Editorial. (September 3rd 1995)

Dear members and readers,/ Waiting for SWN!

Next stop Sweden - where my wife and I spend eight marvelous holidays on the island of Oland. We had a wonderful time with mostly square dancing, Swedish traditional folk dance, we went by a little sirplane to see the island from the air and beach volley in the aftemo- ons.Really an active vacation and one of the best ones we have had for years. By the way, I should like to get in touch with other members who are also dancing square dance, to exchange pants of views, that should be nice.

Now as said, back to normal business. Lots of papers are here in my shack, so I do hope, that 1 have not forgotten anything for this issue of 3WN. We will have 28 pages with all sections included, except for the Letterbox section - I told you last month, that Kurt was not able to nake his page due to his holidays, this was not true, it was because of iis son’s wedding, sorry Kurt.

The Unofficial Radio section is somewhat reduced this month. I got a elefax from Ken, with the enclosed loggings, which can be found on mge 15. I’m not sure how it will turns out qualitywise, it is not a good nethod, as my fax machine is using thermopaper, and just not ordinary mper. So please have this in your mind if you want to provide us with tn article, etc. Ken is promissing to be back next month in the ordinary vay. He has bought a computer, so I look forward to have some nice iages from him in the time to come.

n this issue, you’ll also find two pages with pictures from the EDXC mnference, taken by Christoph Ratzer of Austria, very nice indeed and :hank you so much, Christoph. Also the front page picture this month s made by Christoph. Furthermore on page 24 you can read the speech ield by Tor-Henrik Ekblom at the EDXC conference, I think it is worth eading. So also in this issue there are something from the conference, :ven for those of you, who did not attended, so that you can see what ‘ou were missing.

‘II also like to draw you attending to the SWtips pages, where we have nade some changes. Firstly not to bring the same leggings of the well beard stations month after month, but just every second month, in order o save space.Secondly as a trial, we have arranged the same loggings in timeorder. Should like to know, what you think about this. Finally we will try again (we did that for about 10 years ago) to make some hand scannings. The first one will be for the November issue, where we will like to know everything what are heard in the frequency range of 5200 to 7100 kHz except for the pirate stations. You can read more about all this on page 4 and page 9.

From our QSL-editor and old friend, Harald Kuhl, Germany, I have got a letter, in which he tell me, that from January 1 st next year, he will no more be able to edit this section, as he will go abroad for a longer period. So now I’m looking (eagerly) for a new QSL-editor. I certainly do hope, that I’ll hear from one of our members, who is interested in Joing this job for us. So please don’t hesitate to write me, and I’ll give you more details. I can already now tell you, that the job will take 4-6 hours each month, depending n how many contributions received luring the month. So please think it over seriously.

From a reliable source, I got to know, that there are attempts going on, In having local meetings in the Arhus area resumption after many many rears. We in the board of course greet this, and hope it will work out. Please let me know the dates, so that it can be published here in SWN.

Jntil next month, I wish you all the very Best of 73’s

Dear tips-readers, Ramstein 26 AUG 95

Our General Board is presently discussing how to improve SWW to make it an even better tool of information for our active members. We are uni- quely the most international DX Club in the World and we should make full advantage of this fact.

One point is that we could reduce the tips pages and use the ffee space for more interesting surveys and articles.

The enormeous amount of SW tips we get each month could be reduced by giving a lower priority to international broadcasters, as they are nor- mally easy to get nowadays, and their schedules are so brilliantlv published on Noel Green's pages.

2310,o 2051-2100 AUS A8C Alice Snrims 8/8 S. mo mx, am

* = sien off Compiled by ANKER PETERSEN

Furthermore it is said thdt we ,do not need to have tips of the same easy-to-catch stations each month, like Caracol on 5075 or Africa No. 1 on 17630 kH2. Thus repeats from the previous issue of SWW could be omitted.

Furthermore the amount of tips can' be redu- ced, if contributors in Europe and North America only on exceptional cases send tips from their own continent as they are not real DX.

Thus we'll make a trial this month by not repeating most of the stations which were in the SW TIPS of SWW August 95, as you can see them there when you are DX-ing. Please let me have your comments upon this1 Best 73 Anker

Bandscan No. 1 - 6200 - 7100 kHz 8 Let's try to resume the old Bandscans again in SWWI In SWN/November 1995 we'll concentrate our efforts on studying what is going on in the 6200 - 7100 kHz range on broadcasting stations during September and October. With your tips for SWN/NOV, please report as ordinary tips all the stations you can identify (home service and international broadcasters and cladestines) (You are also welcome to log pirates, but please write their tips on a separate piece of paper for Ken Baird). You can listen at all times, and there are no prizes1

Below you'll find as another trial our SW tips this month arranged in time order. Is that a good idea 7

I had a catholic religious programme on 7017.7 kIIz on the 13th August in Polish, but there was a lot of co-channel interference, and only the next evening I caught the ID - Radio Maryja. I heard Radio Maryja from tune-in around 1616 to past 1966 UTC. This station is listed under National Commercial Networks in the WRTH96 edition. The transmitter is unstable: 2018 I heard Radio Maryja on 7014.8 kHz at 1830. I wonder whether this is an authorized relay of the Radio Maryja programmes. Heard often during afternoons/evenings here (ed)

Speech held by Tor-Henrik Ekblom, Sweden at the EDXC Conference, Rebild Bakker, Denmark

As WG of the’founders of the European DX Council back in 1967 I feel very honorcd to speck to you sll today.

The tbne for this years EDXC Confamce is “DX-ing i dag og i -den” or “DX-ing today and in the future” and it is and will be lively discussed during thesedayshereinDena&.Buttotmderstand betteraUthisnewoftoday.1 would like to recall and draw your attention a little bit back to the former days ol radiohmitttheNodmncxtmtriw. Anker Petersen has been talking at many occasions about the founding of theEDXC,soIwantsaysomuchabout~butinsteadgiveyousomcotber mKlKnies.

DX-ing as a hobby here in the Nordic countries has been in its organizcd form b) clubs, federntions and so on, only for some 40-50 years, as far as I know. In Sweden several clubs existed already in the 40’ and the Swedish DX Federation or the DX-Alliance for dx-clubs. as it was called when founded in the mid- 5(r. is now celebrating its 40th anniversary next year. The founder of the D: AUiance Mr Ame Skoog of Radio Sweden and the Sweden C&ng DX-ers- progmmme is now retid. But he is still very active with building of new violins, keeping track of his famiIy and the family bxlitions which are his most valuable hobbies these days besides the radio. Many &-KS have stad their hobby through his pages in Teknikens V&Ids DX Club, including myself in 1952. In Finland there had been some minor clubs in the beginning of the 50’ but it took uatiI 1954 and some years later when the clubs still active today were founded. If1 remember right the DX-Listeners Club in Norway as well our hostings clubs here in Denmark wen fo&ed in the 50’s. The Danish Shortwaves Clubs InhahmaI had since the beginning a very good slogan which fits in every time and moment and especially today. “Friendship through knowledge”. The Danish Shomvaws Club Int. stated in 1956 and is very much alive as we can see today

Common for all rhe radioclubs here in the north was, that they all published clubpapers with &-tips on smtions heard, &-news. q&pages and on. An interchange of the papers between the clubs started as well and is still t&in8 place in most cases, thus having a nice cooper&on going on, chao8iog views. The clubs also arianged fbzquent clubmeetin8s and &-nights. Quite common was. that the clubs wanged own specialprogrammes over some international radiostations and issued own qsl-cards for correct reception reports. The mop advanced clubs also had their own monthly or weekly dx-programmes on shortwave. Just to mention two; the Finlands DX-Club’s pro-e “Around the world” via Radio FiaIand in 1958 and the Dtish Shortwan Clubs Internationel in 1968 with the DX-Window-programme which stopped in 1970, whenRadioDwmKkceesedtheirtheEnglishlMgua~grammes. Goodthat the 0th~ intemationeI stations continued or started their dx-programmes as weU. GoodweourprognmwroverAWRwithFinaKmne. Those where the days..my 6hds. National DX-Champicmship Con&.& have been held nearly yearly in Sweden and Finlsnd, but also Nordic DX-Champiouship Conteti have been arranged quite regularly by the clubs in tmns. For example this year’s competition was wrmstdbythctwoE)lmishClubainooopaationLotoftime~eefo~has kenputdowntogettbesecoatests~ugoodarpoJJibleandwhatajob!

But actually it all started, guess when ? Well we have to go back to the “starting year of radio” 1895 that means backwards IO0 years ago today, when Gugliclmo Marwni (born in 1874 died 1937. when I was born ). Popov and other feUows invented the radio. We have all read about the crystalreceivers snd other modemi- ties st those days and betieave me. there were dx-ers already during those early days. A lot of loopantemms itnd wirean&nnas were used besides the variety of diEereat receivers. I learned it was common to send listeners reports to the ~anywryinNorthAmericaThaewesacompanycalledFldtoinUSA. who inven&d and printed QSL-stamps. Some 700 radiosMons had these QSL- stamps printed with their callsign and included the words “verifying reception” on tkn. I have seen some of these stamps some weeks ago, and still today these stamps are collectors items snd highlights in USA and all over the world for that matter. I know a guy in Sweden who got some 150 oldies in his albums. The USA QSL-stamps showed the American eagle and radiomasts and the Canadian one of course the beaver and radiomasts. Today we still have the collecting of q&s, anyway by most of the dx-ers I Guam. Anoth~ side of this hobby today is, that dx-ers are collectinjordinary post- stamps tirn all parts of the world connected to radioeneiversaries and why not.

Well, back to the 40’s when I think the medium- and shotive really got a great speed, due to the World War II. The radionansmi&ons were massively used au propagada tool on all sides. The knowledge and importance of antennas of all shapes has grown of course !remadously during the past years, not to mentioned the quipment snd receivers. DX-ers got used to communications receivers and afforded to buy these as well. I started with my brothers a 5-tube Phillips and a lon8wire ant- of 30 meters and I sm now having a ICOM communications receiver with an active enienna Eska 8 Edvis suitable for city dx-ing , very weU knowing &at there are newer and even better once on the market today. The development goes fast indeed.

Of course lot has happend since the early days of radio, but a mayor thing really chocked us in 1990-91 and I am talking about the Fell of the Iron curtain. the new situation in USSR, stop of the Cold War and through all this the jamming stations disappeared totally. thus giving us more possibilities fo hear more and new interesting stations on the bands. The reduction of transmissions especially OVK Radio Moscow gave the chance for establishment of new and private radiostations in E&-Europe. Lot of new &annals for relay-stations of the big international radiostationr has also been noted, I1 has given us radiolisteners new hope and motivation. The WRTH is next year celebrating its 50 yesrs Anniwxsary, hurrah for them. I will always remember, when I at the start of my dx-ing yean back in 1952 every month of December daily asked the books&e, if they already had gotten this year’s book. The Chr&mas days would have been a disaster without it! O.Lund Johansen and Jens Frost were the two mediaheroes of their time and Santa Claus’s in my eyes during those days end later I really felt it as a big honor to fkehnce for them over 30 years, eying to give a little back of what I got so plentyofbymyfmetimehobbyendstiU8ettin8.IwishaUthebesttoAndy Setmitt and Bart Kupenu and good luck in their future publishing of the dx-ers Bible, in any form it will be.
