    1. InstallatIon

    Readtheollowinginstruct ionsorPCorMactolearnhowtoinstallNocturnonyourcomputer.Aterinstallation,

    rememberthatNocturnisnotaMIDIdevice,itisanAutomapdevice.MIDIistransmittedusingthevirtualMIDIportswithintheAutomapUniversal(Server)sotware.

    1.1 Pc

    TheNocturniscompatiblewithWindowsXPservicepack2,XPX64andVista(32-and64-biteditions).

    InstallationplacestheNocturndriverandAutomapUniversal2.0sot wareonyourcomputer.

    CloseallrunningprogramsanddisconnectallUSBdevicesromthecomputer,withtheexceptionokeyboardand

    mouse.

    LocatetheleNocturnSetup.exeontheNocturnresourcesdiscanddouble-clicktorunit.

    TheinstallerwillpromptyoutoconnecttheNocturntoyourcomputer.ItheWindowsFoundNewHardwareWizard

    appearsateryouconnecttheNocturn,clickcanceltocloseitandthencontinuewiththeinstallation.

    Duringinstallationtheollowingmessagemayappear:

    WinVista WinXP

    ClickInstall(WinVista)orContinueAnyway(WinXP)tocontinuewiththeinstallation.

    Selecttheplug-insyouwanttousewithAutomapbydraggingthemromthelet-handlisttotheright-handlist,then

    clickOKtoclosethePlug-inManagerwindowandcompletetheinstallation.Youdonothavetoselectanyplug-insatthis

    stageasthePlug-inManagercanbeusedtocongureplug-insatanytimeaterinstallation.Seesection2.5ormore

    2.2 the automaP server

    TheAutomapUniversalsotware,orAutomapServer,handlescommunicationbetweentheNocturnandthehardware

    orsotwareitiscontrolling.TheAutomapServermustberunningoryoutobeabletousetheNocturn.Togetgoingater

    installation,connecttheNocturntoyourcomputerviaUSBandthenlaunchtheAutomapServerrom:

    Windows:Start->AllPrograms->Novation->AutomapUniversal->LaunchServer

    Mac OSX:/Applicatons/AutomapServer

    AterlaunchingtheAutomapServeryouwillseetheollowingwindow:

    ThisistheAutomapUniversalwindow.Youcanresize,maximizeandminimizetheAutomapUniversalWindowbutitwillnot

    gotothebackgroundwhenyougiveanotherwindowocus.Whenopen,itwillremainvisibleinrontoallotherwindows.

    However,youcansetittobesemi-transparentsothatyoucanseewhatisgoingonbehindit(seesection2.4).Pressthe

    ViewbuttonontheNocturntoopenandclosetheAutomapUniversalwindow.

    OncetheAutomapServerisrunning,youcanlaunchyourmusicsotware.Somesequencers,whenloading,will

    automaticallylaunchtheAutomapServeriitisnotalreadyrunning.WhilsttheAutomapServerandyourmusicsotware

    arerunning,theNocturncanbedisconnectedandreconnectedwithoutcausingproblems.However,theAutomapServer

    mustnotbequitatanypointwhilstyourmusicsotwareisrunning.Doingsowillresultinthemusicsot warehavingtobe

    restartedtore-establishitsconnectionwiththeAutomapServer.

    BeoreyoustarttousetheNocturn,werecommendgettingtoknowtheterminologyassociatedwithAutomapUniversal.

    2.3.1 clIents

    ClientisthetermusedoranythingyoucancontrolusingtheNocturn.Thiscouldbeoneotheollowing:

    Automap-enabled(wrapped)plug-in(VST,AUorProToolsormat)

    Sequencermixer

    AutomapMIDIClient

    Atpresent,onlyCubase,Nuendo,SonarandTracktionsupportAutomapmixercontrol.Forothersequencers,mixer

    controlmaybepossibleusingtheAutomapMIDIClient.TheAutomapMIDIClientcanalsobeusedtocontrolMIDI-enabled

    plug-insandhardwareMIDIdevices.MoreinormationontheAutomapMIDIClientcanbeoundinsection5.Automap

    mixercontrolorothersequencerswillbeincludedinutureupdates,sokeepaneyeoutonwww.novationmusic.comor

    updatenews.

    2.3.2 control maPs

    ControlMapisthetermusedorthearrangementoparametersacrosstheNocturnscontrols.Itispossibletoassign

    theparametersowhateveryouarecontrollingtothephysicalcontrolsontheNocturninanyway.Forexample,iyouare

    controllingasotwaresynthesizer,youmaywishtoassignltercuto toencoder1,lterresonancetoencoder2,lter

    envelopedecaytoencoder3etc.Onceyouhaveassignedparametersinthewayyouwant,youcansavethearrangement

    oparametersasacontrolmap,whichcanberecalledwhenyounextcontrolthatsotwareordevice,so

    thattheNocturnscontrolsremainassignedtothoseparameters.

    2.3.3 PaGes

    Althoughthereareatotalo17assignablecontrolsontheNocturn(8encoders,8buttonsand1crossader),youare

    notlimitedtoassigningonly17parameters.Acontrolmapcanhavemorethanonepageocontrols.Youcancreatea

    newpageandassignallthecontrolstodierentparameters,thenswitchbetweenthenewandoriginalpagestoaccess

    upto34parameters.Itispossibletocreateasmanypagesasyoulike,orremovethemiyouhavetoomany.Thepage+

    andbutt onscanbeusedtonavigatethroughpageswithinacontrolmap.Itispossibletoassignmorethanonecontrol

    ontheNocturntothesameparameter,meaningthesamephysicalcontrolcanbeassignedtothesameparameteron

    dierentpagesoacontrolmap.Seesection3.3orinormationonaddingandremovingpages.

    2.3.4 control maP GrouPs

    Eachcontrolmapwillbelongtooneoourgroups,accordingtothetypeoclientitcontrols.TheourgroupsareUser,

    FX,InstrumentandMixer.Acontrolmapwillbeautomaticallyassignedtoagroup,butyoucanchangethegroupthatit

    belongstoromtheAutomapUniversalwindow.

    Thegroupsystemallowsquickerselectionocontrolmaps.Iyouwanttocontrolacertaineectplug-inthenyouknowit

    willbeintheFXgroupandyouwillonlyhavetolookthroughtheFXcontrolmapstondit,notallcontrolmaps.Wehave

    giventhegroupsuseulnamesbut,sinceyoucanassignacontrolmaptoanygroupyoulike,thereisnothingtostopyou

    romusingthemdierentlytothewaytheyarelabelled.Forexample,youmaywishtocontroltheplug-insononlyour

    othetracksinyoursession,inwhichcaseyoucouldassignthecontrolmapssotheyareseparatedbetweentheour

    groupsonatrack-by-trackbasisratherthanaccordingtothetypeoclient.

    OncetheAutomapServerisrunning,youcanaccesstheAutomapsettingsasollows:

    Windows ClickontheAutomaplogointhesystemtray.

    Mac OSX ClickontheAutomaplogointhedockandthenselecttheSettingsmenu.

    Theollowingoptionsareavailable:

    Enable Pot Pickup:Thisoptionappliesonlytothecrossader.Ithisisactivethenthecrossaderwillnotaectthe

    parameteritisassignedtountilthephysicalpositionothecrossadermatchesthecurrentvalueotheparameter.

    Thisstopstheparametervaluejumpingtothepositionothecrossaderaterselectingadierentcontrolmap.

    Automap Focus Follows Plug-in UI:ThisoptionappliestocontrollingAutomap-enabled(wrapped)plug-insinyour

    sequencer.IthisisactivethentheNocturnwillautomaticallymaptowhicheverplug-inyouselectinyoursequencer.Ithis

    isnotactivethenyoumustmanuallyselectadierentplug-intocontrol,eitherbyclickingtheAutomaplogointhebottom

    let- handcorneroaplug-inwindoworselectingoneromtheBrowserViewotheAutomapUniversalwindow.

    Encoder Acceleration:Thisoptionisusedtosettheencoderaccelerationi.e.therelationshipbetweenhowastyou

    rotat eanencoderandthemagnitudeoitseectovertheparameteryouarecontrolling.ThedeaultsettingisMedium

    butthiscanalsobesettoFast(orcoarsercontrol)orO(ornercontrol).

    Window Transparenc:ThisoptionisusedtosetthetransparencyotheAutomapUniversalwindow(seesection3.2

    orurtherinormationontheAutomapUniversalwindow).

    mustrstbeenabledorAutomapcontrolinthePlug-inManager.Onceenableditwillbewrapped,meaningthatanew

    versionotheplug-inwillbecreatedwhichiscontainedwithintheAutomapsotware.

    Thelet-handlistinthePlug-inManagerwindowshowsallplug-insinstalledonyoursystemandtheright-handlistshows

    allplug-insthathavebeenwrapped.Toselectaplug-intobewrappedorAutomapcontrolsimplydragitromthelet- hand

    listtotheright-handlist.Youcanctrl- click(PC)orcommand-click(Mac)toselectmultipleplug-insineitherlist.Onceyou

    havedraggedallplug-insthatyouwanttowrap,clickOKtoclosethePlug-inManagerwindow.Iyouwrapaplug-inwhilst

    yoursequencerisrunningthenyouwillneedtorestartyoursequencerbeorethewrappedversionwillbeavailabletouse.

    MAC PC

    WhenrunninginWindows,thePlug-inManagerprovidesoptionsoraddingandremovingVSTolders.Usetheseto

    makesurealloyourVSTplug-inoldersappearintheVSTplug-inolderslistsothatallplug-insarescannedbythe

    Plug-inManager.OnWindowscomputersonly,onceaVSTplug-inhasbeenwrapped,anew*.dlllewillbecreatedor

    thatplug-ininthesameolderastheoriginalplug-in*.dllle.Youcanmovethenew*.dllletoanylocationyoulikeon

    AnAutomap-wrappedplug-inwillappearinthelistoplug-insinyoursequencerwith(Automap)ateritsoriginalname.

    LoadtheAutomap-wrappedversionoaplug-inintoyoursequencertoallowAutomapcontroloverit.Theplug-inwilllookexactlythesameastheoriginalversionbutwithanadditionalAutomapborderatthebottomothewindow.

    TheAutomapborderallowsaccesstoAutomapunctionsasollows:

    Automap logo switc:Thisindicateswhichplug-incurrentlyhasAutomapocusi.e.whichplug-incancurrentlybe

    controlledromtheNocturn.Itwillberedortheplug-inthathasAutomapocusandwhiteorallotherplug-ins.Clickit

    WhenyouoperateacontrolontheNocturn,theclientnameandpresetnamewillchangetoshowthecontrolname

    andparametervalue.ThisallowsyoutoresizetheAutomapUniversalwindowtoshowjustthecontrolmapinoandstill

    beabletoseethenameandvalueotheparameteryouarecontrolling:

    Theencodersandcrossaderaretouch-sensitiveandneedonlybetouched,notmoved,todisplaythecontrolnameand

    parametervalueinthecontrolmapinosection.Thismeansyoucanpreviewthecontrolnameandparametervaluewithoutalteringtheparameter.

    Control Laout

    Thisshowsthecontrolsonthehardware,theirnamesandcurrentvalues.Torenameacontrol,simplyclickonthecontrol

    name,typeinanewoneandpressenter.Toclearacontroloitscurrentparameterassignment,clickonitandpress

    backspaceordelete.

    Thecrossadermayappearredinsteadowhite.Redindicatesthatthecurrentpositionothecrossaderdoesnotmatch
