INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT

NOKIA N900 MOBILE COMPUTER

Mobile operating systems play an increasingly more important role when choosing a new

mobile phone. Besides the design and the speed, many of its functionalities strongly dependon the phone’s operating system.

Nokia always uses the Symbian OS for high-end mobile phones. Symbian enables installing

applications, and also managing your agenda and email account is easy and straightforward.

Besides Symbian, Nokia also uses a further developed Open Source operating system, the

Linux-based Maemo. The Nokia N900 is the first phone to make use of this operating

system, where it is called Maemo 5. This is a totally new experience for the user.




SUBJECT BACKGROUND

Nokia Internet Tablet series is the manufacturer Finland birth in 2005, this is the device to surf

big touch screen. Inherit predecessors, the N900 differ more compact size, model also features

phone, supports 3G/HSDPA connectivity and called the new smart phone platform than the

mobile market.

The Nokia N900 and Linux-based Maemo software platform attract a growing number of

developers and brands signing on to create innovative applications that enrich the device

experience. Fusing PC power, the internet, and the mobile phone together with an intuitive user

interface, Maemo and the Nokia N900 prove an attractive avenue for creative collaboration and

distribution. The applications allow users to customize and personalize the device further to meet

their needs.

Therefore , Nokia N900 brings the power of computer to mobile devices. It’s a high performance

mobile computer with advanced Maemo 5 software on Linux. Explore Nokia N900 features like

multitasking on a live Dashboard, wide screen video capture, 3,5“ WVGA touch display (800 x

480 pixels). The Nokia N900 also features 1 GB of application memory and up to 48GB of

storage. Maemo browser is powered by Mozilla Technology and includes Adobe Flash 9.4 and

full AJAX support. Wi-Fi and 3.5G connectivity provides fast access to Internet. Take high

quality photos and wide screen videos using 5Mpix camera with Carl Zeiss optics




CHARACTERISTIC/CRITERIA/CAPABILITIES

1.1 The Nokia N900 phones large display screen is excellent quality and is a 3.5 inch TFT

touch screen. True life colour representation is provided by the fact that the screen

accurately displays up to 16 million colours at a pixel size of 800 x 400. To compliment

the screen, an accelerometer sensor is provided, whilst the built in proximity sensor saves

on battery life. If the user wants to enter data, the full QWERTY keyboard can simply be

accessed from behind the screen and is simple to use and fully functional.

1.2 The Nokia N900 is a new PDA smart phone which is built with a work horse principle

behind its stylish design. This latest Nokia handset provides the ARM Cortex A8 600

MHz processor for its integral operations whilst supplying dedicated PowerVR SGX

graphics to compliment and enhance its graphics capabilities

1.3 The 256 MB RAM ensures smooth and hassle free environment for high end applications

like latest games and operating systems. The handset is capable of loading 32 GB data in

the storage space. Additional 16 GB gets included with a microSD memory card.

Photography skills of the user boost with the 5 mega-pixels camera inbuilt in the stunning

Nokia N900

1.4 The Nokia N900 features a 5.0 mega pixel camera with an operating resolution of 2592 x

1944 pixels. displays up to 16 million different colours.To help in taking effective

images, the N900 user is armed with autofocus and a dual LED flash as well as Carl Zeiss

optics. Geo tagging, which is able to reference images by location is also provided. For

those who prefer the moving image rather than static, video recording and playback at

WVGA quality video at 25 frames per second is available. Video at VGA quality is also

available by virtue of a secondary camera.

1.5 The measures 110.9 x 59.8 x 18 mm in length, breadth and depth. It weighs 181 grams

which is justified by the enormous number of amazing features present inside the mobile

phone.It comprehensive handset with many features. All of the functions offer something

different and the phone excels in many ways.




1.6 Ability to capture Wi-Fi networks comes handy during internet access, transferring data

and getting connected with other people. Local networks can be created and captured

using bluetooth or USB. These networks are helpful in playing multi-player games and

loading or unloading of the handset with information.

1.7 The handset provides entertainment to the users with games like Yes, Bounce, Chess,

Mahjong and other downloadable games. GPS and A-GPS support helps user find

locations in unknown areas. Speaker-phone, stereo FM radio with FM transmitter, push

email, photo editor, voice command/dial, document viewer and music player are other

useful and attractive features present in the mobile phone. The Nokia N900 is a

combination of stunning looks and extraordinary features that offers a wonderful mobile

experience to its users. Such a great potential has never been witnessed before in a mobile

phone.

change to a vertical orientation when the handset it turned and the slider is closed.

This is convenient for the phone, but nothing else works that way.




5.10 The slide lock has been moved to the right end of the phone next to the 3.5mm

headphone jack and microphone hole, and there is a micro USB jack on the left side.

5.11 Top of the device is the zoom rocker which now also doubles as the volume

controller

5.12 Nokia included an Infrared window, On the front of the glossy black face plate is

the display, an earphone hole, the front-facing camera, and light and proximity sensors.

On the back is the 5MP camera with a slider cover and an integrated prop stand.

5.13 The N900 operating system is the Maemo 5 system, which has been proven as a

reliable and effective operating system in previous models.

5.14 HSCSD, GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA 3G compatibility enables the option of

smooth and fast browsing on this mobile phone

5.15 the heart of Nokia N900 is a ARM Cortex A8 600 MHz microprocessor with

PowerVR SGX graphics. Embedded in the handset is a standard Li-Ion 1320 mAh

battery.

STRENGTHS/ADVANTAGES/CHALLENGES

5.16 .Patent - It have 3.5 inch touchscreen display , easy to see. It also have Slide out

QWERTY keyboard that can easy to type.

5.17 .Strong Brand name - NOKIA N900- Nokia is Finnish pioneer in mobile

telecommunications and the world’s leading maker of mobile devices.

reputation among the mass.

5.22 Nokia want to develop device with real computing power. This mobile use New

maemo 5 Os.

WEAKNESSES/DISADVANTAGES/PROBLEMS

5.23 Problems with the proportion between the dimensions of the keyboard and screen

that will cause difficulties in operation.

5.24 It’s fantastic for internet, but not a natural at making calls,

5.25 No direct way to get your dialing function. And because there are no hard keys,

you need to use the touch-screen to access it through the main menu or set a shortcut .

5.26 No touch keys appear below the screen. the only hard keys on the whole device

sit on the horizontal top of the device; they are volume/zoom keys, a dedicated




camera key and the power button. There’s also a lock key for switching the display

from standby.

RECOMMENDATIONS

The Nokia N900 is one of the most anticipated cell phone of 2009 and for good reason.

Using a Linux based operating system, the phone features a 5MP camera, true

multitasking, DVD quality video capture, and much more. Nokia N900 screen protector

that uses a hard though flexible plastic. Stay away from the film type screen protectors

(the ones that feel like those clingy holiday window decorations). These often get air

bubbles trapped under them and do not offer the same level of protection.




CONCLUSION

The Nokia N900 is currently the best smartphone that Nokia has ever produced and it a

smartphone even if the company brands it as an "Internet tablet with phone functions" .

As a voice device, the Nokia N900 does very well, and as a communication tool, it is

very good too. With Maemo, Nokia's smartphone future seems a lot brighter than it is

with Symbian OS, but despite the obvious potential, the number (and quality) of

applications is still uncertain right now.

The Web experience is the most complete: the vast majority of sites work perfectly. All

the functionalities are there, including Flash and Ajax support, but in some situations

(Flash heavy sites), performance is still too low to offer a true desktop experience.

The N900 faces stiff competition from the iPhone 3GS and the new Motorola Droid, just

to name the obvious ones. It might have a "features" advantage, which is great.
