Some people think tossing horseshoes at a stake

driven into the ground approximately 40-feet apartis a tall feat. Noble, however, mastered this long-standing American tradition with his partner, Doc.Combining their tossing skills, they became domi-nant on the playing feld and even advanced to thestate tournament!

Nevertheless, Nobles most cherished memories wereplaying for fun with his hometown friends.

For three nights a week, they would bet $0.50 pergame and play three games. One evening Noble lostthe bet and owed Doc $1.00. Having a witty senseof humor, Noble whipped out a Canadian dollar. Thejoke stuck between the two players for severalyears and the same Canadian dollar was passedback and forth between the games loser.

Noble was the last to lose since he currently has theoriginal dollar tucked

    away in his

    possessions.

Noble and his buddies were always looking for a good time!

Apack of men gatheredto hunt South Dakotas state

bird, the ring-necked pheasant, in Brit-

ton, S.D. The group strategically planned howto bag the birds. They would form a circle, walktowards the center, and scare up any pheasants.

Now days hunters walk straight lines in corneldrows to scare the birds. Noble believes his group

had a better strategy because todays pheasantscan escape by zigzagging through the differentrows of corn. Whereas, his group ensured the

pheasants could not escape because the entireterritory was enclosed.

Nobles group indeed out-witted, out-smarted,and out-played to win the pheasant hunting

    game.

Not only did the group hit their limits with thepheasants, but they also got two jackrabbits!

The couple met while bowling in Sisseton, S.D., andit was love at rst sight. Noble saved up the money and

after two years of dating they became engaged. When

Geraldine showed her father the ring, her fathers reaction

was not what anyone expected. He brought his face close

to Geraldines hand, squinted, and asked is that a dia-

    mond?!

They lived a full happy life with three beautiful kids.

NG The rst snowfall brings the excitement of ex-

ploring a winter wonderland of forts, snowballghts, and the timeless joy of sledding.

Noble and the Stavig brothers would grab their

wooden runner sleds and head to the tallest hill

in town, which actually was a road that the

plows had not yet cleared. It was innocent fun, until someone decided to take sledding to the

    next level.

Noble and the Stavig brothers climbed to the top

of the hill. As a car passed by, Noble started to

run with the sled. All of a sudden, he dropped

to the ground on the sled while grabbing the

cars bumper. The driver never saw the extra

passenger and continued to drive. After Noble

had picked up enough momentum, he would

release his grip and y down the street.

The thrill-seeking boys thought this sleddinggame was fantastic ... until they had to

    climb back up the hill!

If a person looks closely at Nobles right cheek, one can see a mole. But do not get too close,

otherwise the tickle monster will come to play!

When Nobles grandchildren and great grand-children came to visit, Noble would ask if theycould see the mole move because it was a lady-bug.

Of course, the kids were not fooled and wouldsay no! Then all of a sudden Noble would starttickling the children and a giggle fest wouldstart.

Bouncing the grandchildren on his knee,Noble would recite this Danish rhyme. Atthe end of the rhyme, the child slid downhis leg and have a bounce landing on theoor.

Noble was walking into the barn when hesuddenly came face-to-face with his youngerbrother, Carol. Carol was caught red-handedsmoking!

Carol had his hands full with two ve-gal-lon buckets and a cigarette hanging out ofhis mouth. He knew he had been bustedfor smoking and was in a pickle. Carol juststood staring at Noble. He had no choicebut to keep the cigarette between his lips

because straw covered the barns oor. Noblenever said a word, and only gave a lookand walked o.

Years later this awkward momentbrought many opportunities for thebrothers to bond with teasing and

A simple cup of coffeebecomes happinesswhen you share it

    with a friend.

All good ideas start with a round table discussion. Nobleand four close buddies may not have been brainstorming so-lutions for world peace in Britton, S.D.s cafe, but they weresolving a big dilemma - who would buy coffee each time

    they gathered?

The men decided to simply roll dice, and whoever rolled thelowest number would buy the first cup o Joe.

No one ever got upset about buying the coffee because thepocketbook was only dented by $0.25 a cup!

Noble has worn many of hats over his lifetime including a fire-mans helmet. When Sisseton asked their community members tovolunteer for the local volunteer fire department, Noble jumpedaboard the fire trucks to help his community.

Serving nearly 25 years, Noble walked away from each devastating

fire without a scratch or burn, but did manage to acquire a luckyeight-ball from the Pool Hall while it burned to the ground.

One night Noble received a call that the Pool Hall was in flames.Upon reaching the site, the firefighters quickly went into the burn-ing building to see if any humans were inside. Not seeing anyonethe men started to retreat including Noble. However, for some

unknown reason Noble looked at the pool table, and spottedthe billiards eight-ball. Calmly, Noble picked-up the sooty

ball and nonchalantly slipped it into his jackets pocket. Theeight-ball was the only item that was saved that day.

Noble took on theleadership role onthe Redmen football

    eld as the highschool quarterback.

He would march the Redmen downthe eld each game, until one crispfall evening when he entered theWebster Bearcats home turf. Nobletook a hard hit, which knocked himto the ground. Instantly he knewsomething was wrong. That eveningNoble suffered a broken collarbone, which put his football career onhold.

Noble really did live up to the fa-mous football motto -

Noble excelled on the basketballcourts during his high school

years as a Sisseton Redmen. Ashis senior year came to a closeNoble faced the decision ofwhether he would or would not at-tend college.

    Yankton Colleges head basketball

coach saw Nobles potential and of-fered a scholarship for him to attendand play for the college. However,Noble felt the need to remain inNortheast, SD, and be near his fam-ily. He never regretted his decisionto not go to college and play ball.

Deer season opener is an exhilarating time for manyhunters. Imagine the premiere opening day - theexcitement could probably be felt in the air. Noblecaught the bug and headed out to bag his rst buck.

Noble and three other men trekked to the woody SicaHollow area. The week before snow showers had laid

a thick blanket of white across the region. To make theirhunting experience easier, a local friend of the grouphooked a sleigh onto his horses and hauled the men intothe woods. Once the group had reached their destination, the friend left the men to the big hunt.

After walking the trees the group stumbled across three

deer. Raising his 20-gauge shotgun, Noble red rst. Hisbuddies followed Nobles lead and took aim at the twoother deer. All three deer were harvested.

Later, the friend returned with the sleigh and horses. The men wondered how everyone andthe deer would t onto the sleigh. The

friend had a solution - tie the trophy deer to ahorses tail and the horse would drag theanimal back to the home base. The men on theother hand would have the luxury of riding onthe sleigh!

This was Nobles rst and last time deer hunting.

ery Noble is a man of many trades. He started learning

business techniques while working at the Stavig brothers store, and eventuallywent on to own his own grocery store.

Starting in a creamery he discovered one a sweet indulgence: spreading

PURE cream on a Hersheys chocolate bar! From there he worked in a

hatchery, where they raised thousands of chicks and worked with clients

from across the region. Finally, Noble owned and managed Graversen Grocery for

nearly 12 years. The store was open seven days a week. He needed to quicklylearn basic Native American words because a large majority of his

customers only spoke it. Nobles advertising was innovative and brilliant.

He would dye baby chicks fur different colors for Easter and put the chicks

    in the windows!

When I rst learned I would be embracing another persons life stories, I had a mix-ture of feelings: excitement, anxiety, and anxiousness. Walking up to your door, myfears vanished because of the Velkomman sign. I then knew we would connect.

    Thank you for creating a warm, loving aurora.Although decades may separate us in age, our passions and adventures in life seemto go hand-in-hand. I still am amazed with the similarities: love of sports especiallybaseball; hunting and shing; Norwegian heritage; faith in the Lutheran church; 4-H;

and a sweet tooth for Hersheys chocolate.Thank you for sharing your spunky personality.Even though you were humble and thought some of your stories were silly, I did learnvaluable life lessons. The ideas to never take anyone or any moment for granted, cherish family and friends, and live life fully yet humbly subtly reiterated during ourvisits. This wisdom and guidance will continually enrich my life.

Thank you for life reections. After each story was revealed, I would silently make mental reminders to try an ad-venture or treasure the small things. Although life may not go quite as anticipated, Ihave learned from your jokes and witty comments humor can overcome obstacles.

Thank you for your humor.Above all THANK YOU for allowing me anopportunity share your wonderful lifesadventures with others. You simply are anamazing man and have touched many peopleslives.
