Pentecost In the United States military, the Judge Advocate General's Corps
(JAG) is the legal branch concerned with military justice and military law. Judge Advocates can serve as legal advisers to commanders. They
can also act as prosecutors in courts-martial, or serve on the defense team. The first encounter many people had with this branch of the
service was through the television series JAG that began in 1995 and aired on CBS through 2005. For ten seasons viewers followed the
exploits of military lawyers in plots that occasionally stretched credulity. The next general exposure of the Judge Advocate General's
Corps to the public was through the military commissions set up to bring to trial those who were interred at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Unlike the television series, the JAG officers in this setting were deadly serious about their duties. Whether for the defense or the prosecution,
they were determined to show the face of justice. The Gospel for this weekend is a bit of a reprise from that of two weeks ago. Again we hear Jesus promising to send an Advocate who
will be with us always. That Advocate is the Holy Spirit whose coming upon the church we celebrate this day. This Advocate is also serious about his duties. The Holy Spirit doesn't wear a uniform or carry a briefcase. We won't see the Spirit saluting or reciting the Pledge of
Allegiance. As Advocate, the Holy Spirit teaches us the ways of Christ and opens our hearts to his message.
In their role as adviser, defender, or prosecutor, Judge Advocates are there to explain the law and hold others accountable to it. We heard just a few weeks ago that the law that Christ gave to his disciples is to love one another, a command reiterated in today's Gospel when Jesus
tells his disciples to keep his word. As advocate, the Holy Spirit, dwelling in our hearts, will hold us accountable to Christ's law of love.

ST. THOMAS MORE SCHOOL: A FOUR STAR SCHOOL Last week, we received a letter from Glenda Ritz, the Superintendent of Indiana Schools, informing us that St. Thomas More School had achieved recognition as a 2011-2012 Indiana Four Star School. We have known for quite some time now that our school has been providing an excellent opportunity for students to learn. We are elated to see the State of Indiana agree with us. Kudos to our faculty and staff and thank you to the parishioners who help to subsidy our school. The picture above is proof of how a great educational start at St. Thomas More could amount to a successful future for our students. Tony Liszewski and Bill Burke graduated with Doctor of Pharmacy degrees and Marc Campos graduated with a Master of Physician Assistant Studies degree from Butler University on Saturday, May 11th. Tony will be working in Indianapolis as a CVS pharmacist and Bill will be working locally at Walgreens. Marc is remaining in Indianapolis working in the Emergency Room at Marion General Hospital. Congratulations to all of our graduates and to all who will be graduating these next few weeks. May God be with you as you begin the next phase of your lives. May He grant you happiness and success in all your endeavors. Do not forget: God gave you your many talents. Make sure that you give Him thanks for all that you have received! Keep the faith, celebrate the faith, live the faith as completely as possible. You have a great opportunity to make Jesus known and loved by the manner in which you will live your lives. Congratulations, all!
PLEASE REMEMBER THEM Please pray for the priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully and whose anniversaries of death are this week:
May 19: Msgr. Ignatius L. Urbonas (2012) May 22: Rev. Joseph Herod (1988) May 23: Rev. John N. Chylewski (1965) May 24: Deacon Joseph Rapal (1992) Rev. Albert J. Zimmerman (2002)
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Ever Wonder Why...
… Supermarkets make the sick walk all the way to the back of the store to get their prescriptions while healthy people can buy cigarettes at the front?
… People order double cheeseburgers, large fries, and a diet coke?
… Banks leave vault doors open and then chain the pens to the counters?
… We leave cars worth thousands of dollars in our driveways and put our useless junk in the garage?
… We never see the headline ‘Psychic Wins Lottery’? … ‘Abbreviated’ is such a long word? … Lemon juice is made with artificial flavoring while
dishwashing liquid is made with real lemons? … The time of day with the slowest traffic called rush hour?
Come to the church this evening (Sunday, May 19th) at 6:00 p.m. for our monthly Taize Prayer. Taize is a wonderfully peaceful prayer that helps to center one on Jesus.
The prayer typically lasts only for thirty minutes. Yet, in that short amount of time, the participant truly can feel the Spirit moving. As this is Pentecost, it might be nice to come and experience that peace and joy that fills us when the Holy Spirit is present.
THE BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH Birthday celebrations are always important as they remind us of our many blessings as well as help us to look ahead. Today, on the Feast of Pentecost, we celebrate the birth of the Church. After all, it was not until the Apostles were filled with the Holy Spirit that they had the courage to go out into the world and proclaim the Good News. We, too, have been filled with the Holy Spirit. At Baptism, and then again at our Confirmation, we were filled with the many graces and gifts that pour forth from the Holy Spirit. May we use those gifts wisely in order to tell the Good News to our own world. Happy Birthday, Church!

Thoughts on Living Stewardship
Pentecost Today we remember Pentecost, the fiftieth day after Easter, when, as promised, the power of the Holy Spirit was poured out onto the apostles. This was not just one historical event
reserved for them alone. The Spirit is poured out continuously for us all. But your heart must be open to being transformed as
the apostles were. God gives us the gift of the Holy Spirit to help build up others in a life of faith. Is there some calling deep in your heart that you are afraid you have no talent or
training for? Pray that the Holy Spirit will lead you to fulfill the calling and equip you to do it.
