1. InstallatIon
Readtheollowinginstruct ionsorPCorMactolearnhowtoinstallNocturnonyourcomputer.Aterinstallation,
rememberthatNocturnisnotaMIDIdevice,itisanAutomapdevice.MIDIistransmittedusingthevirtualMIDIportswithintheAutomapUniversal(Server)sotware.

TheNocturniscompatiblewithWindowsXPservicepack2,XPX64andVista(32-and64-biteditions).
InstallationplacestheNocturndriverandAutomapUniversal2.0sot wareonyourcomputer.
CloseallrunningprogramsanddisconnectallUSBdevicesromthecomputer,withtheexceptionokeyboardand
mouse.
LocatetheleNocturnSetup.exeontheNocturnresourcesdiscanddouble-clicktorunit.
TheinstallerwillpromptyoutoconnecttheNocturntoyourcomputer.ItheWindowsFoundNewHardwareWizard
appearsateryouconnecttheNocturn,clickcanceltocloseitandthencontinuewiththeinstallation.

ThisistheAutomapUniversalwindow.Youcanresize,maximizeandminimizetheAutomapUniversalWindowbutitwillnot
gotothebackgroundwhenyougiveanotherwindowocus.Whenopen,itwillremainvisibleinrontoallotherwindows.
However,youcansetittobesemi-transparentsothatyoucanseewhatisgoingonbehindit(seesection2.4).Pressthe
ViewbuttonontheNocturntoopenandclosetheAutomapUniversalwindow.
OncetheAutomapServerisrunning,youcanlaunchyourmusicsotware.Somesequencers,whenloading,will
automaticallylaunchtheAutomapServeriitisnotalreadyrunning.WhilsttheAutomapServerandyourmusicsotware
arerunning,theNocturncanbedisconnectedandreconnectedwithoutcausingproblems.However,theAutomapServer
mustnotbequitatanypointwhilstyourmusicsotwareisrunning.Doingsowillresultinthemusicsot warehavingtobe
restartedtore-establishitsconnectionwiththeAutomapServer.

2.3.1 clIents

2.3.2 control maPs
ControlMapisthetermusedorthearrangementoparametersacrosstheNocturnscontrols.Itispossibletoassign
theparametersowhateveryouarecontrollingtothephysicalcontrolsontheNocturninanyway.Forexample,iyouare
controllingasotwaresynthesizer,youmaywishtoassignltercuto toencoder1,lterresonancetoencoder2,lter
envelopedecaytoencoder3etc.Onceyouhaveassignedparametersinthewayyouwant,youcansavethearrangement
oparametersasacontrolmap,whichcanberecalledwhenyounextcontrolthatsotwareordevice,so
thattheNocturnscontrolsremainassignedtothoseparameters.
2.3.3 PaGes
Althoughthereareatotalo17assignablecontrolsontheNocturn(8encoders,8buttonsand1crossader),youare
notlimitedtoassigningonly17parameters.Acontrolmapcanhavemorethanonepageocontrols.Youcancreatea
newpageandassignallthecontrolstodierentparameters,thenswitchbetweenthenewandoriginalpagestoaccess
upto34parameters.Itispossibletocreateasmanypagesasyoulike,orremovethemiyouhavetoomany.Thepage+
andbutt onscanbeusedtonavigatethroughpageswithinacontrolmap.Itispossibletoassignmorethanonecontrol
ontheNocturntothesameparameter,meaningthesamephysicalcontrolcanbeassignedtothesameparameteron
dierentpagesoacontrolmap.Seesection3.3orinormationonaddingandremovingpages.
2.3.4 control maP GrouPs
Eachcontrolmapwillbelongtooneoourgroups,accordingtothetypeoclientitcontrols.TheourgroupsareUser,
FX,InstrumentandMixer.Acontrolmapwillbeautomaticallyassignedtoagroup,butyoucanchangethegroupthatit
belongstoromtheAutomapUniversalwindow.
Thegroupsystemallowsquickerselectionocontrolmaps.Iyouwanttocontrolacertaineectplug-inthenyouknowit
willbeintheFXgroupandyouwillonlyhavetolookthroughtheFXcontrolmapstondit,notallcontrolmaps.Wehave
giventhegroupsuseulnamesbut,sinceyoucanassignacontrolmaptoanygroupyoulike,thereisnothingtostopyou
romusingthemdierentlytothewaytheyarelabelled.Forexample,youmaywishtocontroltheplug-insononlyour
othetracksinyoursession,inwhichcaseyoucouldassignthecontrolmapssotheyareseparatedbetweentheour
groupsonatrack-by-trackbasisratherthanaccordingtothetypeoclient.

isnotactivethenyoumustmanuallyselectadierentplug-intocontrol,eitherbyclickingtheAutomaplogointhebottom

Encoder Acceleration:Thisoptionisusedtosettheencoderaccelerationi.e.therelationshipbetweenhowastyou

Onceyouhavenishedclearing,assigningandrenamingcontrolsyoucansavetheMIDIcontrolmaptoa*.automaple
usingtheSaveAsoption.WhenyouactivateaMIDIchannel,youcanloadinasavedcontrolmapusingtheOpen
option(theMIDIchannelisnotstoredwiththeMIDIcontrolmap).IyouusetheSetAsDeaultoptionthenthatMIDI
controlmapwillberecalledeverytimeyouactivateaMIDIchannelromtheAutomapsettingsmenu.
WhenyouquittheAutomapServer,theMIDIinputandoutputportsettings,thecurrentlyactiveMIDIchannelsandall
controlassignmentsintheirMIDIcontrolmapsareautomaticallystored.OnlaunchingtheAutomapServeragainall
AutomapMIDIClientsettingsandMIDIcontrolmapswillberestored.Thismeansthatiyouhaveapermanentmusic-makingsetup,youdonothavetoworryaboutre-activat ingMIDIchannelsorimportingMIDIcontrolmapseverytimeyou
sitdowntomakemusic.
5.6 sPeed dIal functIon In a mIdI control maP
Justaswhenyouarecontrollingaplug-inorsequencermixer,theSpeedDialcanbeusedtocontrolanyparameter
currentlydisplayedonyourscreenbyrestingthemousecursoroverthatparameterandthenrotatingtheSpeedDial
(withoutpushingitin).
Additionally,whenaMIDIcontrolmapisselected,theSpeedDialcanbepushedinandrotatedtosendMIDIprogram
changemessages.TheMIDIprogramchangevalueisshownbelowtheclientnameintheControlMapViewothe
AutomapUniversalwindow(wherepresetname/numberisshownorplug-ins).
5.7 mIdI feedBack
MIDIeedbacksupportisanotherbenetthatcomesromtheAutomapMIDIClientbeingabletoreceiveMIDIdata.Asan
example,iyouarecontrollingahardwaresynthandyouoperateanencoderontheNocturntoalterasynthparameter,
theLEDringaroundtheencoderwillrefectthecurrentparametervaluesincetheAutomapServerknowsthecurrent
valueotheparameter.
Iyoualteredthesameparameterromthesynthitsel,withoutMIDIeedbacktheAutomapServerwouldhavenowayo
knowingthecurrentvalueotheparameter,andtheLEDringaroundtheencoderwouldnotrefectthecurrentparameter
value.SettingtheAutomapMIDIClienttoreceiveMIDIdataromthesynth(byselectingthesynthorAllMIDIportsasthe
MIDIInput)ensuresMIDIdataromthesynthisedbacktotheAutomapServerthroughtheAutomapMIDIClientandthe
LEDringwillalwaysrefectthecurrentparametervalue,eveniyoualtertheparameterromthesynthitsel.
