April 2011

Easter occurs late in the spring season this year!! It falls

almost as late as is possible. We celebrate Easter on a variety of

dates depending on the year. Some historians say that the cus-

tom dates back to the days of the very earliest Christians. In those

first years, it was not kept every year on the same day. Because

Christ died and rose again during the Passover period, many ob-

served Easter on that particular festival, keeping the Passover as

their ancestors had done before them, but seeing it now illumi-

nated by a new and different Light. Others, especially the Gentiles

of the Western communities, kept it on the Sunday following Pass-

over, remembering that it was on the morning after the Sabbath

“the first day of the week” that Mary Magdalene saw her risen Lord

in the dawn lit garden and thought He was the gardener. This dif-

ference of custom continued for a long time, and eventually re-

sulted in serious controversies between the Churches of East and

West. In AD 325, the Council of Nicaea ruled that the festival

should be celebrated, not on the Passover, which might fall on any

day of the week, but on the Sunday following the first full moon

after (or on) the Vernal Equinox, that Equinox being deemed to

occur always on March 21. If there happened to be a full moon on

a Sunday, then Easter Day should be on the Sunday after. So, it

is that throughout Western Christendom still, the great religious

feast of spiritual hope is governed in its date by the Spring moon,

and can never be earlier than March 22 or later than April 25.

We often describe Easter as the „Paschal‟ season. This

comes from the Hebrew word pesach, meaning Passover.

May your Easter be glorious!!

From your Senior Warden March is almost over and we are busy. The vestry decided that every time we had five kids in church those that wanted to would empty their pockets or purse of coins for this great cause. We had seven kids in church so those that wanted to, emptied their purses and pockets of loose change and gave $15 to Paradise Point . The early service decided to have their own empty your pockets of loose change and came up with over $20. Way to go early service!

Our organist-pianist is working out great and she is so versatile. We had a glitch in our organ and after some hefty moving, she went to the piano and finished the service. It amazes me how I can count on people to go over and beyond their limits to help.

Russ Campbell did another fabulous job with the Shrove Pancake Supper and had a fabu-lous crew that worked to make it a success. Thank you to all who helped. It was great to recon-nect with so many friends and the meal was deli-cious.

Our St. Patrick’s dinner was yummy with many busy hands and a very good auction, which was entertaining and profitable. Fran and Lynne worked so hard to organize this fun event.

Ash Wednesday was well attended and a real reminder of what it is all about. Gretchen is having informative classes about the rosary after the services on Wednesday. All are welcomed.

The vestry decided to purchase some new lightweight tables and so Judy Woodie and Co. made that happen.

April looks busy for us with so many activi-ties. We would love to see you. Jan

NURSES' NOTES Helpful Hints for Healthy Teeth

The function of teeth is to chew food -- and to some ex-tent, help you talk and form words. Teeth are not to be used for pliers, coat hangers, ice crushers, potato chip bag openers, knot looseners, fork tine straighteners or string/thread cutters. There are implements and appliances made specifically for

these chores.

Whiteners: Good or Bad? The new whitening rage fol-lows a continuum of products. The strips and other over-the-counter whiteners do not damage teeth or burn gum tissue.. The trays (to hold the peroxide solution) you can buy may can contain an acidic, unbuffered solution, which could damage enamel. The dentist, who can control the solution and timing, provides the best tray-type lightening. The fastest and safest

whitening is the high-intensity light systems.

Don't over brush your teeth. Dentists recommend a brush firm enough to remove plaque but not tear up gums. Most dentists prefer a designation of ―Soft‖. Get a new brush every three months. If you use an electric brush, a rotary head type that you take from tooth to tooth rather than cruising across the teeth with it. Water picks can drive bacteria back up into the gums, and do not remove plaque. Pre-brush rinses, are no substitute for brushing. Toothpaste is an abrasive, with some therapeutic additions, namely fluoride, which strengthens enamel and can shore up little breaches in it before cavities develop. Brushing itself should be gentle, with the bristles at a 45-degree angle to the teeth. Swish gently with an oval motion rather than raking the brush side to side across the teeth. Den-tists for use prefer the easy-glide type of dental floss after brushing. Since the dentin between teeth is not fully mineral-

ized with hard enamel, don't saw away like mad.

Dental Destroyers: Lemon chewing is a definite no-no because of the effect of the acid on the enamel. Some prescrip-tion drugs can cause discoloration of teeth or may cause bleed-ing of the gums. Read all the precautionary material provided by your pharmacist and/or contact your dentist or physician if you have any questions or concerns. Smoking & bulimia can have negative impact on teeth. Good nutrition and overall well-

ness are important for healthy teeth.

What about Sugar? Sugar is not the problem. How long the

sugar stays on teeth is the problem. Given enough time, the bacteria

in your mouth feed on the sugar and excrete damaging acid that can

eat through enamel forming cavities. If you eat candy or drink any

sweet drinks, brush afterward or chew some gum! Amazingly, even

sugar gum is not a big no-no for teeth, the dentists say. It churns up

lots of saliva, which carries off the sugar in short order. Some sugar-

less gum, containing xylitol, is even a good decay-preventer. Regard-

ing sodas, the diet kind contains more phosphates than can be acidic

to enamel and may be a bigger threat to your choppers than regular

soda. Now, the good news - - - dark chocolate is not too bad for your

teeth. Brushing after chocolate is still recommended. Small price to

pay.

Your Parish Nurse

Sharron Hollingsworth, RN

This Day

God gave you this day to do just as you would, You can throw it away – or do some good.

You can make someone happy, or make someone sad.

What have you done with the day that you had?

God gave it to you to do just as you would, You could do what is wicked, or do what is good.

You can hand out a smile, or just give‟em a frown. You can lift someone up, or push someone down.

You can lighten some load, or some progress impede,

You can look for a rose, or just gather some weed.

What did you do with your beautiful day? God gave it to you, did you throw it away?
