DO CURFEWS KEEP TEENS OUT OF
TROUBLE?
No.. But why?
No. But why?
First, a curfew only restricts the time someone can get into trouble.
Most teens are stubborn
Secondly, even with a curfew, teens will do what they want.
They feel… different
Sneaking out gives a teen a thrill, like they are invincible.
Adds stress
Having a curfew will add stress on the teen because they will freak out about running late.
Stress = Freaking out
If your teen drives, which most do nowadays, they might stress out about running late and might not make it home.
Curfews are popular though
But that doesn’t mean they work.
1957 curfews
By the year 1957, half of America’s cities with population of 100,000 or more had curfews that didn’t work.
Crime rates in Detroit After Detroit adopted the youth curfew in
1976, juvenile crime dropped 6% in curfew hours but raised 13% in non-curfew hours.
San Diego
Their youth curfew has been invalidated twice by appellate courts for violating young people’s rights.
Also, an 18-year analysis of 21 cities in California conclude that youth curfews ARE useless.
California
Raises crime rates during day
It may lower juvenile crime rates at night but it just raises them during the day.
Wasting resources
Curfews don’t help much, just instead, waste police resources.
Curfews don’t teach
A curfew doesn’t teach a teen to be polite, be responsible, or to obey the law.
So do you think curfews work?
Yes or No
