WHY PARTNER?

PARTNERSHIPS AROUND YOUR CAUSE

Why Partner?

classy.org

What is a Partnership?

BREAK IT DOWN:

• Partnerships do not have to be contractual relationships between two people or organizations

• Being a partner in the nonprofit space, can simply mean opening your doors to others

• There are ways nonprofits can help one another make strides towards collectively achieving social change

The Many Facets of a Partner

THERE ARE:

• Partners you lean on for advice

• Partners who share the same end goal

• Partners unrelated to your cause

• Partners can help grow your network and resources

END GOAL ADVICE

CAUSE RESOURCES

Assess Partner Value

THINK ABOUT:

• How can you work together in a way that makes sense for both organizations?

• What unique value do you bring to the relationship?

• What is the goal of collaboration?

classy.org

A FEW REASONS:

• Limited formal education available on how to start and run a nonprofit

• Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses

• Relationships with other organizations can keep you from learning things the hard way

• On the ground training — many people in the nonprofit sector have earned their skill with hands on training

Knowledge & Resource Sharing

“Collaboration with another nonprofit will help save your organization more than a

donor ever will.”

classy.org

FOOD FOR THOUGHT:

• If your best friend had breast cancer, wouldn’t you want as many resources as possible fighting for her vs. fighting against each other for donations?

• Not everyone is going to be passionate about one particular issue so it’s important that the public is educated about all the donor opportunities that exist

BUT don’t nonprofits compete for dollars?

“I want all the nonprofits in my space to be as big or bigger than Barbells for

Boobs. The bigger they are and the better they are, the stronger our

community is.”

Partnerships Across Your Cause

classy.org

• There is a full circle tied to every cause

• Constantly working towards the end goal, but then you start over

• For example: With breast cancer after you survive, you start over and go back to prevention

ASK THESE QUESTIONS:

• What is the problem?

• Where do I live in the space of solving that problem?

• Who in that field can you work with to solve the bigger problem?

• If we solve the problem — How do we keep marching on and working for what we are passionate about?

A Narrow Focus Helps Solve Bigger Problems

“If we solve the problem, what’s next?”

classy.org

“The more nonprofits can find their focus, the more opportunity there is to work with others in their area of expertise.”

Partnerships Across the Nonprofit Community

classy.org

“I want to create social change period. We have a very specific focus, but our legacy can branch into any other organization by being accessible and helping others become more

efficient.”

Beyond the Cause…Expanding Your Partners

• Partnerships are not limited to your specific cause category

• An other organization’s work can inspire creativity with your own cause

classy.org

A FEW EXAMPLES:

• Susan G. Komen of Orange County helped Barbells for Boobs write a grant program

• Contacted charity:Water asking, “How do you do what you do?” Then flew out to NY and met with their team to learn how they built out their 100% model

• Met and worked with great leaders in the CrossFit Community

How did Barbells for Boobs start thinking about partnerships?

classy.org

“Barbells for Boobs can be bigger, but we’ve done things to focus on who we are vs. fundraise,

fundraise, fundraise. We are a trusted resource and will spend less time fundraising for more quality

time with people.”

Partnerships in Action

classy.org

“Find your organization’s biggest weakness and start doing research on who does it

best. After you do your homework, reach out to them and ask for their advice.”

classy.org

• Hosted by Reebok and the CrossFit Foundation

• Invited 17 charities from the CrossFit space

• Hosted a meet and greet to get to know one another and discuss basic needs

• Face-to-face interaction has lead to collaboration online

Charity Tank = Network of AWESOME

“We can talk about creating social change and how we are doing that together.”

• Mission: To inspire, empower, and financially support individuals in the CrossFit community who have been diagnosed with cancer and are currently undergoing treatment.

• Partnership: When Barbells for Boobs meets people in the CrossFit community with cancer, they send them to Everyday Warrior because they can receive financial assistance here.

classy.org

• Mission: To assist our nation’s veterans and the families of fallen heroes.

• Partnership: Attended the Charity Think Tank with Barbells, even though they have yet to engage with the CrossFit community. Barbells for Boobs helped with their annual golf tournament, having breast cancer survivors sell over $15K in golf balls to benefit Travis Manion.

• Value: Great opportunity for breast cancer survivors to help veterans, which was something they’ve never done. It was also a way to say thank you and we support you to the military.

• Future Opportunities: Barbells for Boobs is now associated with the Travis Manion brand. This recognition can help Barbells for Boobs work with and engage with CrossFit Communities on military bases in the future.

• Mission: To provide and inspire hope to those affected by breast cancer through early detection, education, and support services.

• Partnership: Barbells for Boobs is an extension of their national mammography program and works with two of their grantee partners to help fund biopsy services in Texas and Washington.

• Value: 100% of the BFB funds is put to work, which is a special collaboration because both BFB & NBCF were willing to put the mission first.

• Future Opportunities: To grow the opportunity where we see it fit to add in the biopsy service need in other NBCF partner hospitals.
