On Monday, November 22nd, at 10:00 am, NOA’s Bargain Shop officially be-came SOUTHERN FINDS and moved to our new location in the Dahlonega Historic District, at 40 North Grove Street. Southern Finds is our new, signature initiative and specializes in designer, new and gently used clothing, gifts, furnishings, collectibles and more, all at great prices for today’s shopper. Just like before, all pro-ceeds of Southern Finds will help fund our emer-gency shelter and support
services for domestic vio-lence victims and their children who are seeking a life free from violence. The Southern Finds brand offers a creative way to help fund the NOA shelter opera-tions and programs in these difficult economic times. 100% of the proceeds of the store provides clothing, personal items and necessi-ties for the women and chil-dren who are experiencing hardship due to domestic violence. Donating to Southern Finds is a great way to clean out your closet, storage space or spare bedroom and truly
make a difference for women and children who so desperately need your tax-deductible donation.—

PETS in Action Partners with NOA Children’s Support Group
Hello, my name is Rudy, (I’m the cute one in the photo with the perfectly styled hair).
I‘m a “Yorkie”, a representative of the distinguished Yorkshire Terrier breed that
originated in working-class England in the 1800’s. I am proud to be certified through
the American Kennel Club’s stringent 10-Step Canine Good Citizen Test. My owner,
Cathy Sanford, and I meet many interesting people as volunteers for PETS in Action:
Pet Enabled Therapy Services.
The mission of PETS in Action is to improve the quality of life of disadvantaged
persons in rural North Georgia through the use of Animal Assisted Therapy.
I am part of a certified team of dogs and cats that accompany their owners to
visit local nursing homes, libraries, hospitals, schools and the NOA shelter.
PETS in Action is a vital part of the NOA Children’s Support Group. Therapeutic
play is a proven technique to help children cope with the effects of trauma.
I really enjoyed working with the kids at the NOA shelter during children’s
support group. Three little girls giggled and laughed as they stroked my soft
fur. It was bloody fantastic! I was the center of attention...the epitome of
cuteness… and I think they really liked my great sense of style and clever British accent.
Dogs really are a kid’s best friend...especially kids in the NOA Children’s Program!

The Effects of Childhood Trauma

Support Group
Kids exposed to domestic violence
are at an increased risk for behavioral
and emotional difficulties. Children
may be traumatized by domestic vio-
lence – by witnessing it or by being
abused. A child’s response to do-
mestic violence depends on the se-
verity and frequency of the abuse,
access to family and community sup-
port, and the child’s overall resilience.
Understandably, children often feel
depressed, anxious and fearful. The
unpredictability of a violent household
suddenly changes their world.
Children in families where domestic
violence is present also struggle
to form healthy relationships and
strong emotional bonds to heal from
the trauma.
During children’s support groups and
individual sessions, NOA advocates
work with children and moms to help
them identify their feelings and de-
velop healthy coping skills to deal with
the stress they are experiencing.
Play activities in small group settings,
combined with individualized attention,
help children of all ages increase their
self-esteem, develop safety skills and
improve behavior.
