oneach vertical as per their need andthen integrate it all with one unitingopen protocol Integrated BuildingManagement System (IBMS).

Home AutomationHome Automation is an emerging areao automation, which is expandingexponentially. Smartly designedhomes are the order o the day. With increase in the net worth o individuals, home automation isexpected to see a phenomenal growth

in the coming years.Home automation systems are orresidences and broadly include lightingcontrols; curtain control, projectioncontrol and other motor-based controls;access/ sa ety applications like videodoor phone, alarms or smoke, glass-break, burglar, etc; integration o AC, multi-zone AV, etc; and controlthrough mobile phones/ PDAs (i-Phone,i-PAD), etc.

Shoppers Stop Managing Energy At Shoppers Stop, one o the largest shopping outlets, a wide array o items o regular use and consumption are brought together under one roo . Electricityrequirements are high. The ocus has, there ore, always been on e ective powerutilisation and reduced energy consumption, by eliminating watt wastage atevery point o distribution. Most o the load was single/three phase, causing phaseimbalance. Also, there were power actor concerns at quite a ew locations. Allthis was corrected in just about 1-2 months by using the PowerMan application, installed by L&Ts authorised ISP M/s Rasan that resulted in 3-4% saving.

With L&Ts PowerMan, it is easy to identi y energy wastage, compare energyconsumption and take corrective action. Energy consumption can bebenchmarked, and consumption at each store can be known. In addition, targetscan be set or each o the outlets and bills can be generated or the tenants. Green Buildings The Need o the Hour

Today, corporations are striving to gogreen. L&T is among those ew thatembraced the concept much be oreit became the norm. A key mannerin which L&T adopted this cause wasthrough automation.

While all L&T campuses are energye cient, zero or minimal-waterdischarge campuses that makeextensive use o renewable energy, one has especially raised the bar or allcorporate houses in the country.

L&Ts Centre or Excellence, Unnati,is a green campus that provides aneco- riendly work environment. The

building is equipped with modernamenities like access control andbuilding management systems withzone-controlled air-conditioning ande cient energy management systems.A solar photovoltaic power generationsystem generates 180-200 units o energy on an average. A solar waterheating system, with a capacity 1500litres/ day, takes care o the waterrequirements o the campus ca eteria.A waste water treatment plant recycleswater or gardening. Hazardous wasteis collected by the Mumbai WasteManagement and e-waste is processedby Eco-Reco Ltd. Kitchen waste iscollected in two compost pits, orcomposting to be used as manure.Noise levels are regularly checked tobe kept within permissible limits.

Another L&T building that has set abenchmark or corporations in Indiais L&Ts Technology Block at Hazirathat bagged the coveted PlatinumRating under the LEED NC v2.2 RatingSystem, widely acknowledged to beone o the toughest in the world.

Securing 56 out o the 57 attemptedpoints in the rating system, thebuilding is ranked third greenest inIndia and the rst LEED Platinumrated project in Gujarat.

Do you know that what you

can buy or Rs. 1 lac today willcost you over Rs. 5.74 lacs a er30 years? This is because o infation(simply de ned as the percentageincrease in the prices o goods andservices every year). Assuming Infation@ 6% P.A. the value o Rs. 1,00,000 willbe Rs. 17,411 a er 30 years. Hence youhave to let your money work harder

    or you.

Mutual Fund Is it or you?I you are someone who does not have

the time and/or the experience toanalyse and invest in stocks and bonds, mutual unds o er a vital investmentalternative. This is because mutual

unds spread the risk by investing in abasket o assets (equity debt etc) ratherthan putting all the eggs in one basket. Then there is a team o pro essional

und managers, with in-depth researchinputs rom investment analysts, whomanage the investments. Also, one

individual may not have the access tocritical in ormation required or making judicious investments that mutual

unds would have as large institutions.

The Essentials o AssetAllocationAsset allocation is a method ordescribing how much o di erentinvestment classes stocks, bonds, cash, real estate, precious metals, commoditiesetc one should have in the port olio. The idea is to distribute the risk across

di erent investments so that downturnto one particular asset class does nota ect the investor appreciably. Anotherprudent thing to do is to periodicallyreview and rebalance the allocation asper needs.

Asset Allocation ModelsDi erent people require di erent assetallocation models to suit their needsand risk-taking abilities. A retired

person with a lumpsum to invest may

pre er xed income obligations or asteady monthly income throughout theremainder o his/her li e. On the otherhand, a young corporate employeewill be interested in building wealthwithout the worry o depending onhis investments to meet day-to-dayexpenses. So, he may ignore short-term market fuctuations and pre er aport olio heavily concentrated in stocks/equity mutual unds.

    Preservation Model or the

Conservative InvestorInvestors who have a xed expense innear uture, e.g. the purchase o a house,or those who do not wish to risk losingeven a small percentage o principalvalue in short term may nd thismodel suitable.

o en comprise eighty-percent o theseport olios. The biggest danger is that thereturn earned may not keep pace withinfation, eroding purchasing power inreal terms.

Income Model or theSteady-Income-Seeking InvestorThe need or in-hand cash or meetingdaily expenses is o primary importance

or these investors. A typical income-oriented investor could be an employeenearing retirement and acing theprospect o losing his steady source o monthly income. Another examplewould be a young widow with smallchildren who has received a lump-sum settlement and cannot risk losingthe principal. For such investors, therecommended options are MonthlyIncome Schemes o Post O ces orMonthly Income Plans o Mutual Funds, with some portion invested in shares o blue chip companies that have historieso continuous dividend payments /large cap oriented mutual unds.

Balanced Model or theSemi-Conservative InvestorPort olios based on this model attemptto strike a compromise between long-term growth and current income. Formost people, the balanced port olio isgood or both nancial and emotionalreasons. However, it is even moresuitable or the age group 40+ as largeexpenses are likely to be incurred in thecoming years.

The ideal result is a mix o assets thatgenerates cash as well as appreciatesover time with smaller fuctuationsover long period o holdings. Balancedport olios tend to divide assets betweenmedium-term investment-grade xed

income instruments and shares o common stocks in leading companies, many o which may pay cash dividends.Balanced Mutual Funds or a compositiono Monthly income plan with largecap unds could be ideal solution orinvestors seeking a balanced approach.

Growth Model or theRisk-Savvy InvestorThe growth model o asset allocation is

designed or those who are interested inbuilding long-term wealth. Usually thisgroup includes young people (25-35years) who are in the initial phases o their careers. The assets are not requiredto generate current income because theowner is employed and living o his/her salary or daily expenses. In act,in contrast to the income port olio, theinvestor is likely to increase his or herdeposited unds. Even hundred percent o the port olio can be invested incommon stocks or in aggressive mutual

unds with a proven track record.

Beyond Asset AllocationChoosing an asset allocation model is just the rst step to investment success. One needs to review and reallocateinvestments to prevent erosion o

wealth in the long-term. As the needschange with increasing age, so must theasset allocation strategy.

It is advisable to engage a nancialplanner and share ones needs, objectives and risk-taking abilities totake decisions or a success ul nancialli e. I investments are managed bypro essionals with a proven track recordo identi ying appropriate instruments, such as the und managers in Mutual

Funds, one can get reasonablediversi cation o investments and canexpect to achieve ones nancial goals.

Noteworthy amongthem is the rst ever launched AAArated debt und, The L&T Triple AceFund and the rst Multicap Fund, the

Some O eringsOnes investment needs depend onones personal and nancial goals. The product range available at L&TMF, takes care o a gamut o theseneeds and couples it with world-class,customised services. Some o thepopular products are:

L&T Midcap FundIndian companies have entered a timeo high growth. This o ers opportunitiesto small & medium enterprises to growat aster pace than the growth rate o large & mature companies. There ore, investing in midcap companies enablesparticipation in comparatively earlystage o the business li e cycle o thesecompanies. Investors with high risk-taking abilities would pre er it.

L&T Midcap Fund is an open endedequity scheme with an objective o generating capital appreciation byinvesting primarily in midcap stocks. Itis a pure midcap und that meticulouslyidenti es valuation gaps by analysingthe growth prospects o a company. Theemphasis is on nding stocks whichcould be potential wealth creatorso tomorrow.

The L&T Opportunities FundThese are meant or the aggressiveinvestor. All stocks or sectors do notmove proportionately or in one directionin the equity market. The Fund choosesstocks based on their potential to take

advantage o valuation mismatchthat arises due to these movements. This Fund, there ore, attempts to takeadvantage o these opportunities. E.g.when mid-cap stocks outpaced thelarge-caps, the exposure to mid-capstocks was increased.

Adopting an aggressive strategy inan uptrending market has given the

und the ability to deliver. This undshould be considered or investing romthe medium to long-term (over 2-3years) investment, with the objective o capital appreciation.

L&T Monthly Income PlanI you are a conservative investor whoseeks periodic income, the L&T MonthlyIncome Plan is a good investmentavenue. This und is an open-endedincome scheme that invests 80% to100% o its corpus in instrumentssuch as debt, money markets andgovernment securities, and can investup to 40% in securitised debts. It alsoinvests up to 20% o its corpus in equityand equity-related instruments.

L&T Fixed Maturity PlansThese are close-ended income schemeswith a xed maturity date i.e. that run

or a xed period o time. This period

could range rom one month to as longas two years or more. When the xedperiod comes to an end, the schemematures, and the investor receives theaccumulated amount.

FMPs do not invest in equity. The

port olio is generally invested indebt and money market instrumentsmaturing in line with the tenure o thescheme. The objective is to lock-in theinvestment in securities at a speci edrate o return thereby insulating thescheme against market fuctuations

TransparencyL&T MF has set new benchmarksin the industry by maintaining thehighest level o transparency. Disclosingport olios on a monthly basis is a stepin this direction. On one hand, it givesinvestors a great deal o com ort toknow where their money is deployedand on the other hand, it helps themunderstand the thought process thatwent into chalking out their investmentplans, the purity o port olios, assetallocation and sector pre erence.

The success o any organisationdepends on the rmness o its process.L&T MF has robust processes inall unctional areas like research, investment, sales, operations, humanresources, risk management andcompliance. The processes are designedso that all activities act as check pointsand also complement other activities.

Orissa has an abundance o rawmetals. Among these is iron ore.

With its estimated reserve o at5.42 billion tonnes, the state is a treasuretrove or manu acturers o steel, pig ironand sponge iron. The excellent roadconnectivity o Paradip Port with thesebelts makes Orissa o great strategicimportance or Indias steel industry.

Bhushan Steel Limited (BSL), thelargest manu acturer o auto-gradesteel in India, is presently buildinga ve million tonnes per annum(MTPA) integrated steel plant atMeramandali, located around 130km

rom Bhubaneswar, at a cost o aroundRs. 25,000 crore.

L&T is concurrently executing allmajor units o iron & steel productionat a single location or this integratedsteel plant.

Phase IThe rst phase o this project wasinstalled with a production capacity2.2 MTPA o steel, which involvederection o a 180TPH twin shell conarc

urnace; a 2X180TPH ladle urnace, a1X single strand slab caster in additionto our kilns, a 110-MW power plant,a steel melt shop and raw materialhandling acilities. The rst phase alsoincluded production o sponge iron(6,80,000 TPA), billet caster (3,00,000TPA) and slab caster (2.2 MTPA).

Phase IICurrently, the second phase o BSL(capacity 5MTPA o steel, likely to goup to 7MPTA) is under construction.

L&Ts Construction Division is executingvarious EPC packages or this phase. Thescope includes a 2.5MTPA (3814cu.m)blast urnace, a 2X2.3 MTPA (204sq.m) sintering plant, the raw materialhandling system, all civil, structural, piping & equipment related work ortwo slab casters, two basic oxygen

urnaces (BOF), and civil work or 2.5MTPA coke oven.

L&T entered the project with a contract

value o Rs.1400 million. This has nowrisen to Rs.24591 million. Expectedtimely completion and commissioningo various plants has resulted incustomer delight and increased trust inL&Ts project execution capabilities.

    abrication yard.

As a green eld project, there weremany political and local problems to bedealt with. To begin with, a boundarywall had to be erected to demarcate thesite. The toughest challenge howeverwas to mobilise a large pool o skilledwork orce. As the site is located ina remote place with harsh climaticconditions (summer at 48 0C and rain allo 60mm), there were no workmenin the vicinity. But once these initial

hurdles were crossed, the work pickedup momentum and the project team

    started setting benchmarks.

Sa etyawareness programmes were regularlyconducted or every category o workmen in various areas like materialhandling, working at heights/ depths, deep excavation and con ned spacesincluding o ces. All workmen wereeducated on all possible sa ety measures. They were given the reedom to alarmengineers and ellow workmen or any

unsa e actions, methods or zones. Pre-employment medical examination andscreening was done or all workers toensure the right man or the right jobi.e. height passes were issued to workerswho were to work at great heightsonly a er examining their physicaland mental condition. To supplementthis, excellent all prevention and allprotection systems were put in place.

The sa ety training hall, specially

established at site or imparting sa etytraining, had a seating capacity o 60 ata time. This hall eatured various sa etytools, tackles, gadgets and accessoriesto provide a clear understandingo di erent devices to everyone. Inaddition, it had a ormwork mock-upyard where hands-on demonstrationswere carried out.

As a result o this, the site was ableto achieve an all time record o 58.2million sa e man-hours rom July 6,2007 to June 7, 2009, or which it washonoured with an international award

rom British Sa ety Council or the year

2008, and the ECC Sa ety Rolling Trophyor two consecutive years.

Labour ColonyA residential colony was establishedwithin the plant premises toaccommodate more than 6000workmen. Frequent health check-ups or all labourers are conductedby a quali ed and registered medicalpractitioner, who was accessible at all

times along with his team o paramedics,or any rst aid requirement.
