Final Year Project

The Final project is the most important part of the course as it demonstrates your ability to apply the knowledge gained over the course of your studies and the ability to work in a methodical manner, in order to deliver a well researched, technically strong body of work.

Important stages in this activity will include: - Project selection - Interim presentation - Planning structure of thesis - Submit unbound copy for proof reading - Submission of final bound thesis

Dates as per hand-out

N.B. It is essential that all projects contain a strong analytical / technical element.

Project Selection

Projects may come from one of the following: - List of projects presented by staff.

- Ideas drawn from your own experience/interests.

- Industrially based project.

Selection process. - Project list to be posted on my web page

- Meet with staff to discuss project ideas

- Submit Project preference (Friday 19th Sept)

- Project / Supervisor allocation (Wed 24rd Sept)

Project hand-out and project proposal form circulated

Thesis writing guidelines to be circulated later

In the meantime give some thought to project ideas of your own.

Finite Element Analysis

Finite element analysis enables the designer to analyse the stresses in a component.

When a force is applied to a component stresses are induced.

Finite element analysis enables the stresses to be determined.

Blue represent low stress and Red represents high stress.

2D Mechanism Simulation

2d Mechanism Simulation enables the user to evaluate the forces generated in a Mechanism using a simplified representation of the Mechanism.

Thermal Analysis

Thermal analysis

Fluid Flow analysis

Computational Fluid dynamics

Use of computer simulation

Computer simulation should never be taken at face value.

All analysis must be supported by manual calculation, or experimental work or both.
