● Wired equivalent privacy (WEP) with keys up to128 bits, Wi-Fi protected access (WPA), and802.1x authentication methods. These functionscan be used only if they are supported by thenetwork.

Important: Always enable one of theavailable encryption methods to increase thesecurity of your wireless LAN connection. Usingencryption reduces the risk of unauthorised accessto your data.

WLAN connectionsTo use a WLAN, you must create an internet accesspoint in a WLAN. Use the access point forapplications that need to connect to the internet. AWLAN connection is established when you create adata connection using a WLAN access point. Theactive WLAN connection is ended when you end thedata connection. You can also end the connectionmanually. You can use a WLAN during a voice call or whenpacket data connection is active. You can only beconnected to one WLAN access point device at atime, but several applications can use the sameinternet access point.

When the device is in the Offline profile, you can stilluse a WLAN, if available. Remember to comply withany applicable safety requirements whenestablishing and using a WLAN connection. If you move the device to another location withinthe WLAN and out of range of a WLAN access point, the roaming functionality can automaticallyconnect your device to another access point thatbelongs to the same WLAN. As long as you remainwithin range of access points that belong to thesame network, your device can stay connected tothe network.

Tip: To check the unique media access control(MAC) address that identifies your device, forexample to configure the MAC address of yourdevice to a WLAN router, enter *#62209526#in the home screen. The MAC address isdisplayed.

Positioning (GPS)You can use applications such as GPS data todetermine your location or measure distances. These applications require a GPS connection.

About GPSThe coordinates in the GPS are expressed using theinternational WGS-84 coordinate system. Theavailability of the coordinates may vary by region. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is operated bythe government of the United States, which is solelyresponsible for its accuracy and maintenance. Theaccuracy of location data can be affected byadjustments to GPS satellites made by the UnitedStates government and is subject to change withthe United States Department of Defense civil GPSpolicy and the Federal Radionavigation Plan.Accuracy can also be affected by poor satellitegeometry. Availability and quality of GPS signalsmay be affected by your location, buildings, naturalobstacles, and weather conditions. GPS signals maynot be available inside buildings or undergroundand may be impaired by materials such as concreteand metal.

GPS should not be used for precise locationmeasurement, and you should never rely solely onlocation data from the GPS receiver and cellularradio networks for positioning or navigation. The trip meter has limited accuracy, and roundingerrors may occur. Accuracy can also be affected byavailability and quality of GPS signals.Different positioning methods can be enabled ordisabled in positioning settings.

Assisted GPS (A-GPS)Your device also supports assisted GPS (A-GPS).A-GPS requires network support.Assisted GPS (A-GPS) is used to retrieve assistancedata over a packet data connection, which assists incalculating the coordinates of your current locationwhen your device is receiving signals fromsatellites. When you activate A-GPS, your device receivesuseful satellite information from an assistance dataserver over the cellular network. With the help of

41

Engl

ish

CyanCyan MagentaMagenta YellowYellow BlackBlackCyanCyan MagentaMagenta YellowYellow BlackBlack

assisted data, your device can obtain the GPSposition faster.Your device is preconfigured to use the Nokia A-GPSservice, if no service provider-specific A-GPS settingsare available. The assistance data is retrieved fromthe Nokia A-GPS service server only when needed. To disable the A-GPS service, select Menu >Applications > GPS data and Options >Positioning settings > Positioning methods >Assisted GPS > Options > Disable. You must have an internet access point defined inthe device to retrieve assistance data from theNokia A-GPS service over a packet data connection. The access point for A-GPS can be defined inpositioning settings. A wireless LAN (WLAN) accesspoint cannot be used for this service. Only a packetdata internet access point can be used. Your deviceasks you to select the internet access point whenGPS is used for the first time.

Hold your device correctlyThe GPS receiver is located in the bottom of thedevice. When using the receiver, make sure that youdo not cover the antenna with your hand.

Establishing aGPS connectionmay take from acouple ofseconds to tensof minutes.Establishing aGPS connectionin the car, in badweatherconditions, or ina challenging geographical environment may takelonger. The GPS receiver draws its power from the devicebattery. Using the GPS receiver may drain thebattery faster.

Tips on creating a GPSconnectionIf your device cannot find the satellite signal, consider the following:● If you are indoors, go outdoors to receive a better

signal.● If you are outdoors, move to a more open space.

42

Engl

ish

CyanCyan MagentaMagenta YellowYellow BlackBlackCyanCyan MagentaMagenta YellowYellow BlackBlack

● Ensure that your hand does not cover the GPSantenna of your device.

● If the weather conditions are bad, the signalstrength may be affected.

● Some vehicles have tinted (athermic) windows, which may block the satellite signals.

Check satellite signal statusTo check how many satellites your device has found, and whether your device is receiving satellitesignals, select Menu > Applications > GPS dataand Options > Satellite status. If your device has foundsatellites, a bar for eachsatellite is displayed in thesatellite information view. The longer the bar, thestronger the satellitesignal is. When your devicehas received enough data from the satellite signalto calculate the coordinates of your location, the barcolour changes.Initially, your device must receive signals from atleast four satellites to be able to calculate thecoordinates of your location. When the initialcalculation has been made, it may be possible tocontinue calculating the coordinates of your

location with three satellites. However, theaccuracy is generally better when more satellitesare found.

6.9 hours(WCDMA/GSM)

Up to 363 hours/363 hours(WCDMA/GSM)

Important: Battery talk and stand-by timesare estimates and only possible under optimalnetwork conditions. Actual battery talk and standbytimes depend on SIM cards, features used, batteryage and condition, temperatures to which batteryis exposed, network conditions, and many otherfactors, and may be significantly shorter than thosespecified above. Ringing tones, hands free callhandling, use in digital mode, and other featureswill also consume the battery, and the amount of

time a device is used for calls will affect its stand-bytime. Likewise, the amount of time that the deviceis turned on and in the standby mode will affect itstalk time.

BatteryBattery and charger informationYour device is powered by a rechargeable battery. The battery intended for use with this device isBL-5K. Nokia may make additional battery modelsavailable for this device. This device is intended foruse when supplied with power from the followingchargers: AC-10. The exact charger model numbermay vary depending on the type of plug. The plugvariant is identified by one of the following: E, EB,X, AR, U, A, C, K, or UB. For example, the modelnumbers for the charger can be, among others,AC-10 etc.The battery can be charged and dischargedhundreds of times, but it will eventually wear out. When the talk and standby times are noticeablyshorter than normal, replace the battery. Use onlyNokia approved batteries, and recharge yourbattery only with Nokia approved chargersdesignated for this device.

If a battery is being used for the first time or if thebattery has not been used for a prolonged period,it may be necessary to connect the charger, thendisconnect and reconnect it to begin charging thebattery. If the battery is completely discharged, itmay take several minutes before the chargingindicator appears on the display or before any callscan be made.Safe removal. Always switch the device off anddisconnect the charger before removing thebattery.Proper charging. Unplug the charger from theelectrical plug and the device when not in use. Donot leave a fully charged battery connected to acharger, since overcharging may shorten itslifetime. If left unused, a fully charged battery willlose its charge over time.Avoid extreme temperatures. Always try to keep thebattery between 15°C and 25°C (59°F and 77°F).Extreme temperatures reduce the capacity andlifetime of the battery. A device with a hot or coldbattery may not work temporarily. Batteryperformance is particularly limited in temperatureswell below freezing.Do not short-circuit. Accidental short-circuiting canoccur when a metallic object such as a coin, clip, orpen causes direct connection of the positive (+) and

negative (-) terminals of the battery. (These looklike metal strips on the battery.) This might happen, for example, when you carry a spare battery in yourpocket or purse. Short-circuiting the terminals maydamage the battery or the connecting object.Disposal. Do not dispose of batteries in a fire as theymay explode. Dispose of batteries according to localregulations. Please recycle when possible. Do notdispose as household waste.Leak. Do not dismantle, cut, open, crush, bend, puncture, or shred cells or batteries. In the event ofa battery leak, prevent battery liquid contact withthe skin or eyes. If this happens, flush the affectedareas immediately with water, or seek medicalhelp.Damage. Do not modify, remanufacture, attempt toinsert foreign objects into the battery, or immerseor expose it to water or other liquids. Batteries mayexplode if damaged.Correct use. Use the battery only for its intendedpurpose. Improper battery use may result in a fire, explosion, or other hazard. If the device or batteryis dropped, especially on a hard surface, and youbelieve the battery has been damaged, take it to aservice centre for inspection before continuing touse it. Never use any charger or battery that is

damaged. Keep your battery out of the reach ofsmall children.

Important: Talk and standby times areestimates only. Actual performance depends onmany factors such as network conditions, devicesettings selected, device features being used (orrunning in the background), battery condition andambient temperature. Making calls with the deviceaffects the standby time and the amount of time instandby mode affects the talk time.
