Starting a Group – Recognizing the NeedRAILS Library Marketing Group, primarily public librariesSimilar group did not exist for academic, need persisted based on conversationsElectively chose to avoid large organizational structure like ARCL/ALANeeded a focus, but not a limitAcademic Library Marketing – focus was going to be on marketing issues that would effect academic libraries, but were not exclusive to academic librariesNeeded room for growth, using online tools and collaborative technology available through the university

Administrative AdviceAsk for topics for ideas – people want to come if they know the topics will fit the issues they’re experiencingBuild a Brand before you promote - have a few blogs, sample items, or a series of programs ready to go when you “launch”Create a Culture – is this going to be structured/unstructured? Happy hours? Round Table? What will people expect when they attend?Due diligence – make sure you’re not crossing any boundaries (your employer may prohibit something, there’s another group near by, or you are unqualified)Evaluate Engagement – keep attendance records, check on return visitors, ask for meeting hosts, try online meetings when people are busy

Tools of the TradePoll Everywhere – quick polls, no accounts, NO EMAILS!Trello – free(ish) project management software which allows for attaching documents, tagging members, and checklistsDoodle – establish a meeting time without emailing back and forth, simply list the times you are available and others “check” times that work for themWeebly – web content management software; free or paid versions (many similar sites exist)MailChimp – free(ish) way to distribute email information; branded, professional, open rates, subscribe/unsubscribe management
