2. NOKIA GSM CONNECTIVITY TERMINALS

The Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminal is a machine-to-machine (M2M) communications device that provides wireless connectivity and remote management possibilities for different applications. The Nokia 30 terminal offers GPRS, USSD, high-speed data, and other advanced services to be used in EGSM900/GSM1800 networks. The Nokia 31 terminal offers the same advanced services for use in GSM850/1900 networks.

Note: The Nokia 31 terminal supports data call bit rates from 2,400 to 14,400 bps.

Note: Some services described or mentioned in this document, such as GPRS, are network dependent. Please contact your network service provider for details.

Please see the cover page of this document and Figure 1 for an image of the Nokia 30 terminal or Nokia 31 terminal.

Figure 1 Nokia 30 terminal or Nokia 31 terminal with RS-232 data adapter.

A Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminal includes a GSM transceiver with built-in data capabilities, a SIM card reader, an internal antenna, an external antenna connector, and an M2M system connector.

There are three operation modes in which the Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminals can be used:

• User control mode

• AT command mode

6. FEATURE DESCRIPTIONS

The following describes the new features referenced in earlier chapters. For a full description of the functionality, see the corresponding issue of the referenced document.

6.1 USER CONTROL MODE ISSUE 2 For a detailed description of the functionality of User control mode Issue 2, please see Reference 8, Issue 2.

Configurator software should be used to configure the settings related to some of the following functionalities. The features listed in this chapter are supported by Configurator software, version 2.3 (see Chapter 4.2) or newer.

Feature Description Disabling acknowledgements

The Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminal acknowledges whether or not a text message has successfully commanded a device attached to it. The terminal sends a response as a text message back to the phone number that sent the control message. It is also possible to disable this feature to, for example, decrease the amount of communication with the device.

Aliasing The predefined commands can be replaced with user-specified commands (i.e., aliases). The defined alias replaces the initial command or previous alias configured for the same command. If an alias has been configured, the original command is no longer accepted.

Alarming continuously/once

As a default, an alarm message is sent once to the number where the alarm was subscribed. Alternatively, the alarm can be sent continuously. In this case, alarm messages are sent when alarm conditions are met, until the alarm subscription is cancelled.

Authorized numbers list

Authorized number selection enables access limitation to specific phone numbers in User user control mode. Only those control messages originating from an authorized number are allowed to control the terminal and the device attached to it. It is possible to define up to 16 authorized numbers.

Inverting outputs New command: Output_Invert X

Command is used to invert digital output states. The state of an output can be changed to another without knowing the state of it beforehand.

Copyright © Nokia 2003-2004. All rights reserved.

15/19

Output pulses New command: Output_Pulse X Y

Command is used to set digital output states to requested state for a specified time.

Cancelling output pulses

New command: Output_Pulse_Cancel X

The previously set timed command can be cancelled before the <time> parameter defined in the pulse control message has passed.

Cancelling input alarms

New command: Input_Change_Cancel X

The sending of alarm messages in the case when alarm conditions are met can be cancelled with this message. If an alarm is subscribed with Continuously option, the alarm message sending can be cancelled before alarm conditions are met.

User control mode Issue 1

6.2 USER CONTROL MODE ISSUE 1 Please see Reference 8, Issue 1.

6.3 AT COMMAND MODE Please see Reference 7 for details of AT commands supported by Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminals.

16/19

6.4 M2M SYSTEM MODE CORBA method calls that can be used to control the parameters mentioned in this chapter are listed in Reference 9.

Feature Description Network-supported real-time clock

Time values are automatically retrieved from the GSM network, where available, using Network Indication and Time Zone (NITZ) network service. Values are stored in the parameters listed below. If NITZ service is not available in a specific network, the parameters give an exception when read.

Parameters:

Time (read-only)

Members: Hours, Minutes, Seconds, Local time zone

Date (read-only)

Members: Year, Month, Day

Real-time clock parameter values can be read in M2M system mode using a CORBA method call (getParam).

Connection type selection for RS-232 port

There are two serial ports available on the M2M System Connector of the Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminal—the RS-232 port and the M2M System port. The protocol available on the RS-232 port can be modified with the Connection type selection.

Connection type selection enables the Nokia 30 or Nokia 31 to communicate in M2M System mode with the RS-232 adapter.

Parameter: RS232Mode

Values: AUTO, AT, GENERAL_PURPOSE, SYSTEM_PROTOCOL

Connection type can be set either with Configurator software or in M2M System mode using CORBA method calls (getParam, setParam) to get or set values for the above parameter.

Remote I/O Control in M2M System mode

I/O pins of M2M System Connector can be controlled either in User control mode or M2M System mode. In M2M System mode the input and output pins can be controlled with CORBA messages.

For Remote I/O Control related CORBA messages and parameters, please see Reference 9.

Settings for Remote I/O Control in M2M System mode can also be done with Configurator software.

Copyright © Nokia 2003-2004. All rights reserved.

17/19

6.5 OTHER CORBA method calls that can be used to control the parameters mentioned in this chapter are listed in Reference 9.

Feature Description Possibility to disable incoming SMS indications

When the indication for incoming short messages (SMS) is turned off, a LED indication when a new short message arrives is never shown. Other terminal status indications are shown with the LEDs normally.

Parameter: LedOperationMode

Values: NORMAL, ALL_LEDS_RESERVED, USE_NO_LEDS, SMS_LED_DISABLED

SMS message indications can be disabled either with Configurator software or in M2M System mode using CORBA method calls (getParam, setParam) to set values for above parameter.

Analog audio The M2M System Connector supports analog audio functionality that is an alternative to the Digital Audio Interface. Microphone and headphone signals can be connected through the analog audio signal interface.

See References 5 and 11 for audio levels and other details of hardware requirements.

Parameters: AudioParameters

Members: AudioMode, EchoMode

Analog audio settings can be done either with Configurator software or in M2M System mode using CORBA method calls (getParam, setParam) to get or set values for the above parameter.

An audio call can be established with AT commands (see Reference 7) or CORBA messages (see Reference 9).

7. FUTURE RELEASES

Nokia works on a principal of continuous improvement. Thus, new releases for Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminals may occur. These new releases will be backwards compatible with the previous ones. When the new software is released, this document will be updated.

New releases for Configurator software will also be made. When new software is released for the Configurator, this document will be updated. The most recent versions of Configurator software can be downloaded from the Forum Nokia Web page at http://www.forum.nokia.com/m2m and www.americas.forum.nokia.com.

Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminals such as the Nokia 30 terminal and Nokia 31 terminal are backwards compatible in other aspects as well. In terms of hardware, this applies to the M2M System Connector of the terminals. In terms of software interfaces, this applies to the M2M System mode of the terminals.
