Rock Talk No. 151 / July/August 2019 A t first glance I may not seem like a person you would associate with chainmaille. I’m not a knight or a motorcyclist. I’m not young and cool. I’m a gray- haired grandma who loves chain- maille! Chainmaille satisfies some part of me that loves patterns and order. I found chainmaille as a craft and art in 2006 and I’ve been making it, teaching it, and designing it ever since. I started out as a beader (mostly a stringer). String- ing beads always felt insecure to me. In the back of my mind I felt that the crimping would not hold up and my piece would break and spew beads all over the place. In fact that did happen at a very inopportune time! Then I found chainmaille and the way that a chainmaille piece is made assured me that it would never break. Chainmaille has lived up to that. I’ve never had a piece break! I did learn to crimp properly and I do bead, but mostly bead weaving with a needle, thread, and beads. I taught beading and other forms of jewelry making for eight years at the now-closed Beads & Baubles in Fort Pierce. In 2006 I went to William Hol- land Lapidary School to take a wire wrapping class. During a break, while sitting in a rocking chair on their delightful porch, I was told about the Rock and Gem Club and it was suggested that I join. On returning home I immedi- ately looked it up and joined! I’ve taken many classes and greatly expanded my knowl- edge of jewelry making. I’ve had loads of fun and met many friendly and talented people in the process! I’m currently teaching advanced chainmaille on Tuesday evenings at the Rock and Gem club. I also teach beginner chainmaille when it’s requested. In June 2015 I was able to cross one item off of my bucket list. My design, Flares, was published in Step by Step Wire! Now one of the national chainmaille vendors, Weave Got Maille, is selling the kits for this design. I was, and still am, thrilled! I run Florida Jewelry Artist Retreat Group and we meet twice a year to chill and share our expertise. We have a lovely group of very talented artists from all over Florida and many other states! Right now we’re getting ready for our annual summer retreat. I have an Etsy shop (gsmith88) where I sell my jewelry but my best sellers are my digital chainmaille tutorials. Rock TalkNo. 151 / July/August 2019

At first glance I may not seem like a person you would associate with chainmaille.

I’m not a knight or a motorcyclist. I’m not young and cool. I’m a gray-haired grandma who loves chain-maille! Chainmaille satisfies some part of me that loves patterns and order.

I found chainmaille as a craft and art in 2006 and I’ve been making it, teaching it, and designing it ever since. I started out as a beader (mostly a stringer). String-ing beads always felt insecure to me.

I taught beading and other forms of jewelry making for eight

years at the now-closed Beads & Baubles in Fort Pierce.

In 2006 I went to William Hol-land Lapidary School to take a wire wrapping class. During a break, while sitting in a rocking chair on their delightful porch, I was told about the Rock and Gem Club and

it was suggested that I join. On returning home I immedi-ately looked it up and joined! I’ve taken many classes and greatly expanded my knowl-edge of jewelry making.

Right now

we’re getting ready for our annual summer retreat.

I have an Etsy shop (gsmith88) where I sell my jewelry but my best sellers are my digital chainmaille tutorials. My jewelry is also on dis-play and for sale at the Art Connec-tion in Fort Pierce.

Monthly Membership Meeting:4th Sunday, 2 PM

White City Methodist Church on Midway Rd. and Oleander Ave.

President’s Message

Thank you all for the suggestions and ideas to help improve the way our club works. It’s a system of checks and balances, and as an all-volunteer organization, the Board tries hard to keep the club running and grow-

ing smoothly. Please feel free to bring any questions and concerns to the Board. We meet monthly at 12:30 prior to the general meeting in the Fellow-ship Hall at the White City Methodist Church on Midway Road in Ft. Pierce.

At the present time we are very much focused on the upcoming show in October. The show committee has been meeting monthly and preparations are shaping up. You may get tired of hearing this, but we will need many vol-unteers to pull this off. Marcia and Lisa are working hard to fill the volunteer book and we can use any help you can offer. We need demonstrators all day each day.

This year we will bring back the Silent Auction instead of the Treasure (junk) Table and this booth alone will require quite a few volunteers. From the general membership we are asking for donations for this booth, perhaps a strand of beads you no longer love, a tool you replaced with a bigger and better one, etc. Rocks are always a favorite as are lapidary books and maga-zines. When you donate something, we ask that you mark it with a suggested starting bid and the committee will do the rest. We are asking that your do-nations be jewelry or lapidary related. If you bring donations into the work-shop, please mark them as such and we will find a place to store them. Do not just leave them on the table in the front room without an explanation.

Another volunteer is being sought to handle the hourly door prizes being donated by each of the vendors. There will be a PA system and a winning ticket will be drawn each hour at the booth of the vendor donating the prize. This way our winner has the opportunity to meet the vendor and show their appreciation in person.

Towards the end of August we will be compiling the annual donation drive for financial support of the show. Ticket sales this year are being handled by the Civic Center and we will not be mailing out tickets as we have done in the past. Instead we will reward each $20.00 donation with complimentary tickets and an entry into a drawing for a $100.00 gift card. Details will be ex-plained in full in the letter when it goes out. Remember, you will need a ticket into the show if you are not on the volunteer list.

At the present time we have over 30 vendors signed up for the show and it is on track to be our biggest and best ever!!

Thanks,Meri Jo Theobald

Soldering Tips and Tricksby Joe David

Part 5: Flux:The two main reasons you use flux in soldering jewelry are to keep the metal clean and to keep the

oxygen off the metal while it’s hot so it doesn’t oxidize. You have paste flux, you have liquid flux, and you have powdered flux. When you use each of the different fluxes is the big question. I find good re-sults in using paste flux when I’m using hard solder and I go to liquid flux when I am using medium and easy solder. You can also use borax as a flux which comes in a powdered or a chalk shape that you mix it with distilled water. Better yet, mix with alcohol, but be careful because alcohol is flammable and you cannot see the flame when it’s burning.

I look forward to your input on this subject.

Deadline for the next newsletter is September 9. Share your great ideas and photos!
