Many applications demand a materialographic preparationand examination without damaging the subject o inspec-
tion. This is where non-destructive testing, NDT, is em-ployed.
The usual NDT preparation steps such as grinding, polish-ing and etching are perormed on the part to be examinedin a limited area where no damage can be done, or subse-quent analysis o the surace.
Non-destructive preparation enables the necessary inspec-tion to be carried out on site, and is particularly suitableor quality checks in power stations, oil platorms, bridges,
aircrat etc.
Electrolytic preparation is a particularly ast and ecientmethod o non-destructive metallographic preparation. Itcan be applied directly to critical suraces and is widelyused or metal saety inspection, especially or critical partso larger units, e.g. welds and other joints. The method e-ectively reveals changes in the microstructure o the metaland so prevents possible damage because o cracks andleaks.

Struers manuactures a complete range o consumablesand portable equipment or materialographic non-destruc-

TransPol-5 is a portable, metallographic grinding/ polishingmachine built to withstand rugged eld conditions.
Access to inspection sites is oten restricted. The verycompact 32 mm grinding and polishing discs o the Struers
grinding/polishing machine, means that e.g. welds in eventhe most inaccessible places can be dealt with.

PSM-5 provides up to 400x magnication, and PSM-10 upto 600x.
Both are ideal or examination o prepared suraces pro-vided by TransPol-5 and Movipol-5.

Transcopy Replca FolTranscopy Replica Foil is used to make a
replica o any polished and etched surace.The oil is particularly useul when micro-graphs o an on-site prepared structure isrequired, or analysis using a portable mi-croscope is insucient.
Transcopy Replica Foil creates a permanentreplication o microstructures, cracks anddeects or uture analysis and comparisonin the laboratory.
FunctonTranscopy Replica Foil consists o refect-ing plastic lm with a sel-adhesive back. Areplica is made by applying Transcopy fuidto the lm and pressing it rmly onto theprepared and etched surace. A slightly over-etched structure results in a higher contrasto the replica. Ater 4-5 minutes the oil isremoved rom the surace. By removing thecover paper, the replica can be adhered toa plain plate and then examined under an
optical microscope.
3D replcaton compoundThe RepliSet system is designed to produce
an exact 3D copy o a surace. It is usedor NDT and eld applications allowing thestructure or irregularities on critical compo-nents to be examined and measured underlaboratory conditions.
RepliSet is a specially ormulated,ast curing two-part silicone rubber
with a good releasing ability or fex-ible high-resolution 3D replicas, which
behave like a metallic surace when exam-
ined in an optical microscope.RepliSet compounds are supplied in car-tridges and are dispensed using a hand-operated dispensing gun. The applicationsystem oers superior and ast results,regardless o the conditions.
ReplFx can be used separately or mould-ing o surace shapes or low tech applica-tions, or as support or a Repliset replica.A backing slide bonds to the RepliSet or
RepliFix replica, and serves to maintain theoriginal prole and a fat back to the replica.
A replica can be taken rom all metallicmaterials and most other solid materialslike ceramics, plastics and glass. There areno size, shape or thickness limitations onthe replicas that can be made and it is evenpossible to take replicas rom otherviseinaccessible suraces. The RepliSet systemcan produce replicas, which at the same
time are dimensionally correct, with ultrane detail reproduction and with a fat back.
Further to examination by optical micro-scopes, 3D examination can be carried outusing non-contact measuring instrumentssuch as laser measuring equipment ormeasuring projectors with 2D or 3D acili-ties. A replica o a cavity, or instance innerholes, can be examined using measurementand prole projectors. The replicas are suit-
able or 3D examination by SEM.
For eld use o the 50 ml RepliSet system,an aluminium transport case is optionallyavailable.
