In 2012, we were once again chosen as the best place to bring the family by Buffalo Spree. So I thought it would be appro-priate to use the theme of family for this year’s Annual Report.

We had a very good year at the Zoo. Our total attendance reached 455,283 visitors, representing an 11% increase over the previous year. The unusually warm weather last winter benefitted the Zoo’s bottom line. Earned income exceeded budget in sev-eral areas; however, sponsorships and annual fund did not make budget, so we ended the year with just a modest surplus of $3,427. We utilized much of last year’s funding from the Zoo Foundation to make critical repairs including new parts for our historic carousel, replacing the sliding glass doors to Beastro and patching roofs in our hyena holding and zebra barn.

The biggest project of all was starting construction on the new Entry Plaza in the site of our former Children’s Zoo. The ground-breaking ceremony on September 20th was attended by a number of local politicians as well as some of the lead donors to the project. In 2012, we also completed design development for the Arctic Edge exhibit. The cost estimate indicated that the project remained on budget, so we began work on the Construction Documents.

The new Entrance and Arctic Edge exhibit come with an $18 mil-lion price tag and much of our time was spent on the capital campaign. Zoo leadership met one-on-one with every member of the WNY State delegation to request support for the Bear Necessities campaign. We also submitted a second Consolidated Funding Application to New York State and received a grant of $376,000 from Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. The WNY Regional Economic Development Council had recom-mended that the Zoo receive $1,000,000 for Arctic Edge, but the region did not receive sufficient funds through Empire State Development to support that request. On a positive note, Mayor Brown committed $550,000 in the City’s 2013 Capital Budget to Arctic Edge bringing the city’s support to over $1 million. At the end of 2012, total commitments to the capital campaign reached $12.7 million.

The capital campaign wasn’t the only focus of our FAMILY FUNDRAISING. Catillion 2012 - Born to Be Wild - was a great suc-cess with another sellout of tables, netting $125,000 for the Foundation. Congratulations to Steve and Nicole Swift and the entire catillion committee. The Swifts also hosted the first ever gift-gathering party for the silent auction. Thank you to the Swifts and to all of you who supported last year’s event.

We also relied on our FAMILY FRIENDS for support, including the Women’s Board, ProZoo Board and our Corporate Sponsors.

The ProZoo Board held two highly successful fundraisers to ben-efit the Zoo. Polar Bites, on February 16th, featured 57 vendors and attracted more than 1,200 people. The event brought in over $60,000 in income. Wines in the Wild on July 25th wel-comed more than 2,600 people to the zoo and netted over $106,000. Thank you to the Women’s Board for the great Basket Raffle and Silent Auction. And thank you to the development,

marketing, grounds and maintenance staffs for their terrific over-sight, coordination and execution of the event.

Our loyal sponsors provided nearly $160,000 in income to the Zoo in 2012. Coca-Cola and Sahlen’s hotdogs continued their longterm association with the Buffalo Zoo. NOCO continued its support of Sea Lion Cove while Buffalo Exterminating renewed its commitment to Otter Creek. Time Warner renewed their commit-ment to the Distance Learning Program. Try-It Distributing signed on to sponsor the Hyena exhibit. Fisher-Price increased their annual commitment to the Zoo by adding Grandparents Day to their sponsorship of the playground and Show Spot. Bimbo Bakeries joined Tops Markets and Goya Foods as sponsors of “Labor Day at the Zoo.” Goya Foods also sponsored the Bear exhibit and Hispanic Heritage Day. Univera renewed their Zoo sponsorship, sponsoring the Gorilla troupe while Perry's Ice Cream renewed their sponsorship of the Tiger exhibit. First Niagara con-tinued their support of Ferocious Fridays. Bank of America, 2 Find Your Home and Volkswagen of Orchard Park were presenting sponsors for Wines in the Wild. United Healthcare supported “Wild about Wellness” Day and New York Life sponsored Breakfast with Santa.

Last year, the Buffalo Zoo was the place to be for FAMILY FUN. Our monthly “Zooper Saturdays” featured a variety of free animal themed activities and keeper talks on the first Saturday of the month. Featured species in 2012 included our reptiles, big cats, gorillas, bears, elephants, rainforest animals, sea lions, river otters, snow leopards, and reindeer.

The summer season ended with a highly successful Labor Day at the Zoo. Twelve thousand visitors took advantage of the $1 entry price and many expressed their gratitude for the reduced admis-sion day as they exited the Zoo.

Two new special events for 2012 met with great success in their respective debuts. Hispanic Heritage Day, held on September 15th, featured music and food from an array of cultural groups. Goya Foods partnered with the Zoo on this event along with the

Hispanic Heritage Council. The Zoo offered a discount of $1 with any donation to the Food Bank of Western New York, bring-ing a significant amount of food and cash donations to this worthy cause.

On September 16th, the Navy came to the Zoo as part of Fleet Week in Buffalo. The Navy Bomb Disposal Unit set up a display adjacent to the Elephant yard, complete with two bomb dis-posal robots. Our Sea Lion staff did a great job in preparing a special navy-themed Sea Lion show. The highlight of the day was the Navy Leap Frog Parachute Team that jumped from a circling C130 airplane and landed in the Zoo’s parking lot.

A “Bon Voyage, Nanuq” weekend was held on October 13th and 14th to mark the departure of our male polar bear from the Buffalo Zoo and his resettlement in the Columbus Zoo. HSBC’s “Boo at the Zoo” and our annual Halloween Hayrides complet-ed the Fall season, while December’s Member’s Holiday Party and Breakfasts with Santa closed out the year.

The Education Department’s high quality FAMILY PROGRAMMING brought in a record number of participants. Summer Nature Camp had the highest attendance in recent history with 564 campers over the course of seven weeks. We also worked closely with WNY United Against Drug and Alcohol Abuse to provide them with 5 weeks of summer programming for 6th grade students based on our Animal Enrichment distance learning program and Animal Behavior unit from our Mentoring Young Scientists program. The Education Department collabo-rated with the education staff at the Darwin Martin House to produce a portion of the Darwin Martin House summer camp focused on the art and science of exhibit design.

Over 35,000 school children visited the Zoo in 2012. Many of those students enjoyed a free docent tour or participated in a formal classroom program. Last year, the Education Department’s growing homeschool following was expanded to include offerings for ages 9-12 and 13-17 along with the previ-ous monthly programming for children ages 5-8.

The Education Department was also involved with several major events in 2012. On January 19th and 20th, the Zoo hosted and co-taught a national FrogWatch USA training for zoos and other wildlife organizations interested in starting a FrogWatch USA chapter in their area. FrogWatch USA is a citizen science pro-gram that allows individuals and families to learn about the wetlands in their communities and help conserve amphibians by reporting the calls of local frogs and toads. There were a total of 20 participants representing the Buffalo Zoo, Seneca Park Zoo, Rosamond Gifford Zoo, Cornell University, Bronx Zoo, Roger Tory Peterson Institute, and the Buffalo Audubon Society.

On February 10th and 11th, The Buffalo Zoo co-hosted a two-day symposium on the Future of Zoos with Canisius College. Zoo experts from around the country were in attendance and the event received considerable media attention.

On October 25th, the Buffalo Zoo, Rosamond Gifford Zoo, and Seneca Park Zoo jointly hosted a workshop on “Why Zoos and

Aquariums Matter (WZAM)” with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). The workshop focused on two national studies about what people think of zoos and aquariums, their motiva-tions for visiting these institutions, and their conservation values and behavior.

The Buffalo Zoo would not exist were it not for our outstanding animal collection. Managing this collection requires a certain amount of FAMILY PLANNING. In 2012, we had a total of 81 births and hatchings at the Zoo including: bumblebee dart frog, Indochinese box turtle, Annam leaf turtle, scarlet ibis, roseate spoonbill, cattle egret, blue peafowl, red-breasted goose, yel-low-crowned night heron, boat-billed heron, rainbow lorikeet, cinereous vulture, rock hyrax, tammar wallaby, 6-banded arma-dillo, slender-tailed meerkat, spotted hyena, polar bear, pre-hensile-tailed porcupine, agouti, vampire bat, reindeer, big-horned sheep, and golden lion tamarin.

In addition to the births, we acquired several new males for recommended pairings with our females including giraffe, roan antelope, Indian rhino, and Sulawesi macaque. Female oce-lot, Massasagua rattlesnake, and pancake tortoises were received to breed with our males. Last year, we also added some new species for exhibition in the Reptile House, including Nicobar pigeon, shama thrush, Jamaican boa, Oustalet’s cha-meleon and Solomon Island leaf frogs.

With all these births and acquisitions, it is surprising to learn that the total number of specimens actually declined in 2012. This is because 120 of our juvenile Eastern Hellbenders were released back into the wild as part of the Zoo’s headstart pro-gram with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. These individuals, originally collected as eggs in the Allegheny watershed, spent two years at the Buffalo Zoo growing large enough to survive in their natural habitat. This long-term partnership with the DEC is just one example of the Zoo’s commitment to local conservation.

So our Zoo family was quite busy last year providing for the rec-reation and education of our visitors and the captive breeding and conservation of our animals. I want to thank all of the full-time, part-time and seasonal staff at the Zoo for their remark-able support and contribution to our mission. I also want to thank the Buffalo Zoological Society’s Board of Directors, the Women’s Board, ProZoo Board and Docents for their time and talents, and the treasure they bring to the Zoo.

New Entrance and Arctic Edge ExhibitThe Buffalo Zoo held a groundbreaking ceremony on September 20, 2012, signifying the start of construction on a brand new entry complex. Reusing and renovating an existing structure, the new entrance will feature new ticketing windows, a brand new gift shop and café, and a suite of rest-rooms. A Great Lakes water feature will be the centerpiece of the new entry plaza.

Building the new entrance is the Zoo’s first step towards building the new polar bear exhibit, which will be called Arctic Edge. The footprint for the state-of-the-art exhibit will cover some of the area currently occupied by the Zoo’s entrance on Parkside Ave.

Fundraising efforts continue to move forward in support of the new polar bear habitat, and con-struction of Arctic Edge is scheduled to begin late in 2013.

Addax, Addax nasomaculatus and gemsbok, Oryx gazella are two African bovids that are ideal subjects for observational research. While closely related (both in the subfamily hippotraginae), they have some noticeable behavioral differences. The purpose of this research project is to investigate behavioral similarities and differences of addax and gemsbok during the breeding and calving season.

The Zoological Society of Buffalo recognizes that important contributions are made to the Zoo and to the profession through research efforts. The Society also recognizes that research benefits society at large by contributing to our collective knowledge of nature. Listed below are a selection of some of the research projects conducted in 2012 (or continued from 2011). These projects were conducted as a result of

Penny Felski, Herp Manager, served as a team leader in the field study survey of Massasaugua rattlesnakes in their natural habitat. The yearly study aids in the conserva-tion of wild populations. Surveyors collect data on survey methods, search efforts, basic site information, and weather information. 2012 was the fourth year in the ongoing mark/recapture effort in Michigan. Every snake is processed for general health assessment, and samples are collected for future research needs. Environmental, spatial, and habitat assessment data are also collected for each capture or sighting. Penny also serves on the Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake’s SSP Research Committee.

Western Lowland GorillaDominique BertrandAnthropology Department, SUNY at Buffalo

Stress causes a myriad of behaviors in captive gorillas (Gorilla gorilla), and the negative effects of some of these behaviors make it crucial that caretakers recognize the causes of stress in order to circumvent them as much as possible. The present research will explore possible stressful effects that unknown visitors have on captive gorillas by measuring stress indicative gorilla behaviors and their use of enclosure space. Specifically we ask “what effects, if any, do visitor density, noise level, position, attention getting behaviors, and age composition have on gorilla use of space, self-directed behaviors, aggression, activity levels, social behaviors and regurgitation?”

Sue Margulis, Ph.DMatthew LeFauve Canisius College, Buffalo, NY

The effects of human presence on gorilla behavior will be measured. By evaluating gorilla behavior during varying crowd levels from zero to high, it may be possible to understand the influences of visitors on gorilla behavior. By incorporating remote, video-based obser-vations when even an observer is not present, the study will be able to determine if the observer also may alter behavior.

Our education department remained busy as ever in 2012 with existing programming, as well as a number of new projects. In addition to those mentioned in the Letter From the President, a few of the highlights includ-ed:

The Buffalo Zoo, in partnership with the Buffalo & Erie County Historical Society, was awarded $5,500 in fund-ing to develop and test a new school program for students from ten classes in grades 3-5 entitled, Erie Canalway Connections. The program focuses on the

interconnectedness of humans and our local environ-ment to the Erie Canal in the past and in the present. The program was extremely well received by teachers and students.

On February 6th, we became a part of the Leadership Team for a new initiative called Art Partners for Learning (APL). It is a grant-funded initiative to create a united arts education community to expand services and access in the eight counties in Western New York. The leadership team spent the year putting together the

Education

framework for the partners. They also worked on establishing pro-fessional development opportu-nities for cultural organizations and teachers, as well as putting out a request for proposals to cultural organizations interested in submitting educational pro-gramming for inclusion in APL's list of qualified programs for schools.

The Education Department expanded its reach into the growing homeschool communi-ty. In 2011, we established pro-gramming for students ages 5-8. This year, offerings were expand-ed to reach students through the age of approximately 12-13.

Page 9: Non-Profit Org US Postage PAID Permit No. 9 Buffalo, NY · about Wellness” Day and New York Life sponsored Breakfast with Santa. Last year, the Buffalo Zoo was the place to be for

The Buffalo Zoo had a wonderful year of programming. There were a number of successful fundraising and marketing efforts as well as a full year of fun events for the community to enjoy. Some of the high-lights included:

Fundraising campaigns

The Zoo’s Adopt an Animal program was very successful in 2012. The ongoing annual adoption sales did well, and were boosted by a Valentine’s Day promotion, the popular Christmas package, and a new Spooky Halloween adoption promotion that was an instant success.

Other successful fundraising efforts included TOPS Shop for the Animals, the Buy the Animals Lunch pro-gram, and the Women’s Board calendar sale and holiday luncheon.

Marketing and Sponsorships

The Zoo is very grateful for all of the generous sponsors who supported us in 2012. Our major sponsors included 2 Find Your Home, Bank of America, Coca-Cola, Fisher-Price, First Niagara, Goya Foods, NOCO, Perry’s Ice Cream, Sahlen’s hotdogs, Time Water Cable, Tops Friendly Markets, United Healthcare, Volkswagen of Orchard Park, and Wegman’s.

Special Events

In 2012, the Zoo held a number of special events throughout the year, including two old favorites, Wines in the Wild and Polar Bites, hosted by the ProZoo Board. Together, these two events raised over $160,000 for the Zoo.

The theme for this year’s Catillion, our annual black tie gala, was “Born to be Wild.” The sold out event was a smashing success, raising $125,000 for the Zoological Society of Buffalo Foundation.

The new “Zooper Saturdays” series featured a different species or animal group every month, and invited visitors to take part in a variety of animal activities. The events took place on the first Saturday of every month and were free with regular Zoo admission. The series has become very popular among Zoo patrons.

Other special events that took place during 2012 included Jungle Love, Breakfast with the Easter Bunny, Labor Day, Howl-O-Ween Hayrides, Breakfast with Santa, Members Appreciation Nights, and two new events, Navy Day and Hispanic Heritage Day.

The Bear Necessities CampaignThe Buffalo Zoo is in the midst of updating the entire facility to make sure that we provide the very best living conditions for our animals and the best amenities for our visitors. The Bear Ne-cessities Campaign will focus on two areas for improvement. First, a new Entry Plaza was con-structed directly off the parking lot. In addition to the new entrance, an enlarged gift shop, additional rest room facilities and a new café will be added. The primary goal of the cam-paign is to build a new state-of-the-art Polar Bear habitat which will meet all current industry standards. Arctic Edge will be home to this iconic species as well as other arctic animals new to Buffalo. Listed below are those who have made commitments of at least $1,000 in support of this initiative at the close of 2012.
