Orlando is the bar supervisor. Lets listen to his employees talking

about THE SEASON’S INN MANAGEMENT during their break:

Employee 1: “ The more you do around here, the more they want you

to do. I filled in for Cindy twice this week, and I have been asked to do

this once again. Which mean I need to reschedule my plan for the

evening. But they don’t care about that. They just want to know how

soon I can be here!!”

Employee 2: “ Yeah, and the gossip is that they may be cutting

overtime for us, probably to pay for the fancy bar equipment - the stuff

which we will never use because no one has the time to show us how

to use it!! If they would have asked me I would have suggested they

hire a part time waiter for the busy periods with the same money.”

Employee 3: “ Well I'm getting sick of asking guests how to make

drinks. If they’d give me some time to beef up my skills, it would pay

off for everybody.”

Employee 4: “ they keep telling me that they are going to find some

free time for you, but…”

Employee 1: “ Well here comes Orlando to crack the whip. Guess we’d

better get back to work.”

PRAISE AS A MOTIVATOR

When you sincerely compliment an employee

you: :

•Improve morale - a kind word can put anyone

in a good mood.

•Shape Behavior - Instead of criticizing mistakes,

praise good efforts and performances.

•Encourage Commitment - No matter how small

their contributions, praise employees when their

actions help your department reach its goals.

to get rich, to play tennis, to travel etc.;

Interaction-oriented

– The principal motivation is the presence

and actions of co-workers. People go to

Motivation balance

• Individual motivations are made up of elements

of each class.

• The balance can change depending on personal

circumstances and external events.

• However, people are not just motivated by

personal factors but also by being part of a

group and culture.

• People go to work because they are motivated by

the people that they work with.

Managing Teams

Group interaction is a key determinant

Team work.

Flexibility in group composition is limited

as we have less choices with whom we

work

– Managers must do the best they can with available people.

Team Composition Group composed of members who share the

same motivation can be problematic

– Task-oriented - everyone wants to do their own

thing;

– Self-oriented - everyone wants to be the boss;

– Interaction-oriented - too much chatting, not

enough work.

• An effective group has a balance of all types.

• Interaction-oriented people are very important

as they can detect and defuse tensions

that arise.

Team communication

• Good communication is essential for

effective group working.

• Information must be exchanged with

every team member involved.

• Good communication also strengthens

Team Spirit as it promotes

understanding.

The Story about the Tiny Frogs...

The Goal was to reach the top of a very high tower

A big crowd was

gathered around the

tower to see the race

and cheer on the

contestants…..

Page 25: No Slide Titlekb.concepthospitality.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/MOTIVATION... · CASE STUDY I at the Seasons Inn…... Employee 3: “ Well I'm getting sick of asking guests how

Honestly: No one in the crowd really believed

that the tiny frogs would reach the top of the

tower.

You heard statements such as “Oh, Way too

Difficult.!!

“They will never make it to the top”

“Not a chance that they will succeed. The

tower is too high.!!

The tiny frogs began collapsing One by One

…Except for those who in a fresh tempo were

climbing higher and higher…

You heard statements such as “oh, Way too Difficult.!!

“They will never make it to the top”

“Not a chance that they will succeed. The tower is too high.!!

The tiny frogs began collapsing One by One …Except for those

who in a fresh tempo were climbing higher and higher…

The crowd continued to yell “It is too difficult!!! No one will

make it!” More tiny frogs got tired and gave up…BUT ONE

continued higher and higher and higher…..

This one wouldn’t give up! At the end everyone else had given

up climbing the tower. Except for the one tiny frog

who after a big effort was the only one who reached the top!

THEN all the other tiny frogs naturally wanted to

Page 29: No Slide Titlekb.concepthospitality.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/MOTIVATION... · CASE STUDY I at the Seasons Inn…... Employee 3: “ Well I'm getting sick of asking guests how

Know how this one frog managed to do it? A contestant asked

the tiny frog how the one who succeeded had found the strength

to reach the goal? It turned out….That the Winner was

DEAF!!!!

THE WISDOM OF THIS STORY IS:

Never listen to other people’s tendencies to be NEGATIVE or

PESSIMISTIC …….cause they take your most wonderful

dreams and wishes away from you. The ones you have in

your heart! Always think of the power words have. Because

everything you hear and read will affect your actions!

Therefore: ALWAYS be….POSITIVE! And above all: Be

DEAF when people tell YOU that YOU cannot fulfil YOUR

Dreams!

Always think: I can do this! Pass this message on to 5 “tiny

frogs” you care about.

GIVE THEM SOME MOTIVATION!!
