King’s House Retreat Walk Belleville’s Hidden Treasure
Spring is the perfect time to come explore the King’s House Retreat nestled on 47 quiet, wooded acres in Belleville, Illinois. The flowers are in full bloom and the trees are budding to make a beautiful spring walk. May is also National Physical Fitness and Sports Month. The Illinois Trekkers have purchased 25 AVA National Physical Fitness and Sports Month patches from AVA, and the patches can be purchased by any walker who participates in an event in May. The patch will be three dollars with fifty cents going to the King’s House Retreat. King’s House Retreat will provide tea and lemonade for walkers. King’s House Retreat will accept donations for the tea and lemonade if you would like to donate.
King’s House Retreat is sponsored by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. Originally the Albert Hoeffken farm, known as the Five Hills Farm,
the farm was purchased and in 1951 King’s House Retreat was opened. The grey stone building is the original farm house. The walk trail in this beautiful natural setting will pass stations of the cross with sculptures and scriptures. The walk will go through a walking stone labyrinth, something borrowed from the European church design tradition, with beautiful gardens. The 10k continues in the quiet
neighborhood and on the nature trail. There are 5k and 10k routes. Volunteers are needed to work in the following positions: 11-noon Start table 11-noon Checkpoint/finish table 1:30-3 pm Checkpoint/finish table 9-11 am Sales table 11 am-1 pm Sales table 1-3 pm Sales table 12:15 pm Trail cleanup after the last person
starts the walk. Please email or contact Diane Prost if you are able to work at the walk. Please join the Illinois Trekkers on May 21 at the King’s House Retreat Walk to discover Belleville’s hidden treasure. King’s House Retreat is located at 700 North 66th Street, Belleville, IL. Please follow the directions in the walk brochure to enter from 74th Street to park in the parking lot. Start between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. Walkers must be finished by 3:00 p.m. Contact Diane Prost (cell 256-527-3377 or email [email protected]) with questions or for more information.
Walk to Lindau
As of the end of March, we have
completed 33% of the distance to
Lindau, Germany – the site of the first
IVV volksmarch. Walking in the wrong
direction, we would be in Las Vegas.
Walking in the right direction, we are
riding a wave in the middle of the
Atlantic. Let’s keep our heads above
water as we get closer to the European
shore!
At present, 18 participants have
reported their monthly accumulation of distance completed
in AVA-sanctioned walks. To participate, simply send an
email to [email protected] or call 571-345-8301
with your total distance walked this year of AVA’s 40th
anniversary. Why join us? It’s a fun club-oriented incentive.
Tere will be prizes for participants when we “arrive” in
Lindau. And there’s great fellowship along the way as we
achieve this goal together.

Historic Collinsville and
Willoughby Heritage Farm Walk
On June 18, 2016, come walk the Historic Collinsville and
Willoughby Heritage Farm Walk. Walkers will discover there
is much more to Collinsville than the historic catsup bottle
water tower. The walk will pass the Bull Durham Mural (circa
1908). The walk will continue through downtown Collinsville
passing the Police Memorial and Police Station.
Walkers will continue on the walk to the Willoughby
Heritage Farm, a place where history comes to life through
historic structures, original tools, replica gardens and a
restored farm environment with barns, farm tools and live
animals. At the farm, walkers can see antique tractors, walk
through the restored farm house, pet the animals, and
stroll through the gardens. The 10k walk will continue on the
hiking trails of Willoughby Heritage Farm. Walking sticks are
required for the hiking trail. Please bring your walking stick,
or Willoughby Heritage Farm will provide walking sticks if a
walker doesn’t have a stick. Willoughby Heritage Farm is
part of the Collinsville Area Recreation District (CARD).
From the Willoughby Heritage Farm,
the walk continues through Collinsville
to the Historic Daniel Dove Collins
Home at 621 West Main Street. The
house was home to the city’s first
village president (or mayor) and the
place where the first council meetings
were held. The house is Greek Revival
Architecture. Collinsville was named
after Daniel Dove Collins. Collinsville
is creating a park around the Collins
House with a historic garden. The
walk then continues past the dog
park, Mutts on Main. Next to the dog
park is the Herr Funeral Home with a 1918 Sayers & Scovill
hand carved hearse with 9N-Red Seal Continental engine on
display. Inside the hearse is a wooden casket & a wicker
basket used to remove the corpse from place of death.
The walk continues past the
Blum House, established circa
1900. It is now the property of
the Collinsville Public Library.
From 1876, the Blum family
operated a business manufac-
turing cowbells. According to
an article in The Bell Tower, a
publication for bell collectors,
this family’s factory, with only
its handful of employees, had a daily production rate of up
to 1,000 bells, which made it one of the largest, if not THE
largest, bell manufacturer in the country during the entire
75 years of its existence. (“America’s Cowbells” by Gary
Spickler; The Bell Tower, Official Publication of the American
Bell Association International, Inc. V. 59, No. 3, May-June
2001.)
Next door is the Collinsville Memorial Public Library with a
water fountain in front of the library and a museum. The
Collinsville Historical Museum is a one-of-a-kind repository
for unique historical artifacts from 1767 through the
present. The walk will continue past two unique stores, the
Mexican Store & the Italian Store.
The walk continues past the Miners
Theatre so named because mining
was the first most important industry
in Collinsville. The first coal mine
was sunk in 1857. The town grew
with the industry and by 1886 a man
could walk underground through connecting tunnels
between the mines from one edge of the City limits to the
other. Mining and Collinsville were almost synonymous
terms. In 1916, a United Mine Workers of American Local
264 representative convinced fellow miners that a union
hall and public theatre should be built. The structure was
multi-purpose. The theatre brought entertainment to the City
of a class not usually seen in cities of this size. The second
and third floors gave a permanent home for the union of-
fices and provided a central meeting place for the mining
locals. These floors were also used by various community
groups for social activities and housed a small library which
was the beginning of the present day Collinsville Memorial
Public Library.
The walk ends at Bert’s Chuck Wagon where tacos and
other Mexican favorites will be available for purchase.
Millstadt TIN MAN Walk “Wow! I have a broad smile on my
face -- what a beautiful day!”
beamed the Tin Man. “My eyes
were gleaming when I saw 71 walk-
ers trekking along my historic
streets, past my steel beam supports,
through the cemetery, and along
park paths.” He continued, “My
heartfelt thanks to the event POC,
Jackie McKay, for her tremendous efforts; the thorough trail
markers, and the hard workers at the park pavilion,” the Tin
Man proclaimed. “You made my day by spreading the news
about the urgent need for my new “coat”. A Big THANK YOU
to everyone who walked in Millstadt on April 23rd under my
watchful eye,” the Tin Man winked.

Volkssport Committee On April 14, 2016 the
Volksport Committee held
its first meeting to begin
planning the 2017 walk
season. Members of the
committee that were
present were Trudy Duffman, Muriel Barber, Dale
Gerlach and Diane Prost. The committee is open to
any member that would like to help plan walks for
2017 or be a POC (point of contact) for a walk.
The committee discussed the
Soup Walk for 2017 with two
possible locations, Breese or
Glen Carbon. The committee
discussed continuing the Way
of Lights Walk in 2017 since it
is a popular walk for walkers of
all ages.
The committee discussed doing
a joint multi-event weekend
with the Railsplitter Wanderers. The Railsplitter
Wanderers are planning a walk in Olney, Illinois in
April 2017. The Railsplitter Wanderers suggested
that the Illinois Trekkers do a walk at Red Hills State
Park the same weekend.
The Volkssport Committee are
looking for ideas for walks. If you
have any suggestions, please
come to the next Volkssport
Committee meeting or submit
your idea to any member of the Volkssport
Committee. Two walk ideas that are being discussed
is a walk in Germantown during the 50th Anniversary
Spassfest and a walk in Marissa during the Coal
Festival. The committee is also looking for volunteers
to be POCs for walks.

Now that I’m enjoying walking/volksmarching, what do I do
with these IVV/AVA Record Books??
Part II
Last month we took a look at IVV/AVA Event Record Books. This month we will discuss the other primary IVV/AVA Record Book – Distance Books. As with Event Books, Distance Record Books have various levels of achievement which are specified by different colored books: blue, orange and yellow.
IVV Awards Program at a Glance
PARTICIPATION CATEGORY
AWARD LEVELS
BOOK COLOR
Events—all volkssports 10, 30, 50 events Green
Increments of 25 events to 600 events Purple
Increments of 50 events to 1,500 events Rose
Increments of 100 events to 3,000 events and beyond Gold
Distance—General Events
(Walking, Cross-Country Skiing, Snow Shoeing; optional for bicycling]
Increments of 500km to 8,000km Blue
Increments of 1,000km to 22,000km Orange
25,000km, then increments of 5,000km to 80,000km and beyond Yellow
Distance—Bicycling Events only 1,000km, 2,500km, then increments of 2,500km to 10,000km, and then increments of 5,000km
Brown
Distance—Swimming, Boating None n/a
Blue books are processed in increments of 500 kilometers until you reach a total of 8,000 kilometers. Orange books are processed in increments of 1,000 kilometers until you reach a total of 22,000 kilometers. Yellow books have 2 levels of processing: every 1,000 kilometers until you reach a total of 25,000 kilometers; and then every 5,000 kilometers until you reach 80,000 kilometers and beyond. (Personally I only know a few volksmarchers who have reached 80,000 KMs or more, and I respect them deeply!!) Please be sure to complete your name, address and email on the front cover of each of your Distance Books. Your AVA Registration # is assigned by AVA and appears on the front cover of your IVV Record of Achievement. [You will recall this is issued after you submit your first 10-Events Record Book to AVA.] You will note your Distance Record Book has 2 columns: the first designates KM and the second is the IVV certification stamp. After you finish a volkswalk, write the number of kilometers (KM) you walked in the first column. Usually this is 05 or 10 kilometers, although some walks offer slightly varying distances. You should record the actual kilometers you complete no matter what distance is specified for the walk, but do not use fractions. Each blue Distance Record Book has 60 spaces for designating the KMs walked and stamping the book with the official IVV walk certification stamp. If you complete 10 kilometers for each walk, you reached your first level of achievement. Congratulations!! You are ready to submit your blue Distance Book to IVV for processing.
7
However, if you choose to walk less than 10 KMs at each event, you may find that you have filled each space in your blue Distance Book but you have not reached 500 total kilometers. Caution: you are not yet ready to submit your blue Distance Book to AVA. This is when Insert Cards are used. Insert Cards are completed in the same manner as your Distance Record Books. They can be obtained free of charge at any walk event. The KMs and event stamps on Insert Cards count just like the pages of a Distance Record Book, but they cannot be submitted to AVA separate from a Distance Record Book. Continue to use Insert Cards until you reach 500 or more total kilometers. You then submit your blue Distance Record Book along with all Insert Cards to AVA for processing. If you exceed 500 kilometers, AVA will “carry-over” the excess in your Record of Achievement to be applied to your next achievement level. To be honest, use of Insert Cards can be confusing. Some walkers choose to purchase another Distance Rec-ord Book instead of using Insert Cards. The primary point to keep in mind – submit your Distance Record Book(s) to AVA for processing ONLY upon reaching the designated level of achievement – every 500 KMs for the blue level; every 1000 KMs for the orange level; and every 5000 KMs for the yellow level. Submit your Distance Record Book (and Insert Cards if applicable) to American Volkssport Association, Attn:
Awards and Records, 1001 Pat Booker Road, Suite 101, Universal City TX 78148-4147. Don’t forget to send your personal AVA Record of Achievement Book along with your Distance Record Book. AVA also recommends photocopying your book, in the event of loss during mailing. AVA awards certificates, pins and patches for each level of achievement every time you submit Record Books for processing. As you probably noted, Distance Record Books are submitted to AVA with far less frequency that Event Records Books. It is rightfully a source of pride when you reach each 500 KM (or 1000 or 5000) level, so celebrate your achievement!!
Distance Record Books are available for purchase ($6.00 each) at each of our monthly club meetings and tra-ditional walk events. You may also contact our club secretary, Susan Hodgson, to arrange for purchasing Rec-ord Books. Alternatively, you may purchase your Record Books directly from AVA. Don’t ever hesitate to ask any questions you may have about your IVV/AVA Record Books. They are a unique aspect of participating in AVA events, and they become a treasured commemoration of your levels of achieve-ment. Within the next few months we’ll discuss other record books available from AVA, such as bicycling and special programs offered from time to time. Please let me know at any time if you have any specific questions or com-ments about IVV/AVA Record Books. Submitted by Sue Bacon
