    DO RIGHT, FEAR NAUGHT

  • OCTOBER 1941 This new Squadron was ordered to be formed at RAF Colerne on 20th September 1941 under Fighter Command Signal Q109 of 12th September 1941 to be equipped with Whirlwind Mk. I aircraft. S/L John Sample DFC was posted to command on the date of formation. The site of formation was subsequently changed from Colerne to the satellite aerodrome of Charmy Down, as the Squadron was to replace No.125 Sqn, & in short time the personnel began to arrive. F/L Joseph Grantley Hughes & Sgt Douglas St. John Jowitt arrived from No.263 (Whirlwind) Sqn for flying duties on 22nd September 1941. Orders were sent out by Fighter Command to various Maintenance Units for the delivery of 18 aircraft Operationally equipped, & this number was held on charge in the Squadron as at 30th September 1941. The strength of the Squadron as at 30th September 1941 was 3 Officers; 1 Sgt Pilot; 12 Senior NCOs & 165 Other Ranks. Owing to the lack of facilities & equipment, the maintenance & inspection of the aircraft was carried out from RAF Filton, & this necessitated the transfer of part of the Maintenance Flight to that station, the rest remaining at Charmy Down. Flying up to the end of the month consisted of transport flights to & from Filton & some training flying by S/L Sample DFC, who had not previously flown Whirlwind aircraft. 1st-19th RAF Charmy Down This record covers 1st-19th October, as 1 Flight was made Operational on 20th, & the record carries on from that date. Training carried out continuously throughout the 19 days, the weather in general being good for the time of year. The operation of flying aircraft to Sand Bay for Air Firing Tests continued & all serviceable aircraft were so tested. A total of 171 flying hours was reached & pilot strength increased from 3 as of 30th September, to 15 on 19th October, consisting of 6 Officers & 9 Sergeants. These new postings were transfers from No.263 Sqn, & subsequently enabled the Squadron to show a Flight of Operationally trained pilots. Personnel strength was well up to establishment & it could be said that good progress had been made by the Squadron in the month since its formation. 1st P/O Alexander Torrance & F/S Joseph Laurier DeHoux RCAF arrived for flying duties from No.56 OTU. 8th P/O John Clifford Lawton, P/O George William Martin, Sgt Ralph Otto Gustaf Häggberg, Sgt John Frederick Luing, Sgt Jack Maddocks, Sgt Hugh Leo O’Neill, Sgt Maurice John Peskett, Sgt Basil Lionel Robertson, Sgt John Anthony William Sandy arrived for flying duties from No.263 Sqn. 20th It has been decided that the Squadron should make every effort to have 1 Flight Operational by this date & this was accomplished with a total of 8 Operational Pilots & 12 aircraft, this Record for the Squadron commences. There were 15 Pilots on

strength, 6 Officers & 9 Sergeants, with a total of 18 aircraft. The remaining 7 Pilots were undergoing intensive training & the aircraft lacking in some essentials of Operational equipment were being put through the preliminary gun testing on the ranges at Sand Bay. Training Operations were carried out & 2 pilots carried out Air-to-Sea firing. 24th 1st Operational Sorties S/L Sample & F/O Clark flew to the Forward Base at Predannack & landed there without incident, followed by Sgt Häggberg as reserve. Refueling & crystal changing. The objective was railway sidings at Landernau near Brest, where it had been previously reported trains of fuel containers had been seen. They crossed the French Coast at 500-600 feet. Both attacked, but the fuel containers had evidently been moved. No opposition from the ground or air was experienced, but 2 Bf.109s were seen near Brest. S/L Sample attacked some coal trucks from which smoke was seen, whilst F/O Clark attacked a large Loco & Trucks. He left it enveloped in steam. The 2 aircraft returned safely to Forward Base, & in company with Sgt Häggberg left there & returned safely to Base. To Forward Base - Predannack. F/L Hughes & Sgt Robertson with Sgt Peskett as reserve, left Base for Predannack. The first 2 named pilots carried out a low-level attack on the Landiviseau Goods Yards in north-west France. Landfall was made 4 miles west of Ile de Batz, & an attack was made on a Train of covered trucks at 150 feet, & a 2nd attack from 400 feet. Hits were observed & smoke seen. A wireless mast 5 miles north of Landiviseau was attacked & damaged. Landfall was made at Lizard Point. No air or ground opposition & no shipping observed. R/T was good, & contact was made 60 miles from Base at 200 feet. F/L Hughes burst his tail wheel on landing at Forward Base, & Sgt Peskett remained to fly the damaged machine back after repair. P7096 F/L Joseph Grantley Hughes P7107 Sgt Basil Lionel Robertson P7050 Sgt Maurice John Peskett 27th Cross-country, aerobatics & air combat practice. Sgt John Edward McClure RCAF & Sgt John Robert Brennan RCAF arrived for flying duties from No.263 Sqn.

28th Sgt James Reginald Rebbetoy RCAF arrived for flying duties from No.56 OTU. Sgt Brennan was carrying out practice single-engine landings when one of his engines cut. He landed at Colerne with the undercarriage retracted & the aircraft was damaged. S/L Sample with Sgt Peskett took off from Base to do a formation practice, with practice attacks to be carried out by Sgt Luing who took off 10 minutes later. All 3 aircraft carried out turns at about 1,000 feet for some minutes & Sgt Luing broke away on the Squadron Leaders orders to carry out the 1st attack. On approaching for the 2nd attack, Sgt Luing saw the Squadron Leaders aircraft going down out of control, with part of the tailplane coming off. The machine was in a spin, & when close to the ground, Sgt Luing saw S/L Sample leave his machine & his parachute open, but his canopy did not open, & the he landed on the roof of some farm buildings near English Coombe. The aircraft landed on the same buildings & burst into flames. S/L John Sample was killed. Sgt Peskett reported that his aircraft was bumped but remained under control & he returned immediately to Base & landed. His aircraft was found to be damaged but repairable on the unit. He did not see anything of the Squadron Leaders crash. After seeing the crash, Sgt Luing returned to Base & reported the accident. 30th Sgt Maurice John Peskett posted. Mandolin Landernau Rail Yards near Brest. Left Base for Predannack, which was reached 1 hour later. F/O Clark & Sgt Jowitt crossed The Channel at 1,000 feet & the French Coast at Pontusval. The target was found, & trains of Goods Wagons were seen in the Yards. Attacks were made from 300 feet & hits were observed with resultant black smoke, but no definite results. On the return journey, Sgt Jowitt overtook F/O Clark who was seen to be flying on 1 engine. He called him up on the R/T but was unable to understand the reply, so climbed to 1,500 feet & weaved around F/O Clark. As his petrol was then running short, he made for Forward Base & lost sight of the other aircraft, but when just short of the English Coast he heard F/O Clark say that he would have to bale out. Sgt Jowitt landed safely at Predannack, but F/O Colin Anthony Gordon Clark did not report. He was picked up about 26 miles south of Lizard Point by a destroyer but died on board. There is no news as to the cause of his death at present. His body was taken to Plymouth by the destroyer & deposited in the R.N. Hospital at Stonehouse. Reconnaissance attempts by Sgt Robinson, the reserve pilot, were made from Predannack, & a Lysander dropped a dinghy close to F/O Clark, but he was not seen to make any attempt to get into it. As no opposition was encountered either from the ground or air, F/O Clark could not have been wounded, & it is supposed that he was injured when his aircraft hit the water & sank. • NOVEMBER 1941 RAF Charmy Down 1st After being Semi-Operational from 20th October, the Squadron was made Non-Operational under orders from No.10 Group HQ. This was partly because it had lost S/L John Sample DFC on 28th October & F/O Colin Clark, on 30th. It was also due in part to the shortage of Operational pilots & aircraft. Sgt Basil Lionel Robertson to F/S. 2nd Humphrey St. John Coghlan DFC arrived for flying duties from No.263 Sqn. 7th F/L Robert Sinkler Woodward DFC arrived for flying duties as Flight Commander from No.600 Sqn. F/S Antony Victor Albertini arrived for flyng duties from No.263 Sqn. On paper only as he was in hospital with gunshot wounds to his eye. 10 new Pilots arrived from No.56 OTU, 4 Officers & 6 Sergeants, but as none had any previous experience on twin-engine aircraft, they were more or less kept grounded, pending the arrival of a dual training twin-engine aircraft, which was a necessity. 2 of these new Officer Pilots were transferred to No.263 Sqn to replace 2 Sgt Pilots whom 263 had previously transferred to this Squadron. Orders were received from Fighter Command HQ that the Squadron was to move to RAF Coltishall on 8th, & an advance party of 1 Officer & 18 NCOs & men left Charmy Down the previous day. The main Squadron party travelled by rail, arriving at Coltishall at 1800 on 8th November 1941, leaving behind 1 NCO & 19 Other Ranks as a rear party. The Filton Maintenance Section joined up with the main party at Bath Station. An air transport party of 1 NCO & 18 Other Ranks arrived on 8th November 1941 by 2 Harrow aircraft & 13 Whirlwinds came up in 2 formations that same afternoon. On arrival at Coltishall, the Squadron was again made Semi-Operational, & 12 out of a total strength of 27 (less F/S Albertini, left behind in Bath Military Hospital, with a gunshot wound in his eye) were made Operational. Maintenance conditions at Coltishall are excellent, & with the arrival of spares, the Squadron found itself in a satisfactory position, & assumed its Operational responsibilities at 1300 on 9th November 1941. RAF Coltishall 9th The morning was spent getting equipment up from the station after the move from Charmy Down, & at 1300 the Squadron again became Semi-Operational with 1 full Flight. 12 Pilots were Operationally available, & 1 section was at Readiness, & 1 at 15-minutes. 10th Base Patrol Patrolled Base in company with a Spitfire.
