Psalm — Create a clean heart in me, O God (Psalm 51) or Psalm 130. Second Reading — Christ became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him (Hebrews 5:7-9) or Ro-mans 8:8-11. Gospel — If a grain of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it produces much fruit (John 12:20-33) or John 11:1-45 [3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45].
SAVED BY GOD’S LOVE Because the people broke the old covenant, God promised a new covenant, not in the blood of oxen and other ani-mals, but in the blood of the Son, Jesus Christ. This new covenant, foreseen from afar by Jeremiah and the prophets, was not to be engraved on stone, or written on paper, but carved on our hearts, so that we might know God intimately. Not by keeping many laws are we to be saved, but by the love of God, living and real in our hearts through the sacrifice of Christ. Our Eucharist is the pledge of that indwelling of Christ, and of our response of praise and thanksgiving to God for the mercy, love, and kindness shown to us in forgiving our sins and cleansing our hearts of everything evil. God issues this invitation to intimacy by offering us the chance to have our sufferings transformed into the perfect love of the Sav-ior, who first loved us.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the next two weeks, as we hear of the interior anguish of Jesus, we are led to the Garden of Gethsemane, the scene of a night of suffering, failure, and loss. In Hebrew, the word means “olive press,” and it was an olive grove, although only a few trees remain. Olives can’t be eaten off the trees, they need to be cured—knocked from the trees at harvest time, scooped into a stone basin, and cracked open by a heavy millstone. The crushing stone weight was itself called a “gethsemane,” and once it was lowered onto the olives, oil from the fruit and the inner stone would drip into a groove and flow into jars. The night before his death, Jesus experienced such anguish that scripture says his own blood perspired from
him, an image no one who understands olive oil production could miss. Today, the Mount of Olives is within the city of Jeru-salem and the site of the Church of All Nations, also known as the Basilica of the Agony. It was built in 1924, funded by Catholics in twelve different countries. An open-air altar on the grounds is used by Anglicans on Holy Thursday every year. Nearby is the Russian Church of Mary Magdalene, built by the czar in 1888, its magnificent golden domes a distinc-tive landmark. There is also another tiny Catholic Church, called Dominus Flevit, or “The Cry of the Lord,” built in a teardrop shape in the mid-1950s. For centuries, the Franciscan order has had the care of the shrines of the Holy Land, and our Good Friday collection helps sustain these precious sites.

SALVADOS POR EL AMOR DE DIOS Después de que los israelitas quebrantaron la antigua alianza, Dios prometió una nueva alianza, no con la sangre de bueyes y otros animales sino con la sangre del Hijo, Jesucristo. Esta nueva alianza, que Jeremías y los profetas habían anticipado, no sería grabada en piedra ni escrita en papel, sino que se escribiría en el corazón, para que pudiéramos co-nocer a Dios íntimamente. La salvación no está en obedecer muchos preceptos, sino en el amor de Dios, que está vivo y es real en nuestro corazón gracias al sacrificio de Cristo. Nuestra Eucaristía es la promesa del Cristo que vive dentro nuestro y de nuestra respuesta de alabanza y agradeci-miento a Dios por su misericordia, amor y bondad al perdonar nuestros pecados y limpiarnos el corazón de todo mal. Dios extiende esta invitación a la intimidad al ofrecernos la oportunidad de que nuestro sufrimiento se transforme en el amor perfecto del Salvador, que siempre nos amó.
TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En Latinoamérica, como en muchas partes del mundo, hay una horrible e impresionante pobreza. Enfrentado con la miseria humana, el cristiano puede responder con resignación “Yo no soy nadie, ¿qué puedo hacer yo? Nada.” o puede responder con obras de caridad ayudando uno por uno a los pobres y necesitados. Esta virtud, es el pilar más importante
de la conversión. Porque en ella imitamos a Jesucristo que vino no a condenar al mundo sino a salvarlo. Sin la caridad nuestros ayunos son dietas y nuestras oraciones son palabras necias. La caridad es una virtud cristiana, porque Dios es el mejor ejemplo de lo que es la caridad. La caridad no es limosna, es amor y justicia, es salud y salvación; es cumplir con el mandamiento de amarnos los unos a los otros en un mundo donde la mayoría son pobres y desamparados. La caridad es dar al necesitado algo que uno aun necesite, es obrar por cambios sociales que pro-muevan la dignidad humana y el bienestar económico de todos. La caridad es amor y Dios es amor; vivamos en ese amor.

Registrándose nos ayuda a cono-cerlo mejor, si alguna vez tiene necesidad de una carta para Inmigración, una carta de contribuciones hechas a la parroquia o una carta de permiso a otra Parroquia, podremos dársela fácilmente. If you ever need a contributions letter for tax purposes, or a permission letter for another parish, we can access the information by your parish number and provide you with a letter. If you have not registered, you can fill out the registration form in the back of this bulletin and sub-mit in the collections basket or stop by the Parish center to do so.

St. Patrick’s Ministry of Health in collaboration with Providence Health & Services invites you to stop by the Parish Center on the Second & Fourth Tuesday of the month for information and enrollment into some type of medical insurance like Covered CA, Medi Cal or Cal Fresh or if you have any other questions, from 7pm to 8:30pm. If you can not make it at those times, you can make an appt. for another day by call-ing Ms. Leticia Garcia at (818) 847– 3968.
