DON BOSCO AGRO TECH, POLUR is one of the rural TECHNICAL centers empowering the socially segregated youth in Thiruvannamalai district. The interventions of the Institute are very relevant and needy. It has various activities such as Boarding, Formal and Non Formal ITI, Farm, Evening Study Centres.

Stories of Change Ms. Sundarammal,

a benefactor of SPS ME initiative belongs to the self-help group called ‘Annai’, based in Basin Bridge. At the age of 55, having lost her husband, she resides with her son who is married and

currently works as a mechanic in a local automobile service store.

She availed the loan of Rs.15,000 provided through SPS to carry on sales of Idly Batter. The sale per day varies from 7 kg to 10 kg. She produces good quality Idly Batter and supplies with consistency in taste and substance. Word of Mouth is her promotional tool which increased customers.

Sale happens most likely from 6 am to 8am and 6 pm to 9 pm. A half kg packet of Idly Batter is priced at Rs. 12. Approximately, 10 to 20 packets are sold on an everyday basis. She earns approximately Rs.140 per day after reducing all operating expenses.

She is glad that she is self dependent and earns money to provide for their household and support her son and finds great happiness in smallest of things like being able to provide pocket money to her grandchildren.

Women Entrepreneur of the Month As the famous quote

says “A woman with a vision empowers an empire of woman to do more, see more and be more”, Ms.Shanmuga lakshmi, benefactor of SPS ME project executed in Vilathikulam, at the age of 58 continues to inspire the women in her locality.

She is an active member of the SHG, ‘SivappuRoja’ since 1993. Owing to an illness faced at an early age of 11, she had lost her eyesight completely on her left eye and has partial blurred vision on her right eye. Seven surgeries and various medical treatments failed in restoring her eyesight. Hence, she remains unmarried and resides with her mother.

Her only source of income for the past 20 years is spinning plastic wires into a shopping bag. She availed the loan funded through VEMBU. Initial loan availed of Rs.5,000 and recent loan availed of Rs.10,000 was invested in her business.

She spins plastic wire bags in 2 standard sizes. A big sized plastic wire bag requires 2 days’ manual labour from 9 am to 5 pm; medium sized plastic bag requires one day’s labour from 9am to 2 pm. Big sized plastic wire bag is priced at Rs.250 and medium sized plastic wire bag is priced at Rs.105.

She customizes her product by using three colour plastic wires to spin and by attaching beads demand. Sourcing of raw materials required is done in Vilathikulam itself. On an average, she weaves 3 big sized bags a week and sells it at a price of Rs.750. The cost of production of three bags is Rs.300. Therefore, weekly, she makes Rs.450 over and above the expenses incurred in production as profit. She strives to meet the increasing demand for the product.

Donor’s VisitDonors from Stichting Pater Schlooz, the Netherlands

visit Tamil Nadu from the 12th to 20th of January. They have scheduled to visit the projects for 2016 and to take stock of how the projects are being implemented. Pope Johns Garden-Chennai, Home Away from Home-Kavarapettai, St. Thomas Hospital- Thomas Mount, Agro Project-Sagayathottam, Agro Tech-Polur, Anbu Illam & Adivaram, Salem, DB Home-Nilavarapatti and DB Varadarajanpet are the projects they visit for 2016. And also they interact with the SHG women from Basin Bridge benefitting from Women 1000+ and SPS ME! Projects.

Having had the opportunity to intern at SPS Foundation, I take great pleasure in being associated with the little contributions made by SPS for a greater impact it has had on the society. The amicable work environment provided me with great insight into the execution of their various projects, the challenges

faced and opportunities they offered helped broaden my perspective.

Being a management student, I’ve had an enlightening experience in understanding the functioning of a clearly designed organization structure with high level of transparency, autonomy, drive and zeal.

Their passion and commitment to uplift the lives of many is fed through adaptable, practical, well-researched and ecological solutions for real time crisis faced by the underprivileged.

Kudos, Respect and Wishes!
