Federico Garcia Lorca was a Spanish writer born in
Fuente Vaqueros, Andaluzia. He died in 1936 during the Spanish
Civil war.
Romancero gritano: In this book, Lorca shows Andalusia's
soul. It is formed by several poems, for example “Romance de
la luna”.
Curiosities: Federico Lorca was an activist of the Republic
and left wing. In 1936 Lorca found himself caught in the middle
of the Spanish Civil War. He was shot without trial by supporters
of General Francisco Franco on August 19 or 20, 1936, in
Granada.

Franz Kafka was a Czech writer born Prague. He suffered
many diseases and he died victim of Tuberculosis in 1924.
Short stories: All the stories represent very collorful artistic
scale of his work. These short stories show Kafka´s view of the
world and life. The book consists of 40 short stories, that include
“The Metamorphosis” and it was the only work published during
his life.
Curiosity: He suffered from migraines, insomnia, constipation,
boils, and other ailments, all usually brought on by excessive
stresses and strains. He attempted to counteract all of this by a
regimen of naturopathic treatments, such as a vegetarian diet
and the consumption of large quantities of unpasteurized milk.
Despite all that, his tuberculosis worsened; he returned to
Prague, then went to Dr. Hoffmann sanatorium for treatment.

Orhan Pamuk is a Turkish writer born in Istanbul. He was
educated at Robert College secondary school in Istanbul and
went on to study architecture at the Istanbul Technical
University since it was related to his real dream career,

The Black book: Tells the story of an Istanbul lawyer named
Galip, finds one day that his wife Rüya (the name means
"dream" in Turkish) has mysteriously left him.
Curiosities: Nobel prize-winning Turkish writer Orhan
Pamuk fulfilled his dream of opening the Museum of Innocence
as portrayed in his 2008 novel of the same name in the
Çukurcuma neighborhood in Istanbul. The museum displays
real and fabricated artifacts from everyday Turkish life between
1950 and 2000, in homage both to the novel and to Pamuk’s
beloved native city.

José Saramago was a Portuguese writer born in Azinhaga.
Jose Saramago is writer of the new generation of the romance in
Portugal. He dedicates himself, beyond the romance, to the
story and the theater, having its first dated productions of 1966.
He was born in a family of landless peasants, in Azinhaga, a
small village in the province of Ribatejo.
Baltasar and Blimunda: It is a love story set in the 18th
century with the construction of the Convent of Mafra, now one
of Portugal's chief tourist attractions, as a background. Two
young lovers interact naturally with historical characters
including the composer and harpsichordist Domenico
Scarlatti and the priest Bartolomeu de Gusmão, recognized
today as an aviation pioneer, all in the shadow of the Inquisition.
Curiosities: His personal opinions about religion caused
many controversies. In 1992, the Portuguese Government
ordered the removal of his book “The Gospel according to Jesus
Christ” from the European Literary Prize’s short list claiming
that the content of the book was religiously offensive.

Antonio Tabucchi was an Italian writer, born in writer born
in Vecchiano. His books and essays have been translated in 18
countries, including Japan. Several of his books were adapted to
film. Pereira Maintains is an example.
Pereira Maintains: The novel is set in Portugal in the
summer of 1938, during Salazar's dictatorship. It tells the story
of Pereira, an old journalist of a Portuguese newspaper -
the Lisboa - who loves literature and practically spends all his
life for it.
Curiosities: He loved being and living in Portugal very much
and used to spend and live six months of the year in Lisbon with
his wife. He taught Portuguese Language and Literature at the
University of Siena, Italy. He was a great admirer of Fernando
Pessoa.

Stanislaw Lem was a Polish writer born in Lwów. His father
served the Austrian Army. He studied medicine, but he never
took his doctor degree. Stanislaw worked as a mechanic and as
a research assistant and he started writing in 1946.
Solaris: His novel Solaris was adapted to the cinema twice.
This book deals with the problem of human existence in the
world of the unknown. It tells the story of Planet Solaris that is
inhabited by a single Plasma Ocean organism which can
materialize human thoughts. When astronauts become more
aggressive in forcing contact with Solaris, it confronts them with
pushing the buttons of their most painful thoughts by recreating
their dead wives and relatives, bringing the dead back to life in
front of their eyes.

languages.
