A MessageFrom theAssociateDirector

Anna Treague

The Son’s ReflectionGreetings from Luther Park,

Many of you may remember me, but for those who do not, my name is AnnaTreague (maiden name Klevgard). I am the new associate director at Luther Park asof the end of January this year. I may be new to this position, but I am not new to camp.

My first experience with Luther Park began the summer of 1995 when I washired as a counselor for my first year on summer staff. After that amazing experienceI spent four more summers on staff working as a canoe guide, in health care, senior high leadership coordinator and whatever else I needed to do. I began full time at camp in the fall of 1999 as retreat coordinator, and moved up to program director in 2003.

Since then, I have taken some time off to explore other paths, but ultimately keepfinding my way back. My kids, Adin, Elizabeth and Eleonore are excited to spendmore time at camp again as this was their first “home!”

This summer’s theme involves looking at the church year. Since we begin withAdvent as a time for preparing and reflecting God’s love, I am reminded of a devotion I wrote many years ago for one of my “The Son’s Reflection” articles. …Years ago in one of my many science classes I read somewhere that moonlight, really isn’t the moon’s light. It is just a reflection; a reflection of the sun’s light. The moon can’t actually produce its own light at all, but by reflecting the light ofthe sun, we are able to see a very bright light in the dark.

This is just like our lives today as Christians. We can’t produce “light,” but if we follow Jesus and do His will, we too can reflect the Son’s light in the darknessfor others to see….

…By being part of this ministry, we are acting like the moon when we share thatlight with others. We not only act as the moon reflecting God’s Son’s light, but whenwe pass that light on to others, just think how much brighter the world can be.

When we in camping ministry touch the life of one child by sharing the Son’s lightwith them and get them excited to share and reflect that light, watch and see howbright our world can become. It may take time, but it is a beginning.

John 8:12 ~ “Then Jesus spoke to them again saying, ‘I am the light of theworld. He who follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’”

May God bless you all, and may you too be “The Son’s Reflection!”

The theme for this year’s summer camp is “Living in God’s Time” and isbased on Ecclesiastes 3:1: “For everything there is a season, and a time forevery matter under heaven.” Campers will learn about Jesus as they focus on adifferent season of the church year each day, all while being surrounded bythe wondrous beauty of nature and the outdoors. This can have a profoundeffect on campers’ lives, their beliefs about God, and their futures.

After six years on the Luther Park Board, two as President, my termhas come to an end. There are so many wonderful people who give of theirtime and talents to support Luther Park. Being on the board has been a re!warding experience for me.

Exciting things are happening at Luther Park! This summer there aretwo new camping opportunities for campers. One is Music Camp and the otheris a Night Owl Camp. These should be fun! This summer, a Prayer Labyrinth Garden will be built by Nativity LutheranChurch and Roger King. As you might recall, Roger built the beautiful gazebo at the camp last summer. We are so thankful that Roger shares his talents withLuther Park! The new ropes course has been a great addition to camp. Thank you toHouse of Prayer, which reconstructed the course through a Cross!GenerationalMission trip last summer. What a wonderful opportunity for people of all agesto work together in service! The Retreat Center is closer to becoming a reality! Hopefully, the campcan break ground on this in the next couple of years. The Retreat Center willopen up accessibility to Luther Park for all.Renovations have been completed on three cabins, and the other cabins

are to be completed in the next year or so, including all new roofs. Thank you to all who are providing financial support for this, as well as theirtime and talents.Remember to lift up Luther Park to your congregations. There are

many opportunities at camp including retreats, family camp, summercamp, and mission trips. Encourage your youth to try Luther Park out. Oncethey go they are hooked!

Please support the upcoming Bikeathons. These raise scholarshipmoney for campers. No one is ever turned away from Luther Park for financial reasons. The first Bikeathon is June 7!8 and the second one is July18!19. You can send your donations to Luther Park and designate them for the Bikeathon. Or you can bike if you want.

Many thanks to the dedicated board members, staff, and countless vol-unteers who keep the ministry of Luther Park alive and moving forward!God Bless,Janet NelsonPresident

Janet Nelson

Just like this squirrel, we praise the Lord for your prayers, gifts, and volunteer-teerism in 2013. Thank you for your support of Luther Park!

Volunteers have been a major force this year. Men andwomen from Diamond Lake, Mount Calvary, and Elim have renovated cabins and reroofed the Log House.Tom Nelson of Elim designed and built a beautiful new entrysign for the camp. Roger King of Nativity built an amazinggazebo from materials he and his wife Kathleen donated.House of Prayer youth and adults reconstructed the ropescourse on their Summer Mission Trip.

The construction of a family and adult retreat center iscloser to becoming a reality. We have over $500,000 com-mitted and a large portion of this is earning interest in

the ELCA’s Mission Investment Fund. We can begin construction at $750,00.Luther Park will be able to serve many more people, including senior adults, withthis additional facility.

Families will enjoy private rooms and private bathrooms. With more people visiting the camp, more adults will see what needs to be done around the camp and takemore ownership in maintaining our facilities.

Significant donations this year included a $56,000 estate gift from LorraineOlson, long-time member of Zion Lutheran, Minneapolis. Another $15,000 was gifted to pay for interior improvements and the new roof on the Log House. Our annual Quilt Auction, Glad Tidings silent auction and dinner, Ole & Lena event, andBike-a-thons brought in over $35,000. One person shared $29,000 to use where neededmost! Each and every single gift we receive is critical to the ministry here. We are sograteful for all of our donors.

We’re in the process of recruiting summer staff including assistant program directors, counselors and kitchen staff. We always need lifeguards and health carepersonnel. Please let us know if you are aware of an 18-22 year-old who has gifts for working with kids. Working at camp looks great on a resume plus provides valu-able work experience. Work begins in June and concludes in mid-August with mostweekends free. What other job allows you to take your whole paycheck home sinceroom and board are covered?

Our year-round staff members are here to serve you all year long. Anna Treague is our associate director and handles registration for summer camp, managesthe office, trains and supervises summer staff and on-site year-round staff. We are currently in a search for retreat host/summer program director. Sharon Miller writes, edits and produces our bi-annual newsletter, and Eric and Marlene Zaraza are ourresident volunteers, taking care of maintenance/grounds-keeping and filling in as needed. Retreaters and summer campers alike will enjoy fabulous food from our great cooks Arlene Miller and Rhonda Demars.

God bless you in 2014!

A Great Note of Appreciation!“...another word of appreciation and admiration for continuing to gift Messiah’s campers

with an exceptional camp experience. It is so great to pick them up at the end of their campweek—the stories and experiences fill the van with smiles and laughter—and sometimes some spiritual in-sights, too. We live off those camp experiences for a long time, and they make us lookforward to the next opportunity to be at camp.

So God Bless you these days as you prepare for Summer 2014, the 55th year of ministry atLuther Park. WOW!

We will be praying for Luther Park’s ministry, staff, and all the campers and retreaters.. I’ve been encouraged lately by I John 3:1 - The first sentence of the verse. Maybe it will speak to you, too. ‘See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of Godand that is what we are.’ ,, Together, and in Christ, Tom Gustafson, Messiah Lutheran Church
